SECOND CHANCES BECAUSE OF YOU

Page 2: AZHS Paw Prints : Winter 2012

An animal shelter is a place where dogs, cats and critters come until they go home with you. As I walk through our shelters this holiday season, I see tails wagging in anticipation, paws anxious to run and jump with their new family, and eyes bright with hope that maybe, this time around, they will find forever love, compassion and companionship. I also see our human friends stroll our shelters with the same hopes as our furry friends.

But it is our human advocates, volunteers, supporters, partners and donors who make the difference in the lives of homeless, injured and abused animals. And one thing is certain: over the past year, you’ve made a very measurable impact.

Through AHS’ Leave No Feline Behind cat adoption campaign, we adopted over 2,700 cats this summer. We continue to combat pet overpopulation in our community with events like It’s Hip to Snip made possible by AHS’ Circle of Friends and programs like AHS and ADLA’s Spay/Neuter Pilot program which, in just the first five months, has sterilized over 1,000 feral and free-roaming cats. And your involvement in this summer’s Project 121: Action for Animals and Pet Telethon raised an astounding $460,000 to help us care for the 121 animals that come through our doors each and every day.

As we look to the future, AHS is thrilled to announce plans for an expanded Behavior Modification Program. A small but mighty team of specialists will begin working with dogs who are unsocial or fearful in the shelter environment. We know these pups just need some extra time and training, and we plan to save the lives of over 400 more animals through this initiative thanks to your support.

For helping AHS save the lives of more animals, thank you. For helping AHS prevent unwanted animals from suffering on our streets through spaying/neutering, thank you. For all those who love animals, who advocate when it may be easier to turn away, who adopt when there’s already a full house, who foster when life’s commitments are already overwhelming, who volunteer even though they want to take every dog and cat home, and who donate although their wallet may be lighter these past few years, thank you. You are our foundation and our inspiration.

Sincerely,

Guy Collison Executive Director

Dear Arizona Humane Society,

We adopted Baron and as soon as we met him, we knew he and my female German Shepherd, Jayda, would be best friends. From the first day, Baron made himself right at home and he follows family members around the house like a little duckling. He’s so full of love.

He and Jayda are inseparable and often climb into the same crate together to take a nap (when they aren’t snoozing on the couch). We took the dogs to the German Shepherd Club for obedience training and Baron is such a quick learner.

I love coming home from work to be greeted by his kisses, and Jayda loves his companionship. I couldn’t ask for a better furry child, and we just love him to pieces!

Thank you Arizona Humane Society for all that you do, and for giving such amazing care to dogs like Baron!Sincerely, Kiah Erlich

ASK THE VET

Melissa Thompson, DVM, joined the Arizona Humane Society’s Second Chance Animal Hospital™ in October of 2011 after three years in the private veterinary sector.Dr. Thompson received her Bachelor of Science from Arizona State University in 2000 and went on to complete her Veterinary degree at Western University of Health Sciences in 2008. Her special interests include trauma medicine and reducing the number of homeless pets in our community.

When she’s not busy saving lives in our Second Chance Animal Hospital, Dr. Thompson likes to hike, ride horses and train for triathlons. That is, if she can fit it into her very active foster schedule which includes caring for ill and injured homeless dogs until they are ready for adoption. In addition to fostering, Dr. Thompson shares her home with five dogs, four cats, two horses and a tortoise.

Fun Activities for Fido We have been waiting months for the cooler temps and now that they are here it’s time to get back out and about with man’s (and woman’s) best friend. Below are just a few great ways to spend the day with your furry friend this winter.

COSMO DOG PARK Located in Gilbert, this dog park is a canine oasis. Four acres of fenced play area allows your dog to romp and play until their heart’s content with the main attraction of a man-made lake, a favorite for water loving breeds.

DOG FRIENDLY HIKING TRAILS Explore the rugged peaks and rolling desert as you and your athletic canine companion explore the trails at North Mountain Park located in Phoenix near 7th Street and Peoria. To find more dog friendly hiking trails, visit www.bringfido.com.

FLAGSTAFF NORDIC CENTER Tucked in the San Francisco Peaks in the Coconino National Forest, the Flagstaff Nordic Center allows pet owners and their leashed dogs to explore winding trails through some of the largest Ponderosa pines in the state, and will allow your friend a taste of a snow covered winter wonderland!

*Before frolicking, be sure your pets are up-to-date on their annual vaccinations.

Q: Is it true that the holidays can pose a danger to my pet? A: Yes, as homes fill with holiday spirit, curious pets can encounter many hazards they wouldn’t normally be exposed to. This holiday season, please keep your pets away from the following:Holiday plants - Poinsettias, mistletoe, holly, and Christmas rose are poisonous and should be kept out of your pet’s reach.

Holiday décor - Tinsel, ribbon, glass ornaments, gift wrap and other tree décor may entice mischievous puppies and kittens but if ingested, these items could cause serious damage to the intestine and may have to be surgically removed. To avoid this, decorate the bottom third of your tree with non-breakable, plastic or wooden ornaments or only embellish what’s out of reach.

Bright, twinkling string lights – Watch your pets around lights as they could be in for a shocking surprise. Be sure holiday lights don’t hang too low and remember to unplug the lights when you’re not able to supervise your pets.

Toxic tree water - Pine sap, mixed with water, makes a poisonous drink for pets, so keep the water stand covered with tin foil.

Holiday feast – The high fat content in the traditional holiday meal may cause your pet to develop an upset stomach or worse, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). Chocolate is also very toxic so keep sweets on high table tops. NEVER give your pet alcoholic beverages.

If your pet exhibits signs of persistent vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea and listlessness, seek medical attention immediately.

Look What the Cat Dragged In!It’s Hip to Snip As a leader in the fight against pet overpopulation, AHS is committed to providing the community with affordable and accessible spay/neuter services. Introduced in September of 2012, AHS’ Circle of Friend’s It’s Hip to Snip day is a monthly event providing free spay and neuter surgeries for the public. Hundreds show up at the crack of dawn to do their part as responsible pet owners, thanks to our very generous Circle of Friends.

Thousands Adopted Through Leave No Feline Behind Campaign Each summer, AHS becomes overwhelmed with litters upon litters of cats and their kittens. At any one time, AHS can have upwards of 700 felines moving throughout our shelter. Determined to increase feline adoptions, AHS launched its Leave No Feline Behind campaign in May of 2012. The campaign focused on enriching one’s life through pet adoption as adoption fees were waived in lieu of meaningful monetary donations. Thanks to the community’s support, over 2,700 felines found loving forever homes throughout the campaign.

Primp Your Pit is a Hit! Thanks to a wonderful grant from PetSmart Charities®, AHS offered reduced-cost spay and neuter surgeries for Pit Bulls through the month of August for just $20. AHS is proud to announce that over 200 Pit Bulls were the recipients of AHS’ Primp Your Pit initiative.

Fetch with a Major Leaguer Just days before AHS and the Arizona Diamondbacks second annual Bark in the Park, D’backs Pitcher Daniel Hudson and his wife, Sara, made their way to AHS’ Campus for Compassion. The two pet lovers spent the afternoon cuddling shelter pets and playing fetch with the homeless dogs of AHS. A huge thank you to Daniel, Sara, the Arizona Diamondbacks and everyone who came out to support AHS at this year’s Bark in the Park.

PLANNED GIVING

Why I Give “The Arizona Humane Society takes on responsibilities that require significant resources. I have so much admiration for the EAMTs™, who, with expertise, maturity, and courage, meet the needs of animals in crisis. Their rescue work is possible because donations pay for ambulances and the gas to power them, the technologies to equip them, and the medics to staff them. The heroic people in Admissions have never said ‘no’ to me when I turn to AHS with rescued animals; not when I showed up with a Pit Bull pup in my cat’s carrier, not when I handed over a single tiny kitten, not when I delivered a sick feral cat to the back door. Keeping the lights on for all who rely on AHS takes financial wherewithal, especially if a surrender requires treatment in Second Chance Animal Hospital™. Beezie showed up at my door filthy and solidly expectant. AHS would have welcomed the little Tortie cat, but I chose to keep her. When Bea’s kittens eventually had to go to the shelter for their surgeries and adoptions, I sobbed. My hat is off to foster care volunteers, generous people who have the courage to break strong caregiving bonds, then step up to the process all over again. Our financial contributions - yours and mine - help to keep so many programs that save the lives of animals up and running. It is all important work, and I feel good about partnering with others, both in my future giving plans and by my checkbook donations now, to support the mission of AHS.”

DONATIONS IN ACTION

Second Chances Because of YouStrolling through our shelter, it is hard to believe that the exuberant animals bounding about were once victims of hardship. Their kennel cards only tell half the story of where they came from. Yet your gifts tell the story of how their lives were impacted and how they were given a second chance.

Daisy’s Story The call came in to AHS from another shelter in the state. They needed help. In their care was a gorgeous, two-year-old yellow lab with a severe fracture to her leg and they didn’t have the medical capabilities to treat her. Through Project Reachout, AHS was able to transport Daisy to our Second Chance Animal Hospital™ where she underwent surgery. For the next five months, Daisy didn’t know life without veterinarians and hospital visits, but she never again went without love… because of your gift.

Jilly’s Story For Jilly, it wasn’t just about her. It was about the four kittens she was nursing under a front porch. Each day was a struggle… until she came to AHS. Although frightened, Jilly found comfort with the foster family who took in her entire family. Her kittens flourished as their adoption day drew near. Vaccinations and spay and neuter surgeries became a small price to pay as they bonded with their new forever family… because of your gift.

Belle’s Story Like many of the animals AHS treats each day, Belle was running through the streets of Phoenix when an AHS EAMT™ intercepted her as she headed into the path of a speeding car. The little tan Chihuahua was suffering from hair loss and an ear infection. She was taken to our Second Chance Animal Hospital, and through antibiotics and weekly skin treatments, Belle was quietly nursed back to health… because of your gift.

Each day your gifts are positively changing the lives of homeless animals like Daisy, Jilly and Belle. On behalf of all of us at AHS, thank you for your continued support of our life-saving services for the over 46,000 animals we serve each year.

Dear Santa, When some nice people brought me to AHS, I was a “stray.” Or at least that’s what the volunteers tell me. I didn’t know anything else. Now they’re saying I’m going to find a “forever home.” Do you know what that is? It sounds pretty great. They tell me it will have toys, and I’ll go on walks, and it’ll even come with a best friend.

I’ve been carefully watching all of the people walk by to look at me, and I hope one of them picks me to take to this “forever home.” I promise to be very good.

Thank you, Santa, Pita, Labrador/German Shepherd

Dear Santa, I was pretty sad when my owners left me chained up in the back yard, all by myself. I didn’t think I did anything wrong, but then the EAMTs came and I was worried. Turns out they were there to help me!

They gave me food and water, and now I’m just waiting at the shelter for a new family to come.

For Christmas, please make sure the EAMTs have everything they need to help other pups like me. And I would like new stuffed toys. According to them, I’m a good boy.

Thanks, Mick, Pit Bull

Dear Santa, I’m sure that apartment complex manager was pretty confused when she went to check the mail and she got me instead. You and I both know the postal service is no place for a kitty.

My friends here at AHS are pretty great. They give me toys and cheek scratches every day! I just want to make sure that the nice lady who brought me here and all my friends here in the shelter are on your nice list.

Thanks!

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

HOMEWARD BOUND It’s a kitten, err… bobcat! From afar, the little feline looked like hundreds of other kittens who enter AHS’ doors each day. But as soon as he opened his mouth to let out a meow, it was clear this was no ordinary kitten. The three-week old bobcat had been found orphaned in the wild.

As a nonprofit organization equipped to care for only companion animals, AHS immediately reached out to one of our alternative placement partners: Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center (SWCC). SWCC immediately took in the baby bobcat and will work over the next year to re-introduce him back into the wild.

AHS asks that if you encounter an animal who appears to be orphaned, please observe that animal for a few days, as often times their mothers will leave their young to find food but will return for them. For wild animals in distress, please contact the Arizona Game and Fish Department at 602-942-3000.

INCREDIBLE JOURNEY OF ABANDONED ARBORETUM DOGS Sadly, every day pets are lost or abandoned by their owners. For Boyce and Thompson, their journey was no different except for the help of multiple organizations and deeply caring people they met along the way.

Sixty miles away in Superior, Arizona, an Australian Shepherd mix and German Shepherd were found wandering the grounds of the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. The Arboretum’s staff delved into caring for the two as they searched for possible owners or adopters. When none came forward the two were transported to AHS’ Second Chance Animal Hospital™ for medical care and a safe and loving foster home.

We will most likely never know how Boyce and Thompson made their way to the arboretum, whether their friendship was years in the making or forged along the way, but what we do know is that they are now living life to the fullest, together in their new forever home.

Thank you to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Gold Canyon Dog Owners Group and the Humane Society of Gila County for helping to give these friends a second chance at a great life.

Community Can Help Curb Free-Roaming Cat Population AHS and the Animal Defense League of Arizona (ADLA) have teamed up to form a Spay Neuter Pilot Program focused on the free-roaming cat population. Since May 1, 1,061 cats have been trap, neutered and returned in the six zip codes that are part of the pilot program. These six zip codes have the highest intake rate of cats into AHS’ Sunnyslope shelter. Our mutual goal is to significantly reduce shelter intake before the 2013 kitten season hits.

If you live in one of these zip codes and are feeding outside cats, please make an appointment today to sterilize those cats. You will prevent the birth of unwanted kittens, stop neighborhood conflicts caused by cats’ yowling and fighting and help AHS focus its resources on sheltering and adopting out tame cats, while supporting ADLA’s efforts to sterilize free-roaming cats and decrease their numbers in our communities.

What the initiative does:

• Provides free surgeries for cats in targeted zip codes: 85021, 85051, 85029, 85015, 85302, 85020

• Provides humane traps for you to borrow.

• Provides tips and coaching on trapping cats.

• Provides an appointment at a participating veterinary clinic near you.

If you are disabled, physically unable to trap or have so many cats that you cannot transport them, ADLA volunteers will help you trap and transport cats (please know there may be a waiting list due to the high demand).

For more information, visit www.somanycats.org or call 602 265-7729 or email [email protected] to make an appointment. Even if you don’t live in these zip codes, you can help spread the word or volunteer!

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES

Expanded Behavior Modification Program As the state’s largest open intake shelter, AHS accepts animals regardless of age, breed or medical condition. Sadly, thousands of animals come to us who have been through emotional or physical trauma, yet they have no way of telling us how they feel. Often the emotional or physical scars result in behavioral problems that are no fault of their own.

AHS is committed to working with these animals one-on-one so that they too can develop a healthy relationship in a happy home. AHS believes that by expanding our Behavior Modification Program to include more behavior specialists, increased and more comprehensive training and equipment, we will be able work closely with dogs who are shy and fearful, highly aroused and resource aggressive.

Through this expansion, and your continued support, AHS strives to save 400 more pets each year. For those interested in donating directly to the sustainability of the Behavior Modification program, please contact [email protected] or call Lynn Schepp at 602-997-7586 x1036.

World Spay Day February 26, 2013 commemorates World Spay Day; a day devoted to raising awareness towards pet overpopulation and spay/neuter initiatives. Last year, AHS was able to provide over 21,000 spay and neuter surgeries on both shelter and owned pets, yet as a state with one of the most extreme pet overpopulation problems in the U.S., the need is still far too great.

It is AHS’ belief that spaying and neutering prevents animals from suffering on our streets and we are committed to making every day “spay day” through a variety of initiatives such as our Spay/Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP), One Spay at a Time and our Circle of Friends.

Stay tuned for detailed information on how you can take part in World Spay Day in an effort to combat pet overpopulation in our community.

Phoenix Animal Cruelty Task Force In 2002, the Arizona Humane Society launched its Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ (EAMT™) program, the first animal rescue and cruelty investigation program of its kind in the U.S. Since then, the number of calls for animal cruelty and investigations has increased steadily, amounting to over 7,000 investigation calls each year.

In March of 2012, as AHS’ EAMTs were responding to calls of abandonment and abuse, the City of Phoenix was receiving disturbing calls of their own. A dog graveyard had been discovered in South Phoenix. Investigations revealed that they had, most likely, suffered from disease, neglect and/or abandonment. Just as disturbing as their condition was the number of animals found – nine. Yet there was very little evidence tied to each case which happens all too frequently in abandonment cases.

Searching for answers, city councilmembers, local animal welfare agencies (including AHS) and law enforcement partnered to create the Phoenix Animal Cruelty Task Force. The task force is made up of 11 individuals who are committed to reviewing and recommending potential changes to legislation that would modify the existing animal cruelty laws while also helping to educate the community. The task force is just one more way in which AHS hopes to lend a voice to animals in need.

HUMANE EDUCATION

Students Make More than a PEEP with AHS’ Peer Education Enrichment Program When Compadre High Schools’ Jobs for Arizona Graduates (JAG) students first heard about AHS’ Peer Education Enrichment Program (PEEP), they weren’t quite sure about it. However, just a few months later, they were conducting their own Humane Education presentations for Children’s First Academy students.

AHS’ PEEP program utilizes a very effective strategy where senior students are

trained, by AHS’ Humane Education department, to conduct age-specific humane and character education presentations to younger students in the same, or another, school. This capitalizes on the senior student ‘role model’ effect, creates partnerships across school districts, satisfies community service requirements for presenting students and inspires future humane leaders of tomorrow!

This year, Compadre JAG students expanded to six presentations, coupling character pillars of Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Compassion with humane values of Empathy, Compassion, Kindness, Integrity and Action. They also expanded the program laterally by training their peers at Tempe High School to do the same!

PEEP is a win-win, to which the Compadre JAG students will attest after winning a number of awards due to their participation in the program.

If your school is interested in the PEEP program, please email Dr. Kris Haley at [email protected] or call 602.997.7586, x1015.

Young Animal Ambassador Spotlight One of AHS’ most creative and spirited young animal ambassadors is 15-year-old Alli Geller, a sophomore at Sunnyslope High School. Alli’s compassionate spirit and love of animals is most evident on weekend mornings when she holds a face painting stand at a local park near her home. Alli combined her unique art with her strong passion for animals and was able to raise $135 for our nonprofit organization. We could not be more proud of Alli and all that she is doing for homeless pets in our community. Thank you, Alli!

CORPORATE CORNER

On August 25, AHS celebrated our 14th annual Pet Telethon. The three-hour, live broadcast aired from AHS’ Nina Mason Pulliam Campus for Compassion, and there was no shortage of excitement! From our four-legged friends romping in the Puppy Pen, to celebrity phone bank operators, to special appearances by AHS alumni, over 100,000 viewers tuned in to share in our compassion and make a difference in the lives of homeless animals. But the most exciting moment came as a huge surprise – a promise to match all donations for the last half hour from Renee and Bob Parsons through The Parsons Foundation. Their generous contribution undoubtedly added some serious “buzz” to the broadcast. Phones were ringing off the hook and tails were waggin’ in unison! Viewers’ wonderful contributions were matched by the generosity of The Parson Foundation, which led to more than $460,000 being raised! We raise our paws to The Parsons Foundation for their amazing support of AHS and the thousands of companion animals we care for annually.

Christmas on the Farm This holiday season, Christmas on the Farm will feature a highly anticipated light display show! However, this isn’t any ordinary light show. This fun and unique holiday event captures the holiday spirit through a spectacular display of lights, all while supporting AHS. Christmas on the Farm is asking attendees to bring items from AHS’ Shelter Wish List, and participants who bring a donation for AHS will receive $3.00 off their admission ticket. Starting November 15, 2012 through January 6, 2013, the public can tap into the holiday mood by taking a drive through a true holiday wonderland. For more details, visit azchristmasonthefarm.com.

Referral Program Partners Locally and nationally, AHS has wonderful partners who designate funds to AHS through their special referral programs year-round. For example, Volvo of Phoenix gives their customers the option of choosing AHS as a benefactor in funds generated from a sale! We are always looking to expand our referral partners. COMPASSION IN ACTION

Beating the Odds 1-2-1 at a Time Summer 2012 marked our second annual Project 121: Action for Animals campaign. Where 121 represents the average number of animals AHS takes in on a given day, it is a monumental task to provide ongoing medical, rehabilitative, shelter and adoptive services for 121 new arrivals daily. Project 121 inspired thousands of animal lovers to understand the pet overpopulation crisis in Maricopa County, recognize the need AHS fills with our leading-edge programs and services, and ultimately support animals in need with donations to support AHS’ day-to-day operations.

Campaign Highlights • In six weeks, over $460,000 was raised to support AHS’ life-saving programs

and services for animals through a variety of fundraising strategies.

• AHS introduced our first-ever online Virtual Pet Walk where team leaders were able to raise funds online, resulting in $55,000 raised.

• For one month, AHS partnered with all 115 Arizona Safeway stores where customers were able to donate at check-out, resulting in $50,000!

• Project 121 revolved around the stories of six animals – the “Faces of Project 121” – dogs and cats who represent resiliency, hope, and the joy of pets.

• Nearly 100,000 Arizona residents tuned in to watch AHS’ 14th annual Pet Telethon which served as the grand finale of Project 121.

AHS is grateful for the support of thousands of donors, partners, advocates and to our 2012 sponsors and partners who were critical in the success of this campaign.

COMPASSION IN ACTION

IT’S A HOMERUN FOR HOMELESS PETS!As baseball enthusiasts gear up for 2013 Spring Training festivities, AHS will put its own twist on America’s favorite pastime. On March 23, AHS will take the field at the Arizona Biltmore to celebrate the 15th annual Compassion with Fashion event.

Over 1,000 fans will enjoy a seated luncheon; a grand slam silent auction; meet adorable adoptable pets; and experience an unforgettable fashion show! Proceeds raised at Compassion with Fashion will support AHS’ life-saving programs and services for homeless companion animals in Arizona.

Volunteer Spotlight Carrie Hughes has volunteered with AHS since summer 2008. With her trademark kindness, Carrie welcomes animals into the shelter in our admissions lobby then lends a hand in our Second Chance Animal Hospital™. Where she has truly made her mark, however, is foster care. Carrie shines as a foster mom, having cared for nearly fifty dogs, mostly with orthopedic issues. By temporarily caring for them at home, foster parents help them become adoptable pets. This investment of heart and hope, and of just a few weeks of time, reaps a lifetime of happy returns.

Carrie says of fostering, “I fall in love with every foster dog that I care for. It’s amazing to see what a safe and loving home can do. They’re able to relax and blossom into beautiful personalities. Even though I’d love to keep them all, I realize there are so many other dogs that need care and love. I know that AHS will find a great family for each of my kiddos, so that I can continue to help save lives and legs.”

The foster staff says of Carrie, “She is the most compassionate foster mom in the entire world! She’s such an expert at fostering orthopedics, and her fosters always come back so well socialized. Plus… she always brings us cheesecake!”

If you would like to foster animals in need, please visit volunteer.azhumane.org for our next foster orientation, or call Sharon Kinsella at 602-997-7586 x1040! Cheesecake not necessary!

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Our volunteers prove this week in and week out by helping our employees improve the adoption photos of our dogs, cats, and critters!

As you can imagine not every animal is in the mood for a glamour shot when he or she first arrives at the shelter. After all, it’s an unfamiliar place with new sights and smells, not to mention lots of animals and people they haven’t yet met. Often times, the identification photo of a dog or cat taken upon arrival needs to be re-taken to catch the eye of a potential adopter. That is where our artistic volunteers come in. By utilizing their knowledge of photo composition and light, their ability to catch the most endearing expression and their love for the animals, our volunteer photographers help our furry friends put their best paws forward.

Are you a talented amateur (or professional!) photographer interested in translating your art into new adoptive homes for the animals? Well, the Arizona Humane Society needs you. Ditto for amateur or professional videographers. Please visit us at volunteer.azhumane.org for more information on upcoming volunteer orientations.
