Volunteering with the A.S.A.

I want to talk about the role that volunteers play at the Aurora Seniors' Centre. Actually, the day-to-day activities at the Centre are all handled by our volunteers, supported and complemented by the endless work of our amazing staff members Karie Papillon, Andrew Bailey and Bill Hawke. As examples, the first people you see when entering at the front desk are all volunteers. The lunches are prepared and served by volunteers, drinks are served by volunteers, dances are run by volunteers and our Special Events are created, organized and run by volunteers. In addition, there are a variety of committees, all composed of volunteers, which organize and support activities for our members. If you have enjoyed teas, fashion shows, galas, plays or the recent successful purse sale, you can thank the volunteers of the Special Events Committee. Each of these events takes time to plan and organize and requires many hands to make them happen. While we do have many people who are willing to help plan these events, what we really need are people willing to take the lead role for each event. We are looking for leaders. So please, give some serious thought to joining a committee to volunteer in an area that interests you. You can start by offering to help with just one event or activity to see how much you enjoy it. It's a wonderful way for new members to meet more people and make friends. Actually, as I look at it, the more you put into something, the more you will get out of it. This is, after all, your Seniors' Centre. The statistics for 2018 indicate that 160 volunteers contributed 20,000 hours of work to the Centre. How awesome is that ! So please be sure to thank the volunteers at the Centre who greet you at Reception, serve you lunch and wine, and members who sit on the Board of Directors. All these members help keep our Centre running smoothly for all of us. By: Jan Freedman.

Aurora's Seniors' Centre Without Walls Seminar In March 2019, staff at the Aurora Seniors' Centre are excited to announce the launch of Seniors’ Centre Without Walls. Join us on Wednesday, March 6 at 1 p.m. to learn more.

Seniors’ Centre Without Walls (SCWW) is a free community outreach program to support vulnerable and isolated seniors and adults with physical disabilities who may find it difficult to leave home for extended periods of time due to financial constraints, transportation difficulties, and/or health and mobility issues.

Through the use of conference calls, SCWW provides the opportunity for participants to obtain pertinent health-related information through direct access and conversations with professionals from their community, later-life-learning opportunities, participation in brain-stimulating activities and, most importantly, to feel part of a community and have an opportunity to create new and meaningful friendships.

Tax Time Seminar It is February and to many of us that means we should be preparing for income tax time. Not something we look forward to, but something we cannot avoid. In the past, our ASA tax expert, Robert York, has attended one of our February computer club meetings. This year, in order to make his expertise available to more members, we are going to do a tax seminar in the ASA lounge on Wednesday, February 27 at 1 p.m. You will see one of the popular Canadian tax software programs demonstrated and Robert will be there to answer your questions.

BORROWING

Did you borrow a Scrabble game from the Centre? Would you please return it. Did you borrow a large tin foil box from the kitchen at the Centre? Would you please return it.

The games and items at the Aurora Senior Centre are not to be borrowed and taken from the Centre. We treat everything at the Centre with respect and care so that everyone will get to use them.

What better way to volunteer and have an impact on the enjoyment of the Centre by our valued members than to run in the upcoming election to serve as a member of the Board of Directors! We encourage you to give this idea some thought as the elections are fast approaching. Applications will soon be available at the Registration Desk. The Board meets once monthly on the 3rd Monday of each month. To help understand the responsibilities of a Board member, just ask any of the current members of the Board who would be only to happy to share the joys of serving as a Board member of your Aurora Seniors Association!

Knotty Knitters A warm welcome from the Knotty Knitters. We are at the Seniors’ Centre from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on

Mondays throughout the year. We knit, embroider, crochet, laugh, exchange jokes and share Family

happenings. Are you ready for those long Winter months ahead? It’s time to cuddle up with those

warm sweaters, socks and blankets that you bought at the Christmas bazaar or you could give them

to a loved one for a Valentine’s Day present. Stop in and have a peek at what the Knotty Knitters

have been up to this past year. We even knit coats for our four legged friends!! Any of the hats,

scarves etc. that have been done by the Knotty Knitters during this past year have been donated to

Charity. As far North as the Yukon!! Also closer to home we have donated finished items to the

Ronald McDonald House. We now have our display case with some of our finished goods. As you

step through the front doors of the Centre you will see it to your left. The hugs and smiles are always

free and lasting friendships are formed. So feel free to stop in at any time and stay for a look and a

chat. If you see something one of the Knotty Knitters is making and wish to purchase it, you can do so

as well. All proceeds go back into the Centre. We love to talk. If you wish to join us please do so as

beginners will be more than welcome to join us. Remember we are not strangers, only Friends you

Evergreen Choir For many years it has been a tradition for the Aurora Seniors Evergreen Choir to sing at the annual Memorial Service held here at the Centre. The one held on Wednesday, January 23rd was no exception, but there were some difficulties – being January, the weather was difficult, some members were – excuse the expression: “under the weather”, but still all went well. Our Coordinator, Karie Papillon, conducted the service and our Director, Dan W. Lenz, directed the choir. The choir is now looking forward to Spring and to our Spring Concert which is set for Saturday, May 25 at 1.30 p.m. If any member of the Centre is thinking of joining the choir, now would be a very good time to do it, because, we will soon be receiving the music and lyrics we will be singing at the spring concert. We look forward to an exciting season. If you love to sing, come join us.

The Silver Stars The dates for the performances of the next Silver Stars production of “Let Him Sleep ‘Til It’s Time for His Funeral” have been changed to Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23 – summertime and the living is easy as the song goes. The cast is in place for this production so there will be no auditions. There will be an open meeting for anyone interested in becoming part of the Silver Stars Theatre Group on Monday, March 18 at 3 p.m. in the Craft Room.

We will be discussing: a) Ideas and suggestions from the group for future productions b) A Director for future productions c) Who would like to be involved with the Silver Stars in various capacities – acting, directing, stage crew, scenery, costumes, etc.

Book Club Do you enjoy reading books and discussing them with a circle of like-minded people? Then join our book club. Every member of our book club can suggest a book, so there is quite a variety of books that we will read and discuss. We meet every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in the Seniors’ Centre.

In the month of February we are reading "The Back of the Turtle" by Thomas King. It is the story of Gabriel Quinn, a brilliant scientist, who returns to the Smoke River Indian Reserve, where his mother and sister lived, and finds that almost everyone in the community has disappeared. Even the sea turtles are gone - poisoned by an environmental disaster. It is a story of betrayal, salvation, and the resilience of life, as, at the end, the animals, including turtles, are coming back.

Stop by and visit the library any time to see what is available, you are sure to find something of interest. We now have a large and growing selection of current mystery, fiction, romance , biography and sports books along with a selection of DVD movies. We also have a number of jigsaw puzzles, and one is always on the go to challenge those who drop in. With the holiday season is over. You maybe wondering what to do with the new books and movies you received as presents that you have finished reading or watching. The library will gratefully accept these as donations. Just drop them off any time and our volunteers will sort them. The library is run on the honour system. We ask that you try to return books and movies within three weeks, so more members can enjoy reading or watching them. If you have some of our books lying around at home that you have inadvertently forgotten to return, it is never too late, just drop them in the return bin and we will place them back into circulation.
