Ever watch those movies where stranded teens wander up to a dark, lonesome house and knock on the door for help? They’re quickly pulled into an unimaginable nightmare, and the thrill you feel rising inside you is just beginning.
Become part of the thrill—immerse yourself in an alternate reality, walk-ing into the nightmare with them. Think the fright is over? Oh, no—it’s only just beginning.
Enter into the Theatrical Nightmare’s “A Walk in the Dark,” a live Halloween event produced by the Nelson Recre-ation Center and the BOSS Team.
“A Walk in the Dark” greets you at Shoreline Park Thursday, Oct. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 29 from 7 to 10 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 30 from 7 to 10 p.m.
“The Theatrical Nightmare is in-teractive horror theater, not simply a haunted house,” says John Talaske,
long-time volunteer. “Special effects have become larger and more lifelike as we’ve evolved into a classic horror show—where spectators become part of an alternative reality.”
Talaske continues, “We aim to ter-rify you by taking you out of your environment and immersing you in ours. You get disoriented, you get ter-rified, you become part of the play. We also warn parents that this is not an event for young children.”
Even so, actors are taking off their masks for a few hours for a not-so-scary show Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. Talaske emphasizes that safety is paramount and emergency exits are available throughout the exhib-its. Guests are always led through the show by guides, and personnel
trained in first aid are on site. The show’s producer, Bill Strock, and
volunteers spend the month leading up to the event holding production meetings, laying out floor plans, build-ing sets and working out traffic flow. BOSS sends out the call for volunteers and actors a month out, then prepares them with stage directions, rehearsals, costumes and makeup. Volunteers also help with monster maintenance, tak-ing tickets, guiding guests and enter-taining those waiting in line.
Actors and volunteers are always welcome before the production. If you’re interested in acting like a mon-ster, call BOSS at 253-967-5636.
For pricing and more information on “A Walk in the Dark,” visit JBLMmwr.com and click on the link to Theatrical Nightmare.

Family & the homefront
by Patti Jeffrey
A group of JBLM youth took the stage at the Clark County Fairgrounds Thursday, Aug. 12 to perform an original play about who real American heroes are.
Anthony Davis, who wrote the play and organized the trip to the fairgrounds, teaches an actor’s workshop at the JBLM Teen Zone. He wrote “A Real American Hero,” which was brought to life by a group of middle-school children from his workshop.
“This was their first production, which was very well-received,” Davis says. “The play portrayed Superman, a pro wrestler and an American Idol-style singer, but they pointed to the real heroes—those serving in the American military. The play fit in perfectly with the fair’s Military Appreciation Day.”
The road trip reflected the Teen Zone’s participation in Speak Out for Military Kids, an arm of Operation: Military Kids. Through the program, youth learn ways to creatively express their thoughts and emotions to the community to develop better understanding and support of the military family experience.

Month evolved from the “Day of
Unity” in October 1981 conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The Day of Unity soon became an entire week devoted to activities conducted at the local, state and national levels. Six years later, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed. Each year, the Day of Unity is cel-ebrated the first Monday of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Take a dive in the colorful Puget Sound with JBLM Scuba. Get certified in the open-water scuba class, and if you’re already certified, sign up for a weekly social dive.
By Kimberly Rowe
Whether you’re curious about scuba diving and want to learn more, ready to take a plunge in the Puget Sound and get certified or you already have your certifi-cation, the Scuba Shop at the Northwest Adventure Center is here to help.
JBLM Scuba is a five-star PADI shop. PADI, or the Professional Association of Diving Instructors, is the most respected and recognized name in scuba diving.
This is a great time and place to get certified! As the weather cools, the visibility is improved due to decreased plankton in the water, and the water temperature is only about 10 degrees cooler in the winter than in summer. Wet or dry suits will keep you com-fortable. It’s an affordable hobby to take up at JBLM—only $180 for the open-water course, a price that in-
cludes books, rental gear and instruc-tion. Another reason to take up diving now: there’s more to see here!
“The Puget Sound has more aquatic life per square inch than anywhere else in the world,” says scuba manager Israel Ortiz, quoting Jacques Cousteau who visited the area in the ‘60s.
Take advantage of this opportunity and sign up for a class today! Classes offered include: open-water, advanced, rescue, master scuba diver, divemaster and refresher. Social dives are sched-uled weekly.
The Scuba Shop has quality gear available for purchase. For a sched-ule and pricing information, visit JBLMmwr.com or call 253-967-3405. The Scuba Shop is located inside the NAC, Building 8050 on NCO Beach Road at Lewis North.

Learning & earning
A s the holidays approach, we look
for ways to spend more time with our family and friends. Considering the current state of the economy, it is more important than ever to plan for these excursions. Planning your holi-day travel ahead of time can save you stress and money.
Having flexibility on your travel dates can save you money and keep you within budget. Take the time to compare airline travel dates and ticket sites. For a list of all airlines’ online deals, visit airfarewatchdog.com, or call the airlines directly for military dis-counts. When you find the right deal for you, book it fast. Prices only go up with demand, but you can track your flight prices on yapta.com. This site of-fers you help in getting a refund from the airlines if you find a cheaper flight after you purchased your tickets.
After purchasing, the task of packing the right clothes and necessities begins. Check out security changes and pack-ing restrictions early at tsa.gov. This site offers tips on getting through the security checkpoint quicker and tips for traveling with children. Since the Transportation Security Administration sets the guidelines for these situations, including items that are prohibited when traveling, it’s best to check the site prior to packing. Remember when you pack your carry-on to include essentials such as a change of clothes, toothbrush, deodorant, medications, jewelry and identification, etc. in case your luggage doesn’t make it to the same destination you do. Also, keep an
inventory of your checked luggage, in
