Several New amateurs passed their exams and some upgraded to another level. I saw a lot of people chatted with as many as I could. Everyone was very friendly, yet there seems a common theme rolling around hamfest lately. Everyone that knows each other talk to each other so you get a group over here and a different group over there. This is nice and some of you have not seen each other in a while. Here is the problem. You let people who are looking at your table of items that you may not know go by with out even a hello. This is a hobby that we are suppose to communicate with each other and we do a half way decent job on the air with it but when it comes to someone we do not know, well lets just say I have been keeping a little record on the side of people that come by the ARRL booth which I make a point of saying "hello" and "how you doing" telling me I was the first one that greeted them. Ladies and gentleman if you want the hobby to grow especially with younger folks you need to talk to them. Lets make this year the year that amateurs at hamfest make an effort to greet soemone you do not know who is not part of your circle or club. You might be surprised at what you get in return. We all need help in some area of this hobby and that new one may be a expert in that area but has just decided to get an Amateur License. Quartzfest was the 19th to 26th of January 2014 I went up on friday the 24th to listen to our Southwest Division Director Richard Norton N6AA just back from ARRL board meeting. Answered questions from the crowd. After Richard spoke I was given a chance to let them know how Arizona was doing. Gordon West was in attendance along with a lot of other amateurs. This event alway brings out the curiosity in me at all the differnt mobile type antennas. If you are an amateur and do mobile HF or RVing this event is well suited for you put it on your calendar. I would like to address an item concerning hamfest. When your committe or club puts on a hamfest and request ARRL approval of your event you take on certain items concerning the event. When you put the flyers together for your event include the ARRL logo, If you want ARRL DXCC card checkers at the event then put it on the flyer. This sections has several ARRL DXCC card checkers that are willing to show up at your event and check qsl cards for DXCC. If you do not inform the people that you have ARRL DXCC Card Checkers at your event and they show up because you asked them to and no one brings cards because your organization failed to put it on the flyers or advertise it in your news letter you just had some ARRL DXCC Volunteers travel a distance to just stand around. These volunteers are more then willing to show up and check QSL cards and answer your questions concerning Awards at any hamfest. Just remember they are volunteers and they do it on their time and gas expense so advertise their presence prior to the event. I am putting together the 2014 calendar and I have most hamfests in Arizona on it. So now is the time for your clubs that wish to have myself talk to them about the ARRL current events and what is going on in Arizona put in your request by emailing me dates, that means more than one date, and I will try and work it out to arrange it. I would really like to meet some of you on your own home turf. I am putting time aside to attend as many as I can. 2014 will be a great year in Amateur Radio with the ARRL Centennial Celebration to the Southwest convention. Last Call or chance to do this.

For those who don't subscribe to the ARRL mailing list, they have a very nice ARRL 100 year's Centennial certificate suitable for framing. You must be an ARRL member to access the PDF file. If you print it out on photo paper it looks really good. It will already have your name and call letters on the certificate.

Section Emergency Coordinator Happy New Year! I know that some of you received new radios for Christmas as I have heard some of them on the air. I’ve also heard conversations about how hard some of those new radios are to program so you have bought programming cables to program them. But, what happens if you are on a public service event or an emergency operation and you push a button and get your radio in one of those weird modes

Page 3: February 2014 Newsletter · February 2014 Newsletter ... This event alway brings out the curiosity in me at all the differnt mobile type antennas. If you are an amateur and do mobile

where it won’t do anything and you have to do a master reset? You won’t always have your computer and programming cable handy to reprogram your radio.

Take time this month and at least once a quarter to manually program a few frequencies in all of your radios. That way those programming skills will be fresh in your mind so you can quickly get back on the air when things go wrong. Dennis Bietry – KE7EJF / Section Emergency Coordinator / [email protected]

SCOUTING AND YOUTH IN AMATEUR RADIO A very large accomplishment was achieved by Ian M Valentine KE7TYZ, he joined the ranks of Eagle Scout in late December 2013. Ian holds a General Class Amateur Radio License, He was first licensed 13 May 2008 as a technician received his General in April 2009. Ian is show with his very proud Parents John Valentine KF7BXT (guess who was licensed first) and Mrs. Valentine. Ian's interest in Amateur Radio led him into robotics. Ian and his team came in 7th out of 50 at the latest robotics event. They have built some pretty amazing Frisbee throwing robots. Ian and his dad are both members of the Yuma Amateur Radio Club.

A couple of Boy Scouts/hams have built every project from the first two books by Alfred Morgan called "Boys first and second book of radio and electronics". They would like to work on the third book. These popular books were once found in almost every library across the country. I loaned my set to someone a few years ago. I have been searching used book stores to replace my copies. I have found all but the third book. If someone has the third book, please contact me. Thanks Tom K7DF

Emergency Communication

On 27 December, the Mesa ARC scrambled and provided rapid emergency communications for the search and rescue for Jophrey Cord. We established a command post, net control, provided FRS radios to non hams and relayed traffic between FRS and Ham radio for the coordination of 70 volunteers and the Superstition Search and Rescue team.

The following Facebook posts by the Superstition Search and Rescue reflect the professionalism of the Hams of Arizona and I just wanted to thank all those hams that participated in the search to locate this missing 13 year old child.

Robert Cooper [of the Superstition Search and Rescue Team] sent the following 2 posts to the Superstition Search and Rescue Facebook page:

1: I wish to thank the 138 community volunteers, the HAM Radio operators, the flying wing club and bicyclists that came out today to assist this family with the search efforts for their son Jophrey. Because of your numbers and dedication of a long day we were able to clear several miles of desert, eliminate possible foot prints, search several abandoned structures and houses, make contact with many businesses and residence in the area. The family has now identified another possible shoe print that has been located within the neighborhood. They are also working on a mass flyer campaign and could use assistance in getting them posted in high traffic areas. I am confident because of the love and care of this community that he will return home soon. God bless you all.

2: Good news everyone. I just received a call from Jophrey's Dad and he was located late tonight in good health through a posting on FB. Thank you again for all your assistance and prayers. Regards,

Vincent Chapman, AA, BSN President, Mesa Amateur Radio Club http://mesa-arc.org

QST Contributing Editor and ham radio humorist John G. "Jack" Troster, W6ISQ, of Atherton, California, died January 11. He was 93.

"While his contributions to QST were not limited to fiction, Jack will always be remembered for some of the most humorous pieces ever to be written about Amateur Radio," said ARRL CEO David Sumner, K1ZZ.

Licensed in 1935 at age 14 as W2ISQ in Yonkers, New York, Troster became W6ISQ after moving to California following World War II. Troster, Vince Chinn, W6EE (ex-K6KQN), Lee

"He was the consummate gentleman," said Rusty Epps, W6OAT. "He was warm and welcoming to everyone he met, and many Amateur Radio operators today enjoy the hobby as a direct result of his nurturing, encouragement and enthusiasm. Jack was known for his quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge of Amateur Radio history. His passing leaves a huge void."
