Lori Jo Erlichman came to the district 20 years ago after only a few months in the medical field. Since then, she has served every building in the district except for one and watched the job change with the growth in both students and the threats to their health. Ferndale Record | MARK REIMERS

    A healthy education

FERNDALE Lori Jo Erlich-man hasnt really been anything but a school nurse since she be-gan her nursing career. Granted, she had spent several months working at St. Joseph Hospital before being hired in January 1991 by the Ferndale School Dis-trict. Back then, Erlichman was the only nurse for the entire district, a fact that reflects several stark differences between the stan-dards of those days and today. When I first came, kids had pills in baggies brought in by their parents and distributed by secretaries, Erlichman said. Today, school nurses are re-sponsible for knowing everything they can about the medical situ-ations of students and their fami-lies, collecting it from a variety of sources and then verifying it. Beside Erlichman, who works primarily in Ferndale High School and Skyline Elementary School, the Ferndale School District em-ploys three full-time-equivalent nurses. Two are full-time, with two others half-time. In her 20 years in the district, Erlichman has worked in every

School nurses are teachers in their own right

building except for Eagleridge Elementary School. Health is the main concern of the school nurse, Erlichman said, but the job goes far beyond that basic foundation. Students need to be healthy in order to learn, Erlichman said. So our job is still education. Nurses jobs are so closely linked to teachers that their con-tracts are included in the Fern-dale Education Associations (teacher) bargaining process and share the same payscale. And not only do the nurses act as educators for the students, but they also must do everything that they can to train teachers and delegate some responsibilities to them. This not only saves time for the nurses, but it helps teach-ers watch for safety and health hazards. The responsibility for some students, however, cannot be delegated, Erlichman said. There can be a single case that is intense enough that it cannot be delegated and it saps all the time out of our day, Erlichman said.

A changing job As it stands, the district has about 29 students dealing with conditions that are classified as life-threatening. Nurses employ ever-changing strategies in order to keep up with the demands of local health needs. One big change is the advent of the Internet which has meant a lot less paperwork, quicker in-formation turnaround and ac-cess to more tools and sources of information. However, the only problem, in Erlichmans mind, is the fact that expectations have changed so radically along with the arrival of the Internet. Theres the expectation that (the information) will all be in place and current from the first day to the last day, she said. Michael Berres, director of special services for the Ferndale School District, said the opening days of school are the most crazy for nurses. Nurses fight for every minute on opening days, Berres said.

Theres a lot of paperwork for critical students. Theres no doubt, however, that Erlichman loves her job, despite the challenges and changes she is forced to respond to.

    Different from ahospital

While hospital nurses and those who work in the traditional medical system usually have spe-cific jobs they focus on and learn, school nurses work in a world that requires a wide view. We need to know how to teach someone to do a tube feeding as well as recognize head lice, Erli-chman said. Its an enormous range. The work also requires a higher degree of independence than tra-ditional nurses are used to. They are very alone on the staff, Berres said. They are being forced to deal with requirements handed down from two state agencies at the same time: the office of Superintendent of Pub-lic Instruction as well as the state

Department of Health. While Erlichman admits that it is often a struggle to teach teachers to understand the im-portance of some medical issues, she also believes there is a reason why it is hard. Teachers are being asked to do the impossible, Erlichman said. They have to do a lot of medical services for their stu-dents. Theres a shortage on both ends.

Job growth Ultimately, nursing at schools means a nearly constant increase in demand, both from student population growth as well as the steady increase in threats to student health, or at least the awareness of them. This also re-sults in growing numbers of stu-dents who are classified with life-threatening conditions. Dealing with those conditions usually means working with the family as well as the student. Other growing challenges require a bit more nuance to handle, such as helping students who come to nurses for medi-cal advice. Sometimes the issue might be something as basic as dealing with stress and anxiety. All that is enough to force an ed-ucator to find an ideal way to deal with their own stress. For Erlich-man, its all about hula-hooping, a skill she picked up while watch-ing a hoop dancer in Bellingham. They say that every time the hoop goes around, it turns back the clock, Erlichman said.
