SOURIS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER http://schools.shmb.ca/sci. Number 11, February 1, 2013 NEWS FROM MR. WILLIAMS Yikes. It has been a cold couple of days. Actually, it has been a cold couple of weeks. I just want to remind you that on a stormy or extremely cold day, tune in to 880 CKLQ AM, 1220 CJRB AM, KX96 FM, HOT 101 FM, 94.7 STAR FM, or CBC to get updates on school closures. We notify these stations about the school closure as soon as the decision is made. School closure information is also placed on the school website at: http://schools.shmb.ca/sci/. The announcement is located on the right hand edge of the page at the very top. As well, we use our Synrevoice phone system to contact all families and staff. We attempt to make a decision to close the school by 6:30 AM. That is not always possible. On days of extreme cold, the Transportation Supervisor makes the decision to close for the entire division. On days when a snowstorm has hit or road conditions are poor the decision is more site-based due to the fact that conditions can differ dramatically from one area of the School Division to another. Yesterday, when the decision was made at 6:30 AM to keep the schools open, the temperature (with windchill) was within the acceptable – but still darn cold - range. It was not until later, between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM that the temperature dropped below the acceptable range. Please remember, that it is always a parental decision as to whether or not to send your child/children to school. If you choose to keep them home, simply contact the school. For your reference you can view the entire weather policy document on the divisional website at: www.shmb.ca Click on “Board Governance”, select “Policy Manual” from the drop down list and view: CBA Procedure – Student Transportation and Inclement Weather, and CBB Procedure - School Closure Exam week is finally over and Term 2 begins on Monday for our high school students. The Gr. 10-12 students kick it off with the annual ski trip to Asessippi on Monday, February 4 th . Please remember to dress appropriately. Have a great week. Once again it is Kindergarten registration time. We encourage people to have their registrations in by February 10 th as Divisional budget numbers are finalized/approved at the end of February. For staffing purposes we need the numbers to be as accurate as possible to ensure that we receive the appropriate numbers of staff for the upcoming year. KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION The school is now accepting registration for Kindergarten students for the 2013-2014 school year. Parents who have children of Kindergarten age are asked to register these children with the school secretary between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday at the school office. Parents are asked to bring their child’s birth certificate when they come to register, so we can make a copy for our files. Children must be five years of age on or before December 31 st , 2013. asked to pass the message on to them to assist with our school planning. CAREER EXPLORATION NEWS Semester 2 will start Monday, February 4. Please come and see me if you would like to make changes or if you would like a copy of your timetable for next semester. If possible, a student can enter a new course within 5 classes of the beginning date. After completion of the 5 classes, entry is not allowed. A course withdrawal can only be made within the first 20 days of class and with a form validated by the teachers’, parent’s/guardian’s and student’s signature. Within the next couple of weeks, I will be meeting with the Grade 12 students individually to do transcript and post-secondary checks. Many post-secondary institutions are holding their 2013 Open Houses for prospective students. University of Manitoba: Wednesday, Feb. 20 & Thursday, Feb. 21, University of Winnipeg: Wednesday, Feb. 20 and Red River College: Tuesday, Feb. 19 & Wednesday, Feb. 20. If any Grade 12 student is seriously considering any of these post secondary institutions, these days are an excellent way to gather valuable information for your fall attendance. Parents and students are encouraged to take part in the interactive tours and special presentations, which are all geared to the success of the future students. Monday, March 4, the Grade 10’s will be attending the Brandon Career Symposium. Students will have the chance to explore potential career and job opportunities. Manitoba’s leading industries, employers, post secondary institutions and trade associations will be on hand to provide factual information. •Mrs. Cynthia Delaurier DRINK TAB TOTAL Cathy Coulthard sent a note to say the tab total is 336,000! She also mentioned that the wedding ring she found in the tabs has

not been claimed yet. You can contact Cathy or the school for more info. Thank you to the Coulthard Family for continuing to collect tabs for such a worthy cause. CONGRATULATIONS HAYDEN! On Monday of this week, 4-H speeches were presented at the Baptist Church. There were many children who worked hard at their speeches and then presented them to parents and friends. Hayden Remillard’s presentation on his family’s Japanese exchange student won first place in his division. Congratulations!

In their second game the girls played the defending 5A champions from Regina, Campbell. The girls were up to the challenge as they displayed some great hustle and play. On Saturday, bright and early, the girls defeated Swan River 46-30 behind Palson's 13 point performance. Then (after a 7 hour wait!) a short-staffed Sabres squad lost a tight battle to Elton 58-48. CAMPBELL’S SOUP “LABELS FOR EDUCATION” THANK YOU to everyone who clips and saves those labels and UPC codes. If you use these products then save those labels – Campbell’s Condensed soup, Chunky soup, Broth, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ramen Hearty Noodles, Ready to serve soup, Habitant, Gardennay, Soup at Hand, V8Soups, Easy cooking sauces along with Prego sauce, V8 Splash/Fusion, Pace Salsa, Goldfish crackers. Collection bins are at the school, Big Way and Robbins Fine Foods. It seems like a lot of work but the labels would be just heading to the garbage anyways. The school appreciates everyone that has supported this program, so keep on saving those labels. Remember, both the label and UPC are needed. •Glenda McConnell
