This year’s session of Annual Conference was curiously refreshing. We met May 23-25 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds with a theme of “Vital Congregations: Dynamic Worship.”

A variety of worship experiences characterized our time together, including some powerful preaching by Bishop Gregory Palmer who preached at the Service of Commissioning and Ordination that took place on Wednesday evening.

Having spent eleven days at General Conference in Tampa, Florida, it was refreshing to meet for only three days. Moreover, it was good to discuss issues and to make decisions without the subterfuge or political maneuvering.

The issue that commanded the most attention was the recommendation for us to become one Annual Con-ference, comprised of three current conferences—Kansas West, Kansas East, and Nebraska. Generally speak-ing, we were able to ask our questions and to make our speeches without resorting to accusation or innuendo. We could disagree without being disagreeable. We could speak to one another rather than about one another.

Our conversation was generally healthy and constructive. We will find out about becoming one conference on Saturday, June 9, after the Kansas East Conference and the Nebraska Conferences have also voted.

There were other factors that made this a good conference. There were more clergy that were commis-sioned, recognized, or ordained than were retired this year. That is a pleasant change from the direction we have moved in recent years.

We were blessed by the visit of eight clergy and laity from Zimbabwe, who helped us to experience the “joy of the Lord.”

And then there were babies! We have a crop of younger clergy—including several clergy couples—who have infants under a year of age. One baby was baptized as part of the Service of Commissioning and Ordina-tion. This helped remind all of us that our call to ministry is based in our baptism. The presence of these little ones helped to bring a perspective that was refreshing for those of us who are “old” or “oldish!”

And so, despite the fatigue of three long days of meetings, we were refreshed and renewed for another year of service!

Grace and Peace, Mark Conard

In this church, in the presence of God; you can be who you are; you can be any way you are; and you can be loved. 3

Last month (May 8th) would have been my Father’s 100th birthday; I was overwhelmed with thoughts of him. Last month (May 6th) would have been my brother’s 60th birthday; I was overwhelmed with thoughts of him. Last month, (May 13th) was Mother’s Day …..my first without her; I was overwhelmed with

thoughts of her. How could one month be so full of reflection and emotion? But, in all those overwhelming thoughts, there was nothing negative – only love and thankfulness. I remembered, not too many months ago, when someone came to visit my Mother with a prayer shawl. My eyes filled with tears as this person placed it on my Mother’s shoulders and read: "This shawl was prayerfully handmade by a member of the Moundridge United Methodist Church. It was blessed by our Pastor. We prayed for you before you received this, we pray for you now, Dorothy Rishel, and we will continue to pray for you." The Church loved my Mother. I loved my Father, my brother and my Mother. While the memories were painful; they were also comfort-ing. The bottom line is LOV E – God loves us all and we can choose to remain in that love by the actions we choose and the way we live our lives. We can have complete joy! Last month was tough, but I have complete joy, because of the love I’ve been given – from God, my family and you!

Blessings, Jeanine Rishel, Assistant Pastor

Lay and clergy members of the Kansas West Conference gathered May 23-25 at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson for the 2012 annual con-ference session and voted on business items and re-ports. The theme was “Vital Congregations: Dynam-ic Worship.” Bishop Gregory Palmer was the guest speaker.

Eight clergy and laity from Zimbabwe were guests at the Annual Conference, having itinerated throughout the six different districts for two weeks beforehand. They offered a time of teaching and cel-ebration as part of their presence among us.

There was a report about General Conference from the delegates who attended.

The proposal of the Nebraska-Kansas Episcopal Transition Team to merge the Kansas West, Kansas East and Nebraska conferences into one new confer-ence was voted upon May 24. The voting results will be revealed, along with the results of the other two conferences, on June 9.

A budget of $5.9 million was adopted for 2013, with more than $ 1 million provided by earnings on the non-budget account managed by the Conference Board of Pensions.

A new apportionment formula was approved. It will be based on receipts for local church budgetary purposes rather than on expenditures.

New superintendents were introduced for two districts—the Rev. Linda Louderback for the Wichi-ta West district and the Rev. Dennis Livingston for the Hutchinson District.

Four churches were discontinued: Alexander, Herington, Linn, and Salina-Quayle.

There were six new “provisional elders,” and ten persons were received as deacon (1) or elder (9). There were ten retirements.

The Rev. Mark Conard and Shirley Nelson at-tended this session of Annual Conference on behalf of First United Methodist Church.

“You have fixed all the bounds of the earth; you made summer and winter.” Psalm 74:17 (NRSV) As summer approaches, more outdoor activities are available for individuals and families. Playing in the park, walking in the neighborhood, and swim-ming at the local pool are just three such options for everyone. Enjoy the summer and remember to take the proper safety precautions. The three most im-portant are to drink lots of water; to wear light, breathable clothing; and to wear sunscreen and avoid being in the sun when the sun’s rays are most direct. Drinking water and wearing light-colored cotton or other absorbent material helps the body cool, pre-venting heat-related illnesses. Limiting sun expo-sure may prevent skin cancer. Care for the body and have fun this summer with family and friends. Pastor’s 64th Birthday

The Rev. Mark Conard will turn 64 years of age on June 22. He invites members and friends of the congregation to make a contribution in honor of his birthday that would go

for the work of the United Methodist Committee on Relief. This is one of his favorite giving opportuni-ties, and he hopes that people might consider such a gift.

Financial contributions in honor of his birthday can be made to the church with the designation “Pastor’s Birthday” or “UMCOR.”

Thanks in advance for your thoughtfulness and generosity!

Peace with Justice Sunday

Peace with Justice Sunday was Sunday, June 3, at First United Methodist Church. It is one of six “Special Sundays with Offering” that we observe throughout the year. The purpose of Peace with Jus-tice Sunday is to “call the church to action for peace with justice.”

Our special gifts on Peace with Justice Sunday, the first Sunday after Pentecost, allows The United Methodist Church to advocate for peace and justice through a broad range of programs. In 2011, the peo-ple of First United Methodist Church contributed $191.09 for this purpose. If you were unable to attend the service, you may still make a contribution. Please write on the memo line of your check “Peace With Justice”.

You’re Invited! Please take a few moments to tie a knot on the

Prayer Quilt that may be found in the church’s entry way. It is placed there by the Sew ‘n’ Sews.

The invitation is for you to stop a tie a knot on the quilt while saying a prayer for someone special in your life or someone you may not know but who needs your thoughts and prayers.

Weekly sessions of Confir-mation Class are now being held. Leadership is provided by Rev. Mark Conard, Lisa Dale, Kim Peirce, and Jeff Graber. The young people involved are learning to “Claim the Name,” including ♦ Who They Are ♦ Who Jesus Is ♦ Being a Christian ♦ Being United Methodist ♦ Membership Matters

Those completing the course and deciding to be-come members of the church will be confirmed and received into membership on Sunday morning, July 1.

A Summer Prayer* by James Vanden Bosch

God of creation, God of the seasons, bless your creatures with seasons of delight. Lord of the Sab-bath, you have established the rhythms of life, estab-lish in us also the rhythms for human prospering; grant us the good sense to enjoy Sabbath rest in this season.

Grant us, moreover, wisdom to know that there is a time to play, a time to cease from our labors, a time to sense majesty in a blue sky, richness in green grass, love in faithful friends, and joy in our being. Grant us, then, blue skies this summer, and green grass; grant us faithful friends and the time, strength, and spirit for play. Grant us the wit to know the goodness of this creation, which, blind, de-fiant, or ungrateful, we despoil. Send our roots rain; our hearts ease, so that we may show in our lives that we can live rightly in this season of our lives and see it as if for the first time, in wonder, in awe, and in a spirit of thanksgiving. Amen.
