Ash WednesdayFebruary 17 is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. The purpose of this holy season is to prepare us, through penance and conversion, to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ at Easter. Masses on Ash Wednesday will be at 9:00 a.m., 12:00 N, and 6:00 p.m. On Ash Wednesday, Catholics ages 14 and above are required to abstain from eating meat (Code of Canon Law, canons 1251–1252). Animal flesh is not consumed out of respect for Christ’s flesh, which was crucified for our salvation. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are required to fast from the normal amount of food (canons 1252–1253; U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Complementary Norm to canon 1253 [1983]). When fasting, a per-son is permitted to eat one full meal; two smaller meals may also be taken,

but should not equal a full meal.

“What You Did For Me”: A Holy Hour for the Corporal Works of MercyThursday, February 25 | 6:00 p.m. | In-person and Livestream“‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink?’ … ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least broth-ers of mine, you did for me’” (Matt 25:37, 40). A holy hour for the Corporal Works of Mercy will take place on Thursday, February 25 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. This event will include Eucharistic Exposi-tion and Benediction, biblical readings, sacred music, and a homily. Did you know? Our High School Youth Group meets together with St. Elizabeth and Holy Rosary Churches on Sundays at 7:00 p.m. for weekly catechesis. It is a great group of teens, and meetings include fun games, discussions, prayer, and catechesis. During the upcoming weeks, we are doing a series from Life Teen called At the Table, which addresses racism. If your 9–12th grade student would like to join our High School Youth Group, please contact Joy Weir at jweir@richmondcathedral.org.

The Eucharist and the Poor “The Eucharist commits us to the poor. To receive in truth the Body and Blood of Christ given up for us, we must recognize Christ in the poorest, his brethren: ‘You have tasted the Blood of the Lord, yet you do not recognize your brother, …You dishonor this table when you do not judge worthy of sharing your food someone judged worthy to take part in this meal. …God freed you from all your sins and invited you here, but you have not become more merciful’ [St. John Chrysostom]” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no.

1397).

Corporal Works of MercyFor the month of February, our Cathedral community will be learning and practicing corporal works of mercy. Several of these works are wonderful opportunities for families to do together from home. Feed the hungry: Make welcome snack bags for Housing Families First, a ministry that provides families experiencing homelessness with the tools to achieve housing stability. Have your child include positive notes or pictures with the snack bags.

We strive to inspire the Christian faithful through the witness of the Catholic candidates for sainthood. We will celebrate how the triumphed over tragedies and how we can do the same. Ave Regina CaelorumFollowing the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas) on February 2, the Church sings a different Antiphon in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Rather than the Alma Redemptoris Mater (Loving Mother of the Redeemer), the Ave Regina Caelorum (Hail, Queen of Heaven) is chanted. The Ave Regina Caelorum is used from February 3, through Lent, until the Easter Vigil. For parishioners who would like to recite the antiphon as a devotion, the following translation may be used: Hail, Queen of heaven, hail Lady of the angels. Hail, root and gate from which the Light of the world was born. Rejoice, glorious Virgin, fairest of all. Fair the well, most beautiful, and pray to Christ for us.

Maintenance Technician Needed:

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is looking for a full-time (40 hours/week) maintenance worker. Duties include cleaning and sanitizing the church and office area, assisting the Director of Facilities and staff members as needed, and per-forming scheduled preventative maintenance and general repairs when needed. Physical requirements include the ability to lift 50 lbs., the ability to work flexible hours, to walk extensively throughout the workday, and to climb ladders and navigate heights such as the roof areas. This position requires a successful clearance by Social Services, criminal background check, and certificate of VIRTUS training, all of which are provided through the parish. Salary is based on diocesan scale and demonstrated experi-ence in the maintenance field. Interested candidates should send a cover letter and resume to tba-

Collecting PalmsPalms that were blessed last year on Palm Sunday are now being collected in preparation for the beginning of Lent. After the palms are burnt, the ashes imposed on the forehead on Ash Wednesday (February 17). Please deposit the palms in the baskets that have been placed at the entrance to the church. The connection between Palm Sunday and Ash Wednesday high-lights an important truth: We undertake penance knowing that Christ has already conquered sin by his Passion, Death, and Resurrection. The Lord’s victory is meant to be ours as well. The palm is a symbol of Christ’s victory, as we read in the Book of Revelation: “After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the throne,

and from the Lamb’” (7:9–10).

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)During this week those in RCIA will have a discernment talk with an RCIA Team member. What does this mean? Christian discernment in RCIA is an awareness of the movement of the Holy Spirit and the signs of the Spirit in a person’s life. When a person is discerning their relationship with God it requires attentive listening and observation during a time of conversion. During the RCIA process, candidates and catechumens are given the opportunity to dialogue with our Rector, team members and director. What can our parish do to help? We ask the entire parish community to pray that we all live in harmony with God.
