In February and March various opportunities will be provided to you to pray. We will focus our Sunday teaching messages on prayer and will provide forums for your participation in this important spiritual discipline that demonstrates dependency on God.

One of the opportunities you will have is to sign up to pray once a week for the United States. In the Go2 Suite a new US Map prayer closet has been created to allow us to pray for our country. This is in coordination with Go2 Ministries’ Circles of Grace prayer project, seeking to engage prayers all across the US for the 1,765 Circles of Grace. Each Penn Valley Church campus has adopted a Circle to hold before the throne of Grace - read on in this issue to learn more about these adopted Circles.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Acts 1:8

A reading of the four Gospels in the New Testament paints a picture of a group of disciples who are sincere but often misguided. Instead of embracing the design for the mission Jesus had called them to and obeying the Father’s will, they were often found seeking to have Jesus do their will. As Jesus prepares to ascend to the Father’s side in Acts 1, his disciples are found asking him when he will fully restore the Jewish nation. Instead of heading in the direction his disci-ples were going, Jesus lays out his intention for them (and us). He says to them in Acts 1:8 that they would be part of a worldwide movement to make him known to the nations. Whereas they were comfortable simply thinking of the redemp-tion and restoration of their people, Jesus was pointing them to the bigger picture, a picture he had already begun re-vealing to them before his crucifixion, a picture of redemption and restoration of all peoples. In Jesus’ picture, the disci-ples would not simply be hanging out with people who they knew and were like them. Rather, they would be sent to people who weren’t like them at all. In fact, they would be sent to people they previously despised and who despised them. As the rest of the New Testament unfolds, we see the disciples, under the power and guidance of the Holy Spirit, following Jesus’ direction with the result being the founding and establishment of local churches throughout the known world.

Like Jesus’ first disciples, if we are not careful, we can find ourselves seeking to have him do our will rather than finding ourselves passionately pursuing him and his will. In Quakertown, we have been seeking to faithfully follow Jesus and establish the local church that is consistent with the Scriptures and in line with the vision we believe God has given us. In the process, we have had to determine what kind of church we will be. In their book entitled “For The City, Proclaim-ing and Living Out the Gospel,” authors Darrin Patrick and Matt Carter lay out four possibilities for the type of church a local church can be. They are churches of the city, churches in the city, churches against the city, and churches for the city. A church of the city looks like the city, not demographically or in its style, but rather in its very life. There is no way to distinguish it from the culture. It is not unique in the message it proclaims or how its people live. A church in the city is physically located in a particular city or town, but is not impacting that community. Rather, its members simply choose to meet their but have little or no positive influence in the community. A church against the city is one in which the dark-ness is railed against but the light never shines. The gospel of grace is not known in these churches. Rather than lov-ingly proclaiming the gospel and living it out, these churches repel others by their arrogance and condescension.

All three of the aforementioned types of churches miss the mark. However, there is a fourth option, a church for the city. A church for the city seeks to be relevant in its context, but does not sacrifice the unique message of the gospel or the unique life of the gospel community in order to do so. A church for the city is not only located in the city, but has deep roots in the community, seeking to bless and serve it. A church for the city speaks the truth, but does so in love because its members realize that the gospel of grace leaves no room for pride or self-righteousness but calls us to be salt and light, realizing that God loves us not because of what we have done or ever could do, but because of what Christ has done on our behalf.

As a local church, Penn Valley Quakertown deeply desires to be a church for the city and God has been using this de-sire to reach people for Christ. This isn’t unique, however, because God is doing the same thing at Penn Valley Bux-Mont and Penn Valley Telford, as his people realize who they are called to (Jesus Christ) and what they are called to (to be on mission with God). As we enter 2012, our prayer is that each person who calls Penn Valley home will desire to be part of a church for the city and use their talents, treasure, time, and gifts to that end.

BUX-MONT CAMPUS CORNER: Growing in God’s Grace

God continues to bless the Bux-Mont Campus here at Penn Valley. While we enjoy a great rela-tionship with the people of the Blair Mill Inn, where we currently hold Sunday and Wednesday meetings, it’s our desire to find a permanent location so that we are able to truly serve the sur-rounding community with a more static presence. Laying our plans before the Lord, we thought we had found the building in a facility located at 400 Lincoln Avenue in Hatboro. Things were looking good following the Hatboro Zoning Board hear-ing on January11. However, the Lord has other plans for us. At the 11th hour, the owner of the building decided to lease to someone else. While we were initially shocked over the sudden turn of events, we are rejoicing in God's sovereignty and realize He has something better planned for the Bux-Mont Campus. Over these past nine months, Penn Valley Bux-Mont has had the opportunity to get to know sev-eral key people in borough government - people we have been able to rub shoulders with and incarnate Christ before, including the zoning officer, the realtor and the president of Main Street Hatboro. All three of these people have offered to help us in the quest for another building, stat-ing that they see the value Penn Valley has brought to the borough over the past few years. Praise God! We have also begun a prayer meeting at 9:30AM, before the Sunday morning service. The Youth Group is making a prayer board to be displayed at the Welcome Center, enabling prayer requests to be posted and pulled so that we may always be in prayer for one another. This all came out of our Wednesday night Life Group study on Prayer. No doubt the energy for this will continue with God’s help and the coming sermon series on Prayer. Bux-Mont was able to partner with the Y Achievers in helping with a cleaning project at the Hat-boro YMCA. We had a great time of fellowship and were able to be a blessing to the community. Please pray as we begin the Habits of the Heart series in our Life Groups. Pray that the Lord would really open our eyes to the reality that our personal disciplines are really worked out in our community of faith. Pray that the Lord would continue to direct us to where He is working in the community, that we may follow His lead in bringing the Gospel to the Hatboro community by word and deed. Blessings, Pastor Tony

Charis Counseling Corner Depression: The Dark Night of the Soul

Part Three

“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?” (Psalm 42:5a)

Trying to understand depression involves looking at the whole picture. We need to address issues of the body, mind, and heart.

Our hearts are in the context of our bodiesi; therefore our physical state will impact our hearts. How are we taking care of our bodies? Are we getting enough good sleep and rest? Tiredness can cause us to feel depressed. Developing and maintaining good sleeping habits can help us get a bet-ter night’s sleep and alleviate depressive symptoms. Good sleeping habits include going to bed at the same time each night, waking up at the same time each day, and limiting TV/computer usage before bed (computer /TV stimulate the brain and make it harder to quiet down). Good sleeping habits mean sleeping without a TV or radio on, leaving our cell phones in another room so we aren’t wak-ing up to answer texts or calls, and limiting the amount of caffeine taken in during the day.

“You are what you eat” has some merit when dealing with depression. Bio-chemicals called neuro-transmitters found in our brains affect our moods. These neurotransmitters are made up of amino acids; we get amino acids form eating protein. Increasing protein in our diets and decreasing sugars and carbohydrates is helpful in elevating our moods and decreasing depression. A useful website with diet tips for depression can be found at http://www.webmd.com/depression/guide/diet-recovery.

Exercise (you knew it was coming!) is also important in dealing with depression. Exercise is a mood elevator and stress reducer - not to mention the other physical benefits. More information on the r e l a t i o n s h i p b e t w e e n e x e r c i s e a n d d e p r e s s i o n c a n b e f o u n d a t http://www.webmd.com/depression/guide/exercise-depression.

Certain disease states are linked to depression; diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and hepatitis. Hormone imbalances, thyroid issues, and problems with neurotransmitters in the brain are also linked to depression. It is important that a medical doctor is seen for a complete checkup not only every year but also if you experience depression symptoms. These symptoms are listed at the end of the article. If these symptoms are experienced for most of the day, every day for more than two weeks then a medical doctor should be seen.

Automatic negative thought patterns can lead to depression. What are negative thought patterns? They are the thoughts which just pop into our heads in response to situations. For example “all or nothing” thought patterns - things are either all good or all bad; catastrophic thinking - expecting the worst possible outcome in relationship to a trivial incident; forecasting - predicting the outcome of a situation and therefore not acting (i.e. “I know I won’t get the job so why bother”); mind-reading - assuming you know what others are thinking, and that they are thinking negatively about you or judging you. These are just a few of the patterns we can fall into which can lead to depression. The best way to correct these thought patterns is to challenge them with the truth of the Scriptures and sharing your thoughts with others so they can speak truth into your life as well.

Finally, when it comes to depression, the heart of the matter is the heart (soul). “Why are you down-cast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?” “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” (Psalm42: 5) What is he saying? Martin Lloyd Jones offers this, “I suggest that

Page 7: February/March 2012 PENN VALLEY LIFE

the main trouble in this whole matter of spiritual depression in a sense is this we allow our self to talk to us instead of talking to our self.” ii What I think Dr. Lloyd is saying we believe what our depression tells us. We are depression instead of a person suffering from feelings of depression. We listen to depression instead of speaking truth into it and taking ourselves to task. We listen to and believe feel-ings like abandonment - God has left me; hopelessness - things need to change but they never will; low self-worth - I feel worthless therefore I am worthless. If we listen to depression we only make the situation worse. We need to challenge our truth and what we believe just like the psalmist. Was the psalmist looking for the answer as to why he was depressed or was he asking himself why are you depressed when you have hope in God?

Life is full of difficult situations like death, pain, betrayal, and disappointment, just to name a few, and whether it is the situation, physical issues, or thought issues which cause depression, how are we going to respond to our depression? Could our response to our depression be creating more difficulty? What we need to do is not to ask why in search of the cause only, but also to ask why as in “why am I responding this way?” This gets to the heart of the matter. We act and respond out of what we believe. So maybe the most important question we need to ask of ourselves in depression is, “What am I believing?” “What is my truth?” “In what am I placing my hope?” “Is it my feelings that are truth and is my hope in being able to change my circumstances, or is my hope in God?”

If our hope is truly in God and our trust is in the God who says that He is love and good; if our hope is in God who has our best interest at heart; if our hope is in a God who does not act capriciously but perfectly and knows us better than we know ourselves, then after we have done what we can do (practical steps mentioned before) we quiet ourselves even in the midst of depression and wait and depend on God with hope and even praise for Him.

We may feel God has forgotten us. This is when we need to talk to ourselves and remember his faith-fulness in the past and his promise that He never leaves us. Also, remind ourselves that feelings are not truth. Depression may feel like it is going to destroy us; but the truth is the heat of depression can be used to refine us to bring out those things which God wants to take out of our lives, like the impurities which rise to the top of heated silver and are then skimmed off by the silversmith. We need to remind ourselves that just like a silversmith refining silver he never takes his eyes off of us and he will never destroy us in the process.

So, in the midst of our depression, where is our hope? “Put your hope in God for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” Psalm 42:5b Depression can be painful. Its source can vary. But our response to it can be one of hope. If you or a loved one would like to talk more about depression, please don’t hesitate to call me. We are all on a journey and some of us journey into deep valleys, but even there, there is Hope. In the next article we will discuss being in a relationship with someone suffering from depression.

Dave Griffith & the Tournus Choir Travel from France to Visit Penn Valley

April 28-May 1

Concert . Carry-In Dinner . Host Family Opportunity

· Saturday, April 28 The choir arrives in Telford at Penn Valley in the early evening. The choir will use the Auditorium for a short practice time preparing for the song they’ll perform in our Sunday Morning Worship Service. Following this short rehearsal, they will meet their host families, for dinner and their first night’s stay. Times to be arranged.

· Sunday, April 29 Breakfast with the host families, then host families bring their French people back to church. There may be a carry-in dinner following this service. More information will come on final plans. The Choir will not have a tour bus this day, so the host families will eventually have to take their people back home.

· Monday, April 30 Breakfast with the host families, then host families bring their French people back to church at 9AM. The choir will visit Philadelphia, attend a Phillies game, and return to the church late. Host families need to pick them up at the church. (We will set up a way to let host families know when the group is on their way home.)

· Tuesday, May 1 Breakfast with the host families, then host families bring their French people to the church at 10AM for final goodbyes and well wishes for a won-derful remainder of their tour.

Please pray about this opportunity to be a host family. We will need to house 50 people.

Hello everyone, 2012 is underway and we’re already busy with Missions. We already have many praises and opportunities on the way. In April, Dave & Susan Griffith will be visiting and this time they’re bringing 50 French friends! The choir Dave sings in, the Tournus Choir, will be in the US visiting various churches and tourist spots. They’ll be here April 28-May 1 and we’ll have a great opportunity to play host. We’re also looking forward to working with the Souderton-based Keystone Opportunity Center and to staging the FCA Sports Camps again this summer. The MINA Project will run on an every-other-year basis, so start thinking about your next project and look for its return in 2013. As always the Missions Committee would like to invite anyone interested in missions to join us. We extend a special invitation to those from the Bux-Mont and Quakertown Campuses. Meetings are the first Tuesday of each month at 7PM in the Telford Campus Coffee House. Feel free to contact me with any questions with regard to Missions at Penn Valley at 215-723-8487 or [email protected]. PRAY - GIVE - GO Mike Bishop Elder of Missions

NEWS Everyone at GO2 would like to thank you for your diligent prayers. Please continue to pray:

Pray for the continued adoption of the Circles of Grace by Springboard Churches/Partners and individuals. We’re trying to engage two-to-three peo-ple per circle; pray that God would raise up these people.

Pray for workers for the harvest field – that God would raise up church plant-ers to work with us.

Pray for the continuing development of the mobile apps to support the Circles of Grace prayer map.

Pray that 50 Grace Brethren churches to become our partners in the Decade of Multiplication, with a goal of 100 Grace Brethren churches from these 50 partners by 2020.

Pray for our Grounds4Good coffee venture, that more individuals and groups would want to purchase it.

Pray for momentum following our Circles of Prayer Summit January 9-10, 2012 in Orlando.

Pray for developing partnerships with other ministries which will help solidify Go2’s financial status.

Pray for a renewed sense of church planting energy among the Districts of the FGBC.

Dear Friends and Family,

I wanted to thank you all for your prayer and support for the recent trip I was able to make to Calcutta, India. I just wanted to give you all a recap of the trip and let you know what the Lord is doing in Calcutta. I also wanted to share with you how we were able to help our brothers and sisters in Calcutta with the extra money we were able to raise for the trip, and how we saw the prayers of our friends and family actualizing.

In our journey to India we were made nervous from the get-go when we quickly discovered that there were very few people who spoke our native tongue. We would also learn pretty fast that nothing in India moves quickly, we ran into this for the first time trying to get through customs in Delhi. We would have missed our flight waiting in the customs line, if it was not for a group of college kids going through the crew member only customs line. Being college-ish looking age Aaron and I were able to blend right in with the group and got through before they started kicking people out of the line.

During our visit we were given the opportunity to experience India like few people get the chance to. We spent time visiting the city and were able to see the poverty of those living on the streets out in the open. So often you hear stories of the poverty, but seldom do you see the faces of poverty. Seeing a mother sleeping on the side of the street with a few month old baby, and countless others living in these conditions really opened our eyes. We also saw those out in the remote villages living in homes of baked mud and thatched roofs. People who will spend a good part of their day walking just to retrieve drinking water and whose children desire an education but cannot cover the miles that they would have to walk every day. I pray that as I have returned to the US that I not take for granted these things that I often think nothing of.

Most of our time was spent with N&G (we were asked not to share their names or the organization they work with) and the children that they have come to call their own. N&G served as an inspiration of living life with a Christ like love. For while their society may be filled with sadness and those who are self-seeking, they go out of their way to love those they come in contact with on a daily basis. It was encouraging to see them live out their faith in an area where there is much persecution, and hatred. While at times we felt like a burden on them, N assured us that it meant so much just to be visited by someone from the states. It has been nearly six years since anyone from America has gone to visit them.

Through the giving of our friends and family we were able to help provide clothing to numerous children who will often only own one tattered shirt. Additionally, using the extra money that we were able to raise we were able to purchase a huge battery that will help provide electricity to the free-school N&G run. As we found while there, anytime it rains the electricity goes out, so this battery that you helped pay for will mean that these children will at least have one place they can go during a blackout that will have electricity. All in all, we had a fantastic trip that while it was emotionally and physically exhausting at times was well worth it. We saw the Lord at work across the globe and were able to give encouragement to a brother and sis-ter in Christ who are looking after the needy. Thank you! For the role you played in this trip.

Thanks- Ryan

James 1:27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.

Greetings & Appreciation From David Bature in Nigeria

Dear Friends,

I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Hope you are all do-ing fine. Rev. Musa Asake returned from the US, and some days ago,

handed me a gift of $3,900.00 from you.

I am writing on behalf of myself and my family, to let you know that we appreciate this gift of love to us. This has come in a time we were

fasting and praying to God, asking Him to help us raise school fees

for our children, two dependents, and ministry work. We pray that the

Lord will bless you a hundred fold for this great gift.

Thank you very much.

Yours in God’s Vineyard, David Bature
