Membership, what does it mean to be a member of IHC?

Dear Friends,

If you drop by any gym this week, you'll see they're already star?ng to empty out a@er New Year’s. By next week almost every gym will be back to 'normal'.

I read that by September, on average 5% of the people who joined gyms in January are s?ll ac?ve in their gym memberships. In fact, gyms build their business model on the fact that as much as 67% of paying members will never use their membership!

It's kind of sad, that people pay money, join a club and never fully par?cipate!

It has me thinking about the church. How many people join the church and yet never use their membership?

Church membership has been a topic of discussion here at IHC lately. What does it mean to be a member of a church? I believe it means coming to worship, ac?vely par?cipa?ng in the life and work of the church and giving financially to support the work of God through the church. This is a very general answer, but there are also specific answers to that ques?on.

Each of our denomina?ons has different requirements for membership. In the Episcopal Church: Any person bap?zed in the parish is considered a bap?zed member. Any person who is a parishioner in another Episcopal Church who wishes to become a member of the Indian Hill Church may do so by reques?ng a le[er of transfer from their previous parish. Any person who is a member of another church in communion with the Episcopal Church (for example, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America) and who wishes to become a member of the Indian Hill Church may do so by reques?ng transfer of membership from their previous

congrega?on. Any person who wishes to become a member of the Indian Hill Church and is not a parishioner in either another Episcopal Church or in a church in communion with the Episcopal Church may establish membership by having proof of their bap?sm recorded with the parish office and received by the Bishop. Please speak with the Rector George Sherrill about how to do this.

In the Presbyterian Church: Individuals may join the Presbyterian Church by Profession of Faith and Bap?sm (for those who have never been bap?zed), by Reaffirma?on of Faith (for those who are not currently ac?ve members of another Chris?an church), or by Transfer of Church Le[er (for those on the ac?ve roll of another church.) Individuals may also choose to join as an Affiliate Member, meant for those in our area on a short-term basis who are ac?ve church members elsewhere. Especially appropriate for college students. Please speak with the Pastor Stephen Caine about how to do this.

Membership in the Indian Hill Episcopal Presbyterian Church ends either with the death of a parishioner or with the transfer of a parishioner to another congrega?on. Inac?ve members are those who have not par?cipated in the life of the congrega?on in the previous few years.

In the next few weeks we will be upda?ng our church membership rolls and it is a perfect ?me to reflect on what you believe it means to be a member of IHC. We need every member we have to be involved and suppor?ve. It would be a shame to be a member in name only of such a wonderful and thriving congrega?on.

A Le[er From IHN Outreach:

On January 8th we began our sixteenth year as part of the Interfaith Hospitality Network of local congrega?ons

who provide housing for homeless families in the Greater Cincinna? area. In addi?on, this Outreach provides our

congrega?on with a hands-on experience of sharing Chris?an love and be[er understanding of the homeless person’s plight. We welcomed four families: Shaira, Joesya 4 and Yacine 2 and children, Cheyenne, Harmony 10,

Kawon 8 and Jaden 1, Shayna and Harland one month old and Dominica, Ty’Aisha 11 and Ra’Dyaish 6 years. Later in the week Shayna’s other children Shyanne 7, Shah 5, and Carter 3. A total of 7 boys and 4 girls.

Because our co-congrega?on was Anderson Hills Methodist, our guests didn’t arrive un?l 6:30 (one evening 7:15)

and were picked up at 6 AM. This put pressure on our evening and morning hosts as leaving and arriving ?mes changed, but all adjusted and were wonderful to our guests. They loved all the meals and the privacy of their

rooms. The Youth who came each evening were adored by the children. Many were not from our church, but

friends of Kate Lewis and the Beck girls. Each evening in the library Wii matches were played (Kawon was champ), Twister, Headbands, and a new ball toss that Greg Sullivan put together, music.ly was used for vocal videos made

by the teens and kids. On Saturday evening a nail salon was set up in the Guild Hall to the delight of the girls and the volunteers.

Special thanks to our IHC staff for their support during the week Stephen as Overnight host, George and Karen

Sherrill, Overnight hosts, Jennifer Taylor and the Sunday school classes for making up the beds and pulng together welcoming baskets for each family, and the Youth who came Sunday night with cookies and played with

the kids. Bill Coons helped with the set-up and take-down of beds and the Guild Hall tables. Michael Whited for help with the sign-up sheets and master keys (that worked) preceding our week. And to the 85 volunteers from

our church family who made the week so special. First ?me volunteers were Jenny O’Malley, who brought a

delicious chicken casserole and the Krausser family Graham, Becky, James and Alex, our Saturday Evening hosts.

Sincerely,

Deanna Ashing, Holly DeWees, Susie Ackermann
