25th April 2017 Issue 8 2016/2017 Farlingaye HIGH SCHOOL Head’s Message As we move through from the spring term into the summer term, it is perhaps a good time to reflect on what the months of April and May have traditionally been seen to provide - rebirth, renewal, and the opportunity to refresh nature’s energies for the seasons ahead. For us, those seasons include the most challenging of all: exam season! As Y11, 12 and 13 students gear up for the final push towards their assessments, I would like to wish them all the best of luck, and to encourage them to prepare as well as they possibly can. The students can be sure that the staff at Farlingaye will be with them all the way, to the last second of the last exam. The letter that is traditionally sent to all Y11 families, detailing the revision and exam preparation sessions available throughout the exam period, will be sent out soon. Please do look out for this and go through it carefully with your child to ensure they make the most of the many opportunities that will be provided. As you will have noted, Farlingaye High School is considering joining together with several of our local partner primary schools to form a Multi-Academy Trust (MAT). The drive behind this development is the desire on the part of all of the schools to make the best possible use of the opportunities we have for collaboration, so that we can create additional benefits for each school and for the whole of the local community. I would be delighted to see you at the MAT Families Consultation Meeting that will take place on 2 nd May, at 5.30, in the Sixth Form Common Room, where you will have an opportunity to hear more information about the MAT proposals and what they would mean for Farlingaye, and to ask any questions that you have. At Farlingaye, we are aware that good communication between the school and families and other stakeholders, as well as with the wider world, is vital. To facilitate this, we will soon be launching our new website. The website has been redesigned to improve navigation and the users’ experience, and to better represent the work of the school. We will be updating pathways and content throughout the website in due course. I would like to draw your attention to the school’s involvement with Give as you Live. The Give as you Live initiative creates opportunities for valuable community-minded fundraising. Farlingaye will benefit if our families sign up and use Give as you Live, using the following link: http://www.farlingaye.suffolk.sch.uk/News/Give-as-you-Live/. Speaking of community involvement, I would like to express my appreciation of the Friends of Farlingaye High School for organising and running a very successful and enjoyable Band Night at the school on Saturday 22 nd April. Every bit of your input helps to build who we are as a school, and we thank you for it. HOWZAT!! Farlingaye become double County Champions in girls’ cricket! On Friday March 24th, Farlingaye U13 and U15 ladies’ cricket team took part in the Lady Taverner’s Indoor County Finals. On the way to the finals, both teams had overcome extremely strong Ipswich School sides in the South Suffolk round. It meant that the Farlingaye teams were now the teams to watch. The U13 side competed in the morning. A comfortable victory against Debenham in the first game got the team off to a fantastic start. The next game against Horringer Court was to be the girls’ toughest. The team really rose to the challenge, protecting an under par total with excellent bowling and fielding, winning the game by nine runs. Now the team were up against St Jo’s. Batting first, the girls put in a massive 125 runs from just 40 balls. Another comfortable victory against Thurston followed and the girls had won the County Championship, and will move on to the regional round on Tuesday April 25th. It was a real team effort from the girls and an achievement they should be very proud of. The U15 side arrived just as the U13 side were collecting the winners’ trophy, so all the pressure was on them to try to repeat the success . The first game was against Newmarket and it was a game that ended up being a comfortable victory. The very next game was against County Upper. The girls ‘upped’ their game when it really mattered and County Upper really did not get close to the 116 runs needed to win. The final was against Holbrook, who were a very competitive side. Good batting in the seventh over meant the girls were eight short going into the final over. Boom! Ellie Richards stepped up to hit the very first ball of the over for six, then some excellent running on the very next ball won the game, and the girls could run onto the pitch to celebrate. A nail biting final but the U15s were joining the U13s at the regional finals. Well done girls! The regional finals will take place on April 25th and 27th in Leicester Sports Hall. Mr Brooks

What a picture On Tuesday March 28th and Wednesday 29th, we welcomed over 240 students from seven of our feeder primary schools to take part in the annual Choral Concert. With 250 Farlingaye students also taking part, the stage was packed with amazing talent. The age of the performers ranged from six to 18, with all the performers singing and dancing to a wide range of music from “You Can’t Get a Man with a Gun” to “The Nights” by Avicii and “True Colours”. All the performances were accompanied by students in various instrumental groups including a rousing Big Band. The Sports Hall had been turned into a fantastic auditorium by the stage crew, consisting of students. It was filled to capacity on both nights with an enthralled audience who were swaying to the music in their seats. Everyone was left stunned by the Finale, “Flash Bang Wallop”, performed by nearly 500 students, which left the audience wanting to see and hear more.

New Website Farlingaye High School has the great pleasure of announcing the imminent launch of our new look Web Site! The overall content will not change a great deal, except through a process of updating. Over the next couple of months we will be reorganising the navigation of the website to make it more streamlined and in the long term easier to navigate. This project has taken several months to create during which time it was our goal to produce a website which would be visually pleasing, interesting, enjoyable to browse through and last but not least a web site that would reflect the standards that Farlingaye promotes for its pupils. We hope this new site will be of great benefit to all. To coincide with the launch of the website we have also launched our own Farlingaye App. Our website is frequently updated to keep you informed with news, dates and other important information. To ensure you have even easier access to this information we are pleased to launch our mobile app. The Farlingaye app allows parents to keep up to date with all the latest news, dates, photo galleries, newsletters and letters home all in one handy place on your phone. Parents can also receive push notifications from the school and subscribe to alert groups. The app is free to download so please give it a try! The app is available via the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Year 10 Tech Trip – London On Friday March 17th, over 80 Year 10 Technology students visited the V&A and Science Museums to kick start their controlled assessment. The chance for students to immerse themselves in design styling and to see design classics up close forms a key marker in their progression from practice projects to actual GCSE work. The day went quickly with a lunch break on the steps of the Prince Albert memorial opposite the Albert Hall. The students took plenty of photographs and the gift shops made a bumper profit that day! Book Reviews ‘Shadow’ by Michael Morpurgo (Review by Sophie Willsher, 7I) Shadow by Michael Morpurgo is my favourite book! It’s about Shadow (a dog) and Aman, sneaking into England. They come from a dangerous country where terrorists are everywhere. They have already been robbed and Aman’s father and grandma have been killed. Will they get to England safely? ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio (Review by Olivia Russell & Jenna Oxbury, 7I) This heart-warming, inspirational tale is full of unexpected twists worth experiencing through August’s year at middle-school. Is his facial deformity stopping people from seeing the real August? Low self-esteem causes him to feel like he doesn’t fit. It makes you realise just what it is to be a friend.

Bad Hair Day 2017 Well done everyone who took part in Bad Hair Day this year. As a school we raised an amazing £1,317.77! This will go directly towards enabling Great Ormond Street Hospital to continue providing world-class care to its patients, and their families.

CISCO Little BIG Awards Final On Thursday March 16th, March, Joash Jennis, Barney Barnes, Tristan Whittle and Harry Lansley all of Year 7, attended the CISCO Little BIG awards national finals in London. The students had to present to an esteemed panel of professors, doctors and company executives as well as discuss their idea at a trade stand. After a tour of the high tech facility and lunch, the students were treated to demonstrations of cutting edge technology from industry experts. In the afternoon the winners from each category were named along with the overall winners, and to our delight Farlingaye took home the trophy! The students each received £100 amazon vouchers and the school will now benefit from linking with CISCO for a year of outreach programmes. Harry Lansley said “It was a nerve raking moment when the judges were announcing the winners of the awards. All the days, weeks and months of preparation came down to this one moment…Then the head judge announced us as winners! This whole experience has made me even more interested in the technology industry, furthermore I am now much more knowledgeable in Business and Technology after the CISCO Little Big Awards.” Mr Hawtin

Year 9 First Aid Training In March, every student in Year 9 was lucky enough to receive first aid training. Ken Hawley, from First Aid Suffolk www.firstaidsuffolk.co.uk, came into school throughout the week to instruct individual classes on first aid and CPR. Firstly, the students practised getting an unconscious casualty into the recovery position for their safety. Then they were shown when it was appropriate to do CPR, and how to do it correctly. They could work on life like mannequins to perfect their technique. Some of the models even lit up to show blood flow if they got it right. The class then went on to cover choking, how to differentiate between partial and full choking and what to do. They had a different mannequin to work on this time. It was a heavy torso of a man, with an open mouth. An obstruction was forced into his mouth and the students had to try to dislodge it, first with back thumps and then abdominal thrusts. If they were successful the obstruction flew out. It was a very exciting and informative lesson, from which the students will take away very useful knowledge. “On the first aid lesson I learned loads about first aid training and the experience was great. This first aid was very important to me as well as other people because it meant that we could possibly save someone’s life in the future.” Izaak De May

German creative writing competition success The East of England German Network, which is based at Farlingaye High School, ran its first creative writing competition this year, with the friendly support of the Schroeder Fund, Department of German and Dutch, University of Cambridge. The judges were impressed by the quality of the entries and we are proud to announce this year’s winners. 1st Prize - Kian Moghaddas, Norwich School 2nd Prize – Darcey Jessup – Farlingaye High School 3rd Prize - Arjun Kamath, Norwich School Mrs Green

German A-Level Conference at the UEA On March 24th, a group of Year 12 and 13 students of German attended the UEA's first German A-Level conference, which was also the official launch event of our UEA Think German Network. The UEA's Council Chamber opened its doors to these German linguists, their teachers and a small group of undergraduate students. They explored the role of Germany in Europe past and present, celebrated the importance of the German language in the world of work and to took part in a range of translation workshops, one of which was run by former Farlingaye High School student Emma Boon. Farlingaye High School works closely with this new initiative. If you work for a company in the East of England which has links to Germany, Bettina Pfeiffer, the network’s coordinator would like to hear from you, as she is currently building up a database of employers at the University of East Anglia. https://ueathinkgerman.org/contact/ Mrs Green
