FC031Art & Design Structured Project 2
Jerry SunT00977402019Tutor: Hannah Whiting
Project Proposal The main concept for my project is textured/ patterned walls in Nottingham. I decided to focus on this idea because the pattern created on the wall were usually interesting to me. When I aimed in the UK Nottingham, I noticed the red brick walls which we don’t have in Hong Kong. It gives me the sense of history due to old buildings and traditional styles.I’m studying decorative arts and would like my outcome to be made from wood, like I did in FC002 with Olivia Peake for my animation background.
I will need to complete research in different styles of walls, the history, trends of 2019, designer research, customer research, technical knowledge. I may have problems in getting materials, tools and access to workshops. I want to develop my ideas in to a product.
Mind Map
Image Board
To start my research I took pictures of different walls in Nottingham. I was interested in the colour of the bricks and the patterns/ texture. Because in Hong Kong it is rare to see the red bricks, they mostly cover them with cement and finish off with big marble tiles.
Image Board 2
I only took these pictures of graffiti because they were inside a tunnel with black lights. When the lights changed the graffiti paintings would change with them. In my project I will research about some wall painting artists.
Ben Tallon- Abstract Urban Illustrator
After doing some research I found out the artist uses a variety of materials, such as pens, inks, brushes, home-made materials and textures, acrylics, spray paint, crayons, wax, and coloured pencils. He specialises in mix media and use Photoshop for the spray effect because it is easier to fix the mistakes. His styles are similar to DADA art movement. His inspiration comes from the environment or what he sees around him.
Invaders - After doing some research I found out the artist use only one material, mosaic colour tiles, cement. He specialises in creating 90s Space Invader arcade video game. He sees his work as Contemporary Art, a Game, Graffiti, also Street Art, and much more. This challenges the way we see art, that art does not just go into one genre. It has unclear limits and questions the way we view art.
This relates to my project because I am doing research about the walls in Nottingham, and around my environments. I have chosen to use skateboard decks with brick wall patterns. Because the patterns represent the streets of nottingham and the boards represent me/ my love of skating.
Week 2 Reflection By completing my artist research I could
● Use markers on a flat surface● I could present my work in a urban area
with the history of the area

Here's why I changed my final project
I decided to change my final project because I did some experiments with the wood and resin, I spent hours trying to unseal the resin and when I thought I did it but I haven’t. There was more layers of dried resin to drill through. At the end I did not have the tools to finish them.
I was on the phone problem solving and glanced at my longboard -(skateboard) and that is when I decided to change my final project. I wanted to make a brick wall pattern canvas with the skateboard decks and finish it with the peace symbol. I have chosen the peace symbol to show peace in my life because 2019 started rough for me.

Design Ideas
I think this is what’s going to happen because…
● The challenge wasn’t the making it was hanging the 3 skateboards together.
● I tried metal wires with hot glue into criss-cross but it was too heavy.
● Tried using a carpet holder to screw it together but I did have a metal drill bits.
● I thought about putting 3 separate shelves.
● I decided to use fishing wire with drawing pins to hang them.
● Another problem was the fishing wire was stretching because it was too heavy.
Variables that may affect the outcome...
● I tried different ways to presenting my work.
● I learned how to find a solution for my problems.
● I didn’t give up, just kept moving forward, and stay calm, slow and steady wins the race.
● By planning my time and giving myself a goal, I didn’t need to rush at the end.
● I gave myself time to do everything step by step.
● If I had more time I would paint the peace sign with a paintball gun for the paint splash effect.
