Letters . . .

Dear friends,

Your cards, phone calls, food, visits and prayers

have been so helpful and inspirational. In addition, I

received a beautiful BAPC prayer shawl, and it has cer-

tainly been a comfort to me. Thank you very much. I am

very grateful for all you have done. It is a blessing to be

apart of our BAPC congregation.

Calvin Hancock

Dear Friends,

There is no possible way we can thank you for all

that you have done and are doing for our family. We

are appreciative of Charles' tender, steady pastoral

care; Mary Beth Tombes' medical knowledge and com-

passionate counsel; of the BAPC family's prayer shawl,

prayer hands, and correspondence that aided us during

the early days of our journey and that continues to re-

mind us of the love and support we receive from our

community of faith.

Many Thanks again,

Liz, John and Joe Rupp

Adult Education Classes for Winter

Join us February 1 in the fellowship Hall as we introduce our new classes Adult Education classes for 2009: Saving Jesus and The Bible: General and Specific. We will also hear from pastor Charles Grant who will give an informative ses-sion on the amendments to the Book of Order. So Come February 1st to hear about our new classes and what is new in our denomination.

Saving Jesus Taught by Charles Grant

Ever feel like Jesus has been kidnapped by the Christian Right? Saving Jesus is a DVD-based small group ex-ploration of Jesus Christ for the third millennium. Featuring leading religious voices of our day, the class will be led by pastor Charles Grant. The format for each session includes conversation around the readings, a 20-minute video segment and guided discussion. Topics to be considered include the “what can we know about Jesus?” the teachings of Jesus and the wisdom tradition, Jesus’ ministry of compassion, and Jesus and his teachings about the kingdom of God. Join contemporary scholars such as Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, Matthew Fox, Amy-Jill Levine, James Forbes and our pastor for an exploration of the relevance of Jesus Christ for the third millen-nium.

The Bible: General and Specific How many times have you read through a passage and wondered “when it was written?” Have you ever felt ill-equipped to interpret scripture? Ever heard the word “Apocrypha” and wondered just what it is, and why these books are not in every bible? There are countless questions that we all have about how to utilize scripture and how to better our understandings in using the Bible. If you would like to know more, then join us Sunday morn-ings as we work through these questions with the help of The Thoughtful Christian. We will delve into topics such as: Bible 101, The Importance of Context, Types of Biblical Literature, How to Study a Bible Passage and many more. Classes will be taught by Harold Greer, Kent Pankey, Gina Turner, Sara Unetic, and others. Gather with us each Sunday as we gain a foundation for a central point in our faith: Scripture.

“CARE NOTES”

The Congregational Care Division invites you to check out our "Care

Notes" display in the hallway outside the church of-fice. "Care Notes" are booklets that offer guidance, support, and comfort for various life situations. The booklets address topics such as grief and loss, stress, worry, illness, busyness, faith and prayer. Please feel free to take "Care Notes" for your own use or to share with a loved one.

Kid’s Kingdom in

WORM

The Worm rotation for the month of February is the story of the friends who bring the paralytic to Jesus. The memory verse for this month is Mark 2:5 “When

Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your

sins are forgiven.”

The story we encounter this month is one of friend-ship and forgiveness. Four friends were not able to get through the crowds to bring their friend to Jesus. So they devised a plan to dig through the roof-- knowing that if they could just get their friend to Jesus he would be healed. The faith of the friends is amazing in this story and friendship is a timeless part of all of our lives.

The care and concern shown by the friends of the paralyzed man led them to bring him to Jesus, and just as Jesus brought healing, forgiveness, and new life to the crippled man, he also offers these to us. We need only believe and receive. The friends had such faith in Jesus that they were willing to go to great lengths, even dig-ging a hole in the roof, just to get their friend to Jesus. And it was because of the friends’ faith that the man was healed. Join us this month for each of our rotation workshops:

Cooking – learners will learn about the healing gift of blood donation & then will prepare a snack to be given to people who donate blood at the church’s next blood drive

AV/Media – learners will freeze specific scenes from the story with Polaroid pictures and then place the pictures in sequence to re-tell the story

Art – the learners will construct houses & peo-ple to re-tell the story – including the dig-ging through the roof

Arcade – learners will play cooperation games to encourage conversations regarding the power of friendship and forgiveness

We look forward to seeing each of you on Sunday

mornings as we learn about the story of the friendship and forgiveness. If you are interested in serving as a Worm Rotation Leader or for the Gatherings please contact Shawn Tho-mas Smith or Beth Unroe for more information. With each of us working together we can just like the friends in our story bring the children of our congregation to truly know Christ. “Whoever welcomes one such child

in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me

welcomes not me but the one who sent me.” Mark 9:37

Freedom Writers (PG13)

February 22 Freedom Writers is based on the true story of inner city kids raised on drive-by shootings and hard-core attitude - and the teacher who gives them the one thing they need most: a voice of their own. In a school torn by violence and racial tension, teacher Erin Gruwell battles an uncaring system in a fight to make the class-room matter in her student’s lives. Now, telling their own stories, and hearing the stories of others, a group of "unteachable" teens will discover the power of tol-erance, reclaim their shattered lives, change their world, and ultimately bring all of us who watch along the journey.

Food for the body, mind, and soul. All interested youth and adults are invited to watch and discuss this month’s film Freedom Writers from 5:00-7:30. Bring a bag supper to eat as we watch. Snacks and drinks will be provided. CHILDCARE WILL BE PRO-VIDED. Come this month and enjoy good company and thought provoking discussion. Friends are always welcome! Evening Worship February Evening Worship - “Relation-Ships: We are all in the same

boat!”

Relationships are very important to us. They bring us together, and sometimes even separate us. But we are not solitary creatures. We yearn to be in relationship with others. Yet we see relationships portrayed in many different ways. Which one is right? The media gives us ways of thinking about relation-ships, some are healthy and some are not, but how does Scripture call us to live together as brothers and sisters in Christ? Join us for Evening Worship as we explore relationships and how they are portrayed in the media and how God has called us to respond. Fea-turing clips from Aaron and Ben Houghton’s film Handle with Musical. No flashy commercials like the Super Bowl, just a momentous look into our lives of faith together!

March Evening Worship - “Spirituality 101” How do we pray? What does it mean to have a Spiri-tual Practice? How do we utilize scripture to reveal the Spiritual side of our Christian Faith? Getting in touch with our spirituality is easy for some of us, but for others, tapping into this sometimes hidden realm of who we are is not always easy. Spiritual practices such as prayer, meditation, and centering are just a few of the ways that Christians become closer to God. Join us for Evening Worship in March as we explore spirituality and seek ways in which we can become closer with the creator of each and every one of us. God is in and around us all the time, so let us come together and experience familiar and unfamiliar ways to tap into our Spiritual selves!

Walk Away Pounds Need help keeping one of your New Year’s resolutions?

Did you resolve that you would get more exercise in 2009? Well, BAPC can help you keep that promise.

Each Monday and Thursday night at 7:00 p.m., a group meets in Rooms 101-103 for a half-hour, low impact aero-bic exercise program called Walk Away the Pounds. This is a self-paced two-mile, walking-in-place opportunity for all ages.

Studies have shown that exercising for just one-half hour improves your health and helps you lose or maintain your weight. The added benefits of BAPC's program are that no membership fees are required and no special clothes or equipment are needed. Old sweats and walking shoes, and the desire to live healthy in 2009 is all that is required. And the fun and fellowship of your friends from the con-gregation as well meeting new people is the best part of the evening.

Whether as a supplement to another exercise program or as a new opportunity to improve your fitness, please come join us on Monday and/or Thursday evening to Walk Away YOUR Pounds. We hope to see you there!

For further information contact Ted or Cathy McCormack.

Why should the church oppose Payday and Car Title Lending? The 217th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) approved “A Reformed Understanding of Usury for the 21st Century,” which encourages individuals and congregations to become active in opposing questionable lending practices and encouraging ethical financial alternatives – especially for those who are poor and marginalized.

(See full document: http://www.pcusa.org/oga/publications/usury.pdf )

In Virginia, minorities, and single mothers are disproportionately targeted by car title and payday lenders. Victims face threats of bankruptcy, eviction, and repossession – all of which complicate already challenging financial situa-tions in difficult economic times.

Example of Car Title Lending: A single mother took out a car title loan for $1,250… leaving the lender with the title to her 2000 Ford Explorer. She paid $130 in upfront fees, and monthly payments at 300% (APR) interest. Over 11 months, she paid a total of $2,819 on her $1,250 loan, and still owed $1,558! Sadly, this is not an unusual story. Too many borrowers pay back many times the amount of their car title loans – only to lose their cars in the end.

What do we hope to accomplish? The Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy is working to have car title lending regulated under the Consumer Finance Act, which has established a 36% annual interest rate cap for small loans. Car

title lenders would then follow the same rules that apply to other people who offer small, secured loans.
