The British Council were extremelyimpressed with Felsted’scommitment tointernationalism and thevery wide range ofinternational activitiesoffered at Felsted, forexample the ModelUnited Nationalsprogramme and theEuropean RoundSquare Conferencehosted last year.

Felsted hosted its fourth Model United NationsConference in March, welcoming delegates from 15schools across Europe, including Germany,Switzerland, Romania and Morocco as well asFelsted Preparatory School.

The Conference, themed around ‘Medical Aid’,welcomed Ms Maryam Khan & Mr Sanjay Joshi fromMédecins Sans Frontières to speak to the delegatesabout their work and experiences.

Felstedians furthered their MUN experience byassisting St Cedd’s School, Chelmsford, with theirMini-MUN and attending conferences abroad, suchas the annual Students’ League of NationsConference in Geneva.

Education for Social Responsibility

The 21st century presents our rising generation with an array of amazing opportunities,but also complex technological, social, economic and environmental challenges. ManyFelstedians in our schools will become the captains of new industries, leaders ofevolving businesses and people of significant influence in society. With that, comes aresponsibility for Felsted to prepare them with a comprehensive understanding of thesechallenges and to equip them with the skills, creativity and determination to be thechange makers who run the economy within the ecological limits of a finite planet.

To support these objectives, the Felsted curriculum will now highlight and challenge social, economic andenvironmental issues across the full range of subjects and for all age groups. The opportunities that Felstedprovides to grow aware and socially conscious global citizens continue to abound.

Felsted hosts Model UnitedNations for fourth time

Round Square ExchangesMax Bailes took full advantage of the School’s RoundSquare exchange programme when he travelled toAiglon College, Switzerland for a term.

Having been selected for GB junior ski training, it was afantastic opportunity for Max to be situated right in theSwiss mountains. Whilst on exchange, Max competed inthe British Schools’ Championship, helping the Aiglonteam to victory.

Another student to takeadvantage of Felsted's globallink was Ben Warner. Ben wasthe first Felsted student to beoffered a place on a RoundSquare Service Project andtravelled to India in July. Hespent three weeks travellingand helping to build and decorate at Lamdon School, Thiksey.

n Felstedians proudly wave the Felsted Flag at the RoundSquare Global Conference in Florida.

The Felsted Diploma merges together the philosophies andprogrammes of the Felsted Philosophy of Learning, theRound Square, the Duke of Edinburgh Award and theCreativity, Action and Service Programme (IB studentsonly) into a unique, single, coherent, personalisedprogramme.

The Diploma, which allows students in all yeargroups to select a programme of activitiesthat is specially geared to their individualrequirements, is now catching the attentionof schools across the country.

Felsted hosted the Chairman ofGovernors and the Principal from theUnity City Academy in Middlesbroughin June, who looked specifically at theDiploma and how this could translateto their school. It was also presented at the Round Square Global Conference inFlorida to much acclaim.

Three Yr 8 girls won the top Science and Maths prize in the National Championships of the Big Bang UKYoung Science and Engineering Fair 2013. Their project on ‘do heat protection hair products work?’ impressedthe judges and Professor Brian Cox described the girls as, ‘exceptionally bright young talent who rightlydeserve recognition for their project in this competition’.

Following in their footsteps this year are two current Yr 8 boys, who recently won the Junior Science andEngineering Prize at the Big Bang Regional Science and Engineering Competition with their project on ‘fruit asan alternative energy source’. They go on to represent the East of England at the Fair in March 2014. AnotherYr 8 boy received Runner Up in the Sustainability Prize.

Felsted Blooms atChelsea Flower ShowFelsted and Paul King, Gold Medal WinningRHS Chelsea Flower Show Designer andFelsted parent, exhibited a Bronze Medal

winning garden at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2013.

The garden, which commemorated the devastating loss of Follyfield,one of Felsted’s much loved boarding houses, represented the losssuffered and the prevailing “Follies” spirit, intertwined with hope for thefuture. The garden will be transposed into the the new Follyfield Housegarden in 2014.

Felsted featured in theprestigious Tatler SchoolsGuide for the fourth yearrunning. Described as‘mad about music’, Felstedis celebrated for its holisticapproach to educationand its recent partnershipwith the Junior Guildhall ofMusic and Drama.

His story of speaking outagainst his employer, Olympusin Japan, and the veryorganisation of which he wasCEO held the audience spellbound. Michael kindly signedcopies of his book after thelecture.

Felsted in top 10% for Value Added for a second yearFelsted’s ability to intellectually serve its broad intake, including its mostacademically able, has been confirmed for a second consecutive year. ‘ValueAdded’ has revealed Felsted to be in the top 10% of all schools, both state andindependent, across the country in terms of the academic value added to everystudent’s performance.

This analysis, introduced by the Department of Education, measures students’progress between different stages of education and has concluded that pupilscontinue to be more likely to improve their academic performance at Felstedthan at 90% of other schools nationally, both state and independent.

48% of GCSEstaken at Felstedare A*–A gradesFelsted students improved on lastyear’s grades as 70% of entriesachieved a B grade or above. 28%gained eight or more A* or A gradesand 97% achieved 5 or more A*– C grades.

A Level success

IB results Felsted achieved fantastic International Baccalaureateresults, with students averaging 33.3 points, over 3 pointshigher than the world average (29.96).

41% gained 34 points or more, equivalent to two As and one B at A Level.

The highest individual score was 41 points.

10% of students achieved 40 or points or better and a further 23% achieved 35 points or better.

James Wilkinson secured a place to read Physics at ImperialCollege, London with three A*s and one A grade in Maths, FurtherMaths, Physics and Chemistry respectively. James particularlyenjoyed Felsted’s teaching style and has enjoyed all the musicalopportunities at Felsted, reaching Grade 8 on the piano. Nothappy to enjoy a summer of rest, James rode an astonishing1800km from Paris to Rome with fellow Felstedian, George Smith,raising £4,000 for Great Ormond Street Hospital.

‘Women inScience’ dayFelsted hosted its secondannual ‘Women in Science’day in March, inviting girls fromschools across the county,including Felsted PreparatorySchool, to participate in a dayof scientific experiments.

The Apprentice came to Felsted in March when members of theRoberts Society were tasked with designing and marketing an EasterEgg. The winning egg, ‘EggEco’, was aimed at Fair Trade enthusiastsand won over the judges, leaving the nine remaining teams to be fired!

n Felsted Preparatory School chess enthusiastsare awarded certificates of achievement fromthe West Anglian Chess Megafinals.

Best-selling ‘Spy Dog’ author Andy Copeand his Border Collie, Star, visited FelstedPreparatory School in April to run a writingworkshop, whilst esteemed poet OwenSheers ran a creative writing workshop formembers of the Roberts Society.

During his visit, Owen also spoke tothe A Level English students abouthis literary works.

Owen, whose poetry collection‘Skirrid Hill’ featured as an A Levelset text this year, provided anopportunity for those sitting the examto really understand the messagesconveyed in the poetry.

100% pass ratefor ESBFelsted has achieved a 100%pass rate for both Yr 4 and Yr 7 since 2009. This year,88% of Yr 4 pupils achievedDistinction or Merit Plus.

Spectacular Science awardsFelsted Preparatory School hostedthe nation’s first ever BA CRESTMegastar Award Sleepover in June.

The Award, run by the BritishScience Association, usually takes anumber of months to complete, butspecial permission from the BSAallowed Felsted scientists tocomplete the challenge andexperiments over one weekend.

In the same month, Yr 9 studentstook a day out of lessons to partakein a variety of scientific activities andpresent their science projects fortheir CREST awards.

Arata Otake (Felsted 1999-2003) hasused her degree in Geography fromDurham and a Masters in Translating andInterpreting from Newcastle to travelextensively. After an internship at theUnited Nations Information Centre inTokyo, she was then InternationalCoordinator for Peace Boat’s GlobalVoyage, where she spent the followingthree years travelling to over fifty countries,engaging in peace educationprogrammes. Arata is now working inMorocco as a Rural CommunityDevelopment Officer, where she isempowering women and young girls through education and income generation projects.

Christopher Weston (Felsted 1988-1998) recently completed hisstudies at the Royal College of Musicwith a First Class Honours withdistinction, also taking first prize at theBrooks-Van der Pump Competition forPiano Accompaniment. Felsted became the first ever school to take both U15 and U18 sides into the DailyMail Vase Finals in 2013. Both Felstedsquads fought hard in tight games butunfortunately neither were able to raise atrophy on the day.

Kieran Norris (2009-13) continued to excel on theslopes, placed 1st GBR racer and 4th overall atthe Welsh Alpine Championships 2013. At theScottish FIS race he was 3rd in the U18 SuperCombined and 2nd U18 GB skier. As a sportsscholar, Kieran followed an individual educationalprogramme, aided by his Housemaster and Tutorto ensure he kept on top of his studies. Golfing sisters Hollyand Rebecca competedin the IAPS NationalGolf Championships,held at the famousRoyal Lytham and StAnne’s Golf Club. Hollywas awarded 3rd placein her age group andRebecca was crowned National IAPSGirls’ Champion and won the GirlsLytham Trophy by a 7 point margin.

Felsted announced its partnership with BlueHornets Hockey Club in 2013 and is workingclosely with the club to develop a Centre ofExcellence for Hockey. Many Felsted studentsrepresent this club and were members of theteams which played at the Club National Finals.The club ranges from U8 to U16 levels andincludes indoor hockey training. Chloe Rogers(GB Bronze Medallist at London Olympics2012) is an esteemed board member. n U13 Girls’ Netball tour to Guernsey.

Girls’ Inaugural Cricket TeamReach Essex Quarterfinals!

This year saw the first ever girls’ cricket team step outonto the wicket in the Essex T20 competition. The U15side produced a fantastic innings against Bower Park inthe first round, scoring 121-6 and bowling the oppositionout for 53.

n Felsted achieved its bestresults in four years at theEast Anglia Prep Schools’Athletics Championships2013, in which fivestudents qualified for sixnational final events.

A fortuneraised forFarleigh! Over the past five years,Mont’s and Manor havehelped raise in excess of£12,000 for FarleighHospice. Most recently, theManor girls proudlypresented the charity with acheque for £1,930. n Manor girls present their cheque to Farleigh Hospice.

n Bishop Christopher Morgan visited Felsted to attend aservice for those who wished to confirm their faith. The serviceraised over £300 for the Bishop’s youth projects in the localarea.

n Felsted IB students raised over £300 through theirsponsored swimathon, which they donated to the TaborCentre in Braintree. A representative group from theorganisation came to visit Felsted, where they werepresented with a cheque and took a tour of the School.

n Gepp’s Housemaster, MrBennett completed a 134km bikeride in June, raising a fantastic£1,300 for Prostate Cancer UK.

Felsted Pets’ Service The animals came into theFelsted Chapel two by twoin a dedicated service forpets. Parents, pupils andstaff gathered at the Chapel,with rabbits, chickens,lizards and even a pony intow, to give thanks for theirfurry friends.

Olympic FundraisingTo mark the one year anniversary ofthe London Olympics, the FelstedPreparatory School leagues took ontheir own sporting challenges, all toraise money for their electedcharities. An afternoon of sponsoredrowing, running, cycling, swimmingand walking challenges resulted in atotal of over £3,300 being raised forthe Leagues’ nominated charities.

Follyfield build well under wayThe building of the new Follyfield House is wellunder way, with everyone very much lookingforward to seeing the new boarding house risefrom the ground over the coming months.

Environment and Community

CCF successFelsted CCF has experienced a busyyear, which began with its biennial reviewin March. The inspection, conducted byMajor General PD Jones CBE, a formerFelsted parent and Colonel of the RoyalAnglian Regiment, gave the CCF theopportunity to showcase all it does.

The Combat Cadet squad won twotrophies at the annual Ex Combat CadetCompetition in May. The nine-personteam came first in both the March and theAssault Course, a fine achievement in the competition which involves 44,000 cadetsand tests all military skills.

Duke ofEdinburghGold AwardsTwo Old Felstedians, Jamie Charltonand Meg Browning, were presentedwith their Gold Duke of EdinburghAward certificates at St James’sPalace, London in October.

Magic MumbaiThirteen senior pupils travelled to Mumbai in October half term tovolunteer with Magic Bus, a charity founded by OF Matthew SpacieMBE, which aims to take a million children from childhood to livelihood.Working with marginalised children from Indian slums, the volunteers helped empower the childrenthrough sports and activities at the same time as raising over £8,000 for this worthwhile charity. Itwas a highly emotive experience for all involved and one which left them with a lasting impression.

450th History of Felsted

FelsTED’s Early LearningFelsted’s Early Learning classeslaunched this year, offering toddlersthe perfect introduction to theireducation pathway. The classes,held at the School and led byexperienced teachers, range frommusic and gymnastics to dance andrugby!
