The Far South Coast is one of NSW's best spots to go whale watching, with humpbacks and southern right whales, dwarf minkes, and even the occasional orca and blue whale hugging the coast as they migrate south. Following are tour operators from Eden to Narooma who can get you out amongst the whales. Starting in the south at Eden is Cat Balou, celebrating their 23rd whale watching season this year. This makes owners Gordon and Ros Butt the most experienced whale watching operators in NSW. See page 5 for details on Cat Balou's whale watching cruises.Next port of call is Merimbula where you'll find Headland Fishing Charters and Merimbula Marina.Locals Joe and Andrew Gatt of Headland Fishing Charters offer whale watching cruises on their boat Jadele 11, which carries 12 passengers plus Joe and Andrew. Plenty of personal attention is guaranteed as you cruise Merimbula Bay and beyond tracking whales. See page 13
for Headland Fishing Charters' contact details. Merimbula Marina (and Headland Fishing) are both centrally located in Merimbula on the jetty opposite the Lakeview Hotel. Merimbula Marina offer a range of whale watching cruises aboard the True Blue, a 16m SeaCat purpose built for whale
watching. Mothers and their calves can often be seen playing in Merimbula Bay.Island Charters Narooma offer whale watching cruises from September to November for those further north. From Narooma it's a quick trip out to spot whales as they migrate south - see below.
Would you like to see whales, dolphins, fur seals
and thousands of seabirds –all in one trip?
Then head up to Naroomaand out to Montague Island!
Take a tour of the islandto see little penguins as well.
Maybe snorkel with the seals-the puppies of the sea!
With 13 years experience, we know how to provide friendly, professional service and memories to treasure. Call Kathie or Martin on 0408428857 max.12 passengers

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.
Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.
A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.
For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. In 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic
buildings and farmhouses. Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs. It's a great place to shop for something a bit different. At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a fantastic community conservation and heritage project that has transformed this part of Pambula over the past 10 years. Covering former farmland, areas of saltmarsh, billabongs and the former Pambula Racecourse, the area has been extensively re-planted and has great walking and cycling tracks. The old race track is a great spot for the kids to cycle around, with the centre of the track often inhabited by kangaroos.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park. Pambula Beach has an excellent
swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth is great for families.Heading south toward Eden turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too, including Broadwater Oysters.

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.
Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.
In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.
The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.
There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.
Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkeling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.
Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee.
Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme.
For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June.
Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

Up close and personal at Potoroo PalacePotoroo Palace's baby Koala, Sapphire, has graduated to an adult. But, say the keepers at the wildlife park, she's very "un-koala". She doesn't sleep as much as Koalas normally do - about 20 hours a day. lnstead she waits for visitors and puts on her unique "leaping,, show."She's more like a monkey," says Head Keeper Vicki Mcpaul. "A very cheeky monkey.,,Both she and Evo, a smaller northern koala, enjoy cuddles from the keepers while meeting anyone who comes to visit. Koala pats for everyone are usually the order of the day. Both Priscilla the short-beaked echidna, and Luna, the albino echidna, are also very fond of meeting people and squinting at them. Just remember there's only one direction to stroke an echidna!Potoroo Palace is just 9km north of Merimbula on the Princes Hwy, and includes walk-through aviaries (where you can try and out-stare, up-close, Tawny the tawny frogmouth), dingos, kangaroos who love being fed and scratched, the new flying foxes, young emus, potoroos, pythons, and train rides."We enjoy making things special for our visitors," says Keeper Alexandra Seddon.

What to See & Do Check out the view and spot whales
from the Headland lookout Enjoy the walk from Tathra to the
mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka Explore the Bega River by boat Pedal around the 40 km of
mountain bike track
With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.
Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing.
Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale migrating south from September to November.
Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-
biking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.
There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.
An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.
Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at
Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.
Tathra also has great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants.

From Tathra, head back toward Bega on the Snowy Mountains Highway, and turn right into Thompsons Drive. The car park on the right marks the start of the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve.
This 60 hectare wildlife corridor provides habitat for a range of fauna species, including glossy black-
cockatoos, listed as a threatened species. These rare birds feed on the black sheoaks (Allocasuarina litoralis) found in coastal forests, and build nests in the hollows of old or dead trees.
The Main Ridge Track passes through coastal rainforest down to a secluded wetland, with a variety of waterbirds,
frogs and water dragons.
Continue through the Reserve until you reach Dilkerra Rd; follow this until you reach the famous Tathra beach, winner of the 2008 NSW Clean Beach Award.
The walk takes about 45 minutes one way, and is graded as easy - medium.
Enjoy bushwalking in the Tathra Forest Wildlife Reserve

Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.
The dairy industry has always played
a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors

The Spires Nursery
Well, spring is well and truly with us and what a blessing it is after a cold and dry winter in most areas.Travelling around the countryside in my endeavours to source the more rare and unusual plants for our nursery, it has been an absolute pleasure to see all the beautiful Spring flowering trees in full bloom. Given that we have not had that much rain, the blossoms have not been spoilt, and are hanging on the trees a lot longer.Sourcing trees at this time of the year will probably mean purchasing potted specimens, as it is now too late to plant bare rooted trees, as new root growth will have started and the tiny new roots can be damaged in the transplanting process. This time of the year is a great time to buy them as they will be in leaf and you can be guaranteed that they have broken out of their dormant stage. There are several species that are suited to the home garden situation; following
are a few suggestions.Flowering plums (Prunus cerasifera nigra and Prunus pissardi) are a lovely addition as most have either single or double pink blossom followed by dark purple foliage that stay with the tree to the following Autumn.Crab apples (Malus) are another beautiful group that have gorgeous flowers including single and double forms and from white through darker shades of pink. The added bonus of some varieties is the lovely coloured fruits that appear after flowering. The larger fruiting forms are suited to making crab apple jelly.Deciduous magnolias are one of my favourites. These plants do require a little bit of protection from hot summer winds but can be shaped into a lovely small tree. Again there are many varieties available in white, pink and dark pink. There are some more unusual varieties available including yellow and
star shaped flowers. The list could go on forever, so a trip to your local nursery to check out what is available is a good idea.Use the variety you have selected as the upper storey in your garden and underplant with plants that like summer shade and full sun in the cooler months. Remember, to have a plant start off its journey through life, the most important thing to do is commence with good soil preparation.Dig a hole that is wide and not too deep and include some compost or a commercial planting mixture (not potting mix) into the soil you have dug out. Also, even if it is raining when you do your planting, water the plant to settle it in.

The Dromedary HotelIf you’re spending time in Central Tilba, drop in to the Dromedary Hotel and “have a cold one” in the historic atmosphere of an original country pub. The pub was one of the first buildings constructed in the village, and was originally run as a coffee palace. Operating as a hotel since 1896, the “Drom” has a long tradition of hospitality that is still evident today.Like many of the original buildings in Central Tilba, the "Drom" was built from timber, no doubt supplied by one of the local sawmills. A testament to the durability of hardwood, the "Drom" is a fantastic example of 1890s architecture.Located right in the centre of the National Trust-classified village, the "Drom" has accommodation available, making it a perfect base to explore the town, with everything located within easy walking distance. With cold beers on tap, delicious lunches and dinners available and a great verandah, the Dromedary Hotel is the perfect spot to while away a sunny afternoon. Sometimes on a Sunday there's live entertainment in the afternoon - check with the Hotel to see who's playing when. The Hotel is open 7 days a week, so drop in and say hello. The Dromedary Hotel - Bate St, Central Tilba. What to See & Do Stroll along the banks of the
beautiful Moruya River
Find the hand-carved poles situated along the length of the main street
Enjoy the fantastic Moruya Country Markets, held every Saturday at Riverside Park
Drive to beautiful Broulee Beach and wander across the permanent sand bar to complete the Broulee Island Walk
The township of Moruya has beautifully preserved heritage buildings and streetscapes and is a great place to explore.
It’s famous for supplying the granite used in the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW, the Cenotaph in Martin Place and the statue of Captain James Cook in Sydney's Botanic Gardens.
These days however, Moruya is known for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.
Moruya has a great array of specialty shops for those looking for something a little bit different. Fantastic cafes, restaurants and hotels with live music can also be found in this bustling little country town.
Moruya has a thriving arts community, with exhibitions frequently held at the Mechanics Institute.
Every year there are a number of festivals held, including the River of Art, Eurobodalla Slow Food and Moruya Jazz Festivals. See the article below for all the Jazz Festival details.
www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
Patrons of the 2012 Moruya Jazz Festival are spoilt for choice with three outstanding headliners this year. A major coup is the Ernesto Cervini Quartet (ECQ), which is making the only NSW appearance of its Australian tour at Moruya. This quartet is a cross-pollination of the best jazz musicians from two of North America's most vibrant scenes...New York City and Toronto. They have been playing extensively across North America and Europe for the past 5 years, and have recently released their 3rd album. The Quartet has earned a reputation as one of North America’s most exciting modern jazz groups, however their music covers the whole spectrum of jazz, so their appeal is universal. The Moruya Jazz Festival Committee acknowledges the assistance of Regional Arts NSW Country Arts Support Program, Southern Phone and South Coast Beverages in bringing ECQ to Moruya. Also playing throughout the festival is long term favourite George Washingmachine, with a new band Feel The Manouche. George tells us that
Manouche is a term derived from the Romany gypsies of Europe; what we call gypsy jazz. This fine band has been put together as an exercise in small group swing. Feel the Manouche has a 'world music' feel. Through its use of double bass, guitar, accordion and fiddle, the band achieves a strong melodic groove that can take on gypsy waltzes, swing jazz, choro and many other flavours of music from our diverse planet. The Festival also features two special guest appearances by another favourite, Jan Preston, Queen of the Boogie Woogie. Known as Australia's Queen of the Boogie Piano, she has a reputation as a magnetic live performer, and her renditions of original piano boogie compositions and songs, as well as tunes such as the ‘Black and White Rag’ and ‘Bumble Boogie’ are astonishing. Jan’s vocals and Boogie Woogie piano will be backed by Mike Pullman on percussion, and Moruya Jazz Festival’s Music Director and founder of the Eurobodalla Jazz Club Peter Poole whose expertise includes trombone, clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet.

Gold Rush Colony, Mogo © Gold Rush Colony
www.monthlyimag.com.au
The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000.
To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the Original Gold Rush Colony is a must.
Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time.
After taking out the award for Cultural and Heritage Tourism at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards in 2008, 2009 and 2010, in 2011 the Original Gold Rush Colony won the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award.
Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.
There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.
Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo. Providing world standard facilities for over 200 animals of more than 39 rare and exotic species, Mogo Zoo is committed to the survival of endangered species, including the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’.Mogo Zoo also won their category at the 2011 South Coast Regional Tourism Awards; they won the award for the best Tourist Attraction.
Make sure Mogo is on your must-see list; whether you're a visitor or a local, there's award-winning places to enjoy.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past two hundred years.
The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia.
Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.
Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is
deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations.
Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.
Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer.
There are lots of great national parks to explore within easy driving distance.
Batemans Bay has a fantastic 27 hole championship golf course, and there are plenty of other courses to play within easy driving distance.
The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering
local seafood on the menu.
Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee.

Pirates of Penzance Comes to the Bay Can you imagine the pirates who terrorise ships off the coast of Somalia hiding out in Smugglers Cove at Denhams Beach near Batemans Bay?Or a military general who purchases a a property with a dilapidated chapel near Nelligen to make himself part of the landed gentry in his retirement?Such flights of fancy are common fare in the libretti written by William Schwenck Gilbert for the operetta composed by Arthur (later Sir Arthur) Sullivan to entertain Victorian society in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. The Bay Theatre Players are celebrating
the genius of Gilbert and Sullivan with their final production of the 2012 season, The Pirates of Penzance.Director Barbara Gellatly is remaining faithful to the original libretto by W S Gilbert and the musical score by Sir Arthur Sullivan. Neither Barbara nor Musical Director, Linda Oxley, B.Mus., thinks modern adaptations of G & S do little or anything to improve on the humour and playwriting skills of Gilbert and both consider Sullivan's score sacrosanct.Barbara and Linda invite you to discover (or re-discover) why a satirical musical comedy on the
inter-play between a Pirate King, a modern (1880s) Major-General, some incompetent Cornish bobbies and a chorus of love-struck maidens, has proved to be a real crowd-pleaser for over 130 years. The Pirates season runs from 20th October - 10th November. Tickets cost $25/$22 and can be purchased at Bargain Box Fabrics, Orient Street, Batemans Bay 2536 or by phone on 4472 5984. Eftpos available.
