A first helloIn her own words by Danielle Matthews

This deployment was my husbands

first and it was our second pregnancy We

were all sorts of torn with emotions but

knew we would be able to make the best

of it

Both of our babies genders were un-

known until birth he gets to announce it

This has always been really important to

us to keep as a tradition and we werent

letting the deployment get in the way

I sent boxes of both its a boy and its

a girl stuff so he could take pictures to

announce when I finally had our baby

It allowed us to include him even

though he wasnt here and keep our tradi-

tion alive It helped both of us really

The homecoming was his first time

meeting our new baby boy I chose to

leave our oldest at home and have my

mom take him to school and not let him

know daddy had come home We came

home my husband was able to bond with

our newest little one and then we went

to the school to surprise our oldest at

lunch

For us these memories will last a life

time Thinking of the special moments

we would have made the deployment go

by much faster and smoother

bull If moving out of state contact TRICARE about your coveragebull Talk about a financial plan Save the extra pay by putting it in the Savings

Deposit Program if available The interest rate is as much as 25 quar-terly Watch emotional spending on both sides

Reunion tipsbull Communication is key Talk to your Service Member about the reunion

prior to her return Discuss any changes that have occurred with the children house car etc Discuss any concerns you both may have

bull Be flexible and watch your expectations Things have a tendency tochange rapidly with the date and time of your Service Memberrsquos return Be open and take it one day at a time Concentrate on whatrsquos important
