Ghost Acoustics is a sonic act of disparate works from the studio of AKVK – Steve Bates, Joshua Bonnetta and Douglas Moffat. Beginning with Julian Biggs’ 1964 film 23 Skidoo, the FOFA Gallery becomes the site for an exploded studio of works listening to phantom sounds in film, cities and transmissions. The studio of AKVK presents a five-week exhibition with accompanying performances, film screenings and workshops. Formed from the constructive interference within the practices of three Montreal-based artists, this exhibition features multiple works that lay bare the material nature of the immaterial practices of sound, time, and transmission. For more information on Ghost Acoustics, including concurrent programming that includes film screenings, workshops and performances, visit http://fofagallery.concordia.ca

UNIVERSITY OF THE STREETS CAFE Tuesday, February 23 • 7 to 9pm Salon b. Bibliocafé • 4231 b Saint-Laurent (@Rachel) Living in Transition: When beginning something new, how do you take the first step? The unexpected may face us at every corner - be it the death of a loved one, a new career opportunity or personal epiphanies which inspire us to reconsider all that we once were. Making sense of this complex tapestry requires the grace and care necessary to make difficult choices - either by moving into action and meeting what lies ahead or in deciding to step away from an existing connection. In this second conversation of two, we will explore our relationship to beginning - the intimidating first step, accessible enough to lie just outside our front door, yet clearly outside of our comfort zone. Whether it's sending in a job application, telling someone you have a crush on them, picking up a new book or starting on a bicycle ride to a new part of town, beginnings are full of promise. When compared to the humdrum of the inaction in life, why does the 'first step' toward something new scare us so much? Guest: Kit Malo is a stubborn donkey who has been a community organizer, curator, producer and artist in the Montreal creative scene for some while. A self-identified and proud jack-of-all-trades, Malo has worked as a bookkeeper, systems operator and arts director for organizations such as Head and Hands, Drawn & Quarterly, Pop Montreal and the 2110 Centre. Kit's one true, passionate interest in the life of sea creatures does not go undiminished despite this finger-in-many-pots approach to life. Moderator: Alex Megelas is a facilitator in personal and organizational change and is first and foremost interested in dialogue as a necessary foundation to growth. As a certified life coach, Alex is interested in considering how individuals are affected by, and can significantly shape, their environment. As an organizational change consultant, he has worked on a number of issues including: conflict mediation, strategic planning and participatory planning. He currently works with the Center for Community Organizations (COCo). The University of the Streets Café creates gathering places for citizens to pursue lifelong learning and engagement through public

These private projections are at a special group rate ($10 per person from 20 to 50 people / from 50 to 75 people: $500 + $10 additional person), you can choose the films that you wish to be screened, organize discussions and eventually have the opportunity to encounter producers of certain films. The International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) is a non-profit organization devoted to the worldwide promotion and presentation of films on art and media art. Its central activity is an eleven-day competitive festival, the most important event of its kind in the world. FIFA has become a mecca for artists and artisans from the art and film communities, as well as for art and cinema enthusiasts.

HOMO FABER EXPERIMENTAL THEATRE PIECE Want to see something Experimental?... Homo Faber is an experimental media-enhanced theatrical performance that juxtaposes the inner organic mechanisms of the human body with the organs of social reproduction

(which in turn produce the body from without). The performance takes place in the context of a factory resonating with the slogans and arguments of a corporate video. The factory is inhabited by automaton humans conditioned by the mechanisms of production. A strange and troubling tension surfaces between the mechanical and the organic, the oneirical and the real, but also between the organism and the disease that obscure’s its future. Incorporating mechanized set design, live video and audio manipulation, and interactivity between the performers movements and their environment, Homo Faber nevertheless develops a symbolic universe that stimulates philosophical reflection.
