INTRODUCTION;

As the following Carols have been arrangedexpressly for companies of ringers whose bells areof a limited number, it cannot be expected, nor isit even possible to produce a fully harmonisedaccompaniment. For that purpose a set of bellscomprising not less than three or four octaves,chromatically arranged, would be necessary, theringers having a thorough knowledge of either theOld Notation, or Tonic-solfa system of music.Instead of resorting to the use of figures, acompany of ringers are then in a position to orderfrom any music-publisher such pieces as they maydesire, and play them in their proper written key,the compass of bells affording sufficient scope foradding the Alto, Tenor and Bass parts. It mustbe understood, however, that every endeavour hasbeen made to make the following melodies as harmonious as possible, and a little careful study willsoon overcome seeming difficulties, ending in theproduction of some very pleasing and effectiveresults. One thing is certain, that by the j,ntroduction of a little harmony, both performers andbells will be more fully employed, instead of (as isoften the case) one or more of the company standingwith bells in hand absolutely doing nothing, the·rendering of certain tunes only calling their servicesinto requisition at lengthy intervals.

TESTIMONIAL FROM DR. MARTIN.

4, AMEN COU llT, ST. PA UL'S, E.C. .* "Unquestionably this is l\ book of great importance t o all who are '

interested in Hymn Tune Chi ruing. No less than 144 Tunes have been setout for peals of bells ranging from five to twelve. It is presumed that theohiming apparatus (which is an arrangement for bringing a peal of bells underthe control of one person) is in use. The tunes are printed in bellringers'nomenclature-that is, figures, beginning with 1 for the treble,bell , and so on.The method of st:ttiug out is very much aft er the Tonic Sol-fa prlnciple, andthe introductory di rections ar e both ample and clear .

"In my opinion the book will become a standard on its suhject."

GEORGE C. ' MARTIN,

O,·ganilWSt. Paut:« Oathedral, Londo«.
