Pre-pandemic, St. Valentine’s Day was a day for greeting cards, fancy dinners, cut flowers and weighty expectations. Quarantine, however, makes a lot of that simply out of the question. Even those of us who jump at any excuse to spoil our loved ones are faced with a necessary circumstantial interruption. There is no “busi-ness as usual” right now. We are all just trying to survive.

Worship today is not about supporting a status quo, of course. It is not about St. Valentine, either, but about the one to whom every saint’s life points: Jesus — Love Incarnate, Love Divine, our Lifeline in every circumstance. We worship this Christ and practice trusting his love for us this St. Valentine’s Day. And somehow, as is the case most Sundays, we find that we are a little freer to love back.

Worship today lets brother Valentine’s feast be what it is always meant to be: a chance to love God, neighbor and ourselves more deeply and more truly. How good it is to be surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, Wilshire. We may be isolated and quarantined, but we are not alone.

The church remembers the legends of St. Valentine, a third century bishop who defied imperial orders against marriage. It seemed at

the time that Roman soldiers killed and con-quered better when they were not attached to loved ones at home. Valentine, however, knew there was something vital and sacred about recognizing marriage. He met lovers in secret to help them say their vows. He was eventually imprisoned and killed for it. They say that while awaiting execution, Valentine became friends with the jailer’s family. They wrote notes back and forth, his celebrating the love of his Lord and always signed “Your Valentine.”

We may not be able to gather around pink punch bowls or treat our favorite folk to a nice dinner out, but we are able to celebrate Love today. We can celebrate Valentine’s example and those of others who, like him, challenged the devastating powers of darkness with the light of divine love. In worship, we find ourselves in their ranks, ready to defy evil with the gifts of Love.

The pandemic makes it impossible to do our Valentine’s business as usual, but with God nothing is impossible — and nothing is lost. Even a seemingly cheapened holiday can be transfigured by the wonders of God’s love.

Opening Sentences Heather Mustain

We followed the star. We fell on our knees in awe before the king. We offered our best gifts and the whole experience changed us. It will continue to change us. We gather to worship the Christ — the ever expanding, brightening, and transfiguring Savior who invites us to shine a bit brighter too. Let us follow him still and go where he leads.

Greeting to Worshipers Leanna Coyle-Carr

Epistle Reading — 2 Corinthians 4:3–6 Kevin Cabaniss

And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. In their case the God of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus

Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, “Let light

shine out of darkness,” who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory

of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Gracias a Dios.

You, Lord, are both Lamb and Shepherd.

You, Lord, are both prince and slave.

You, peacemaker and swordbringer

Of the way you took and gave.

You the everlasting instant;

You, whom we both scorn and crave.

Clothed in light upon the mountain,

Stripped of might upon the cross,

Shining in eternal glory,

Beggar’d by a soldier’s toss,

You, the everlasting instant;

You, who are both gift and cost.

You, who walk each day beside us,

Sit in power at God’s side.

You, who preach a way that’s narrow,

Have a love that reaches wide.

You, the everlasting instant;

You, who are our pilgrim guide.

Worthy is our earthly Jesus!

Worthy is our cosmic Christ!

Worthy your defeat and vict’ry.

Worthy still your peace and strife.

You, the everlasting instant;

You, who are our death and life.

Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

You, who are our death and our life.

Prayers of the People Alison Wingfield

Gospel Reading — Mark 9:2–9 Mark Wingfield

Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart,

by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as

no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking

with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings,

one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified.

Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the

Beloved; listen to him!” Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more,

but only Jesus. As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what

they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

This is the Word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

No sabía qué decir,

Gracias a Dios.

Lent 2021 Wilshire Baptist Church

Wilshire will begin the season of Lent with an online Ash Wednesday service on Feb. 17. Led by our pastoral residents, the service will be made available on YouTube at noon and can be watched anytime. A small bag of ashes to self-impose during the service is available to be picked up from the church. It was previously announced that ashes could be picked up during the Koinonia Café To Go pickup times on Feb. 17. Given the cancellation of that day’s meal service (see p. 10), ashes have been placed in a marked container outside the doors near the church office and can be picked up anytime through Feb. 17.

Do you wonder what is waiting for you beyond the wanting? These days, it can feel like our moments of frustration, hurt, loss, desire, disappointment and anxiety have piled up before us to form a mountain of collected grief. Perhaps you also feel a heightened sense of longing to get back to a life you once knew or a life you have envisioned for yourself. In this space, you are free to name your grief and your longing. During this season of Lent, we will explore the wondrous love that sustains us, shelters us, calls us and empowers us as we are dying to live.

In consultation with the COVID-19 Advisory Task Force, Wilshire's education staff has an-

nounced an adaptation to the church's current COVID-19 policy and protocols with a decision to host two ongoing in-person gatherings for youth and children inside the building. Specif-ically, this will apply to Watershed on Wednes-day nights for youth and Sunday Night Live for children.

These initial indoor activities (capped at less than one hour) will provide us an opportunity to gauge safe feasibility for slowly implement-ing future limited small group gatherings. Both events represent small attendance activities that can be enjoyed while well spread out.

Additionally, moving these activities indoors will help overcome two significant challenges for these age groups:

1. The ability to connect meaningfully as vir-tual opportunities remain less effective.

2. The need to continually cancel due to inclement weather.

Rest assured, the safe attendance of our youth and children is of utmost importance to us. Staff is dedicated to ensuring all safety protocols are adhered to during these initial re-emergent activities.

For an updated list of protocols for indoor gatherings, please visit wilshirebc.org/covid.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to Associate Pastors Heather Mustain or Darren DeMent.

Note: The Feb. 14 Sunday Night Live has been rescheduled to Feb. 21 (see page 10).

BY PAULA WOODBURY

Watching Wilshire’s virtual service Sunday, I realized we are nearing one year of

at-home church. I took a moment to reflect on Wilshire’s shift to a new way of worship. Turns out, I have a few observations. I thought I’d share them with you.■ You all have some cute homes and of-

fices. I have enjoyed the voyeuristic peeks I’ve been given into your lives outside the walls of Wilshire. It has given me a sense of hospitality during a time where hospitality is eschewed. I was reminded that it is the people that make Wilshire special, not the building.■ Our faithful lab has attended enough

services now to be considered a full Wilshire member. I regret to inform you that his contributions are as meager as his fetching and listening skills. Having him lounge with us during the services has reminded me that all are welcome at Wilshire (okay, this invitation probably doesn’t extend to stinky old Zeus, but work with me).■ As evidenced by my children, sitting

up is not a requirement for worship. Our couches are overflowing with limbs askew every Sunday. When we return to in-person worship, we are going to need a pew to our-selves, or at least a few extra throw pillows and maybe a blanket. There’s nothing like worship-ing from the couch to remind me that Wilshire is a comfort in scary times.■ Elastic is in; buttons and zippers are,

well, superfluous. I would love to tell you my family and I have kept our tradition of wearing our Sunday best each week, but I would be lying. Dresses and heels have been replaced by yoga pants and house shoes. I anticipate I’ll

need some sort of reentry plan before we re-turn to the Sanctuary full time. Alas, I’ve been reminded that at Wilshire, it’s what inside us all that really matters.■ I’m embarrassed to admit, but I

never knew the musical prowess of Jeff Brummel’s feet until now. Is it just me or is anyone else fascinated watching his feet dance all over that little screen? I’ll never listen to the organ the same again. Worship and music

at Wilshire is a carefully crafted gift to us and I am reminded to be thankful for those who give, full-bodied, to make it beautiful week after week.■ Speaking of that split screen foot

action, how about the video production? I never knew Wilshire had so many cameras. I can only imagine the sweat and tears that go into producing the service every week. In normal circumstances, it’s easy to forget the efforts of those behind the scenes. But it’s hard to miss now, right? I’m reminded of so many people at Wilshire who work tirelessly behind

Virtually the same

“I’m embarrassed to admit, but I never knew the musical prowess of Jeff Brummel’s feet until now.”

13

the scenes every day to keep things running beautifully.■ I care less about the facial hair of our

ministerial staff than I thought. Which is to say (no offense, George), I care not one bit. This season has caused us all to shift and grow in some ways we’ve wanted and others we haven’t. Some changes are visible and some are not. I’m reminded that change is constant and necessary for success, even at church. And that includes allowing for abundant flexibility on my part. So, keep the beard. Or shave it! Because bearded, clean-shaven, male, female, Black, Latinx, straight or gay; these are things that make up my pastor, but do not make my pastor. I’m grateful for a church that works hard for our leaders to represent the entire Kingdom of God.

All humor aside, I know none of this has been what we wanted for worship. Wilshire certainly has been required to quickly adjust and adapt. But, upon reflection, we haven’t truly changed. Like all of us, you may be weary of at-home worship, but do not grow faint, sisters and brothers. While the pews and halls may still be empty, what is most important still stands. If we take a moment to look, we can see it. The foundation upon which this community of faith is built is beautifully, thankfully, still the same.

Thanks be to God.

Pray for Wilshire health care workers

Rapid-response teams availableHealth Response Team is comprised of medical professionals in the church who are willing to make themselves available for general counsel and encouragement. These volunteers are not dis-pensing medical care but are available for general questions and guidance, especially when it may be harder to get to a doctor. Lead contact is Linda Garner, [email protected] or 214-452-3151. Food and Supplies Response Team is comprised of volunteers from our Missions and Ad-vocacy committees who are at the ready to help those who are isolated and need food or other supplies brought to them. We have identified existing designated and budget funds that will be used to meet urgent needs of members, such as food and medicine and limited rent assistance. Lead contact is Heather Mustain, [email protected] or 214-452-3110. Spiritual Support Response Team is comprised of trained lay leaders and staff who are available to talk with members who are lonely, scared or just need to talk during this time of isolation. This is not a substitute for professional counseling. Volunteers will call care receiv-ers on at least a weekly basis to listen to them and offer emotional support. Other referrals for additional identified needs will be made to the appropriate teams or staff. Lead contact is Gail Brookshire, [email protected].

Pray for Wilshire educators

As schools and school districts grapple with the complexities of having school during covid-19, we have compiled a list of Wilshire members who work in education. Keep them in your prayers and consider offering encouragement in the form of a note, email or phone call. We apologize for any omissions; please let us know of names that should be added to the list.
