Get To KnowWhat is your favorite movie and why?
Craig Johnson: The movie that made me laugh the hard-est is probably “One flew Over the Cuckoos Nest” with Jack Nicholson; he was absolutely brilliant in that role.
Adam Hoover: Definitely Three Amigos, it always brings such joy to my cold heart, especially the “My Little But-tercup” scene. Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, Martin Short are absolutely hysterical!
Zoltan Biro: “The Usual Suspects.” It’s such an original creative movie, with so many twists and turns. It has a great ending and superb acting. What’s not to love?
JM: Three Amigos with Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, & Martin Short. It’s pure genius! As a kid, I made my dad watch it with me like 3 or 4 times in a row.

NBTC Tennis Professional Rick Leach had a highly distinguised tennis playing career and we highlight his accomplishments be-low. Leach played for the USC Trojans and was the first player to be named an All-American in singles and doubles for four years in a row. He also won the NCAA Doubles Championship in 1986 (with Tim Pawsat) and the 1987 Doubles Title (with
Scott Melville). While on the tour, Rick won 5 Grand Slam Doubles titles, 4 Grand Slam Mixed Doubles titles, and 46 ATP Doubles Titles. Leach was a member of the U.S. team which won the Davis Cup in 1990, and achieved the #1 ranking in doubles in 1990. Rick is still extremely active coaching top players at all levels of the game and is currently the
head coach of the St. Louis Aces, Leander Paes and teaches students here at NBTC.
Congratulations to NBTC tennis profes-sional Rick Leach who coached Leander Paes to an Australian Open Mixed Champion-ship (partnering with Martina Hingis) What an amazing effort!
Congratulations to Mary Pruitt and Lau-rie Moroch for win-ning the prestigious 4.0 Grand Prix Mas-ters Women’s Doubles Championship! Great job ladies and way to make NBTC proud!

SUPER BOWL MIXER PHOTOS
We all want to hit powerful and consistent forehands. One of the best tips and sim-plest ways to ensure this on our forehand groundstroke is to think “Shoulder to Chin”. You have all heard the importance of proper
turn when setting up to hitting groundstrokes. If you have the proper turn on your forehand, your non-hitting shoulder will be touching your chin prior to execution (left shoulder for right-handers). If you have the proper balance on your forehand, your hitting shoulder will also be touch-ing your chin after execution (vice versa for all two handed backhand players). If your chin is NOT touch-ing your non-hitting shoulder prior to forehand execution, you haven’t prepared properly and the result will be a lack of power (our full body turn gives us power). If your chin is NOT touching your hitting shoulder following execution you will be off balance and the result will be a lack of consistency. Most tennis player’s chins do not ever touch their hitting shoulders after execution because they move their heads prematurely. If you move your head too soon, your hitting shoulder cannot touch your chin fol-lowing contact. This results in miss-hits. So remember: Shoulder to Chin before hitting the ball and Shoulder to Chin after hitting the ball! Implement this thought while hitting forehands and I guarantee you will execute more powerful and consistent forehands.

This month, I highlight the Pacific Sun League Teams, and give recognition to the the ladies with the most individual wins for their respective divisions. The following members have
the most wins in their divi-sions: B1: Cindy Paulsen, B3(1): Laurie Moroch, B3(2): Amy Web, C2: Leigh Carman/Jessica Huang/Kim Keirstead/Imogen Miramadi, D3: Diana Blatz & Lyn Mainiero, SR1: Kandi Arnold/Linda Huber, SR2: Michelle Mola and SR3: Anne Satterfield. Congratulations ladies on wins well won. Our ladies 4.0 USTA fall team has had their sectional playoffs postponed to the weekend of February 20-21. The Club’s three Hill & Canyon teams and Sundowners are also doing very well moving into the second half of the season. Stay tuned to next month’s newsletter for a recap of the top winners in their divisions, along with results of the USTA Betties sectional play. SINGLES LADDER
It continues to be a pleasure to watch so many members play im our weekly Monday Night Singles Challenge! First of all, let’s be hon-est, It’s fairly easy to say, ”I had a full weekend of tennis, I need to rest a day.” OK, we get it, sometimes we DO need a rest! But more than that, it’s inspiring to see members come out on Monday evenings, because singles tennis is tough, grinding and some-times lonely (hey, where’s my doubles partner to blame that shot on?) Sin-gles requires a “rubics cube” mentality for figuring out different styles of opponents (funny how the brain plays such a feature role when you’re all alone on your side of the court). B u t that’s the “challenge.” We all play doubles, yet sometimes there is no better evaluation of your own game than when you’re commanding an entire court and not just one side. it’s during these “lonely” matches that we can work on reducing the amount of our unforced errors, as well as improve our strengths, what-ever they may be. Then, we can take back what we learned to our regular doubles game and watch the singles work play dividends. Now, as we look towards the home stretch of the “inclimate” weath-er and sometimes damp courts, it is time to start gearing up for the NBTC
Club Singles Championships Feb. 27th through March 1st. This is where all the hard Monday Night Singles play gets put to the test. And are you ready? Why study for the test and not take the exam? Singles play is hard and the Club Championship is the ul-timate test, so sign up now with Heather at [email protected]. Despite some chilly Janu-ary evenings, Rob Prendergast and Grace Leung proved to be the NBTC Singles Ironman and Ironwoman of the Month. Both donned winter gear and played 3 matches each. with Grace chalking up 3 wins, and Rob a respectable 2 wins in 3 matches!
Well done. If you are looking to play some singles, and would like to be placed on the ladder, just shoot me an email at pkin-c a i d @ u s b e v.net. Once on the ladder, you will re-ceive weekly i n v i t a t i o n s to Monday Night Singles. Don’t forget
that Harry’s Monday Night Happy Hour Menus are reason enough to come out on Monday evenings. by Paul Kincaid *Singles Ladder Chair

HEALTH According to world-renowned scientists from a variety of disciplines, tennis is one of the best sports for you to play to increase happiness and health and reduce disease. Here are the facts:
1. People who participate in tennis 3 hours per week (at moderately vigorous intensity) cut their risk of death in half from any cause, according to physician Ralph Paffenbarger who studied over 10,000 people. 2. Tennis players scored higher in vigor, optimism and self-esteem while scoring lower in depression, anger, confusion, anxiety and tension than other athletes and non-athletes according to Dr. Joan Finn and colleagues at Southern Connecticut. 3. Since tennis requires alertness and tacti-cal thinking, it may generate new connec-tions between nerves in the brain and thus promote a lifetime of continuing develop-ment of the brain, reported scientists at the University of Illinois. 4. Tennis outperforms golf, inline skating and most other sports in developing posi-tive personality characteristics according to Dr. Jim Gavin, author of The Exercise Habit. 5. Competitive tennis burns more calories than aerobics, inline skating, or cycling, ac-cording to studies on caloric expenditures.
