Bushwalking in National ParksSpend an hour, a day or more walking in the National Parks and reserves of the Region. The walks featured here are some of the more popular ones, but there are many short and medium distance walks available at almost all destinations within National Parks in the region. Ask at a NPWS office or local tourist information centre about others.Please note that for all these walks, strong footwear should be worn, carry food and water, and take clothing suitable for changing weather conditions.

1. The Big Hole/Marble Arch Deua National Park 4km return Approx. 1.5 hours Big Hole 13km return Approx. 5.5 hours Marble ArchThe north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The resident lyrebird may appear in the early morning or late afternoon when it comes out to feed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon.Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

2. Cascades Walk Wadbilliga National Park 3km return Approx. 2 hours

This easy walk begins from the Cascades Camping Area off Badja Forest Road near Countegany, east of Cooma. Follow the track through granite outcrops and forest rich with arboreal mammals to a viewing platform overlooking Tuross Falls and the spectacular gorge.

3. Kangarutha Walking Track Bournda National Park 9km one way Approx. 5 hoursStart this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, Allocasuarina paludosa, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

4. Light to Light Walk Ben Boyd National Park 31km one way Approx. 3 days

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Camping is available along the way or stay in comfort in the renovated Green Cape Lightkeepers Cottages. Park use fees apply.

Welcome to the beautiful Far South Coast - where else in the world would you want to be?

Winter has arrived, and although the nights are chilly, or even frosty for those inland from the coast, cold nights are usually followed by beautiful sunny days, perfect for outdoor activities or just curling up in a warm spot with a good book.

You won't have too much time for lazing around though - there's too many things happening on the Far South Coast this June.

The premier event this month is the Merimbula Jazz Festival, held over the Queen's Birthday weekend. Attracting musicians and jazz fans from all over Australia, the Jazz Festival is one of the premier festivals on the coast. The many faces of jazz music are showcased over three days, so finding music to suit your groove won't be hard. See pages 12, 14 and 15 for more information.

Continuing the music theme, Kate

Gascoyne is holding her very popular African drumming workshops in Batemans Bay. Kate's passion for African rhythms is contagious, and her background as a trained teacher with a classical music background mean that not only can she play, she can also teach. More information on page 39.

There's a great photographic exhibition on in Bermagui over the long weekend that features the magnificent native forests of the Far South Coast - details on page 26.

The Ace of Clubs golf tournament is on too, attracting golfers from around Victoria and NSW to four beautiful courses in the Bega Valley. Details are on page 9.

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests.

Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows.

A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century.

For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn.

You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum.

Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring.

In 2011, the Eden Whale Festival is being held over the weekend of 29th - 30th October - don't miss it!

Eden Killer Whale Museum celebrates its 80th anniversary

On 17 September 1930, while on his daily walk, Allie Greig discovered the body of the killer whale known as Tom. This single event was the impetus behind establishing a museum in Eden - a place to commemorate the intriguing natural story of the equal working relationship between the whalers and killer whales of Twofold Bay. Tom’s body was processed across the bay at Davidson Whaling Station on the shores of Kiah Inlet. Local entrepreneur John R Logan drove the vision, and in February the following year sought out a committee to begin the project of establishing a home for the skeleton of Tom.

The building was eventually completed in 1938 with Tom being installed early in 1939. In the interim, visitors to Eden were able to see the great orca skeleton in the private offices of Logan which were located close to the main business area of Imlay Street. Unfortunately Logan passed away late 1937, never seeing his dream realised.The museum building is now an iconic centrepiece overlooking the sapphire waters of Twofold Bay and has recently been recognised as holding collections of local, national and international significance. This year Eden Killer Whale Museum has a full programme of events planned to celebrate its 80th anniversary

including the new exhibition, Collectoscope.Collectoscope showcases rarely displayed items and reflects on the development of local and national culture in the distant and recent past. Artefacts range across a broad cross section of collecting areas including Australiana, militaria and costume. This exhibition complements the permanent exhibitions that encompass the historical aspects of Eden’s timber, fishing and whaling industries and maritime heritage.Collectoscope is open at the Eden Killer Whale Museum 11th September 2011.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late 19th century.However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.

Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. One of these buildings is the former home of Syms Covington, assistant to the great naturalist, Charles Darwin, on the second voyage of The Beagle in the 1830s. He became postmaster of Pambula in 1854, but remained in contact with the renowned scientist, sending a box of Twofold Bay barnacles to help in Darwin’s research.Pambula today has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops and pubs.

At the southern end of the town is Panboola, a community-managed recreational area that is restoring parts of the floodplain and former race course.Just 5 minutes east of the village is Pambula Beach, set between the ocean, the mouth of Pambula River and Ben Boyd National Park.

Pambula Beach has with an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, a dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth.There are also walking tracks and viewing platforms.

Heading south toward Eden from Pambula, turn off the Highway to Pambula Lake, where there’s a boat ramp for launching vessels. Several oyster growers sell fresh Pambula Lake oysters here too.

Ace of Clubs Golf Classic plays around the Valley this JuneAn initiative to boost visitor numbers during a traditionally quiet month has evolved into one of the premier events on the Far South Coast golfing calendar.The Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club organised the first Ace of Clubs Golf Classic back in 1997 to increase the number of golfers playing their course in June.The Club has continued to co-ordinate this event and build its success over the years, to the extent that there are now more than 60 clubs throughout NSW and Victoria represented by some 300-plus players.

The Ace of Clubs Classic has a round robin format involving four of the best golf courses on the Far South Coast - the Pambula-Merimbula Golf Club, Tura Beach Country Club, Eden Gardens Country Club and the Bega Country Club.Each golfer will play at least one round on each course, and daily competitions and prizes add to the attraction of the round robin format. Evening meals are on offer at most Host Clubs after each day's competition, and hot food is available during the day.In 2011, the Ace of Clubs Classic will be

held from Sunday 19th to Friday 24th June.A free day on Wednesday 22nd allows for players to take time out to enjoy some sightseeing, shopping or just relaxing, or for some, more golf.The Ace of Clubs week winds up with the Presentation Night, including the crowning of the King and Queen of Clubs and a Farewell Party, held at the Pambula - Merimbula Golf Club.Entries close on Friday May 27th, with entry forms available from participating clubs or online at www.merimbulagolf.com.au

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices.

Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early European history.

There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen.

Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, experiencing family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes with great coffee.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme.

For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the surrounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June.

Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

The June long weekend is when jazz takes over the coastal town of Merimbula.

From June 10 - 13, Merimbula Jazz Festival celebrates its 31st year and is one of Australia's longest-running festivals. With an amazing organising committee and fantastic support from local businesses, the Jazz Festival continues to hit all the right notes. Jazz musicians and fans from all around Australia make this event a permanent fixture on their calendars.

Whilst there are eight official Jazz Festival venues, many cafes and restaurants around Merimbula also celebrate the jazz spirit and transform themselves into live music venues.

Styles of music performed over the four days are many and varied with everything from big bands, swing bands, trad jazz, modern jazz, dixie, funk, duos, trios and quartets, all showing the many faces of jazz.

There are two new events as part of the 2011 Festival program; 'Jazz Art' where jazz-inspired artworks are featured at venues around town and 'Jazz Quest'.

Organised by the Down South Jazz Club, Jazz Quest is aimed at supporting young local jazz musicians and is open to trios to 6-piece outfits under 25 who live in the Bega Valley. The main prize is 3 hours of recording time at Moo Music (value $800) as well as other great prizes and a spot on the program.

Meet a special Echidna at Potoroo PalaceThe newest addition to our Potoroo Palace family, a very plucky little survivor, moved in to her new enclosure next to the Lizard sunning area in July after spending her mandatory six weeks in quarantine.She is a young white Echidna - a naturally occurring albino - which though generally rare in the animal kingdom, does pop up quite a bit in Echidnas.This little Echidna has had some extra challenges, which, combined with her unusual colouring, resulted in her being rescued from the wild and spending time in care.She was first spotted being attacked by birds in the wild, and upon further observation, discovered to be very malnourished, with a swollen sunburnt beak, and weak hind legs.She was nursed back to health by a devoted wildlife carer, and treated and assessed by a Vet. The Vet realised that her lack of speed and agility coupled with her reduced camouflage capability made her extremely vulnerable to attack by predators in the wild.It was decided that her best option for a happy healthy life was to live in a caring, protected natural environment that would cater for her needs, and that's where Potoroo Palace came in!Although she is still rather unsteady in her walk, and takes a few tumbles from

time to time, she never gives up and gets where she is going in the end.We know that she has calcium deficiency in her hind limbs, and upon consultation with an echidna expert, it appears that she may also have a genetic malformation of the pelvis.However, that does not stop her from exploring and living life to the full in her brand new home! Potoroo Palace is a not-for-profit organisation passionate about caring for the Earth, with people come from all over the world to Australia to see our native animals. You'll find Longnosed Potoroos, Macropods such as Eastern Grey Kangaroos and a swamp Wallaby, Bare-nosed Wombats, Short-beaked Echidnas, Long-nosed Bandicoots, Emus, Dingoes and Koalas. The Sanctuary is just a short drive from Merimbula, and with educational talks and the licensed Blue Wren Cafe offering fantastic lunches and great coffee, it's easy to spend the day at Potoroo Palace.

Discover local history at Merimbula's Old School MuseumOne of Merimbula's best kept secrets is the wonderful Old School Museum.A wonderful facility for locals and visitors alike, the Museum is a great place to spend some time.Originally built in 1873 as a school with attached residence, the building now houses an excellent collection of objects and photographs that tell stories of life in Merimbula and neighbouring Pambula from their origins to the present day.Stories of ship-wrecked sailors, whalers, squatters, settlers and gold miners are all to be found in the Museum. Bega is the business and administrative heart of the Bega Valley. It is also a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment.

Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Highway.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands, providing plenty of tucker.

The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy products, exporting millions of dollars worth of product every year.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region. The Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about attractions throughout the region.

Bega has seen its demographics change over the past 30 years, with many people moving from cities to enjoy the relaxed country lifestyle.

Bega has a thriving arts community with its own Regional Gallery which hosts several major exhibitions each year, as well as the artist-run Spiral Gallery.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. The Wharf also has tourist information on Tathra and surrounding areas.

Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dolphin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale.

Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Lifesaving Club.

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

Tathra also has plenty of great places to eat, ranging from gourmet delis to cafes and restaurants.

Tathra is a great base from which

you can explore the Mimosa Rocks National Park, which follows the coast up towards Bermagui. Beaches include Nelsons, Moon Bay, and Bithry Inlet, with camping available at Gillards and Middle Beach.

Is the ever increasing cost of fresh fruit a concern to you? If so, why not consider planting some interesting and delicious fruiting plants in your garden.Winter is a good time to plan your garden in readiness for an early spring planting of some of these unusual fruiting plants.The Blueberry can be easily grown in the home garden and a number of varieties of this delicious fruiting shrub are now available.

These thornless attractive shrubs can grow to a height of about 1.5 metres and require no support to grow on, unlike other berry plants. The plants prefer an acidic soil and situation similar to Azaleas and Camellias.Another interesting plant is the Pineapple Guava (Feijoa Sellowiana). This evergreen shrub grows to a height of up to 3 metres and develops a lovely fleshy flower with a conspicuous tuft of dark red stamens. The fruit is oval in

shape and up to 10cm long, dull green in colour and the flavour is suggestive of pineapple and strawberry when fully ripe. They are very suited to hedging. Finger Limes are another recent addition to our supply of unusual fruiting trees. A number of newer varieties have been developed by the C.S.I.R.O and are now being marketed in nurseries. They are great in jams, chutneys, stir fries or are great in cool summer drinks. There are many other fruiting plants available including Avocado, Macadamia, Indian or tropical Guava, Kiwi Fruit, Tamarillo and many more. Check you local nursery for varieties suited to your area. These are but a few in a collection of interesting fruit-bearing plants not normally associated with the more common fruiting shrubs and trees that we have become familiar with.

Step back in time wandering through the National Heritage listed village of Central Tilba


Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop.

Shops with leatherwork, woodwork, jewellery, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as the pub, art studios, and the famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

The famous Tilba Festival is held every Easter, and is a huge community event. Previous Festivals have included

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to people from the Yuin nation.

Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

The village of Central Tilba was founded in 1895, when Sam Bate created a subdivision on his land and sold lots at auction.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area.

The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

Winter is finally here and with it comes opportunities galore for the dedicated angler fishing the Far South Coast of NSW.Beaches: Have been fishing extremely well for big salmon to 3kg and XOS tailor. This will continue this month with most beaches holding fish. Look for deeper gutters close to shore with a lot of white water. Best baits are pilchards, blue bait, surf poppers and metal shiners. Using both paternoster and Ezy-rig combinations with a 10ft surf rod is best in the tackle department. Most productive beaches to try at present are North Tura, Cuttagee, Gillards, Tilba, Brou and Congo.Rocks: It’s time for the bread and butter species. With the cooler water, blackfish, drummer and bream will be available on most rock ledges. Using cunjevoi, cabbage weed, and fresh prawns should see a fish or two. Almost any headland with a decent wash will produce fish. Also expect salmon on the outside wash zones. Better ledges to try are Tura Head, Tathra Head, Mystery Bay and Blackfellows south of Tuross.

Estuaries: Still fishing well despite the cooling water. Bream, flathead, blackfish and big tailor will make most estuaries home. Fresh prawns, live nippers and striped tuna cubes are good bait for bream and flathead. Smaller chrome lures up to 30g are ideal for tailor, with

fresh green weed for the blackfish. Soft plastics and hard bodied lures will also work for bream and flathead. Better estuaries at the moment are Pambula, Bega River, Narooma and Batemans Bay.

Offshore: Should still be yellowfin tuna and albacore around for those willing to travel to the shelf. Trolling lures and live baiting/cubing are the best methods, with yellowfin tuna of late averaging 30 - 40kg with 80kg fish possible. Inshore, snapper, morwong and flathead will be available on most reefs. Fresh cuttlefish and squid are the top baits, with soft plastics catching some of the bigger snapper especially in water less than 10 metres and close to shore. Best reefs would be Bunga, 4 and 6 mile, SW corner of Montague Island and Potato Point in 60 - 70 metres of water.

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income in the previous century.

The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia.

Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.

Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations.

Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.

Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer.

There's great shopping to be had, with many nationally branded retail outlets as well as locally-owned stores. Interior design, fashion, books, hobbies, sporting goods - there's something to suit every interest.

Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee, or go for a walk at Mossy Point or Guerilla Bay.

Always wanted to try African drumming? Canberra’s leading djembe teacher and performer, Kate Gascoyne, regularly visits Batemans Bay to bring her high energy African drumming workshops to the people of the South Coast. Welcoming all levels from beginners through to experienced drummers,

Kate’s sessions are a great way to meet people, de-stress, re-energise, and learn new skills – all while enjoying being a part of creating the infectious traditional rhythms of West Africa.Kate is a trained teacher with a classical music background who fell in love with djembe in her early twenties.
