OVERVIEW

Biscom’s FAXCOM Epic Integration enables users to send faxes and check fax status from

within the Epic EMR. Fax traffic is much easier to manage as all sent faxes are stored in

folders corresponding to departments and failed faxes can be easily identified and resent.

Medical professionals can leverage faxing without having to resort to slow and error-prone

manual workarounds. Biscom worked closely with Epic to directly integrate the two platforms

to provide this powerful and unique functionality.

EPIC FAXING

Biscom spoke extensively with healthcare market leaders to understand what fax

functionality could be added to Epic to maximize its value. With these customer

requirements, Biscom worked with Epic to integrate the two market-leading solutions.

Now the functionality of the award-winning FAXCOM Enterprise fax solution is

integrated directly with Epic.

HOW IT WORKS

With Biscom’s integration, users can send faxes faster from within the Patient Record in

Epic. When a fax is sent, a confirmation status is returned to the Patient Record.

Metadata from Epic is appended to each fax and then this is stored.

The FAXCOM Epic Integration is key to finding and managing all your fax traffic more

securely and efficiently. With this integration, the additional metadata is used to route

faxes to folders for each department. By organizing by department, medical

professionals can only see faxes from their department mitigating exposure to non-

approved PHI. They can also search using metadata to find specific faxes and quickly

determine which faxes have failed, the reason for the failure, and resend.

If a fax fails to be transmitted by the fax server (or fax hosted service), the Patient

Record is updated with a ‘failed’ message. The attached Epic metadata is used to route

the failed fax to a specific department’s fax folder and inform the user. There is no need

to dedicate valuable resources to monitor Epic’s “Failed-Fax Folder” and blindly search

for faxes—wasting time and potentially exposing PHI. Now users can go directly into

their department’s fax folder, quickly find the fax, get detailed failure information, and

re-send it using the FAXCOM client.

Finally, the FAXCOM Epic Integration also allows organizations to send faxes faster. This is accomplished as the Biscom integration allows

medical professionals to send faxes without having to wait for the status to be updated in Epic.

INBOUND FAXING

Inbound faxes can be routed based on the fax number, barcode, or caller ID. Faxes are then automatically delivered to inbound-fax

folders on the customer’s network as either a Tiff, PDF or searchable PDF image. An Epic approved document management solution

will scan the folder to import the fax into the solution and attach a link to the appropriate patient record within Epic.

MAXIMIZE THE VALUE OF EPIC

Biscom’s FAXCOM Epic Integration helps organizations maximize the value of their Epic EMR solution. With this integration, medical

professionals can fax from within Epic, quickly identify and resend failed faxes, and organize fax traffic by department. Other fax solutions

that integrate with Epic do not have this functionality and level of integration.

By integrating Biscom’s faxing capabilities with Epic, medical professionals will maximize value through:

Simplifying Fax for the Doctor

Now medical professionals can fax and see the status in Epic. There are no new systems to learn, no confusion as to how to send a

fax, and no issues with user adoption.

Managing Faxes

Organizing, isolating, and managing faxes is simpler with the FAXCOM Epic Integration. With this integration, organizations can

deploy fax folders for each department. This means that faxes from each department are grouped together, making it easier to

manage sent faxes by departments.

Automating Manual Workarounds

FAXCOM Epic Integration users don’t have to go outside the system to fax, avoiding errors that can be introduced with manual fax

processing and potential HIPAA compliance issues.

Eliminating Process Delays

Getting the right diagnosis quickly can make a huge difference in treatment success. With integrated faxing using Biscom, Epic users

no longer have to waste time printing, scanning, faxing, and entering data. All those tasks can be automated. Faxes are also sent

more quickly as users don’t need to wait for Epic to update.

Improving PHI Security

Printing, manual faxing, and scanning are all areas where PHI can be exposed. HIPAA can also be violated if, in searching for faxes,

the user is exposed to non-authorized PHI. But with the FAXCOM Epic Integration, medical professionals don’t need to manually

process information keeping everything secure and HIPAA compliant.
