Our Mission:Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place.

Dear Friends,

“Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner.” As I was asking the Holy Spirit for help as I began writing this bulletin article, this was the phrase that immediately came into my head – more commonly known as “The Jesus Prayer.” This prayer was commonly said by monks, all day long, and is said to have originated in the 6th century with Diadochos, who taught that repetition of prayer leads to inner stillness. Often this prayer goes through my head many times throughout the day, as well as a prayer commonly recognized on Divine Mercy Sunday – “Jesus, I trust in you.” I don’t think this is a coincidence, as I feel that God has imprinted these words into my heart as a reminder that I am in need of His mercy, and that I can, and should, place my

faith and trust in Him to strengthen my friendship with Him at all times.

It is so important, especially during the season of Lent and during this Year of Mercy in the Church year, to be aware of our need for God’s mercy. We all need it—even the most holy and virtuous souls are at some point in needs of God’s mercy. During Lent I like to think of how I’ve been living my life up to this point-what types of choices have I made? How do I treat and talk about others? Are there any relationships in my life that I could work harder at or that need mending? Am I holding on to any anger or bad feelings that I could be letting go of? If so, Lent is a great time to work on those things. Through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, with God’s help, we can become stronger and better able to do the things that God asks us to do. Over time it can become very easy for us to become complacent in how generous we are with our time, talent, and treasure, or to become just too busy for the important things in life like time with family and loved ones. Now is the perfect time to let go of any grudges, anger, or bad feelings, to think about how we can share our gifts with others, and above all to determine the ways in which we can serve God the way we were meant to – in all facets of our lives.

This week’s psalm is a great reminder to us of how gracious and merciful God is, and of his unwavering readiness to forgive us and come closer to us as long as our hearts are open to it.

He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your ills, He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion. The Lord is kind and merciful.

To me, these words are so incredibly comforting. God gives us a wonderful gift during Lent. He gives us the chance to closely examine our lives, ask for mercy, come closer to Him, and to ultimately become happier people. I encourage you all, as I plan to do, to give yourselves the chance this Lenten season to take a deep breath, slow down, and ask God for help in any parts of your life you feel need some strengthening. As you go through this season of Lent—try to do something nice for another person, ask for forgiveness where it is appropriate, and put your faith and trust in God. Above all, have hope and faith that at the end of these 40 days, you will feel refreshed, renewed, and closer to God than ever before. That is my hope as I continue this Lenten journey, and it is my prayer for all of you as well. God bless you all, and may this be your best Lent ever! “Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner.” “Jesus, I trust in you.”

A YEAR OF MERCYTEACH THOSE WHO LACK KNOWLEDGE

No matter what our intellectual gifts are—great or perhaps not so great—we are all learners. We are all disciples, and the word itself means “learners.” In mercy and with generosity, we help others learn when we teach and advise them. “Whoever does [these commandments] and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:19)

The Right to Work By Jennifer Cortez

Peace & Justice, Paz y Justicia Commission Staff Liaison

Working people in America have certain basic legal rights to safe, healthy and fair conditions at work. But many employers violate these fundamental rights because they value their profits more than their workers.

Arise Chicago partners with immigrants and leaders from the religious, government, legal, labor, and academic communities to end workplace abuse. As part of their work, Arise Chicago works with religious congregations from across the area to protect workers from wage theft, discrimination, denied benefits and retaliation.

These congregations — including ours — can support the work of Arise Chicago in a variety of ways, including: meeting and praying with workers; accompanying us on delegations to employers; hosting trainings or events for workers; inviting Arise and workers to speak; making financial contributions to Arise; advocating for workers within their denomination; highlighting worker issues in sermons on an ongoing basis; walking a picket line; and other actions.

Solidarity Action: Join us at Soup with Substance - Friday, March 4th - as Luke Sullivan and Arise Chicago speak on worker’s rights and how we can help.

Please join the SJB Parish Life committee on

Saturday, March 19th ~ after the 5pm Massin the church basement for our annual

Saint Joseph’s TablePlease join us to celebrate the foster father of our Lord. Tickets are available at the door. This is an event for all from the young to the not-so-young, so bring the family!

PLEASE HELPEvery 30 seconds someone counts on Catholic Charities for help. We are now

asking for your help. Please lend your voice to advocate for the State of Illinois to end its budget stalemate and pass a budget that cares for the poor and most vulnerable in our communities. Catholic Charities is currently owed more than $25 million by the State of Illinois – a number that grows by at least $2 million per month. Please take time today to call your state elected officials with this simple message, “I am a voter in your district. I am contacting you on behalf of the poor and vulnerable people who depend on our state’s safety net of human services, especially the more than 1 million people served by Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago.” If you do not know who your state representative and senator are, please call the State Board of Elections at (217) 782-4141 or visit www.elections.il.gov and click on “New District/ Official Search.” You can find more information and a template advocacy letter at www.CatholicCharities.net on the homepage.

Next week we will take up the Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. This collection supports Catholic

organizations that provide affordable shelter and train seminarians in a region that still struggles from the effects of Soviet rule. By provid-

ing pastoral care, catechesis, and funding for building renovations, your donations help to restore the Church and build the future in the

region. Please give generously to the collection next week.

RCIA SpotlightDavid MuñozDavid Muñoz was baptized in the Catholic church as a child, but never completed the sacraments of

Eucharist and Confirmation. Although he lives in the St. John Berchmans neighborhood he only recently began to think about what had been missing in his Catholic education.

“I’ve known about SJB for many years,” he said, “But I drifted from the church until my fiancé brought me back.” The person who has encouraged him and accompanies him to every class is his fiancé, Yari Vazquez. The two plan to be married in August.

“Ever since I joined the RCIA class I have felt a peace in my heart,” David said. “I truly enjoy the class.” He reported that one of his favorite parts of the RCIA process this year has been Fr. Paul’s historical perspective on the topics being covered.

David, an electrician, enjoys riding his motorcycle and spending time with the family. His favorite film is “The Notebook.”

The Scrutinies Today at the 6:30pm Mass we are celebrating the “First Scrutiny” for those in our catechumenal process who are preparing for their initiation at the Easter Vigil. Next Saturday, March 5th at the 5pm Mass, we will celebrate the “Second Scrutiny” and on March 13th at the 8:15am Mass we will celebrate the “Third Scrutiny.”

The Scrutinies are among the most ancient prayers in the Christian Liturgical tradition. Today we understand that our prayers for protection from evil are not limited to those formally engaged in catechumenal process. Just as our entire community is called to journey with the catechumens throughout the Lenten season, we recognize the need we all share for freedom from evil and its effects.

We encourage you to prepare for the celebration of the scrutinies in a personal way by discerning what it is in your own life that needs to be freed from sin’s bondage. Join in spirit with all in our community who turns to Jesus for freedom from sin and protection from all evil.

All are Welcome at St. John Berchmans! If you are new to our church or just visiting, please stop and introduce yourself. We are happy to have you share in today’s celebration of the Eucharist. If you do not have a church home, we invite you to become a part of our parish family.
