Dawnings Continues – What’s Next?

Each new day begins with a dawn. As the old hymn states, “…morning by morning new mercies I see… great is thy faithfulness…” Whether moving through life as an individual or as a church, we learn to see the dawn as a new beginning. Like the dawn of each day, so our life with God provides new dawns over and over again. We can live a lifetime of fresh new days.

Dawnings: A Process Not a Program This process does not offer quick and easy steps to a determined end. Dawnings helps a church clarify vision, deepen formation, and focus engagement. Discernment, rather than decision-making, undergirds every element of the Dawnings process

Dawnings: A Shift to Missional Engagement

• Embrace a more missional lifestyle

• Deepen cultural awareness and acceptance

• Cultivate a beloved community of hospitality

• Bear witness to Jesus Christ

• Serve to help, not hurt

• Seek transformational development

• Broaden vision of God’s vision

• Expand use of prayer

Engagement not only focuses on God’s desires for the world, but also serves to shape the individual and the church.

Dawnings: What’s Next? Now that we’ve experienced the Retreat, what’s next for our church? The Congregational Design Process requires a team of 10 – 12 (plus three ministerial staff) who will gather for eleven 1 ½ hour sessions. Not scheduled on consecutive weeks, these sessions will take place at a pace that best serves and informs the church.

• Beginning with Retreat participants, the team will consist of volunteers from the church

• Dawnings Congregational Design Curriculum will be utilized to help guide the sessions

• An assigned Dawnings Coach will help guide each session

• The church will be informed, and at points engaged, during Congregational Design

• Any initiatives that come as a result will be channeled through normal decision-making channels

• Congregational Design will begin on a date to be determined around the beginning of March

As our church begins a new year, the Music Ministry at Walnut Hills continues to offer many musical opportunities. As we reflect on 2019, we must express thanks to everyone that offered assistance and participation to the many Music Ministry events.

It is very difficult to express in writing how proud I am of each participant and how touched I was by the Adult Choir Christmas Music Program “Emmanuel, God with Us.” I offer my sincere thanks to everyone involved.

The many hours of planning, rehearsing, performing, narrating, production, meals, construction and coordination that are involved continue to grow each year. The choir, soloists, narrator, and technical operators were exceptional. The unique mix of traditional and contemporary Christmas music and narration were inspiring. Many church members were touched by the message communicated through the music and narration. Thanks to each individual that participated in the program and those behind the scenes.

On Wednesday, January 8th, the Adult Choir resumed regular Wednesday night rehearsals at 7:00pm in the choir room. We continue rehearsing our Easter music “He Shall Arise.” These Easter music services will be Sunday, April 5th at 10:30am (Palm Sunday) and Monday, April 6th at 7:00pm. Please come join us.

If you missed the Children’s Christmas concert “Star of Wonder” held Sunday morning, December 8th, you missed an exceptional blessing. The children were outstanding! Please join me in thanking the following individuals for their exceptional effort. Jean Haywood and Bill Eanes for teaching the music and drama and encouraging the children to do the best they can do; Glenda Wade and Jean Harrison with costumes, Laura Cornish

who assisted Jean and Bill; Karen & Thorn Tayloe for the amazing backdrop and scenery; Graham Cheek for setting up and tearing down the sanctuary and other behind-the-scenes work; Dave Bolt for sound operation; and all the parents that assisted in many, many ways.

The children’s choir has already begun rehearsals on their spring musical. Speak with Jean, Bill, Graham Cheek or John Thompson if you children or grandchildren are interested in participating. They rehearse every Sunday evening at 5:00 in the choir room.

I would like to offer a special thanks to Steven Watkins, son of the late Herb Watkins, and Thelma Watkins, for his special music Christmas Eve.

The Music Committee would like to thank our church accompanists Carolyn Sandidge, Organist and Beverly Holmes, Pianist for the wonderful music they provide each week. They also graciously accompany choirs, ensembles, soloists and other groups as needed. They spend hours of rehearsal time preparing their music offerings. In January of this year, Beverly celebrated her 15th anniversary at Walnut Hills. Please take time to express your thanks to Beverly and Carolyn when you have an opportunity.

The Ladies’ and Men’s ensemble’s February and March schedules will be sent via email.

The Cantori Vocal Ensemble presented their Christmas concert Sunday, December 1st in our Sanctuary. We look forward to their spring concert.

Lulu and I thank the Walnut Hills church family for the Christmas cards, generous love offering, homemade goodies and gifts. As I begin my twenty-third year as your Minister of Music, it is a blessing to serve and minister to each of you!

Our Fruit of the Spirit for February is LOVE. A focus on Love is a great way to warm up the cold month of February. Our preschoolers will learn about God’s love for us, and how we can show love to others. Our Fruit of the Spirit for March is Gentleness.

In January, our school collected winter wear for F.I.S.H and the homeless to help keep our community warm during these cold months. This month, we’re making Valentine’s cards for patients at

the Veteran’s Hospital in Hampton. Our preschoolers LOVE sharing God’s LOVE with others! We will be collecting food for the Salvation Army in March.

February 19th Wednesday at 9:30 is our LOVE-ly Chapel Service. Everyone is welcome!

Carolyn Tyree Feagans, our featured writer for this month, has a keen interest in history and researches relentlessly the past for her authentic settings, weaving her stories through actual local, national and international historic events.

The Dogwoods are Blooming is set in the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains in the early 1900’s. The Barrett family is followed through three generations, experiencing snowstorms, floods

and an intriguing mystery as Central Virginia’s mysterious Monacans are woven into the saga.

Sharpe Top, a touching story, beginning in 1929, focuses on the Great Depression and the WWII era. The setting is Bedford, Virginia and its famed mountains, the Peaks of Otter. The story depicts how events of that time affect this small town and its mountain people forever.

Spring’s Return, the sequel to The Dogwoods are Blooming bounces back and forth from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Black Hills of South Dakota, drawing a vivid contrast. The title implies a dual meaning: the coveted season, symbol of hope and also Spring, the main character. The book deals more in depth with the Monacans and the Sioux.

Carolyn Feagans’ faith, combined with her love of nature and history, enables her to fulfill the gift God has given her – writing stories of hope.

If you would like to order a personalized brick for the Walnut Hills Baptist Church Memorial Garden, now is the time.

Order forms are available on the slat wall in the hallway. You will need to submit a form for each brick you order. The cost is $125 per brick. The deadline for orders is Sunday, April 5th. Order forms and the accompanying check should be either dropped off or mailed to the church office for final processing.

COMMUNITY OF FAITH MISSION (COFM) EMERGENCY WINTER SHELTER FOR THE HOMELESS

Preparation is under way for WHBC to host the COFM Winter Emergency Shelter 2020 for those who are homeless. We will host the shelter from Sunday, Feb. 16 to Sunday, Feb. 23. Guests are housed downstairs and will be given a hot evening meal, a warm place to sleep, a modest breakfast, and snacks for the day. Volunteers are signing up to operate the shelter.

The various tasks, and scheduled times are as follows:

Shift 1A- Guest Check-in: The Guest Check-in shift begins at 5:30 PM and runs until the over night crew comes in at 9 PM. Volunteers help with registration of the guests and store their belongings In a secure storage room.

Shift 1B-Evening Meal Servers: Meal Servers help serve the evening meal, usually prepared by someone else, and clean-up after the meal.

Shift 2 – Overnight Shift: The Overnight crew serves from 9 PM to 5:30 AM the next morning. The Overnight crew requires two men

and two women. At least two people are to stay away at all times.

Shift 3A – Breakfast Servers: Breakfast Servers serve from 5 AM to 7:30 AM and heat up hot items and put out cold cereal, fruit, and juices. Lunch snacks are placed on a table with paper bags so the guests can take what they want.

Shift 3B – Check-Out and Cleanup: The Check-Out and Cleanup crew serve from 5 AM to 7:30 AM and retrieve guest’s belongings from storage, sign them out in the shelter records, and perform cleanup as may be needed.

In addition to on-site service, members can help by donating food for breakfasts, such as frozen sausage biscuits, fresh fruit, orange juice or milk, and snacks for lunches.

A training session will be conducted on Thursday evening, February 6 in the Hospitality Center at 6:30 PM to discuss shelter operation and specific assignments. Sheets to sign up for specific jobs are available each Sunday at the Coffee Connection and at the Wednesday dinners. WOM’s 2020 theme is Unshakable Pursuit. Is our pursuit of Christ unshakable? Is our pursuit to show His love unshakable? Is our pursuit of those who do not know Him unshakable?

We pursue this journey through prayer, Bible study, and living our belief that each person we meet is a child of God.

We are reminded by Jesus in John 13:34, ‘ A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’

Consider pairing with a friend to pray together once a week in February and/or March. You might also want to share a Bible passage that has drawn your attention during the week.

I am honored to serve as WMU Director. Each woman in our church participates in the work of Women on Mission in some way, as an individual or together in a group. I invite each of you to participate in a group meeting, activity, project, or mission effort. Individually we can make a positive difference; together we can accomplish great things.

Let’s make February 9, WMU Focus Sunday, an awesome day for everyone! Each woman is invited/encouraged/begged to sing in the choir that morning. (Just show up in the choir room at 10:10 with a smile.)

Last year, 2019, was a good year for our church’s finances.

On the giving side, general offerings were up substantially from 2019, and included substantial online giving and gifts of securities. As you plan your 2020 giving, remember you can give appreciated securities and required minimum distributions from your IRAs directly to the church and often receive considerable tax advantages, especially if using the Standard Deduction in the latter case.

Designated offerings also were strong, including an anonymous gift toward enhancing the church’s website, and strong designated giving toward the three main mission offerings, toward Capital Improvement (in addition to the $25K included for this purpose in the 2019 budget), and toward the Christmas staff love offering.

Combined with lower expenses, these offerings gave us a large surplus last year, and, 2020 giving is off to a very good start…..keep up the good work!

As we are not in the business of building up surpluses, we have put in place an ambitious 2020 budget of $704K that likely will fully spend anticipated 2020 offerings. The $704K 2020 total budget

figure is the same as in 2019 but, because there are no mortgage payments, a much greater portion of budgeted expenditures will go much more directly to ministries. For example, sharp increases

in allocations for Capital Improvement and many organization and committee ministries are included in 2020 budget.

In addition, the 2020 budget includes a New Initiatives Account, which provides a pool of funds that can be applied for to initiate new ministries. Dawnings already has made use of the account, but substantial funds remain in it for other uses, and we hope to get several applications for its use. And you are reminded that our church has an Endowment

Fund to receive gifts to support ministries on an ongoing basis over many years. For further information, contact Tom Powers, Chair of Endowment Committee.

The Stewardship and Finance Committee appreciates the generous contributions you made during 2019 and is hopeful they continue at that or higher levels this year. There is much Lord’s work that remains to be done through our church, and we want the doing of that work to be fully financially resourced.

the church-year season that begins on Ash Wednesday, is a time of spiritual

renewal. Some people give up a luxury or vice during Lent as a form of self-denial; others undertake a project that benefits others.

The point isn’t to denigrate ourselves or to see how much we can do without. Instead, Lent helps us reflect on Jesus’ death. As Timothy Keller writes in The Reason for God: “The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and sniveling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet I have nothing to prove to anyone. I do not think more of myself nor less of myself. Instead, I think of myself less.”

series will help bring participants into a deeper relationship with and commitment to Jesus,
