ST. JOSEPH’S NAMALAKA MALAWI—THIS WEEK IN NAMALAKA, ST. JOSEPH PARISH The Sister Parish Committee made a presentation to the Friday Night Hispanic Youth Group last week that was
a joy to see and be part of. We shared a slideshow, spoke on the geography, history and culture of life in Ma-
lawi and the challenges and struggles. We tried on the mode of dress called “chitenge”, an all purpose wrap
type skirt and we learned the song “Tiembey Alleluia” (we Sing Alleluia) and how to uulate-(like singing Woo-
Hoo or Yay in English), making sounds of praise and joy! We recorded this event and sent the images to Na-
malaka and here is the response we received: “MONI (hello) We are really moved and our hearts are close to
yours with enthusiasm and love. The photos and videos are marvelous and beautiful. Nobody expected any of
you to remember the Malawi songs and my kids are wondering how Azugu (white people) can sing in
Chichewa. Filled with joy and love I promise to share these with the congregation before Mass on Feb. 10.
The youth here are composing and practicing simple short songs to be sent so that you will share with the
youth at your parish.” Love in Christ and Mary, John Andrew Phiri (head school master)
TRIP TO MALAWI IN JUNE—If you are feeling called to learn more about going to Malawi, call Marie Hedden at
206-948-5166 or email [email protected] or come to our meetings 3rd Thursdays at 7:00 pm at the

Family Connection
We may be unfamiliar with fig trees, but we might know about the growth of spring flowers. Perhaps we have looked at a dry, brown flower bulb and wondered how this produces the colorful tulip or daffodil blossom that we expect to bloom in the spring. Perhaps we've even thought about the pa-tience and hope that are required to plant flower bulbs in October. We don't have to be gardeners, however, to know about patience and hopefulness. As parents, we practice these virtues each day with our children. We may become frustrated and even angered by their willfulness and lack of coop-eration. Yet we continue to offer our attention and guidance in hope that one day our efforts will bear fruit. Today's parable suggests that God is like that with us, working with us in patience and in hope that one day we will show evidence that such work is not in vain. As parents, we know God's kindness when we find evidence for our hope for our children. Does God find such glimmers of hope as he works with us?
Gather your family and show a spring flower in bloom. Recall that in the fall this flower was a dry bulb (if a flower bulb is available, show this as well). Talk about the hopefulness and patience shown by those who plant flower bulbs in the fall in the hope that they will bloom in the spring. Read aloud today's Gospel, Luke 13:1-9. Compare the parable of the barren fig tree to your discussion about spring flowers. Consider the patience and hopefulness that God has with us as he works with us, calling us to return to him when we sin. Offer prayers of thanks and praise to God for his patience and hopefulness towards us. Conclude by praying together today's Psalm, Psalm 103.

ST. BRENDAN WOMEN’S BOOK CLUB This month’s book is entitled, “Mercy in the City:
How to Feed the Hungry, Give Drink to the Thirsty,
Visit the Imprisoned and Keep your Day Job by
Kerry Weber. This is that rare book that will indeed
make you laugh and cry, but also pray and serve.
“Highly recommended.”-James Martin, SJ...plus it’s
short and a great Lenten read. Since this month’s
book club meets on Leap Year Day, Monday, Febru-
ary 29th, we’re having a party along with our
meeting. Bring treats to share and join us at 7:00
pm in the Brendan House Dining Room.

LIBRARY CORNER We’ve been noticing that our kids books are not be-
ing checked out and so we’d like to help you find
them a bit easier. We have placed several books in
the “Kids Drawer” in the kiosk in the Narthex. Also,
the bottom shelf of the library cart—also in the Nar-
thex, is loaded with kids books about Jesus, Mary,
the Saints, Mass...all the things kids would enjoy dur-
ing Mass. Plus of course there’s a whole cart of chil-
dren’s books inside of the library. Help your kids
have a great Lent as they grow closer to our loving
Father in Heaven.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CORNER
The Heartbeat Serving Wounded Warriors organi-
zation hosted a “Thank You” luncheon for the
area Knights and their spouses for the extraordi-
nary support of their Christmas Wish Programs
like Christmas Stockings and Adopt-a-Family. We
met 3 Wounded Warriors and Kimber, a four-
legged hero. They shared their injury stories and
how Heartbeat has been a life-saver for them.
Heartbeat is launching a new therapy program, K
-9 Service Warriors.
Don’t forget to circle your calendars for the
March 14 Potato Bake hosted by the Knights
and St. Brendan Elementary School. This is a
celebration for one of the greatest holidays of
the year, St. Patrick’s Day.
Did you know that every month the Knights col-
lect about 10,000 lbs of food for the local food
banks? These donation from Safeway stores are
delivered to St. Vincent de Paul, Hopelink, St.
Martin de Porres and Lake City Food Bank. If you
would like to be part of this vital food network,
contact any member of the Knights.

how much she has been appreciated. Please send in your fa-
vorite memories or special message for Mrs. Babb to be in-
cluded in a memory book. Please send into Miss Constantino

tools you’ll need to clean up winter debris, weed and even plant.
What a great Lenten service project! If anyone has a wood

that would be helpful. Please call Anneliese at 425-770-2103 if you have
such a machine or if you have any questions.

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT The parable in today’s Gospel clearly warns that we, like the fig tree, will be
judged by our fruit. While God mercifully provides us with time and
opportunity, let us give witness to our faith with deeds of kindness and
generosity!
ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL Our goal for the Annual Catholic Appeal is $145,541 of which we have
payments of $128,527 which leaves a balance of $17,014. The $17,014
amount is what the Parish would have to pay the Archdiocese if the ACA
Campaign was to end today. If you have not made a pledge, please do so. If
you have made a pledge, you have until April to complete your pledge. Any
shortfall has to be made up by St. Brendan Parish.
MYPARISHAPP myParish App has been renewed for another year. Two new buttons have
been added: “Reflections” by Scott Hann and “Lent”. The background color
has also been changed. If you do not have myParish App, you can get it for
free through the Itunes Store or the Android Store. See the display in the
Narthex or call John Phillips at the Parish Office at 425-483-9400 for more
information.
NEW IN THE PEW Soon their will be blue envelopes in the pews with a big welcome on them and
also with welcome in many other languages. This envelope is to be used by
our visitors when they want more information about St. Brendan. The
information sided is written in both Spanish and English. This envelope may
also be used if you forgot your envelope.
