July 29, 31 and August 2 8 p.m.The collaboration continues for a third straight year between the Jeunesses Musicales Canada and the Festival d’opéra de Québec! Six up-and-coming young artists present Le nozze di Figaro, one of Mozart’s most beloved operas.
This bemusing story with biting humour is full of twists and turns. Figaro, valet to the Count Almaviva, is set to marry Susanna, the Countess’s maid. But their wedding day is interrupted by misunderstandings and mischief aimed either at delaying the marriage or thwarting the Count’s plans (who for his part has vowed to seduce the future bride). Mozart and Da Ponte’s first collaboration, this opera based on a comedy by Beaumarchais provides an opportunity to hear some of the most promising singers in the country. Alain Gauthier will stage the production, with all the talent and humour we have come to expect from him.

August 3 3 p.m.Versailles, 1785. Marie-Antoinette is bored out of her mind. Her husband, King Louis XVI, would rather build door locks and play the bassoon rather than care about her. But then, a mysterious foreign diplomat shows up at court. Discreet, attractive, and a virtuoso harpist… the young queen soon falls head over heels in love with him. When Marie-Antoinette decides to organize a concert involving both her husband and her lover, things get a little bit more complicated than what she had in mind….
In this humorous performance featuring works by Mozart, Grétry, Méhul and Devienne, Marianne Lambert (soprano), Mathieu Lussier (bassoon) and Valérie Milot (harp) draw the audience into the frivolous but hypocritical atmosphere of pre- revolutionary Versailles. With some liberties, this comic trio revives melodies which made hearts beat and sparked rivalries.

July 24-27 4 p.m.Displaying strong nationalist tendencies, Verdi is a feisty and revolutionary young man when he composes his first operas. Foreshadowing the break with bel canto, the young rebel seeks an ideal of uninterrupted drama, writing arias in which his tremendous melodic genius is already apparent. Presenting the works performed, the brilliant and irresistible Georges Nicholson will once again delight the public with his fascinating insights.
Major figure of 19th century musical theatre, Verdi gained international fame at a young age, which ensured him a prominent position in music history. On the program: excerpts from Giovanna d’Arco, Luisa Miller and Un giorno di regno, among others.
