We held the Secondary swimming carnival on the
first Friday back at school for 2014. The weather
was absolutely beautiful. Sunny and warm, not a
cloud in the sky. A perfect day for a swimming
carnival.
The pool grounds were a sea of our red, blue,
green and yellow house colours.
There was a good turnout of students in
attendance, with all making the best of the day
especially taking advantage of the numerous
continuous swims.

At the end of the day we had an abundance of good
results, allowing us to take 20 students through to the
next stage, the Manning Zone Swimming Carnival, to
be held on Tuesday the 18th February.
I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all
students on their good behaviour and positive attitudes.
Also a massive thank you to all BCS staff for their assistance
with the smooth running of the carnival making the day a
success.

We also got to try our 5 brand new house
marquees and flags sponsored by the school’s
P&C. They looked amazing and kept the kids cool
in their shade. An enormous thank you to the
P&C for such a brilliant idea. Brooke McKenzie

Virtual selective class provision
opportunities for Year 7 students
Applications for Year 7 entry to the virtual
selective class provision are now available for
gifted and talented students at this school.
Students successful for entry to this virtual class
will still be enrolled at Bulahdelah Central School
for the majority of their subjects but will be
taught English, Mathematics and Science in a
virtual environment together with other gifted
and talented students in rural and remote areas
through the creative use of communications
technologies. This means that they can access a
more challenging academic program without
leaving home and friends to do so. Further
details are available on the following web sites:
http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/learning/k-
6assessments/shsplacement/ss_virtual.php
http://www.xsel.schools.nsw.edu.au/
If you wish to apply for this provision on behalf of
your child you will need to complete an online
application at
www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement urgently.
Although the web site indicates that these are
late applications they will not be considered late
by the selection committees if you apply before
28th February 2014.
All candidates for the virtual selective class
provision must take the Selective High School
Placement Test on 13th March 2014 and you will
be advised directly by the High Performing
Students Unit about the test centre you will have
to take your child to.
If you have already applied for a selective high
school on behalf of your child and now wish to
change one of your choices to the virtual
selective class provision, please do not complete
another application but write directly to the Unit
to make that change.
If you do not have access to the internet please
contact the Front Office for assistance.

REMEMBER!
to send in your Scholastic Book Orders by:
Thursday 20th February, 2014
Don’t miss out on some excellent books, posters,
games and fun things to make and do.
Parent information sessions will take place, this week, on Tuesday and
Wednesday afternoons. Each student received a note outlining days and session times. I encourage all parents to come along to these sessions to meet your child’s teacher, for the year, and to gain information about class routines, learning and expectations. There will also be an opportunity for parents to ask questions about any aspect of your child’s schooling. We look forward to seeing you at school for these important sessions.
There will be a music performance at school on Wednesday 26th February called, “Let the Music Move You.” Permission notes have been sent home for this performance. Notes and money are due at the office no later than Monday 24th February. I would like to remind parents that the girls’ uniform consists of navy shorts with a school polo shirt or the blue and white check dress. Skirts are NOT permitted to be worn by primary students. Our school leaders only are permitted to wear skirts on formal occasions when they are representing the school. It would be greatly appreciated if all students conformed to the school’s uniform policy. If you are not sure of the policy and uniform requirements please contact the school office and they can be forwarded to you for your information. Thanks for your cooperation.

What a great day we had at the swimming carnival! All of our PRIDE values were demonstrated consistently throughout the day. Lots of PARTICIPATION by the students, RESPECT for each other during the competition, lots of INNOVATION on the swimming strokes, DETERMINATION in bucket-loads and EXCELLENCE shown by all students whether swimming or supporting their peers.
I was very impressed by the behaviour of all students on the day. Well done to you all! Thanks so much to all the parents who came and supported the students. We are very lucky at BCS to have parents who are so keen to assist the staff in the running of carnivals. Without your support it would be very difficult to run such a day. Your input certainly contributed to the overall success of the day. Thank you!

The new shade shelters were a real hit and
looked absolutely fabulous. Thank you to the
P&C for providing the shelters and supporting
the school’s sun safe policy. The students
made excellent use of the shelters throughout
the day. We greatly appreciate your support!

Congratulations to the winning house Melba and to the age champions who are listed, later in this newsletter, along with some photos of the day’s events. Congratulations to all students who participated in the carnival. We are proud of your efforts! Although we had some very good individual swims, on the day, no students have qualified for the zone swimming carnival.

Do you litter in the school or community? If so look at what you have influenced.
Littering is wrong and with your help we can try
and make it stop at least in our school. Each week
we will show progress on our schools litter and
whether it is improving or getting worse. Each
week we will show the most polluted section of
the high school and the primary.
Year 6 are doing a unit this term called ‘What A
Load Of Rubbish’. One of our tasks is to write an
article for the school newsletter each fortnight
showing the progress of the students with our
school’s litter and whether it is improving or not.
Other students in our year will be making videos
and PowerPoint presentations to show to the
school, and small songs to encourage people not
to litter.
The Litter Preventers.

BCS DEPUTY PRINCIPAL:
Since our last newsletter I have had the
pleasure of attending two dinners to select
Lion’s Youth of the Year contestants from Club
levels to compete at the next level. At the first
dinner for Bulahdelah Lions, Carl Williams, Jake
Kilgannon, Emma Crispin and Daniel Sahyoun
competed by answering 2 impromptu questions
and delivering a prepared speech. Coupled with
an application and interview process earlier in the
day, Daniel was selected as the Club winner.
The second dinner was hosted by the Lions Club
of Tea Gardens and the Tea Gardens Lioness Club.
Bradley Kirkpatrick, Cordel Murphy and Jaimii
Gardner-Carroll were very close in the final point
score, with Cordel and Jaimii going through to the
next round. I am also delighted to say that each
Club involved has sponsored every competitor to
attend a Youth Leadership camp at the end of this
term.
Previous students who have attended this camp
say that it is one of the most empowering
experiences ever and the change in the students
when they return is obvious. I would like to
thank the 3 Lions Clubs involved for their ongoing
support for the school and our wider community.
On a more serious note, we have had concerns
with the behaviour of some students, who have
partaken in illegal activities on the school
grounds. Students and parents need to know
that all incidences of illegal activities such as
smoking and buying or selling illegal drugs
(including cigarettes for minors) must be
reported to police and will be dealt with in
accordance with the law.
There are also some students trying to provoke
fights between other students during recess and
lunch. I am sure everyone has seen the recent
media coverage regarding fights in schools where
students are now being charged with assault.
Students are reminded that inciting violence,
participating in fights or taping them is against
schools’ (and society’s) rules and laws. It upsets
me that I must include such a tone in my report,
however I think we all agree this is not an image
we want for Bulahdelah Central School.
Finally I would like to acknowledge and thank
Izabell Read (Yr 2) for the print that is hanging in
my office for Term 1. Izabell’s picture is certainly
a work of art, depicting happy children in a bright
and colourful graphic. I will be renewing the art
work in my office each term to display the great
work of our students.
