Quaker Heritage Center Observing 10 Years as ‘Teaching/Learning Facility’

As Ruth Brindle selected pieces to feature in the Meriam R. Hare Quaker Heritage Center’s 10-year retrospective exhibit, she saw faces of students with each artifact and museum piece she pulled from storage.

The QHC’s curator recalled the students that researched this or that piece, wrote the description for these displayed items or designed the presentation for a particular exhibit. It was a telling moment that brought to life the Quaker Heritage Center’s first decade in a way she hadn’t expected when first planning the exhibit that runs through Dec. 11.

Normal gallery hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“I can’t believe it’s been 10 years!” she said. “The thing that comes back to me the most is the number of students that have been touched by this place and the hands-on learning opportunities it’s provided.”

Brindle spoke about students working with collection management and inventory details, as well as internships involving design, writing, research and actually producing visible pieces.

“That says a lot about why I feel this place is important,” she said. “This is a museum on a college campus, but it really is a teaching and learning facility. It’s not just for history students, but also those in such areas as education, English, fine arts and graphic design.”

Brindle said the QHC’s greatest “fan club” is comprised of area Quakers. Those Friends revel in a center whose broader mission is sharing the story of Quakers in Ohio, America and the world.

“As we’ve built the center and built a solid reputation in the Quaker community, the trust that families and individuals have placed in the center is inspiring,” she said, noting that their interest far exceeds merely attending events at the QHC, but also how willing they are to loan artifacts of their family history.

“The community trusts this place with their valuable items — these are powerful objects that tell amazing stories.”

Also, the center has developed strong relationships with regional and national organizations such as Friends United Meeting, which had its triennial gathering on campus in 2011, and Friends Committee on National Legislation, the Quaker lobbying organization that regularly features the QHC’s traveling exhibits in its Washington DC offices.

The center’s reputation exceeds well beyond the Friends community as evidenced by recognition from the “greater museum world” and the support it’s received from such entities as the Ohio Humanities Council and Ohio Local History Alliance.

Brindle said the retrospective in the gallery features pieces from some of her favorite exhibits of the past decade, including items from the “visually cool” Quaker advertising display, the “Quaker Involvement in the Civil Rights Movement,” the “Bridges of Friendship” exhibit that brought the famous Ellen C doll from Japan and last year’s World War I exhibit with spin-off programs highlighting music, poetry and local Quaker and non-Quaker perspectives of the Great War.

“For a place that’s only 10 years old, we’ve told a lot of amazing stories, built a solid reputation and made a lot of progress.”

Wilmington College’s 25th annual Westheimer Peace Symposium will tackle the theme, “Making Peace with the Environment,” during three days of programming that culminates Oct. 13 with climate activist Tim DeChristopher sharing the story of his brazen act of nonviolent, civil disobedience in protesting an oil and gas lease auction of land in Utah

More on next page

Page 4: Homecoming 2015 - Amazon S3€¦ · Dewees of the Earth Quaker Action Team. Other guests have been tentatively scheduled. An opening reception and awards presentation will be held

DeChristopher, founder of the environmental group Peaceful Uprising, will speak at 7:30 p.m. in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre. All symposium events are free of charge.

DeChristopher protested a 2008 federal auction of public land for oil and gas leasing by successfully bidding on 22,500 acres for $1.8 million with no intention of paying. He was taken into federal custody, charged and found guilty, and served nearly two years in prison.

The national attention gained by his actions led to a call for a higher degree of scrutiny of environmental and scientific review for future government auctions of public land leases. In fact, the Department of the Interior subsequently cancelled a number of leases

Associated activities range from films and speakers to an exhibit of judged art and, of all things, a scything demonstration.

The screening of the film, The Lorax, will open the Peace Symposium programming with a screening Oct. 10, at 1 p.m., in the McCoy Room of Kelly Center. Snacks and activities for children also will be featured. The 2012 film is presented in cooperation with No Child Left Indoors (Clinton County Green Alliance), Read & Seed (Grow Food, Grow Hope), WC’s Activities Programming Board and Arcadia Learning Commons.

Wilmington Friends Meeting, 66 N. Mulberry St., will host Katherine Murray of Quaker Earthcare Witness speaking on eco-spirituality Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m.

On Oct. 13, the Peace Symposium will kick off with the film and subsequent discussion of Terra Blight, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., in Heiland Theatre. Terra Blight follows the lifecycle of computers from production through use to becoming a hazardous waste product.

Also, at 11:45 a.m., Andy Graybeal will present a scything demonstration on WC’s Collett Mall between Pyle Student Center and the Quaker Heritage Center.

WC’s Issues & Artists Series to Present My Brother’s Keeper

Wilmington College will open its 2015-16 Issues & Artists Series with the Cincinnati bluegrass band My Brother’s Keeper Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m., in Hugh G. Heiland Theatre.

Members of My Brother’s Keeper grew up together surrounded by such musical genres as folk, bluegrass and gospel. MKB is comprised of

brothers Benjamin, Titus and Joshua Luckhaupt on guitar, mandolin and fiddle, respectively, and Wyatt “Sawmill” Murray on upright bass.

They play original music and the MBK sound features tight, four-part harmonies, rock-driven vocals, blazing solos and complex, interlaced musical interludes. Their goal is to bring a fresh blend of bluegrass to new audiences.

My Brother’s Keeper is one of the fastest rising bluegrass bands on the Cincinnati music scene. The band is known for energetic live shows, creative musicianship and positive lyrics. It logged 12,000 and covered 24 states during its summer tour.

Their presentation is free and open to the public.

The film “Promised Land — What’s Your Price?” will be shown at 1 p.m. in Heiland Theatre. The movie features Matt Damon and Frances McDormand visiting a town to gain drilling rights for a natural gas company. Discussion will follow on the film’s theme centered upon the controversial gas extraction process known as fracking.

A roundtable discussion with community environmental program leaders will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the McCoy Room of Kelly Center. Guests include Lori Williams with the No Child Left Indoors program, Mark Rembert or Taylor Stuckert of Energize Clinton County and Pat Dewees of the Earth Quaker Action Team. Other guests have been tentatively scheduled.

An opening reception and awards presentation will be held for the “Making Peace with the Environment” exhibit, from 5 to 7 p.m., in Harcum Art Gallery. The show will feature works in various media by area artists highlighting relationships with the environment and natural world. Judging categories are high school, college and professional.

Westheimer Peace Symposium will culminate with DeChristopher’s 7:30 p.m. presentation in Heiland Theatre.

Banned Books Read-in to Place Spotlight on Censorship

Persons interested in personal freedom with regard to literature are encouraged to reserve a 12 to 15-minute time slot in which to read from their favorite banned book Sept. 30, between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Wilmington College’s Watson Library.

Wilmington College’s Watson Library is sponsoring the annual Banned Books Read-In as part of the American Library Association’s 33rd anniversary observance of “Banned Books Week.”

The event is designed to raise awareness of the need to be ever vigilant about the potential for reading censorship by government and other entities in American society

Books ranging from the Holy Bible to Harry Potter to Charlotte’s Web and To Kill a Mockingbird have been censored, suppressed, hidden, given limited access and outright banned some place in the world at some time. The United States has not been immune from this type of censorship.

In recent years, excerpts were read from such famous banned books as To Kill a Mockingbird and Huck Finn, in addition to The Day No Pigs Would Die, Decameron, Our Bodies – Ourselves, A Wrinkle in Time, Leaves of Grass, the Harry Potter series, Lord of the Rings and Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian.

Interested readers can reserve times by stopping by Watson Library’s circulation desk or calling (937) 382-6661 ext. 345 or 297. Refreshments will be served.

24th Annual History Lecture to Feature Larry Gara’s Personal Experience with the Freedom of Speech

Larry Gara can teach the freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment from a variety of perspectives: as a historian, as witness to history and as a participant on the front lines.

Gara, emeritus professor of history, will present the 24th annual Wilmington College/Daughters of American Colonists History Lecture Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m., in the McCoy Room of Kelly Center.

His talk is titled “The Constitution, Freedom of Speech and the Historian.” He will cover events in his life and career as they have reflected and projected upon First Amendment issues. His experiences have taken him from nonviolent demonstrations to the U.S. Supreme Court and prison.

Gara was a member of the history faculty at the College from 1962 until his retirement in 1992. He continued to teach on a part-time basis for another 10 years and continues to be active in the campus community.

Gasoline was 44 cents a gallon and a first class stamp 10 cents when Dorothy Gurtzweiler, Terry Inlow and Bud Lewis first arrived at Wilmington College in 1975. Also, the Vietnam War recently ended and Bill Gates started Microsoft while President Gerald Ford escaped two attempts on his life.

That trio and 33 other members of the faculty and staff were recognized for service milestones at a campus gathering Sept. 15 at which President Jim Reynolds not only expressed his appreciation to the three-dozen, but also all employees for their contribution to teaching and learning, and providing an often life-transforming experience for WC’s students.

“It’s important that we gather together as a campus community and celebrate our accomplishments,” Reynolds said. “I’m grateful to all of you for the work you do the for the College.”

Gurtzweiler and Inlow are a professor of communication arts and assistant professor of art, respectively, while Lewis is in his 41st season as men’s soccer coach, in addition to service as director of wellness and Greek life.

Reynolds added that, in 1975, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest landed the Best Picture Academy Award and its stars, Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher, took home Best Actor and Actress awards.

The year 1980 witnessed a failed attempt to rescue American hostages in Iran, as well as the eruption of Mount St. Helens and the assassination of John Lennon. It also found Douglas Burks, professor of biology, joining the faculty. The Pittsburgh Steelers won the Super Bowl, Robert Deniro was selected Best Actor in Raging Bull and Ordinary People won the Oscar for Best Picture.

In 1985, New Coke and Windows 1.0 were introduced, gas was $1.20 a gallon and “We Are the World” won the Grammy for Song of the Year. At Wilmington College, new employees included: Monte Anderson, professor of agriculture; Steve Spirk, women’s soccer coachand director of athletic development; Laura Baessler, purchasing manager; Judy Doyle, business manager for athletics; David Rupp, carpenter; Esmail Hejazifar, professor of physics; and Jim Boland, professor of education.
