Students have undertaken six challenges in order to obtain an insight into how a business operates and have seen their skills and confidence grow enormously throughout the competition, developing a business idea of producing a bin which sorts out household waste from recycling. The bin scans discarded rubbish and is connected to an app on your mobile device. The app sends a list of all the items that you have discarded and with a click of a button, these items will appear in the shopping basket of your favourite supermarket. The final challenge saw the students presenting their business idea to a panel of judges, who liked the concept of the product as it covered the theme of the competition; “Tomorrow’s technology solving today’s problems”. The team attended a pres- tigious awards dinner on Friday 4th July at the Excel Centre in Newton Aycliffe, where they were rewarded for their hard work and com- mitment to the competition. They won second place in the competition, coming top of the 25 secondary schools which were competing in County Durham. The team were also in the top 3 schools for “the best financial plan” and “best presentation award”. “It has been a brilliant achievement for the team and for the school,” com- mented a spokesperson. Enter CIC commemorates First World War with original musical

Enter CIC, the youth per-forming arts group based in Ferryhill, will com-memorate the centenary of the First War with an original musical. The performance, entitled ‘Home Fires’, will take place at Auckland Castle in Bishop Auckland on 28th, 29th and 30th July.Home Fires is written by Enter CIC Co-founder Paul Flynn, and follows several soldiers during the war. Explores the feelings of the loved ones they left behind and their belief in what they were fighting for.Approximately 100 people are involved in the sell-out production

including children, young adults, service personnel and veterans. The cast have been rehearsing for three months and for part of the research, youngsters interviewed ancestors of those who fought in the war. Recordings of those interviewed will also feature in the production. Andrea Flynn, Enter CIC co-founder said, “We wanted to do something to commemorate the cen-tenary of the First World War and we also like to have an educational element to our produc-tions.“There is a saying, ‘those who can’t remember the past are doomed to repeat

it.’ It is about passing on the message and ensuring those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom are never forgotten.”Enter CIC is a not-for-prof-it organisation which uses creative and performing arts to help young people realise their aspirations and reach their full po-tential.Since its formation in 2010, the group have developed a reputation for producing west-end quality productions, at-tracting professional actors and musicians to work alongside the staff and volunteers. For more information about Enter CIC visit entercic.org.

Ferryhill History Society will be holding its next meeting at 7.30pm on Wednesday 30th July at the Eldon Arms in Ferry-hill.The guest speaker will be Mark Ainsley, who will be ‘In Search of the Ferryhill Vikings’, and talking about how advances in DNA can determine descendants of Viking stock. Recent archaeological digs have revealed an Iron Age settlement at Great

Chilton. The Romans from Binchester needed farmers in the area to supply grain and fodder to the fort. The mediaeval settlements of Chilton, Mainsforth, Ferryhill and Thrislington are all well recorded, so where did our Viking and Anglo - Saxon ancestors live? This is a mystery which Mark Ainsley will try to solve, with the help of the people of Ferryhill. Everyone is welcome, in-cluding new members.

Wednesday 23rd July 2014 has been designated Historic County Flags Day. This is to promote Tourism and Identity in the old historic counties of Britain. A number of culturally and histor ically impor-tant locations in County Durham are to display the County Durham flag on this date, includ-ing Auckland Castle (former residence of the Bishop of Durham),

Beamish Museum, Barnard Castle, Bowes Museum, Butterfly World and Aykley Heads (Durham Constabulary HQ). Sporting venues including Hartlepool United FC and Durham County Cricket Club have also indicated they will fly the County Durham flag, as well as Durham County. Since the County Durham flag was first flown from Durham Cathedral on

21st November 2013, a number of the flags have been used to raise a considerable amount of money for various charitable events. James Moffatt, father of twins Katie and Holly, who designed the flag, said, “I would like to thank the good folk of Chilton and beyond for the fantastic support they have given my family regarding the County Durham flag.”

The annual parading of the Miners Banners of the Dean & Chapter and Mains-forth Collieries took place in brilliant sunshine on Friday 11th July, led by the Ferryhill Town Band. This year the Ferryhill Banner group placed a wreath on the William Walton Monument in the Town Hall Gardens, on

behalf of all Ferryhill residents, in memory of Mr Walton and in remem-brance of mine workers who lost their lives while working at the Ferryhill Collieries. Local resident Ms Glad-stone contacted the banner group and asked if they would do this. A spokesperson commented,

“We were delighted with Ms Gladstone’s suggestion and had no hesitation in arranging this.” Mayor of Ferryhill, Mrs Pauline Crathorne, kindly agreed to lay the wreath and The Reverend Mr Keith Lumsdon reminded the large crowd of the legacy the mine workers left for the people of Ferryhill.

James Michael Fox, of Ravensworth Road, Fer-ryhill, was sentenced to sixteen weeks impris-onment by the District Judge at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court, after the 22 year-old had pleaded guilty to charges of criminal damage and of using threatening words and behaviour. The court heard that at around 6.25pm on Friday 30th May, police were called to the Duncombe Stores in Ferryhill, having received a report of two men fighting. An unidentified male had

pushed past Fox inside the shop and an alterca-tion had followed, during which a shop display was knocked over. The two men continued their quarrel outside, which the defendant’s solicitor, Lawrence Petterson, described as “handbags at three paces”. However, Fox then returned to the shop and punched the window, causing £500 worth of damage. Later, Fox’s girlfriend went back to the shop to apologise for his behav-

iour. The Probation Service reported that Fox was making good progress and had attended all appoint-ments and was engaging with the service, as well as taking steps to address his alcohol problem. He had recently completed a government work scheme and had secured full time employment as a result. However, Fox had two suspended sentences hanging over him and the judge, in sentencing, stated that the defend-ant needed to learn a lesson.

New look for FBEC

Ferryhill Business and En-terprise College will gain a new look for September 2014. The school, which cel-ebrates it's 50th anniver-sary in the coming year, is renewing the external panels across the front of the main building. Headteacher, Kevin Brennan

said, “This is an exciting project for the school and the work is well overdue as a number of the panels are well past their best.“The upgrade of the front is to begin in the next few weeks and will be ready from when students return to school after the summer holidays.

“The school is also applying to the government for a major upgrade to the site, which if successful would bring in over a million pounds of investment into the structure of the building”.The government will notify successful schools at the end of the year.

With the school summer holidays now upon us, Chilton Town Council would like to highlight concerns about ongoing vandalism and nuisance behaviour at the town’s play areas. A huge amount of in-vestment has gone into installing equipment at the various play areas throughout the town, with more planned at the Pent-lands Play Area subject to securing funding. A spokesperson for Chilton Town Council commented, “The council want safe fun play areas for children to enjoy. However, over recent months they have been disappointed as van-dalism seems to be on the increase.”In February it was reported that a gate had to be removed from the Pentlands Play area as it had been damaged. This was the second gate in a

matter of months. As yet none of the gates have been replaced. Discussions with the supplier regarding alternative fixing is taking place to avoid repetition of these incidents. Earlier this year at West Chilton Park there was significant damage to the large tyre swing, and the safety matting, and more recently a piece of equip-ment has been stolen.“All of these incidents have been nothing more than mindless vandalism”, continued the spokesper-son. “The council would there-fore appreciate if resi-dents living around these play areas and, visitors to the park be vigilant and, if you do see or hear of any inappropriate behaviour, that you kindly report it to the police on 101 or al-ternatively to Chilton Town Council in confidence on 01388 721788”.

Jordan Reece Bradley, aged 19 of Church Lane, Fer-ryhill, has been fined £70 with £50 compensation, £85 costs and £20 victim surcharge by Newton Aycliffe magistrates, after admitting kicking a wing mirror off a VW Passat

shortly before 5am on 9th June in Ferryhill.Bradley was one of three men kicking mirrors off cars, the court heard. Lawrence Petterson, miti-gating said the teenager was drunk and apologised for his actions.

Ferryhill Business and En-terprise College held their Annual Red Carpet KS3 Cel-ebration Event on Tuesday 8th July. Students were nominated for prizes for outstanding achievement, going that extra mile or for exceeding expectations.

Each faculty in the school awards one student out of each Key Stage 3 year group. Approximately 40 students received prizes consisting of certificates, medals and a financial reward. Each Year Group’s Learning Co-ordinator also awards

a “Student of the Year” prize. This year the winners were Emily Hughes (Year 7), Jordan Jackson (Year 8) and Devin Gaskill (Year 9).As usual the event was well supported by staff, parents, governors and local businesses. A great evening was had by all.

Dear Editor,

In these times of austerity and massive cuts by our local labour led councils, who have had the power over Ferryhill and County Durham for well over a 100 years, it saddens me to see closure after closure and loss of services in Ferryhill and our local com-munities. However, after a recent visit to Ferryhill Community Hub (the once closed Leisure Centre) how refreshing to see hundreds of children and parents thoroughly enjoying themselves in the main hall. That not being enough, I wandered into the once Clevesferye Room to see yet another group of guardians and children enjoying teas, coffees toys and a bouncy castle with gleaming smiley faces around the room.

It certainly looks as though the idea of the big society has firmly landed in Ferryhill as our council strive to save money by closing community facilities within Ferryhill. It is a credit to the volun-tary sector workers, who put in hours of unpaid work to keep our beloved Ferryhill in the heart of the community. This begs the next question, whatever happens to our Council Tax monies after all of these services are closed? Do we get a reduction? Where does all this money go?

people have seen one or own one and do the 1st Fer-ryhill Scout Group still use this badge?” The badge itself was on a neckerchief.

The TGFA Division 5 Under 12s champions, Kirk Merrington, continued their unbeaten, run which started last year with them winning the Saltburn Gala trophy and continued with them defending the

trophy this year.It was a slow start this time round with two 0-0 draws, but they stepped up a gear and with five straight wins, including the 3-1 result in the final against Darlington RA 'A'

team, they regain the trophy.“Well done to all the lads and coaches for your hard work. We look forward to the next match and the start of the 2014/15 season,” said a spokesperson.

The weekend’s cricket got off to an excellent start with the cricket ground at Mainsforth basking in sunshine, Evenwood 1st XI were the visitors. Evenwood won the toss and elected to put Mainsforth in to bat first. The large crowd were then treated to a display of attacking batting which was a joy to watch. The Mainsforth side amassed a score of 237 before declar-ing in the 37 over. The star of the show was professional Muhammad Nawaz who was on 157 not out at the end of the innings. After the tea interval the Mainsforth bowlers set about their task enthusiastically and were soon rewarded as Evenwood wickets began to tumble. The beleaguered Evenwood batsmen were bowled out for 40 giving the Mainsforth club a 197 run win and a maximum 30 league points. The 1st XI were in action again the following day at home when Marsden were

the visitors. When Marsden batted first the Mainsforth bowlers were quickly into their stride, with the Sea-siders being bowled out for a modest 81 runs. In reply Mainsforth lost one wicket before reaching their target to set up a 9 wicket victory to round off an entertaining 2 days of cricket. The club 2nd XI also enjoyed a fruitful weekend with one win and one drawn match. The Saturday game at Evenwood was much closer than their 1st XI counter-parts. Mainsforth batted first and after being 13 for 3 early in the game, ended their innings on 112 all out. Aidan Cummings top scored with 53 runs. Although Evenwood came close they were bowled out for 101. On Sunday the seconds made the journey up to Marsden, and batting first they closed their innings on 199 for 7 wickets (Brady Smith 58). With Marsden fin-ishing on 153 for 6, the final result was a winning draw.

This weekend the 1st XI travel to Shildon on Friday night (18th) in a 15/15 league cup tie. On Saturday the 2nd XI are at home to Hylton in a league fixture.Sunday the 20th sees 4 teams take to the field to compete for the Craig Dargue memorial shield. The first game starts at 11am when an ex Mainsforth XI will play Evenwood in a 15 over match, followed at 1pm with Mainsforth playing Shildon. The winners of these two matches will then play in a 20 over final starting at approximately 3.15pm. All funds raised during the day will be donated to St Cuthberts Hospice. The players taking part make donations and a collection and raffle will also be held on the day. “Please come along and support the teams and more importantly help us to maximise the money raised for St Cuthberts on the day”, said a spokesperson.
