We asked this slightly unusual question of Bishop Steve on Thursday 20 February, have a listen to his answer. W hat would you take with you on your boat? Thanks to Bishop Kelvin Wright for the photograph of the boat (that inspired the question!). Prayers for the Diocese…tomorrow, Thursday 27 February 2020 at St Mark's Green Island, 3pm - 4.30pm A warm invitation to join with Bishop Steven in 2020 for continuing prayers for the Diocese. At all times, pray by the power of the Spirit. Pray all kinds of prayers. Be watchful, so that you can pray. Always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. (Ephesians 6. 18) You may have read in the Diocesan Newsletter that once a month I go to different churches and spend up to 2 hours praying for the Diocese. Some of you have joined me for some of the time, and one or two have asked me what it is all about… I believe in the reality and power of prayer. I am not especially drawn to uniformity of practice, and indeed a variety of styles can often be wonderfully refreshing, and my goal is that we pray as we can, not to worry about what we cannot do. For these monthly times of Prayer for the Diocese it has developed into a generally unstructured time of prayer. Usually we are silent, and for myself I try to start with about 15 minutes of being quiet and open before God – not bringing specific requests or concerns, but waiting on Him. My own practice is then to use a notebook (I prefer an electronic version) and I name every Parish, Ministry Unit, Chaplaincy and Anglican “presence” before God: the leaders, personnel, the situation as I know it, items for thanksgiving as well as problems for solving. I try to balance offering a list with giving time for God to inform my prayers. I will pray for the non-church part of the Diocese, with specific intentions though it is much more general in nature. I pray for our country – for our leaders and for prosperity. And (unashamedly) I pray for a Christian revival. I rejoice and celebrate in the almost innate spirituality that is in many of the people and much of the geography of New Zealand, but we are Christian – followers of Jesus Christ, and I believe he has something for all people that can’t be found apart from him.

We've spotted a mistake in Statute11We have uploaded a new version of Statute 11 (HomeMission Fund) onto the website after spotting a mistakein clause 7 (a)

In the incorrect version, 7 (a) was repeated in 7 (b) i.e. we leftout that grants were available from this fund "to parishes,Pastorates and the Cathedral District where there is anassistant curate in training". The correct version is on the

website here, and we are reprinting hard copies of the statute for those who have hard copies.

Remember that as soon as statutes are printed they are uncontrolled, and the website will alwayshave the most up to date version.

You can visit the statutes area of the website here.

From Anglican Missions BoardPlease find attached the Tikanga Giving Schedule for theDunedin Diocese for January 2020.

Kia ora Dunedin Diocese

Please find attached the Tikanga Giving Schedule forthe Dunedin Diocese for January 2020.

Each parish is represented by the following colours:

• Green - where giving has increased (compared to the same time last year)

• Orange - where giving has decreased (compared to the same time last year)

• Blue - where giving is the same (compared to the same time last year)

• Brown - no giving this month

• Red - where there has been no giving for the year to date.

We have taken out the parishes that have not given for past year or so just to keep the table simple.

January always a very quiet month but the figure for this year is up on the one for 2019 – so that’s areally good start to the year. Thank you!

At the OMTP meeting next week, we will have a look at parishes that are no longer giving to get abetter sense as to why that might be (noting individual contributions are not included in theseTikanga Giving figures) and to see how Anglican Missions might get alongside and provide support.

Diocesan Property Consultation2020We are running workshops to help develop a morestrategic way of thinking about how we use our propertyassets to advance God's kingdom. The first one tookplace in Dunedin on 18 February. Remaining ones areopen to Clergy and Lay Synod reps as well as ParishWardens, with substitute places available Vestrymembers...

Workshops organised to date

Archdeaconry of Central Otago, Tuesday 26 May 2020, St Andrew's Church, 41 BlythStreet, Cromwell from 10 amArchdeaconry of Southland, Saturday 4 April 2020 (details to be confirmed) Archdeaconry of Oamaru-East Otago: Dates to be confirmed.

Bring yourself and a ballpoint pen to any workshop.

Why are we doingthis?

The Diocesan Council has been becoming increasingly caught up in property matters but withouthaving an agreed pathway for how to handle many situations apart from what is set out in Statute 3.

In the Synod held in 2019, the following motion was carried: That this Synod affirms the DiocesanCouncil intention to undergo a consultation process around the sale or other use ofproperties, buildings and other assets within the context of future mission within theDiocese.

This series of workshops throughout the Diocese this year that will take place in archdeaconrygroupings. They are open to Clergy and Lay Synod reps as well as Parish Wardens, with substituteplaces available to any Vestry members who have an interest or contribution to make around thisproperty discussion.

What do I need to do to prepare?

The information attached below provides pre-reading for the workshops. If you have any troubleaccessing or downloading any of the resources below or want a hard copy of variouspapers sent to you, please contact us by clicking this link, or email the Registrar with“Property Resources” in your subject line.

During the workshop, the following questions will be looked at in small (parish or communities ofinterest) groups, and you may find it useful to reflect on these before the workshop:

What are the particular dynamics you have around properties entrusted to you? (seepages 2-5 of the Diocese of Dunedin Strategic Property Strategy Consultation Paper 2020)In your setting, what is the most important consideration when thinking aboutproperty and how it can aid your ministry in the future? (think of this in terms of whereyou think your Parish might be at in 10-20 years time)What is your take on the Strategic Property Criteria? Anything not quite right? Anythingmissing? (see pages 7-8 of the Diocese of Dunedin Strategic Property Strategy ConsultationPaper 2020)If you were to rank in order of importance the suggested Strategic Property Criteria, what would this be? (individual exercise)What weight would you give to each criteria? (each person will be given 20 dots to"spend" as they want by placing these next to each criteria displayed in the room).

After the workshops, the combined feedback will be collated and given back to Diocesan Council forconsideration. We hope at the end of this process to have some information that will assist theDiocesan Council and Faith Communities in their decision making around property, with thepotential for motions/bills related to property to be taken to a future Synod.

Please continue to hold this process in your prayers.

Updating procedures on bestcommunion and pastoral practices. With the current international concerns over the Wuhanvirus, the General Synod office has forwarded helpfuladvice on best communion (and pastoral) practices.

The Diocese of Christchurch also has a web page with useful"extra" information and advice worth following

____________________________________________________________

Rev'd Canon Michael Hughes (General Secretary) writes:

"With the current international concerns over the Wuhan virus, it has been suggested to us fromsome with expertise in the field that it may be timely to revisit any previous policy/ advisories onbest communion (and pastoral) practices that you may already have from previous instances (i.e.around SARS/ AIDS/ Flu/ etc) - especially regarding hygiene during Liturgy and Eucharist –handshaking, hand cleaning, distribution and receiving of communion.

I see from email newsletters that some of you are already doing this.

As well as reassuring people that attending services and participating in communion is relativelysafe, there are some ‘best practices’ that can be encouraged.

For example the Anglican Church in Canada has online this advice:

“Nevertheless, eucharistic ministers should be instructed in the proper way to wipe the chalicebetween communicants. Some procedures that are helpful include:

(1) wiping the chalice on the inside of the rim as well as on the outside;

(2) opening the purificator to its full size so that a clean part of the purificator is used foreach communicant (it may be necessary for the minister to use more than one purificator);and

(3) rotating the chalice so that the next communicant does not drink out of the same placeon the cup.”

During the 2003 SARS crisis the Anglican Church in Canada developed some guidelines that arebased around good medical science. Links to these are below and the first pamphlet is also attachedas a PDF version to print.

Cursillo 3 day event April 2020Cursillo is a movement of the Anglican Church under theoversight of each Diocesan Bishop. The goal of Cursillo isto help the Church in its mission to bring all the worldand the whole of life under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

The main way of doing this (and empowering Christians in this way) is through offering a three-daycourse for people to take part in. This provides the vision and offers an on-going process forachieving this goal. Cursillo equips Christians to live out their baptismal calling to serve Christ in theworld.

Below is the application/registration form for Dunedin Combined 23 which is being held at StPeter's College, Gore from Friday 17 April to Monday 20 April 2020. You can also look at the leafletthat explains Cursillo further and tells you about the process you need to follow to attend.

Dunedin Diocese uses a ‘Pay it Forward’ ethos so Dunedin Combined 23 has been paid for by thoseattending the previous three day Cursillo in 2018. Those attending this Cursillo will only be asked togive what they feel able to donate towards the next Cursillo. These donations are eligible for taxrefunds.

If you want any further information or would like to help sponsor someone to attend, contact AnneGover: [email protected] (03) 208 5235 or 027 311 0625
