Dear Parents and Guardians, This morning our students and staff on the Québec trip are experiencing minus 8 0 temperatures under clear bright skies. When I checked in, some were visiting the Science Centre and some were off to historic Old Montreal. Later today they’ll head up the St. Lawrence to Québec City and participate in the winter carnival celebrations. You can see photos and follow along by going to our Facebook page . Mlle Gair will be making regular posts there. Don’t forget to share, repost, copy & paste, or somehow let others know about the great things happening at Cathedral School. Our kindergarten intake was very successful this year! What a nice turn around after the challenges we faced last year. Most people had been re- ferred by friends and colleagues who already have children at Cathedral School. What a wonderful testament to our staff and our programming. We know this is a great school, but what do the students think? We wanted to find out so we created a Graffiti Wall. Liisa has reprinted a few quotes on the last page of this newsletter but if you can make it inside to see for yourself, do so, then please continue down to the office and pick up your very own heart shaped sticky note and add your own comment to the graffiti wall. A couple of weeks ago, Todd and another parent thought it would be a great idea to get people together in a different venue and have some fun. They decided to secure 50 tickets for the upcoming Victoria Royals game on Feb 10. Every- one attending will be together in the stands, so it will be a great way to support our local team while spending some social time with other families from CCCS. Get your social face on, pull out that colourful scarf, and get ready to cheer! Tickets available at the school office. $15 each. The latest edition of the Diocesan Post, distributed to all Anglican parishes on Vancouver Island, Alert Bay, and the Gulf Islands contains a nice article about our school. Shrove Tuesday (also known as

“Pancake Day”) is the last day be-

fore Lent. Since Lent is a time of

abstinence, or giving things up,

eating pancakes is an indulgence

to be enjoyed while using up the

ingredients that were traditionally

forbidden during Lent, such as butter and eggs.

We will be serving a pancake to each student on the

morning of Tuesday, February 28th to continue this tradi-

tion. Gluten free options will be served to those students

who have gluten allergies.

Salmon eggs are in the tank in the front foyer! (Shhh, they need to rest)

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Breakfast: Tuesday, February 28

We need volunteers to cook, serve and clean up. Please click the link below to volunteer:

Updates by Mr. James Rhodes

The Christ Church Cathedral athletes have been hard at work as we enter February. The

boys middle school volleyball team has been practicing for weeks leading up to their first

game against SMUS, which ended in a decisive victory for our Flames. The girls team has

also been working tirelessly in order to be ready for their first game. Unfortunately, due to

injuries and the Quebec trip, their first game of the season was cancelled. However, they

are eager to get on the court for their next games in a couple weeks.

The grade five boys basketball team had an amazing first game against Oaklands, with a

complete team-effort win. The boys excelled together with very little practice, and appear

to be an exciting prospect looking ahead to the middle school team. Coming up, there is the

grade 5 basketball jamboree at SMUS and the VISAA swim meet at Commonwealth Pool,

two events that the coaches and athletes are looking forward to with great anticipation.

Want to see sports photos on the Sports Page? We need your help. Any parent attending a

game is encouraged to take photos and send any great shots to [email protected].

Thank you!

A very successful fundraiser! This year we raised $327.50 for Tokho, the student in India who CCCS has supported for several years. We beat last year’s total by over $100! Thank you to everyone for your support.

— The Outreach Club

A great day on the slopes for CCCS Middle

School students. A huge thank you to our

staff who put in a very loooong day. As you

can see from the big smiles, it was worth it.

Moving to a new area (let alone a new Country!) comes with many challenges. One of the most

important for parents is how to find the ‘right’ school for their children. In the absence of local

knowledge and friends we spent hours searching the web, checking educational listings and

looking at review sites trying to identify somewhere suitable for our 2 girls (aged 6 and 10).

We had quite a list of important criteria – a strong academic focus, small class sizes, strong

behavioural management, and a supportive & welcoming community: no mean feat!

After viewing and touring many of the local schools we met Stuart and very quickly felt that we

had found somewhere that ticked all the boxes. Our first term at Christ Church has confirmed

these first impressions and in many ways surpassed our expectations.

Academically we have seen both girls improve enormously and have some wonderful and wide

ranging opportunities to support the core subject learning. It was also wonderful to learn about

how many graduates from Christ Church go on to challenge programs, further reinforcing that

academics are clearly highly important here.

The community and families have been so welcoming, from friendly parents in the playground, to

opportunities to get involved with the school, supportive teachers and assistants with a real ‘can

do’ attitude when it comes to managing a fairly complex medical condition as well as everything

else!

Obviously we were aware of the difficult time the school experienced last year and the ongoing

challenges being faced, but to have found such a unique gem of a school that is succeeding in

providing such strong foundations in spite of adversity we are in no doubt that the school will

survive and thrive as more families discover this special place!

~ Joanne & Nicholas Daley

On Monday we created a “graffiti wall” for students to share what they love about our school. One word was used

more times than any other: FRIENDS. Coming in second was TEACHERS. Several students expanded their scope

of gratitude including several mentions of their families, and my personal favourite: “My whole life”. Here are some

sample quotes from the wall, telling what students love most about our school:

Great teachers and my friends
