Once again, Ferryhill Town Council and the Ferryhill 2000 Committee played host to Ferryhill’s Annual Christmas Fayre on Friday 29th November. The event commenced with a Craft Fayre in St Luke’s Parish

Centre which was well attended by both buyers and sellers. Carol singing at St Luke’s church was followed by a candle lit parade led by Santa Claus in his sleigh, which ended at Ferryhill Town Hall

where children from the local schools held a carol service in the Town Hall gardens. At 4.30pm, Kelsey Short from Ferryhill Station Primary School switched on the Ferryhill Christmas Lights.Santa’s Grotto was located in the E Café which proved to be very popular with the younger children who attended the event. In conjunction with this, a fun fair was held on the Town Centre car park and this too was well sup-ported. All of these events were enjoyed by hundreds of Ferryhill residents and their families.Later in the evening the Ferryhill Town Band enter-tained local residents at the Manor House, where those attending joined in by carol singing.The Mayor, Councillor Kenneth Campbell com-mented that this was once again a successful Christ-mas Fayre which was well attended and enjoyed by many of the residents of Ferryhill. This support was appreciated by members of the 2000 Committee and the Town Council who organised the event.

The Mayor of Chilton, Councillor Elizabeth Bruce, has recently hosted a Charity Night and a Charity Coffee Morning - both at Chilton Workingmen’s Club.Thanks to the overwhelm-ing support, an additional £374.70 will be added to the charity fund, from which projects in Chilton and the local NSPCC will benefit once the Mayor’s

term in office ends.The Mayor, Councillor Elizabeth Bruce and her consort Councillor Alan Bruce would like to thank the organisers, Chilton Workingmen’s Club and everyone who has kindly donated, bought tickets and assisted at the events. More fundraisers are planned and will be adver-tised nearer each event.

ViVo! have held several successful charity concerts and are holding their Christmas Concert on Tuesday 17th December at 7.15pm, in the Ferryhill Village Methodist Church. A spokesperson for the choir said, “there will be a selection of traditional

well loved carols and songs and some new music, plus a little added Christmas fun”.Tickets are £3 for adults and £2 for children. The tickets are available from members of the choir or pay at the door on the evening of the event.

Community groups in Fer-ryhill and Chilton are to receive funding thanks to the Your Money, Your Area Your Views community grant fund. The decision on who got the money was made by

On Sunday 1st December Maddison Curle, a carer from Tenlands Care Home, Ferryhill did a 160ft Bungee jump from Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge in aid of raising funds for residents. Maddison managed to raise £517.00. On the day she was a little nervous, but it wasn’t until she actually stood on the very edge ready to jump, that she thought ‘what have I done’.Maddison had to first climb the 210 steps to the top

On Monday 2nd December, police removed a car which had been parked on newly painted ‘Keep Clear’ signs at the junction of the Rush-yford roundabout, near to The Eden Arms Hotel. The incident followed six months of complaints by residents of The Cottages in Rushyford. The side road, which leads into the hotel, is often used by car sharing teams, who frequently park outside the cottages and also at the start of the cul-de-sac leading onto the busy roundabout at the junction of the A689 and A167.

Local resident Peter Troy said, “I have made several complaints to the police about all types of vehicles that have been parked very close to the junction of the roundabout all day and night. This is very dangerous because many large coaches and delivery wagons have to drive on the wrong side of the road when leaving the hotel via the side road to avoid the parked vehicles, which means that vehicles leaving the roundabout to come to visit the hotel or the cottages cannot safely do so.

Crack down on illegal parking in Rushyford

“Drivers who are leaving their vehicles for up to 10 hours a day are not only breaking the law, they are also endangering other road users.” The police confirmed that parking within 10 meters of a road junction is an offence.Mr Troy added that, “I was delighted when two weeks ago ‘Keep Clear’ notices appeared in large white paint on the road, but astonished when a car sharing driver parked, ar-rogantly, directly on top of the newly painted road sign on several occasions.”

Mark Anthony Garr, of High Street, Ferryhill, was due before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe recently to face two charges. It is alleged that Garr stole a bottle of wine, valued at £2.95, from Broom Mini Market Stores on

3rd November and a pre-hearing condition in the case prevents Garr from entering the shop. The 23 year-old faces a further charge of robbery from Raj Singh of two bottles of alcohol (valued at £5) on 24th September.

Lewis Dickson, 21, from Adolphus Street in West, Seaham died in a crash on the A167 near Chilton shortly after 10am on Wednesday 4th December, when his car collided with an articulated lorry travelling in the opposite direction. Mr Dickson was pronounced dead at the scene. The lorry driver was not injured. The family are absolutely devastated and have paid tribute to Lewis stating he was a “lovely and kind” person.

Kirk Watson, 24, of Dar-lington Road, Ferryhill pleaded guilty to aggra-vated burglary, unlawful wounding and possessing a bladed article in public when he appeared at Durham Crown Court on Friday 6th December.On Wednesday 19th June, after committing a burglary of a Shildon property, Mr Watson fled the scene, unbeknown to him that his partner in crime and girl-friend, Sharnie Rank, had been detained at the scene by vigilante neighbour Darren Taylor. Taylor and another neighbour realised what was going on and in-tervened, initially attempt-ing to hold all three of the offenders until the police arrived. Once Watson had realised his partner was in trouble he went back to rescue her and confronted Taylor. Shortly after threat-ening to kill him, he lunged at him ‘like a madman’ with a ten-inch bread knife, slashing at him.Mr Taylor sustained seven slash wounds, one of which was three inches long, but thankfully his glasses pre-vented him from sustaining more serious injuries to the

face. He was given urgent medical treatment at the scene.The harrowing incident happened just before 6pm, in broad daylight and with children watching. The oc-cupants of the house were out at a wedding when Watson, Rank and another unnamed female, unlawfully entered the property.Paul Donohue, mitigating, claimed that Mr Watson “was carrying a knife for his own protection as he feared being attacked, but accepts what he did was outrageous, and is devastated at his actions”, which he added were caused by alcohol and he has since apologised.Mr Watson was sentenced to a total of six years and eight months in prison.Sharnie Rank, 23, of Mount Pleasant View, Spennymoor, admitted to burglary, plus two shoplifting offences and breaching a suspended sentence.Chris Baker, mitigating, said “She has a problem with alcohol and had turned back to it after being badly disfigured in an incident in-volving a bottle”. Rank was sentenced to a total of 18 months in prison.

Its effect will be to close temporarily to vehicular and pedestrian traffic the following road and footpaths to enable new sewer installation works to be undertaken:

A) vehicular traffic - a 50m length of Hunter Terrace to the western and southern side of Hutton House (Chilton Parish Council Offices).B) pedestrian traffic - a 35m length of segregated footpath that runs from the rear of Hutton House adjacent to the St John Ambulance building leading to Rosewood Chilton.C) pedestrian traffic - a 30m length of segregated footpath that runs from the workshop to the rear of Charlotte Terrace westward toward The Poplars Chilton.D) pedestrian traffic - a 30m length of segregated footpath that extends eastwards from the south eastern side of no.8 The Poplars, Chilton.

The maximum duration of the temporary closure under the Order is 18 months and is required from 13.01.14 for the duration of the works, anticipated to be 6 weeks. However, on rare occasions, alternative dates for closures may be necessary and these will be signed accordingly. There is no alternative route for vehicular traffic. An alternative route will be available to pedestrian traffic via other locally available footpaths in the area.

Staff and pupils at Cleves Cross Primary School would like to say a huge ‘thank you!’ to the ‘Friends of Cleves Cross’ for organis-ing, from start to finish, a fantastic Christmas Fair on Thursday 4th December. The Christmas Fair was a huge success and the children in particular enjoyed Santa’s Grotto, wrapping Christmas presents for their parents and decorating festive

logs donated by Hardwick Country Park. Lots of local businesses, The Women’s Institute, and Stuart Trotter, local author and illustrator of Rupert Bear books, attended the Fair, along with lots of friends, parents and helpers. “Christmas Fair takings were a fantastic £1211.78 so once again a huge thank you to everyone who organised, helped and visited the Fair” said a spokesperson.

Last week ‘me and our lad’ used our bus passes to travel to Newcastle. We went to Northumbria University to see the Norman Cornish exhibition. It was well worth a visit. Even though we had both seen most of his paint-ings before, they were amazing. So much true life, so much simplicity and sometimes obvious weariness. We enjoyed the short film too. There was footage of places and people so familiar yet sadly gone. It was like a trip down memory lane.

One of the pictures which held our attention was a large painting of Dean and Chapter Colliery at dusk. It looked like a cathedral with all the small windows lit up. It was called ‘Pit Gantry Steps’. I didn’t know what a ‘Gantry’ was, Eric explained that it was the steps leading from the lamp cabin to the shafts. I didn’t know there were 3 shafts, apparently Eric and Les Young, another electrician, always used the middle one – The Harvey Shaft.

My favourite one of the day however had to be ‘Berriman’s Mobile Fish Shop’ or better known as the ‘Chip van’. It currently sells at £6,480.00 (unframed). Those readers of a certain age who spent enjoyable nights dancing at the ‘Rink’ will all remember the ‘chip van’. My husband has always maintained throughout our 52 year marriage that he took me for a meal after the dance. What he did was stand in the ‘chip van’ queue and shout “will you put two fishcakes in please”.

Monday 2nd December saw around 100 DIDO (Days in Days Out) members enjoy a lovely Christmas Party.

After the buffet they were lucky enough to be entertained by a local lad the “fan-tastic” Mark Elvis Nixon, who is just home for Christmas after working all year in Majorca.

Then, Mrs Warner and her team brought all the boys and girls of Dean Bank nursery to sing for us, they were outstanding. They were so wonderful that “Santa”, who was also just back from Majorca! gave them all a present.

Thanks to all the committee and volunteers for all the hard work, to Mark, Mrs Warner and her team and to our ‘wonderful children’.

I would like to congratulate Katie, Holly and their father James on behalf of all the regulars of the Wheatsheaf pub and all the patriots of Chilton who voted for their design. I’d like to say they are a credit to our village. When we found out the news they had won the County Durham Flag design competition. We felt it was a great honour for Chilton and a very special moment, especially after been told by the Labour Council we had to take our flags down as planning permission was needed. This policy was later found out to be false. Then in our next breath to get a design made by Chilton people to fly over our beautiful and historic county.

On Friday 29th November we presented James, on behalf of Katie and Holly, a plaque in recognition of their winning design one was also presented to the Wheatsheaf which will be put up in their honour.

Ps Well done on the Wheatsheaf raising £415 for The Poppy Appeal.

Ferryhill Celtics incred-ible season continued when they played Ches-ter-le-Street Britannia in the Alan Smith League Cup.The Celtic, who had 9 squad players missing due to suspension and injury, started the game kicking into a strong wind. Both teams appeared to cancel each other out with both sides unable to create any meaning-ful chances in the first half, the Celtic going in the happier side having coped with the strong wind in their faces.In the second half the Celtic started with real intent. The talented Jonny Agar ran at the Britannia’s defence only

to be brought down on the edge of the box. The resulting free kick went inches wide of the post from a Neil Bell header. Next it was Liam Pearson who's shot was well held by the keeper. The Celtic were now in total control, with the classy Ben Clarey starting to pull the strings. Celtic continued to create chances but it looked like Chester-le-Street were going to take the game into extra time until a Liam Taylor cross found Andrew Agar at the far post, who struck the ball from a tight angle into the roof of the net making it 1-0 and giving the team one foot into the final.In the final 10 minutes

Chester-le-Street threw caution to the wind but the back three of Peter Robson, Neil Bell, and John Makepeace coped with ease and in the final minute James Fox finished the game with a great finish from 30 yards to put the Celtic in their 1st final of the season.Manager Lee Jewett said having so many squad members out, all credit must go to the players for a gutsy performance.M.O.M went to Liam Pearson.The Celtics next game is another quarter final at home to Houghton Mill with KO at 10:30am. “Please come along and support” said a spokes-person.
