Dear Friend, When I was a young girl I had a Siamese cat named Pooperdoo. That was the pet name my older sister, Mary, had given me, and it was passed along to my pet. I saw Pooperdoo as my protector. He was a feisty, quick-to-anger cat, so when I was home alone, scared of who-knows-what, I would envision him attacking some unforeseen invader. It was a ridiculous child-hood fantasy, but it didn’t change the fact that my furry companion brought comfort simply with his presence.
I believe this is one of the key benefits of pet ownership. When I was older, we used to joke about Mary’s Pekinese pet and how he was her “baby.” But now that I have my Labrador, Bear, I see that it’s more than a joke. Our fam-ily pets ingratiate themselves so much into our lives that they truly are family. To honor our animal friends, we have three outstanding feature articles this month: Pat Hennessy shares the need to act as protectors for the hu-mane treatment of animals; Raphael Smith writes about coping with the grief experienced with the loss of a pet; and, Dr. Michael Tarrant explains the need to address the root cause of illness in treating our pets.

Gary Krafstow, one of the foremost yoga therapists in the U.S. for research on yoga for back pain and general anxi-ety, visits The Yoga School of Therapeu-tics, 10400 W. 103rd, Street, March 29-31, Suzette Scholtes, director, an-nounced recently. Hawkins’ work is full of surprises. She captures images of an Americana that is disappearing, and creates art from her travels. F ive years ago our family moved into a new home and neighborhood. We began the ritual of walking the dog each day; and over time, have gotten to know most of our neighbors.
We also have gotten to know most of the other dog-walkers and the people on our route to the park. Our ambassador is Coco. She is an enthusiastic, tail-wagging, medium-sized mix of chocolate Labrador and Dachshund. She came to us from the animal shelter as a puppy. Without her our walks might be quite soli-tary...but with Coco everyone stops, speaks, often pet-ting her as she happily obliges their human need. We know all the dogs by name, though not all the owners. We hear their stories and concerns. There is the woman in her late 80’s with two dogs who shares her life with her dogs and a stray cat, Freddie the Free-loader. On warmer days, the woman with the day care in her home is outside with her young charges. Coco becomes a rock star and is petted eagerly or shyly by the children. The dogs in our lives facilitate human sharing and connection. The role of animals in our lives is one we
may take for granted. We may forget that our joys and sadness are shared with them and that they pay very close attention to what we are doing. Cesar Millan, in his “Dog Whisperer” show on the National Geographic Channel, teaches dog owners how to have calm-assertive energy. He says he rehabilitates dogs and trains people. His belief is that clearly com-municated rules, boundaries and limitations along with exercise, discipline and affection are the winning for-mula for happy dogs and happy people. As a parent and counselor, I have studied many par-enting approaches and the similarity between parent-ing and working with animals is striking. Animals have memory, language, understand symbols, are self-aware, understand other's motives, imitate others and are creative and resourceful. The apes, some birds and dogs have demonstrated the ability to progress to the developmental level of a 2-3 year-old and have IQs as high as 90. It appears that the animal-human relation-ship is more complex and multi-faceted than we ever believed possible. This relationship is reciprocal and mutually benefi-cial. Programs with prison inmates, children, people who are mentally or physically ill and the elderly, all demonstrate the gifts which animals give us as we pro-tect and nurture them. Perhaps the line between species is not really a line
but a continuum of connection. We share the same kinds of brains, though differently developed, and hu-mans have the dubious honor of having a more highly developed frontal cortex. So it seems we have some responsibility to facilitate this inter-species communi-cation--this inter-dependent relationship of mutual giving and receiving, protecting and nurturing. So, when you walk the dog, pet your cat or feed the birds, know that you and they are part of this recipro-cal relationship. Be open to learning more, open to possibilities of expanding relationships and apprecia-tion. I know I will.

F armer’s kids applied for their
driver’s license at age 14 to
help support the hard de-
mands of the family farm.
When I passed my exam, Dad warned,
“Always stop at the one-lane bridges.
Even if you see the other car pull over
and stop; let them go through first.”
After two of my friends on the cheer-
leading squad rolled their car over a one-
lane bridge, found in the morning by a
fisherman who saw the headlights, dead
with broken necks, the county started
tearing down the one-way bridges. It was
too late for these teens. The shock of see-
ing these young gals laid out for their
funeral in our cheerleading uniform
freaked me out.
The one-lane bridge became a meta-
phor of my life for a while. After getting
my degree I secured a job as a rookie
reporter with a major city newspaper. My
lovely blonde editor, for some reason,
assigned me the most boring tasks. My
older sister said it was because I wore
turtleneck sweaters and fake gold jew-
elry. Be that as it may, I wrote the state
obits, farm columns, hog reports, and
clipped articles that needed follow up.
She assigned me the graveyard shift,
which was fun in a way, as at midnight,
the police reporters would call in their
articles and dictate them to me for the
press room. I’d slam the old-fashioned
typewriter half way across my desk in a
hurry to get the words down. The report-
ers loved me because I could type as fast
as they spoke.
The state desk adjacent to our city
desk was led by a sharp, glass-eyed editor
who recognized my talent. He often gave
me leads to write my own by-line articles.
He said a stripper Bambi Lay (no joke)
was in town after protesting pollution by
walking bare breasted on the downtown
streets. She was given a warning to wear
her shirt.
When I met her for our interview,
she was so beautiful I understood why
men would want to throw money at her
high-heeled feet. She called her job a
“career” and said she was making great
money stripping. She made three times
more money than I did--by taking off her
clothes? I left the paper and went home
to Kansas City. I promptly applied for my
masters in business so no one-lane
bridge would slow down my career and I
could stop writing obits.
These bridges are a thing of the past
but I still slow down in the metaphor of
living life to let others move past me. For
example, every few months someone at
the Yoga School will ask me: “So what do
you do for your real job?” It astounds me
every time — they think teaching yoga
and managing a yoga school is a part-
time hobby.
But I have a good answer: “I used to
write obits.”

W ould you like your life to be a little Wilder? Yes? Well, I have the very article for you this
month! Ah, February. Most call it the love month with the coming of Valen-tines Day…but it can also be the time when we are not as enthused with those resolutions we made at the be-ginning of the year. We tend to need something to keep our spirits up. Let’s try something Wilder, that would be Teri Wilder, my “naked” interview for February. Teri is a gal that is a catalyst for letting your Spirit soar; she is a song-writer, singer, keynote speaker and woman who invites us all to “play big.” She travels the world inviting others to trust the flow of life and to live the dream. I started my journey with Teri at her 50th birthday party in 2006. I remember walking up to the front door of her house with another friend. I’d moved to Kansas City a year before and heard about Teri all over town. I commented when I walked across the front porch, “This is a lady I really want to know!” and what a joy it has been! A big part of living nakedly is to be willing to give up who you are for what you might become and Teri wholeheartedly lives this way. The songs she writes carry such deep meaning whether they are introspec-tive or hilarious. But, what I notice with her is that she writes and per-forms with complete abandon. She does what she loves even if she does not know how it will all come to-gether — because she understands that the “universe plots for her good.” Are we allowing ourselves to explore those areas that we love and in which we have innate gifts; or, do we think about the possibility of how our ideas might not work out so much that we never even try? How does Teri live with such clar-ity and courage? Well, as for all of us, life is a constant learning experience — if we let it be. Loss in her teens (the transitions of a brother, a sister and both grandparents) convinced Teri that the time to live her life is NOW. This has been the driving force for her music and spirituality. She did not allow herself to “cover up” her inspiration with distrust and fear, but has transparently used this wisdom to stay committed to her passion.
One of Teri's songs that I use as the theme song for my online radio show is “The But Song,” which hu-morously reminds us of how so often we live in the past, rather than trust the unknown future. We listen to our BUT…"I’d try that, BUT…" so much more than we pay attention our GUT; and our GUT wants so desperately to be heard! S leep is one of the
great mysteries of
life. Like gravity, we
still don’t under-
stand exactly why we sleep,
although we are learning
more about it every day. Good
sleep is one of the corner-
stones of good health.
How many hours do you
need to sleep to be optimally
well? If you are a giraffe, it is
two hours every 24 hours. If
you are a Koala bear, you
need 22 hours in 24 hours. As
a human being, experts tend
to agree that you probably
need seven to nine hours of
sleep — too much or too little
can have adverse effects on
your health.
Sleep offers rebuilding of
tissues and maintenance of a
healthy metabolism; and,
sleep deprivation impacts
levels of the major hormones
— insulin, adrenaline and
cortisol. In April of 2006, the
Institute of Medicine issued a
report that confirmed links
between sleep deprivation
and increased risks for high
blood pressure, diabetes, obe-
sity, memory loss, depression,
heart attack, stroke and im-
mune dysfunction.
The largest study of sleep
duration and mortality fol-
lowed one million people for
six years. Those who slept
seven hours had the highest
survival rate, and those who
slept less than four and a half
hours had the worst. Nine
hours of sleep or more each
night was also associated with
a higher mortality risk. In
general, a good night’s sleep
seems to be as important to
good health as a nutritious
diet and regular exercise.
Roughly 40 percent of
Americans get fewer than
seven hours of sleep on week-
days, and 71 percent get fewer
than eight hours of sleep. The
main causes for lack of sleep
are long work hours, long
commutes to work, excessive
television and computers.
If you are getting enough
sleep, you will feel well rested
and able to wake up in the
morning with no problem.
But if you are fatigued in the
morning, nodding off or
yawning throughout the day,
and just want to go back to
bed when your alarm clock
goes off, your sleep schedule
needs some tweaking.
Suggestions to improve
your sleep are as follows:
• Sleep in complete dark-
ness.
• No television right before
bed.
• Keep the temperature no
higher than 70 degrees F.
• Eat a protein snack several
hours before bed.
• Move clocks away from
your bed.
• Reserve your bed for sleep-
ing and sexual intimacy.
• Establish a bedtime rou-
tine.
• Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
• Exercising regularly and
meditating regularly can
also be helpful.

San Francisco group to expand Kansas City’s vegan options. The Café will be open every day serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The extensive menu consists of a mix of raw and cooked items, as well as numerous fresh juices and smoothies. In addition, continuing the all-organic theme, or-ganic wines and beers will be available. Café Gratitude is also recognized for the unique names of their menu selection. Coconut Milk
To make homemade coconut milk:
Put 7/8 cup shredded, unsweetened coconut in a blender. Heat, but don't boil, 1 1/2 c water. Pour 1 c hot water into blender and blend for 2-3 minutes. Strain through a cheesecloth and squeeze out the liquid. Put the pulp back in the blender with the last 1/2 c hot water and blend again for 1-2 minutes. Strain the rest the same as above.
Makes approximately 1 cup.
To make Chia Fresca:
Combine 12 oz. filtered water, juice of one lemon/lime (about 3 T.) and stevia or a little raw, organic honey to taste. Add 1 tsp. chia seeds. Let sit for ap-proximately 10 minutes, during which the chia seeds will gel and create a wonderful, tapioca-like consistency.
Makes 1 serving.

Eating Well in Kansas City
T here have been a few times in my life where something made such sense or touched me so deeply, that I incorpo-
rated it into my life immediately. In December, my husband and I visited the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center, where food is medicine and much more. Founder Gabriel Cousens, MD is known for his remarkable program to reverse diabetes, documented in the film Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days. Dr. Cousens theorizes that the over-growth of microorganisms and the toxins they create push our body’s “compost button.” We begin to break down, leading to debility and disease. Animal flesh, dairy products, stored foods such as wheat and oats, sugars, and processed foods introduce and feed undesirable microorganisms. This theory has come into greater accep-tance now, with most gastroenterolo-gists now recommending probiotics to drive out unwanted microorganisms. If you still doubt this, just think how of-ten how often tainted meat, dairy and even spinach and almonds fertilized with sewage sludge make the news. To turn off the composting program, Dr. Cousens recommends a nutrient-dense, low-calorie, high-enzyme diet of vegetables, sea vegetables, nuts and seeds, raw or heated to no more than 115 degrees F. He avoids cooked food because nutrients and enzymes that prevent composting are lost. He rec-ommends fresh organic food because for many reasons, conventional pro-duce is devitalized to the point where it supports “composting.” Members of the Tree of Life community tested what he now calls Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine. Within three months, symp-toms disappeared while energy and mental clarity returned. I’ve been curious about the raw life-style for a while but found the food either boring, too sweet or impractical for the home cook. What we found at Tree of Life was a delicious, simple way to eat that felt great. The basis for day-to-day eating is an extraordinary salad and a pate. Imag-ine fresh spinach, arugula, lettuces, dandelion and other leafy greens with bell pepper, avocado, sea vegetables and fresh herbs. The dressing is a nu-trient rich, creamy and flavorful part of the meal, rather than a condiment with little nutritional value. The pate, a
creative mix of nuts, seeds, vegetables and seasonings, gives the meal staying power. Dr. Cousen’s also offers excep-tionally tasty entrees from many world cuisines. Except for crackers and bread, these recipes require at most one to two hours of dehydrating at 145 degrees F, the low setting of an oven, if they need it at all. Dr. Cousens has adapted the Rain-bow Green Live-Food Cuisine to all constitutional types, even ones most systems say should eat meat. Consider-ing the future of our planet, it doesn’t make sense for us to be eating meat as we do, even if it were produced in a healthy way. It requires huge amounts of fuel, water and other resources. In a mixing bowl, place radish, sprouts, frisee, red onion and parsley leaves and toss. Add crumbled pork rind, cranberries and the tamarind vinaigrette dressing. Toss well. Season with salt, pepper and tajin. Toss well. Garnish with manchego cheese over the salad.

T his is my second visit with “In the Kitchen” at You Say Tomato. Located at 28th & Holmes, owners/chefs
Randy Parks and Mark Wingard con-tinue the spirit of its original owners over 80 years ago. The space began as a neighborhood grocery run by the Weneck Brothers. Mr. Weneck was devoted to the neighborhood he served. During the depression years, when families struggled to feed their children, Mr. Weneck “extended credit” so no one would go hungry. According to his daughter, Jane Booser-Gorman, every family repaid Mr. Weneck when times were better. Randy and Mark have re-created this atmosphere at You Say Tomato. Both took great care during renova-tion to preserve the original fixtures and finishes. An old Weneck Brothers sign was discovered in a walk-in re-frigerator, restored and now hangs over the kitchen area. Neighbors joined in some of the clean-up work and lent (or gave) tables and chairs for the customers. You will find ex-ecutives, artists, civic leaders and neighborhood folks all eating family style around a 1950’s Formica and chrome kitchen table. The grocery section of You Say Tomato is stocked primarily with organic produce and packaged goods. Their goal is to source as much local as possible and maintain on-going relationships with their growers. Randy, who grew up on a farm in Kansas, learned a deep respect for the land and the people who work on it. Also an artist and carpenter (he has helped to restore several of the Victo-rian homes in the neighborhood), Randy found another outlet for his
creativity…cooking. At You Say Tomato, you can enjoy a combination of old family recipes along with innovative approaches to cooking. The signature dish featured this month is a gluten-free, home-made style fried chicken (organic, of course)…and is some of the best I have ever eaten. Randy spent weeks developing the recipe for Mark and his customers who require gluten-free diets. (Vegetarian and vegan dishes are on the menu as well). Both the atmosphere and the food at You Say Tomato will nourish you. Home-Made Fried Chicken Ingredients: 1 free-range organic chicken cut up into serv-ing pieces, skin removed and soaked overnight in buttermilk 1 tbsp of poultry seasoning 5 bay leaves 1 quart buttermilk 1½ cups of BeFree Bakers Gluten Free Flour 1 tbsp of fine ground pepper 2 tsp of granulated garlic (not powder) 3/4 cup Kosher salt 2 cups dehydrated potato flakes Peanut oil for frying
Directions: Bring a stock pot of water with poultry season-ing and bay leaves to a boil. When temperature of chicken reaches 170 de-grees, remove and let dry on paper towels. Prepare slurry with buttermilk, gluten-free flower, pepper, garlic and salt. Heat ½ inch of peanut oil in frying pan (preferably cast iron) to 325 degrees. Coat chicken pieces with slurry, then dredge through potato flakes. Carefully place chicken in frying pan and ad-just heat to maintain temperature. Remove chicken and place on paper towels to drain.
Squash & Butter Maple Sauce: Ingredients: 1 Triamble (clover leaf) Squash, slice and seeded Canola oil Garlic granules Kosher salt & fresh cracked pepper 1 stick of unsalted butter ¼ cup of brown sugar 1 tablespoon of Maple syrup
Directions: Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Brush squash slices with Canola oil and season with garlic, salt & pepper (to taste). Bake on a sheet pan for 45 minutes or until tender. When cool enough to handle, scoop squash from skin and lightly mash. Heat butter, sugar and maple syrup on low heat until thicken. Top mashes squash with syrup
Brussel Sprouts with Balsamic Vinegar Syrup Ingredients: Brussel sprouts (about 25 or 30) Olive oil Kosher salt & fresh cracked pepper 2 cups balsamic vinegar
Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Wash, trim and halve the sprouts. Toss with olive oil and season with S & P. Roast on sheet pan for 20 to 25 minutes (toss occasionally). Place balsamic vinegar in a sauce pan and cook over medium heat until reduced to a syrup consistency. Top roasted sprouts with balsamic syrup and toasted pecans.

Your Body is Talking...Are You Listening?
Eating Well in Kansas City
O ur bodies have much to tell us if we tune in and listen. Often, our body is the first to know when we are
exhausted, uneasy, joyful or ener-getic; and, we need to listen closely and re-spond to something that is causing us pain or disease. Paying attention to the unspoken
language of your body can open up windows of insight that can put you on a path to bet-ter health. I learned to listen to my body 10 years
ago after suffering 15 years of chronic pain and crippling arthritis—for which I was tak-ing seven prescriptions. Everything I ate made me feel sick. A friend referred me to
an acupuncturist who gave me hope when he said, “You can get your health back if you change what you eat and learn to listen to your body.” Learning to listen to my body
launched me on a path that renewed my health, eliminated the chronic pain and pre-scription drugs. Today I am blessed with good health. I began to learn to listen to my body by
paying careful attention to how foods made me feel. Eating had always been something I did while reading, driving, walking or watch-ing TV; so, paying attention meant I needed
to slow down and let eating be my only ac-tivity. I realized my body was talking to me when I looked at a plate of food and sensed it was unappealing. When I chewed the food,
I listened for a feeling of discomfort I call the “eh” feeling. As the food moved through my digestive system, I continued to pay atten-tion. The “eh” feeling appeared as burning
on my tongue, phlegm in my throat, burning or discomfort in my stomach, indigestion, diarrhea, heartburn or gas. I began to be curious about what was causing the symp-
toms or “eh” feeling and kept notes about my experience which helped me to connect the dots to the foods that were the cause. My first observation was phlegm running down my throat each time I ate dairy-based
foods. This was an important connection for me as I had grown up on a dairy farm and consumed milk products daily. I remember disliking milk as a child but my parents re-
quired that I drink a glass before leaving the table. My body was talking to me then but I didn't know how to appropriately respond to the message. After eliminating dairy, I no
longer experienced sinus problems. As I con-tinued to pay attention to how I felt when
eating, I listened for the “eh” feeling and asked, “What is that about?” Becoming aware of these important messages from my body put me on a path that has brought
about health and happiness. The past 10 years of listening to my body has allowed me to discover my “feel good” through eat-ing mostly a plant-based diet of locally
grown organic food and grass-fed meats. We must learn to listen to our body as if it is valuable. It is valuable. Here are some simple practices that can help you listen to
your body: 1) Stay curious. 2) Listen closely through breathing. I've learned to be curious about the message behind discomfort or pain. Typi-
cally, for me, discomfort appears in my neck or back. When I am curious and ask what is behind this discomfort, I often hear, “I'm tired,” “slow down,” or “let go.” When I take the time to acknowledge that I am moving
too fast, pushing myself beyond where I am comfortable, or feeling fearful, and then I respond to these messages, the discomfort is resolved.
Paying attention to your breath can be a simple way to get in touch with the unspo-ken language of your body. Take a few deep breaths by slowly breathing in through your
nose and blowing the air out through your mouth. Ask God, your internal wisdom or
Spirit, to bring into your awareness anything that you need to know about your body. Stay curious about what your body may be
saying and trust the little messages like, “Take a walk, drink more water,” that pop into your mind or any feelings that come up in your body like, “My body feels better after
I do stretching exercises,” or “I feel ener-gized when I take a walk outside.” As you make listening a daily practice, you can stay in touch with subtle changes in
your body and hear the messages, that up until now, have been kept outside of your awareness. Is there anything your body is trying to tell you? Any medical issues that
require attention? Any feeling of discomfort that is vaguely unsettling and persistent? It may be as simple as connecting hurting feet to shoes that no longer fit well, or reschedul-
ing your day to allow for the rest your body needs, or a feeling of loneliness indicating you need to call a friend. Be curious. Listen closely to what is be-hind the messages from your body and how
you can respond to them. Your body knows what it needs to be well; and, if you will take the time to listen, you can be the recipient of the daily wisdom which will result in renewed
health and energy.

havior and create new habits that will open you up to more enjoyable experi-ences and better relationships. So you buy a few self-help books and you go to seminars. But after months (or years) of trying to improve your life, you’ve become frustrated with your lack of progress. You’re not alone. An estimated 97 percent of people are unsuccessful in permanently changing habitual behav-iors. It’s clear that the personal develop-ment path is fraught with banana peels that even the most motivated among us have slipped on. Have you lost your footing because of any of these Chiqui-tas? 1. Seeking the Promise of Instant Results The Industrial and Information Ages have proliferated gadgets, pills and books that promise instant results. Not surprisingly, you’ve fallen under the spell of expecting that the best self-help products will produce immediate re-sults. So you’ll give a personal develop-ment technique one shot, then you’ll move on to the next promise of instant results. While you can see some im-provement in one day, the life-altering, permanent improvements take time and effort. When you get antsy, it’s easy t o f a l l i n t o t h e t r a p o f … 2. Giving up too Soon You’ll bail partly due to the need for instant complete gratification, but also because you’ll blame seemingly insur-mountable obstacles as proof that you’ll never reach your desire. However, I’m now going to confirm that your most dreaded suspicion is true: by hanging in there, your fullest growth will occur, the truest wisdom will be gleaned, and the deepest desires will be fulfilled. I know, I was bummed, too, when I learned this one.
3. Fighting Your Brain’s Wiring to Avoid Change Regardless of whether you’re con-templating a tiny tweak or a massive overhaul, any step out of your comfort zone will trigger a survival mechanism that’s snuggled deep inside the base of your brain. Your cavewoman/man an-cestors had many more threats in their vicinity, so change of any kind could potentially lead to their demise. But, since your brain hasn’t caught up with your cushy, safe, modern lifestyle--it still perceives any change as a threat to your survival. You’re at the mercy of
millions of years of evolution when your thoughts lean toward… 4. Fear of the Unknown Uncertainty is the hallmark of per-sonal growth, but you’ve developed a habit of awfulizing—expecting that the worst thing is absolutely inevitable. Your heart is split between wanting something better but being unsure you can get it. So you half-heartedly try a new program. You give it one shot, but drop it at the first whiff of strife. How-ever, in your defense, few self-help pro-grams offer tools that really work for the average person. 5. Focusing on Action Instead of Drive You think that if you do more, you’ll get more. But in all of this act-act-act, you can lose sight of your motivation: why you want what you want. It’s by staying focused on why you want some-thing— the benefits of having it—that you’ll find the juice to keep pursuing it until you get it. Ultimately, sticking with your per-sonal growth until you’ve developed the qualities you aspire to and the lifestyle you desire, hinges on your ability to keep moving in the direction of what you want. The universe was created by desire. Its expansion is driven by the cumula-tive, nonstop desires of every particle within it. The nature of the universe — and everything in it — is to expand, evolve and grow. When you flow with the river of desire — not against it — the universe works with you to create what you want. If you’re not expanding, you’re fight-ing against the current of the whole universe. And it’s not pleasant. So feel for the flow. Choose thoughts that match that easy forward motion, and you’ll see those banana peels long be-fore you’d eat the linoleum.
H istorically, there is no more im-portant time than now to become a good steward for the planet. Being a good steward includes
more than just reducing your carbon foot-print by recycling; it includes being a pro-moter for the humane treatment of animals. There are several levels in which you can participate in this effort:
• Champion the humane treatment of
wildlife through organizations such as De-fenders of Wildlife or World Wildlife Fund, which work toward passing legislation to stop cruelty expeditions and help build up habitats.
• Support the humane treatment of live-
stock by buying organic/humanely farm-raised products.
• Promote the humane treatment of our
companion animals by supporting legislation that prevents and prosecutes cruelty (either through canvassing, voting and/or donat-ing), supporting local rescue organizations (through adopting, volunteering, and/or donating), and by ensuring that you are put-ting your own animal companion in the ap-propriate place on your priority list. When you make the decision to acquire a companion animal, it should be a long-term commitment (for the life of the animal). In many cases that can be up to 15-20 years, as technology and medical treatment (on par with our own) is now available for our furry family members. It is important that you promise to take care of them for their entire lives and offer them appropriate end-of-life care and transition, no different than you would for your human companions. Once you have made that commitment, your next duty is to ensure that your furry or feathered companion is incorporated into your daily life, part of your routine, someone you want to spend quality time with and share a relationship. You will not be disap-pointed. After all, it is your dog that greets you at the door with unparalleled joy no matter if you haven’t cleaned the house, if you have gained a few pounds, if you crunched the front bumper of your car…your canine partner is there for you with love and excitement. Your feline companion may take his time to wake up and stretch, but he is right there rubbing up against your leg and jumping in your lap to nuzzle up to you and purr. Even your feathered friend is excited to see you come in and chirps away with the buzz of the day. To our animal companions, “we are the world,” and we should never let them down by slighting them with less than they de-serve. For the times they must be left alone, they should have environment enrichment such as colorful and entertaining toys, a win-dow to look out, maybe a TV or radio play-ing, and a comfortable place to lay down for a nap. We should provide them a species-
appropriate diet (one without cheap fillers and chemical preservatives). And most of all we should provide them with plenty of “parent” time, including exercise. When you are selecting a companion ani-mal it is important to consider your lifestyle. You should do your homework about the species you are interested in to make sure, for example, that you understand about birds before choosing a bird (and specifically the species). You should be certain you have enough space to accommodate a large dog, or ensure that you have enough time to pro-vide exercise and appropriate play for a breed that requires “a job” such as a herding breed. When your pup is lucky enough to be chosen by you from a rescue and she is a “mix”, get to know her a little bit and see if you can figure out what characteristics she might carry (the specific breed is not as im-portant as the class of breed – i.e. herding, sporting, terrier, etc.). The class of breed will be what defines the behavior characteristics and temperament of your prize pooch. Once you get your fur-baby home, don’t fret over unwanted behaviors, as 99% of them are modifiable with a few short lessons and your patience, consistency, and commit-ment. Once you teach your dog the rules of your house, you will both live in love and harmony for many years. Our animal com-panions enrich our lives and we can repay them for that by building relationships based on respect and trust. Positive reinforcement is the road to bridging the gap. If you have chosen a senior citizen (and bless you, you will have earned your wings for that one) you can still modify a behavior, as it is an old wives tale that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks (it was even busted on Mythbusters). You can also get many miles out of a middle-aged pup by being conscien-tious with the diet and exercise. You will be doing a great service for the planet and riding on the positive frequency of the universe by elevating your steward-ship. By being good ambassadors for ani-mals, you are raising the consciousness level for humanity (like raising the bar). If we all do our part then it raises the level for all of us (like adding another person to the boat raises the water level). We all need to hop on the boat to save the planet, and we can do it one animal at a time. We may not be Noah, saving two by two; but, we will make a differ-ence with every life we touch. T he role of animals in our lives and our affec-
tions for them, have undergone dramatic
changes. Historically, animals were bred
and kept to be hunters and herders. As in-
dustry developed, there was less need for these func-
tions, and so some animals were domesticated as
indoor helpers to rid vermin, protect property or keep
other animals away. As societies prospered, animals
began to be looked upon as treasured possessions
which resulted in breeding them for things other than
functionality. As individuals and families moved fur-
ther away from agrarian-based communities to urban
dwellings, animals filled a need for companionship in
order to alleviate the isolation. Finally, as communi-
ties began returning to a more holistic view of the
world, animals began to be looked upon as extended
family members and as beings which were deserving
of basic rights.
Recognizing the particular talents of some animals,
they have now taken upon more specialized signifi-
cances apart from being our home pets. Today we
train service animals which provide assistance and
companionship to the elderly, sightless, physically
immobile, mentally disabled, hearing impaired or to
those with certain medical conditions such as seizure
disorders, Multiple Sclerosis, or Diabetes. Some ani-
mals now function as Police K-9 units, forensic or res-
cue workers, and as military patrol.
As the role of animals has changed across time, so
has our view of grieving for these beloved creatures.
With these changes in roles and our affections, animal
services have adapted to accommodate this evolu-
tion. One now finds veterinary alternative medicines,
hospice and palliative care for animals, mobile vets, in
-home care or euthanasia, pet cemeteries and crema-
tories, pet funeral services, holistic practices of energy
healing for animals, pet loss support groups and grief
counseling, online pet memorial websites and chat
rooms for the bereaved.
The role of the animal and depth of the bond be-
tween an animal and its owner, affect the depth and
manner of grief that may be experienced. For most
people, animals continue to be viewed as property;
and, their owners have limited affection for them,
providing only physical care of the animal. For others,
animals are a source of entertainment or pleasure.
These owners express affection for the animal, and
their self-worth is enhanced through the animal’s
obedience and devotion. Still for others, animals are
looked upon as children or members of the family, as
having personalities and human-like qualities, as be-
ing soul mates or having other spiritual connected-
ness. For these individuals, there is a heightened
sense of responsibility and commitment to the animal
and with it, more intense feelings of grief associated
with the loss of these beings.
We may think that only animal owners grieve the
loss of a beloved animal. This loss affects different
groups for different reasons, and grieving may be ex-
perienced differently because of the varied emotional
attachments. Children may look upon the family pet
as a playmate or sibling. The emotionally or physically
disabled come to rely upon an animal companion to
alleviate certain deficiencies and handicaps. Animal
rescue workers, animal adoption personnel and vet-
erinary care staff find themselves becoming attached
to those vulnerable beings that are, at times, abused
or unwanted. Police officers and military personnel
entrust their very lives to those animals with special-
ized training for service and protection. Groomers, pet
shop employees, or other animal service providers
may become emotionally attached to the animal be-
cause of their trusted roles in the care of these be-
loved pets.
When we think of losing a cherished animal, we
typically envision the loss as death through illness,
accident or disease. There are however, other reasons
why one may lose a beloved animal and this also af-
fects the depth and manner of grieving. At times, one
may be faced with the difficult decision to let the ani-
mal go because of its suffering or pain. One may have
to surrender the animal to others because of its un-
controlled behaviors or the owner’s inability to ade-
quately provide care for the animal. Custody or con-
tact with the animal may be lost through a separation
or divorce. The animal may go missing or perhaps be
stolen. Natural disaster or personal tragedy may
abruptly remove them from our lives.
The grief experienced over the loss of a beloved
animal is individualized and does not always follow
logical paths. There are no cook-book approaches to
managing this type of grief, no time tables or how-to
guides. Many who experience grief over the loss of a
beloved animal do so quietly, behind closed doors
believing that others will not understand. Many peo-
ple feel embarrassed by their feelings because they
are “just animals” to most. Grief is experienced be-
cause of the integral role the animal played in the
owner’s life. The greater the role, the more intense
grieving can be felt. Whether for humans or for ani-
mals, grieving is nonetheless an expression of love
and devotion.
As the role of animals and our affections for them
have evolved over time, so has our recognition that
grieving for an animal is a valid expression of feelings
and an appropriate response to the loss. If we believe
that all life is connected and that all creatures, great
or small, have dignity and worth, then these animals
are deserving of our love and our tears. Understand-
ing and support are necessary for healing and accep-
tance of the loss in societies which are only beginning
to recognize the legitimacy of this reason for grief.

Grieving for our Animal Friends

T hink of diseases like trees. It sounds funny at first; but, it is a metaphor that I learned to use when studying Traditional Chinese Medicine. If you take any medical problem, this meta-
phor can apply. Looking at things this way will allow you to think about the issue a little deeper than you would have otherwise and will pose the question, “Is this medi-cine or treatment going to fix the problem or just mask the signs and symptoms?” Think about this the next time you take your pet to the veterinarian. What are they doing that is going to get to the root of the problem? Back to the tree for a moment. Diseases are not spontaneous, random occurrences that just appear out of the sky. There is a cause and effect relationship amongst all of the factors that cause a disease. There is a root cause for every problem that sends you out to the veteri-narian’s office. This could be a genetic factor, toxin, parasite, bacteria, injury or any other number of things. This starts the chain of events and as that root cause grows, you start to see changes and manifestations as the body responds. The longer it continues or the stronger and more resistant the disease, the more of this "tree" you will see…more manifestations…more branches and leaves. Let’s look at two examples of things commonly seen in a veterinarian’s office, diarrhea and allergies. First the diarrhea, the thing that sends you speeding to the vet’s office immediately! Most of the time this is a straight forward thing that has a direct relationship; i.e. your pet comes into contact with a parasite which then starts to cause inflammation, pain, toxins and such, that accumu-late until the body cannot compensate and then…diarrhea. You have a fecal sample checked, the parasite is identified and the appropriate medication is prescribed and voila — better in two days. This has identified the root and branches and the problem resolves with treat-ment. Let’s be a bit more specific on the second example of a six-year-old yellow Lab with allergies that occur year round but flare up every year in the spring and summer. These started at two years old, but have been getting worse each year and there are repeat visits to the vet’s office for ear infections, skin infections, itching and oc-casional vomiting. There are many manifestations here with the itching, stomach upset and infections; but, the root cause is not so easy to identify. Think of all the things that happen to a dog by the time they are six years old…lots of stuff; but, how many of these things are factors to the allergies and secondary problems? The root cause here would likely involve multiple things such as a genetic tendency towards allergic problems, an inap-propriate diet with lots of grains, fillers and low quality ingredients, multiple vaccinations, toxins from the envi-ronment such as pesticides or herbicides and multiple other things. Here, there are many things that should be addressed to help this animal. If the owners and veteri-narians are treating each episode of ear infection or skin
infection (hot spots) or itching separately with antibiotics or steroids, then only the branches and leaves are being addressed and the problems will continue to recur over and over. What else can be done to minimize all of the manifestations? This is where you have to discuss things with your veterinarian. Are you feeding the ingredients (not the brand name) that your dog would choose and needs? Look at the label on the food and read the actual ingredients. If your dog was out in the country, would it go out to the corn or soybean field and start munching away or would it be chasing that bird, rabbit or squirrel? That’s what I thought! How often is she vaccinated and how many at a time? Does she need all of those or would it be adequate to check antibody titers to see how high the levels are before introducing something else into the body that changes the immune system? Remem-ber that allergies are related to/dealing with the immune system, the same as giving a vaccine or fighting off an infection. How is that vaccine going to change the im-mune system and is it going to set off the allergic symp-toms again? Are there alternative products to pesticides or can you decrease the frequency of application of those products? Are there supplements, herbs or medica-tions to help modulate the immune system? Have you thought about allergy testing and desensitization injec-tions? These are the types of things to ask your veteri-narian. Think about the root of the problem and the end goals of the treatment. Does it symptomatically treat the problem or does it treat the underlying cause of the problem? This same metaphor can be applied to any medical
problem whether it is an ear infection, respiratory infec-tion, limping, cancer or anything else. Remember that medicine is the science and art of healing — things that are intended to prevent or cure disease. It doesn’t matter if the healing comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine, homeopathy, chiropractic manipulation, nutrition and supplements, pharmaceuticals or surgery as long as it works. You have to find the balance between slower acting natural treatments to address the core/root of the issue and quicker acting pharmaceuticals that provide symptomatic relief. The answers and options are out there and certainly no single veterinarian has them all; so do some research, and find out if your veterinarian is treating the branches and leaves — or the roots.

I have been deeply and profoundly touched by the book, Dying to Be Me, and even more so by my personal relationship with the author, Anita
Moorjani, who came into my life through a series of Divinely orchestrated coincidences. For more than four years, an advancing cancer brought Anita to death’s doorstep and beyond — inside the house of death itself, way beyond the doorway and the entrance hall, if you will. Anita has de-scribed it all in great detail in her soul-searching book. I encourage you to read it very carefully and thoughtfully with a mind that’s open to having many of your cher-ished beliefs challenged, especially about what lies beyond this world, in what’s often called the hereafter.
Surrounded by loved ones and a medi-cal team anticipating her last breath at any moment, Anita lay in a deep coma. Yet she was given the opportunity to return to her cancer-ravaged body, defying all odds, and experience incredible healing — through the vehicle of unconditional love. More than this, she was allowed to return from the chamber of death and report to all of us what life on the other side of this corporeal world looks like — and of even more signifi-cance, feels like.
This is a love story — a big, uncondi-tional love story that will give you a re-newed sense of who you truly are, why you’re here, and how you can transcend any fear and self-rejection that defines your life. Anita speaks with uncommon candor about her cancer, explaining why she believes she had to go down this treacherous road in her life, why she feels she was healed, and why she returned.
What Anita discovered during when she passed through the doorway into the other realm is remarkably aligned with all that I’ve been receiving in inspired mo-ments of writing and speaking. It’s clear to both of us that Divine intervention took over and moved the pieces around in such a way that this woman living on the other side of the world, in a culture quite dissimilar from my own, was escorted into my aware-ness and my physical life.
Through a series of wonderful synchro-nicities—Anita called from Hong Kong into my weekly radio show on hayhousera-dio.com, giving me the chance to interview her for the entire planet to hear. I am happy to again, be able to share her story with you now. Dr. Wayne Dyer: I just love you and what you talk about in your near death experience. You had 36 hours to live and were told you had lym-phoma all throughout your body. Then you had a near death experi-ence. Can you talk a little bit about what happened? Anita: Well, I had cancer; I had lymphoma,
which spread, throughout my body. It spread from the base of my skull all over the lymph nodes, all over my neck and my body, under my arms, everywhere, all the way down to my abdomen – everything was swollen. In fact, I had tumors, I was told, the size of lemons all through my body. I had cancer for about 3 years and 8 months. It seemed to go up and down in between because I was practicing Ayurveda; it would get better, but then it would come back. Dr. Wayne Dyer: At what point did your condition take a turn for the worse? Anita: By February 2, 2006, I was on oxy-gen and a full-time nurse was caring for me at home. By that point my muscles had already deteriorated. I was confined to a wheel chair and I had open skin lesions. On the morning of February the 2, 2006, I went into a coma. Dr. Wayne Dyer: And then you died. I mean, you essentially went into what we call a Near Death Experience (NDE). But your body just shut down, and while you were in the coma, you were hearing things and seeing things. Tell us about this. Anita: Yes, I could hear and see everything that was going on around me. The doctors had told my family that my organs had al-ready shut down, and basically, I had died. They said my heart was still beating, but I had died, there was nobody in there. But I was aware of everything that was going on around me, everything that the doctors were saying, and everything that they were doing, the needles that they were poking into me. They were telling my husband that I had fluid in my lungs, and they said that, even though I was in a coma, my breathing was quite labored and I was on oxygen. The doctor even stuck a needle into my back to remove some fluid. I remember every single thing. I became aware of things beyond my body. I was aware of my brother getting on a plane in a different country, who was just coming to see me. I started to become aware of my father, who had passed away 10 years before that. I was aware that he was around me. My best friend, who I’d lost to cancer, she was there. And I could sense that they had been around me the whole time while I was ill. Then I started to understand why I had the cancer. I started to understand that it wasn’t my time, and I had a choice of whether I wanted to come back into my body or to continue into death. At first, I didn’t want to come back into my body, because my body was just so sick. And, and it was so amazing on the other side! It was… there are no words to describe it …and I … and I still get a bit tearful when I think about it because there’s just no words to
describe it. It’s like this unconditional love and this… you feel this clarity, like you know why you’re here, what your purpose is, why you’ve come into this planet; that’s how I felt. I felt like I just understood every-thing: my purpose for this life, why I’d got-ten the cancer. And then I seemed to know that if I chose to go back to my body, now that I understood life’s purpose, then I wouldn’t have the cancer anymore. If I chose to go back to live, the cancer wouldn’t be there in my body because now I under-stood why I even had the cancer. Dr. Wayne Dyer: You’ve said that when you came back, the great lesson that you learned from this experience was to treasure your own magnificence and to realize that you are pure love. Did you feel that when you could hear the doctors talking and saying that you weren’t going to survive this? You felt love for them, rather than disdain or worry or anger? Anita: Yes, I felt love for everyone, every single doctor, everybody. Somehow, it was like I became them, like I understood what they were all doing. It’s not even a feeling, it’s like I became one with them and I could feel what they were feeling. They felt they had to do something, and they were doing what they knew best and their intention was good. It’s like suddenly you can feel every-body’s intention — not what they’re actually doing, not the end result — but their inten-tion. I could feel what everyone was feeling, every nurse that came in, everything! When I came out of it, everything just looked so beautiful. It was like I was viewing the world and viewing everyone for the first time. Dr. Wayne Dyer: How long were you in the coma? How long were you in that NDE? Anita: About 20 hours. It was over night. I went into the hospital the morning of Feb-ruary 2nd, and started to come out of it the next morning on February the 3rd. Dr. Wayne Dyer: And you had been told, I mean your husband had been told, that you had maybe another day or so at the most, is that correct? Anita: At the most, yes. The doctors said that I wouldn’t even make it through the night because my organs had shut down and I was in the final stages (of death). It’s written in my medical file that they had informed the family it was the end. Dr. Wayne Dyer: So there were literally billions and billions of cancer cells in your body and it was shutting down. Then you came back. Tell us what happened after that, and what’s going on now? Why are you talking to us? Why are you alive? Anita: Well, when I came back I was euphoric because I had this…this awaken-ing. For the first couple of days I was a bit groggy. I was getting things confused. I was talking and everyone was really surprised that I even woke up. A doctor came in to see me, but it was an oncologist that I’d never seen before. My own doctor hadn’t come in
yet; the doctor that came in was the one at the hospital when I entered in a coma. When he walked in, I said to him, “Good morning, Dr. Chan.” And he said to me, “How do you know my name?” I said, “Aren’t you the one who was here when I entered the hospital?” He said, “Yes, but you’d been in a coma.” I replied, “Are you sure?” I didn’t even realize that I’d been in a coma since I was so aware of everything going on around me. I said to the doctor, “But you were the one that put the needle in my back and took the fluid out of my lungs.” And he said, “You remember all that?” He was visibly very, very surprised. He was also shocked that I had come out of the coma. I was still weak and lying down. When he left the room I said to my family, “Why was he so surprised? He’s the one who said to that these were my last hours; that I wasn’t going to make it through the night. Isn’t he the one that said that?” And my husband said, “How did you even hear that? He did-n’t say that in front of you. He said it out-side the room way down the corridor.” I said, “Really?” Then it all started to come out slowly. I was still very, very weak, but in about 48 hours or so they were removing the oxy-gen and then started taking out the feeding tube. I wanted to sit up. I was feeling really euphoric. It’s hard to describe the feeling; it’s deeper than just loving everything, it’s realizing that you are love. For me, that was a new realization. I’d never known that before. I used to think that I had to learn to love toward other people and I would al-ways judge myself, “Am I loving enough? Am I not loving enough?” From that experi-ence, I realized that I am love. Dr. Wayne Dyer: Where are you today? Is your body cancer free? Anita: Yes it is; it’s completely cancer free. Dr. Wayne Dyer: You’ve said you re-turned from the other side with clar-ity about why you even got cancer. What is the answer? Why did you get cancer? Anita: I can tell you in one word: FEAR. Fear of being MYSELF, fear of displeasing others, fear of not measuring up to expecta-tions, fear of living, fear of dying, fear of eating processed foods, fear of the environ-ment, fear of breathing, in fact, a fear of EVERYTHING. Only when I realized my own magnificence, my own perfection, my own self worth as a beautiful child of the universe, was I able to let go of fear and embrace life with all its uncertainties, ambi-guities, joys, sorrows, and challenges. See-ing myself as perfection, as an exquisite manifestation of life, led to my healing. I invite others now to embrace the perfection of who and what you truly are ...and to live a joyful life fearlessly with abandon.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20) Wow! Neptune (your own planet!) is moving into your sign this month for a 14-year visit. This means you’ll be developing more intuition, self-love and clarity about your spiritual purpose. Be sure to work on strengthening boundaries so that you’re not taken advantage of. It’s not cruel to discern that certain people de-serve more of your energy than others. Don’t let your light be wasted on those who don’t really want it or can’t use it! Aries (March 21 – April 19) Please evaluate relationships this month. Are you addicted to prob-lematic people? Maybe you need to learn to manage your anger – or set limits with other people’s anger. Meditate on all close con-nections you’ve had over your life-time. Ask for guidance to see the roots of negative patterns. You need to be with people who see you as an equal so power issues are avoided. You’ll get guidance in dreams, so keep a notepad by your bed. Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Are you meeting your spiritual goals? It’s important to get clear on what those goals are and ex-actly how you can meet them. You might need to be more careful how you spend your time. Culti-vate connections with those on a spiritual path. Beware of people who just “talk” and don’t “walk.” Also, be disciplined about eating
and exercise habits. Don’t go one more day filling your body with junk and then sitting around. Treat your body with kindness and respect! Gemini (May 21 – June 20) It’s important to release and for-give the past, especially about re-lationships! Meditating and jour-naling will help to clean out your heart. After you’re “spiritually scrubbed out,” move forward with visualizing new relationships. Let your dreams flourish, because you’re ready to manifest and re-ceive. You could also create and attract a new job that really show-cases your talents. Try not to merely talk about your ideas with others, but spend time going qui-etly within and really envisioning the future you want to live in! Cancer (June 21 – July 22) The planet Neptune is helping you open to deeper levels of spiritual growth. You’re very attached to your family and your past – so try to not be nervous about going on a new path that is different from your origins. You’re not betraying anyone – you are expanding; and, your loved ones will benefit from your expansion. No need to tell everyone what you’re doing; just follow your heart quietly and let results speak for themselves. Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22) Focus on trusting your intuition. Meditate each day, even for a few minutes, to establish your spiri-
tual connection. Try out your guidance with small things to gain confidence. Also work to release self-criticism so answers flow more easily. Take the attitude of playing in your spiritual practices. Whether its meditation, yoga or reading books, have fun and enjoy this internal exploration! Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22) It’s important to meditate and see yourself and others clearly. You tend to be overly critical of your-self, but don’t have healthy boundaries in relationships. Jour-nal about your strong points. Ask friends to read the list to make additions. You’re pretty awesome, huh?! Next, be sure you don’t have illusions about others. If you know what you find unacceptable, you can raise the quality of rela-tionships in a loving, yet firm way. Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22) This is a time to heal body image issues. Meditate on the beautiful aspects of your body, as well as its many examples of health! Make it a point to toss all negative thoughts out of your brain the moment they arise! If changes need to come, you’ll be guided in a loving way through your inner spiritual connection, rather than by picking on yourself. You’ll be able to eat well and have a loving exercise routine that is fun, not punishing. Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21) You have opportunities to begin amazing relationships. But do you know what could hold them back? Resentments and fears from the past. Meditate and forgive your-self, and others, for love gone awry. If you look at things from a karmic perspective, all your rela-tionships were successful. You each played out the pattern your souls agreed to play out. Inner reflection and forgiveness will heal those patterns so you draw happier karmic circumstances!
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21) It sounds cliché, but your roman-tic relationships will be much more successful and harmonious if you forgive your family of ori-gin. You have such a great oppor-tunity to have your heart opened in a deep way if you can do that inner work. Also, be sure that your house is de-cluttered and that you have a little sacred area. You’ve got to be ever-watchful of creating chaos! It’s so vital to your spiritual growth to have a section of your home devoted to tranquil-ity for your meditation.
Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 19) Hang in there if you’re having work issues. Take time in your meditation to visualize difficult people at work. Imagine that you’re talking with their soul, rather than their “lower” person-ality. Be able to ask for healing, cooperation and compassion. Imagine working out a solution together. It can help to also see a comforting deity or spiritual fig-ure with you as a kind presence. These “4th dimensional meetings” will have a powerful impact on your 3rd dimensional circum-stances!
