Our Mission:Rooted in Christ, touched by His love and mercy, the Saint John Berchmans community finds unity in its diversity, proclaims by Word, Sacrament, and service, that the Kingdom of God is at hand, and declares that all are welcome in this place.

Dear Friends,

It’s hard to believe that when you come to church next week, we will be beginning Holy Week. Have you taken any time this season to reflect on God’s mercy? Have you availed yourself to the Sacrament of Reconciliation? Have you shared in the joy of engaging in the spiritual and corporal works of mercy? There still is time.

During the course of the past week, Pope Francis and members of the Roman Curia went on retreat. Historically popes have taken time during the Lenten season to reflect on the love and mercy of God and the mystery of the season. The popes lead by example. Pope Francis and his colleagues spent this week reflecting on some questions that the Scriptures pose. I share them below. Perhaps you can reflect on them as individuals, couples or families. What do the questions stir in your hearts? What meaning can you get from the questions posed?

1. “What are you looking for?” (John 1:38)2. “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” (Mark 4:40)3. “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless,

how can it be made salty again?” (Matthew 5:13)4. “But who do you say that I am?” (Luke 9:20)5. “Then, turning to the woman, he told Simon, ‘Do you see this

woman?’” (Luke 7:44)6. “How many loaves do you have?” (Mark 6:38, Matthew 15:34)7. “Straightening up, Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, where are they? Did

no one condemn you?’” (John 8:10)8. “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” (John

20:15)9. “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” (John 21:16)10. “Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be?’” (Luke 1:34).

Another thing that happened since I last wrote to you was the brutal murder – martyrdom – of four sisters of Charity and twelve other people in a brutal attack by militant extremists in Yemen. A Salesian priest was also kidnapped and his whereabouts are still unknown. This attack has been haunting me and has remained in the forefront of my prayers. On Tuesday,

the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops decried the violence and issued a statement on the “Martyrs of Charity.”

Caring for the aging and dying is an act of love and mercy. Giving totally of oneself to serve the most vulnerable of our brothers and sisters is an act of courageous faith. Thus, it is always a great sorrow when such acts of mercy lead to martyrdom. On March 4, four sisters from the Missionaries of Charity, along with 12 people for whom they cared, were murdered in Yemen. Acknowledging they “gave their blood for the Church,” Pope Francis described these sisters as “martyrs of charity.”

In the words of the Holy Father, they were “victims not only of those who have murdered them, but also of the globalization of indifference.” As the Administrative Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops convenes this week in Washington, DC, we pause to make our own the words and prayer of Pope Francis. We invite the faithful and all people of good will to join in solidarity with people of faith – all faiths – who see their lives threatened by evil, indifference, hatred, and terrorism.

We renew our call for an increased international response. Addressing the full body of bishops in November, USCCB President Archbishop Joseph Kurtz described the atrocities faced by Christians in the Middle East as “nothing short of genocide.” The United States Department of State is considering an official finding of probable cause that genocide is occurring against Christians, Yazidis and other religious minorities. It would be an important step toward a declaration of genocide. That declaration would be a life-saving aid in the defense of those facing the extremists’ violence. The Christian community along with others is working to help gather the necessary evidence to urge State Department action.

Wherever people of good will, of any faith, face death because they reject violence and extremism, we must be their witness. We give particular thanks to God for the “martyrs of charity.” Through their sacrifice, they were transformed into signs of Christ’s victory over sin, violence and death.

I agree wholeheartedly with the bishops and I invite you to join me in praying for peace and mercy this Lent, in our world and in our city – and of course for the eternal rest of those martyred for their faith.

Peace,

Charity

A YEAR OF MERCYBEAR PATIENTLY THOSE

WHO DO US ILLWe witness the mercy of God when we are patient with others, especially those who cause us difficulties. In his mercy, God is patient. He waits patiently, just as the father of the prodigal son waited patiently for his own flesh and blood who had wronged him. As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other. (Colossians 3:12–13)

The Corporal Works of Mercy in Action: I have witness many acts of Mercy this Lent by our great parish. So many I cannot keep up! I know we will reach our goal of 2,016. Let me tell you just two stories that come to my mind today. Visit the sick. We often forget the sick especially when they are old, I guess because they can be crabby, or too frail to talk, or a too needy. As we are running around from place to place, we do not find the time. Often these people are our elders. They deserve our Mercy, our love. The other day I heard a great story of a young man jumping at the opportunity to visit his elderly sick friend. After the sick woman had fallen and she had to remained in the hospital for several days before departing for her new home. The young man, Jack was notified that his friend was in the hospital. He dropped everything, immediately, to head to the hospital to visit her. He took the time to visit her before her departure. During his encounter, he was able to tell her good bye and show her his love. We sometimes forget that time and busyness should not stop us from visiting the sick, loving, and living the corporal works of Mercy day to day. Love wins when we take the time from our packed schedules to really be present with someone who is sick. Love!

I was on the train and a man got up from his chair for a woman, who looked maybe homeless and a little raggedy, so she could sit down. He was a well-dressed man with a nice brief case and an iPhone hooked up to head phones. The woman thanked him with hand gestures and it appeared as though she could not speak. They began having a conversation without talking aloud. They used their hands. He offered her an apple and she accepted it with great joy! They continued to converse in this special way. Again, I could see the love as I watched. At one point, she took out a piece of paper from her bag and wrote; “Thank you, you made my day. I cannot repay you.” You could physically see the man’s body become overwhelmed almost uncomfortable, feeling unworthy or something. I was grateful to see humanity is still alive and well. He reminded me that it is as easy as giving away your apple to make someone’s day. As simple as getting up for someone else to sit, as simple as a smile. Sometimes it is uncomfortable but when we feed the hungry, we feed the hearts of humanity. As we continue our works of mercy, this Lent let us not forget that above all Jesus calls us to Love. When we live with love, the works of mercy happen naturally. Thank you for all your acts of Mercy, they are inspiring!

Solidarity Action: The parish is gathering toiletries for the poor, a simple way for us all to get involved with the corporal works of Mercy; give alms. Bring some toiletries to the Soup with substance on March 18, 2016.

Queridos Amigos,

1. “¿Qué estás buscando?” (Juan 1:38)2. “¿Por qué tienen tanto miedo? ¿Todavía no tienen fe? “(Marcos 4:40)3.

“(Juan 8:10)

8. “Mujer, ¿por qué lloras? ¿A quién buscas? “(Juan 20:15)9. “Simón, hijo de Jonás , ¿me amas?” (Juan 21:16)10.

Paz,

Caridad

UN AÑO DE MISERICORDIASOPORTAR CON PACIENCIA LOS DEFECTOS DE LOS DEMÁS

Damos testimonio de la misericordia de Dios cuando somos pacientes con los demás, especialmente con aquellos que nos ocasionan dificultades. Dios es paciente en su misericordia. Él espera con paciencia como el padre del hijo pródigo esperó pacientemente a quien era carne de su carne y sangre de su sangre, a quien lo había ofendido. Por tanto, como elegidos de Dios, consagrados y amados, revístanse de sentimientos de profunda compasión, de amabilidad, de humildad, de mansedumbre, de paciencia; sopórtense mutuamente;

Yo no puedo recompensarte.

RCIA SpotlightEmily Rose Merriman

One of the first things Emily Rose Merriman did when she moved to Chicago in the fall of 2015 was come to St. John Berchmans’ parish and register for the RCIA program. “My

marriage and wanting to raise my children Catholic encouraged me to join the RCIA,” she said.

She came from Cleveland in October to be with her husband, Michael. They have two daughters, 7-year-old Miles, who attends St. John Berchmans School, and 4-year-old Harlow, who is in a pre-kindergarten program.

Emily will receive four sacraments during Holy Week: She and Michael will celebrate the Sacrament of Marriage as they say their vows in the church Holy Saturday morning, and then she will receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the evening Easter Vigil with her fellow RCIA catechumens. Her daughter Harlow will also be baptized at the Easter Vigil.

Emily is a stay-at-home mom and volunteers at St. John Berchmans school. She said her favorite part of RCIA has been, “expanding my knowledge of the Catholic faith, gaining a stronger relationship with God and new wonderful relationships with others in the class.” Her favorite movie is Ip Man and her hobbies include reading new cook books and cooking.

Welcome to Our Family of Faith!

During the month of February, Saint John Berchmans welcomed, through the Sacrament

of Baptism, four new members to our ever-growing family of faith.
