International Fellowship of Rotarians of Amateur Radiowww.ifroar.org Rotarians of Amateur Radio (ROAR) founded in 1966 by its first President, Byron C Sharpe (W9BE), and is one of the oldest fellowships.
About Us.
• Purpose: provide a forum for the exchange of views between members who share an interest in Amateur Radio, as either licensed Radio Amateurs or as Short wave Listeners with a view to develop understanding, acquaintance and fellowship between members worldwide.
• Members: Rotarians, or Rotaractors or Retired Rotarians, or the Spouses of Members, who hold an Amateur Radio license issued in their own country of residence, or who have a genuine interest in Shortwave Radio.
Networking
• 400 current members from 28 different countries.• Each week, eleven established voice networks are
available for members on 80m, 40m and 20m bands throughout the world.
• Networks are scheduled about 30 to 45 minutes.• Members combine radio interests and Rotary fellowship.• Large membership chapters in UK, Japan and USA.• Additional communication via Email, Facebook
(members only) and Web Site (public) www.ifroar.org
Rotary and Community Initiatives
• Polio awareness to the world of Amateur Radio via special call signs such as VI4POLIO (Australia) and OU0POLIO (Denmark).
• Some members are also involved in disaster support as amateur radio can be a resilient means of voice and data communication until commercial facilities are restored.
• Usually operating a station at the Rotary Convention fellowship booth using a special Rotary Call-sign to promote awareness. E.g. This year the Convention call sign is HL16RI. (signifying the 2016 Rotary Convention in Korea)
Future Fellowship Possibilities
In keeping with changing times, ROAR is commencing dialogue with its members on the following:• Cooperation with other Fellowships (e.g. Travel and
Hosting)• Digital networking via amateur radio• VHF and UHF nets in cities – particularly amongst
younger members• Disaster recovery skill-based assistance to
organisations such as Red Cross.See you at Booth 2639 in the Hall of Friendship!
