A mature learning environmentCourtauld House pupils aim to be high achievers in every area, whatever their starting level. Pupils explore an exciting and challenging curriculum and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding with some exceptional examination results, individual progress and success. High expectations, self-motivation, small classes and setting are the key to each child’s success, with Commendations awarded for outstanding work and effort.

Excellent computing and library facilities are used in research based tasks as pupils are prepared for the Felsted Transfer Examinations (and Common Entrance). German, Latin and French are added to the curriculum and learning is enhanced through visiting speakers and educational visits at home and abroad.

Enriched learningThe Very Able Pupil Programme extends those who are showing promise, while Learning Support and Study Skills are available to help pupils achieve their highest possible level. Scholarship opportunities exist in academic and non academic areas at ages 11 and 13 and the majority of pupils focus on the work that leads to transition to Felsted Senior School. Pupils can also be prepared for entrance or scholarships to other schools. Parents and pupils are always encouraged to meet with the Heads to discuss their child’s options and potential.

Through activities such as the Lent Challenge, Cultural days, League Charity days and Chapel services, children become more and more spiritually, culturally, socially and morally aware. As part of Felsted’s Round Square Initiative, pupils also become internationally astute through links with other schools and through activities such as Felsted’s Model United Nations Conference.

Time to perform

With a racket or stick, on the pitch or the court, our pupils develop a taste for sport which stays with them through life. Each year, our pupils’ enjoyment and dedication to their sport is rewarded by match success at A, B, C, D, E, F and even G team levels. Outstanding performances are seen across all our core sports, with regional and national success on a regular basis. Annual sports tours further enhance player performance.

Excellent facilities are matched by high quality coaching, with regular input from sports professionals, and all are co-ordinated by individual Heads of Sports and Felsted Senior School Directors of Sports. In addition to the core sports, pupils can take part in many of the other sports on offer during their daily games time, such as swimming, gymnastics, soccer, athletics, shooting and cross country. They are encouraged to give whole hearted support and appreciation to each other in all they do – win, lose or draw.

Opportunities for self expression abound in art and design technology, and through a lively programme of music, drama, dance and public speaking. Pupils get involved in numerous events throughout the year, sharing the impressive Felsted Senior School facilities, and often being included in events, such as the Senior School Play, visiting speakers and many musical ventures in the state-of-the-art Music School.

Felsted life is busy with extended school days and Saturday morning school to accommodate the full academic programme and the vast range of co-curricular activities on offer. With plenty of teaching time as well as opportunities to participate in competition and performance, achievement and enjoyment go hand in hand at Felsted.

Leadership skills

Parental involvement

A sense of community is reinforced by a League system that inspires loyalty, leadership and teamwork for competitions and activities. Year 7s are given Leadership Training before they reach their final year, where many take responsibility for leading their Leagues and in areas such as the boarding house, service, music, environment and public speaking. Continual leadership training throughout Year 8 ensures all the pupils have an opportunity to develop and improve their own individual leadership skills to prepare them for the more mature environment of Senior School life. Pupils’ opinions are continually sought and they learn to value themselves in different ways.

Parents are always welcome at School events and to help with activities and, through our policy of informal contact, parents are welcome to meet with staff at any time. Regular communication is also sustained via parent/teacher meetings, eNewsletters, workbooks, planners, reports and email. A thriving Parents’ Association organises many activities and social events during the year to keep parents in touch with the Felsted community, from netball, tennis, language classes and yoga sessions to summer parties, charity quiz nights and class Christmas meals. Parents are free to be as involved in School life as they wish to be.

Fundamental to the success of the Felsted community are respect and well-being; with friendly guidance children make healthy choices and use good manners. Tutors work closely with parents and other teachers to encourage their tutees to take personal responsibility for their achievement. Courtauld House pupils are privileged to eat at Felsted Senior School most days with its healthy food choices and the wider Felsted experience.

Flexible boarding options are particularly popular at this stage to meet the varied demands of modern family life. A nurturing family atmosphere in the Boarding House brings out confidence, independence and identity in the Young Felstedian.

Pupils are fully prepared and ready to move on to Felsted Senior School, or elsewhere, by the end of Year 8. The entrance examination taken at 11+ assures them entry in Year 9 provided appropriate progress is made. The Felsted campus may have become more familiar, but many more opportunities and experiences await them at this next crucial stage of their school life. With GCSEs only three years away, and the option of the A Level Programme or the International Baccalaureate Diploma on the horizon, you can be assured that Felsted Senior School will be a smooth upward transition. New pupils will join from other schools, some from overseas, giving Felstedians another new dimension to learning and friendships.
