    A WORD FROM YOUR PRESIDENT

    Hello, Continental!

November has been a busy month, and an eventful one. We are extremely pleased to have yet another member, Jane Lozano, volunteer to serve on the CDC board. At this time, of course, I have no idea when we will be able to return to dancing, and so it is unknown when we will be able to formally nominate Jane, finalize our slate of officers and introduce them to you. Meanwhile, your board continues to meet virtually and confer via Zoom and telephone to handle all club affairs and needs.

Michael Johnson, the executive director of Kids Dance Outreach (KDO) had been scheduled to attend our dance before year’s end to receive our most recent contribution. Since that presentation cannot occur in person while our dances are halted, we are going to mail the funds to KDO. Once things return to normal (speedily and in our day, we hope and pray), Michael and his “kids” will be happy to put on a wonderful show for us, as they have done in the past.

Toward the end of November, we were forced to put an indefinite halt on dancing events due to the surge in coronavirus cases. On the morning of Sunday, November 15 (the day we had planned to hold our annual Barn Dance), my Verizon cell phone dinged, as it always does on Sundays at 9 AM. My on-screen time report for the preceding week showed I had used 159% of my usual time texting and talking, showing average daily usage for that week of almost three hours! Wow, that’s a lot of minutes. Let me share with you where the time went.

First, we needed to move the monthly board meeting from Monday to Tuesday evening, which involved a lot of texting among the board members. Then on Wednesday, I was informed that the Governor’s new rules would be going into effect Sunday, limiting our attendance to 50 people. Since we had 59 people at our Halloween dance, how should we best handle that?? Dozens of back-and-forth suggestions flew among cell towers, culminating in a vote by all the board members on a plan.

Then Thursday arrived, bringing news that Mayor Hogsett was of a different opinion than the governor; nothing would change in terms of attendance limits until Sunday at midnight. The board members first needed to agree with each other as to precisely what the mayor had said, and what that meant for our dance. So, once again, via telephone and text, there was more discussion and finally, another vote. Rudy sent out the weekly memo, while we all heaved a sigh of relief, thinking we were on cruise control until Sunday night…Alas, NOT.

A Friday morning call from Monica McClurg informed me that at least one of our members had tested positive for Covid 19. The affected individual(s) had attended Monica’s Wednesday senior dance, and there was concern that the virus had spread. Once again, the board members needed to agree on the best and safest solution, which as you know by now, was to shut down for a few weeks. Rudy sent yet another weekly memo, following yet another bunch of inter-member texts and calls. (Verizon must be lovin’ this, I thought).

We do not know how long it will be before the Continental Dance Club can start dancing safely once again. What I will tell you is that Rudy will send the weekly memo out like she always does every Thursday evening with updated information. You can also call our telephone hotline at 317-767-4040 or check the website at www.continentaldanceclub-indy.com for the latest news. Of course, if you want to have a friendly conversation with me (Verizon be darned), feel free to call me @ 317-491-2794.

We feel blessed to have been able to continue to dance over the past four months, and can’t wait to do it again. Thank you for your loyalty to our club and to the wonderful activity of ballroom dance.

    Thanks, President Dave

Not to brag, but he’s good because he practices, Bob Lewis explains, borrowing a line from renowned cellist Pablo Casals. You mean dance practice? Well, that, too. Bob and longtime dance partner Sailon take bi-weekly lessons with Jonas Kazlauskas at Starlite Ballroom. Whenever he’s not doing a Friday night gig with one of the eight bands in which he plays, you’ll find Bob doing international folk dancing at the church on 16th and Delaware. A dance lover since first grade, Bob originally joined Continental Dance Club in 1971. Career demands and extensive travel have stood in the way of his consistent involvement in our club over the ensuing years. Still, for year 2000, Bob proudly served as CDC King.

Growing up on a farm near Sugar Creek, Indiana, Bob Lewis was introduced by a local teacher to the trombone, paving the way to his lifelong involvement with music. Earning undergrad and graduate degrees in music from Indiana State University and Indiana University School of Music (paying for his education as a union musician), Bob was named for three prestigious music awards. By now a family man, Bob changed career paths, considering studying the law in order to serve in the FBI, but finally chose to earn a graduate degree in Social Work from IU. He went on to do social work at the Indiana Boys School and later served as executive director of a nonprofit agency. In a final career shift, he launched a long and very successful stint in dental supply sales.

Always, along the way, there were cycling, travel, dancing (folk, square, ballroom) - and music. If you enjoy something that makes you healthy, mentally and physically, Bob reasons, that’s great. A member of the Central Indiana Bicycling Association, he’s competed no fewer than 30 Hilly Hundred rides, and loves nothing better than bicycle tours in beautiful places. An eight day bike tour on St. Marten, a group ride in Kyoto, Japan, and a mountain tour in Colorado are among his favorite experiences.

All three of Bob Lewis’ offspring appear to have inherited their father’s energy and his focus on excellence. Daughter #1 is a mechanical engineer in Bloomington; her sister teaches art near Terre Haute; Bob’s son is a master carpenter in Portland, Oregon.

On any day of the week, you’ll find Bob Lewis at rehearsals and performances of Swing Shift, the Starlighters, and Dr. Jazz, as well as at sessions of brass choir and the symphonic band, making music on the clarinet, trombone, and euphonium, with a little piano thrown in for flavor. In addition to all those sessions, Bob devotes a couple of hours each day to practice! (With all that rehearsing and performing, is there really a need to practice, one might wonder?). Oh, yes. Like Casals, Bob will assure you, he’s good because he practices!

    OCTOBER BIRTHDAYS

    NOVEMBER BIRTHDAYS

    COVER UP AND DANCE WAIVER

The CDC doesn’t know when dances will resume, but the mask policy will remain in place for the foreseeable future. Masks covering both one’s nose and month are

required for anyone who attends Sunday night dances. In addition, individuals must

sign a dance waiver. Forms can be found in the weekly memos, in the monthly

newsletter and at the dance when you check in. Social distancing is also required.

The club provides three bottles of hand sanitizer, strategically placed throughout the

facility. It is suggested that dancers also bring their own.

See you on the dance floor.

We were not able to take pictures this year of those folks who had birthdays in October and Novem-

ber, but we want to wish you all a happy birthday. These pictures were taken several years ago.
