George Bass and Mathew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong spiritual connection with killer whales, and this connection extended to include the harvesting of small whales and fish that the killer whales herded into the shallows. This history of collaboration between killer whales and humans was the subject of the documentary “Killers Of Eden”, screened on ABC TV in 2006.

A permanent shore-based whaling sta-tion was first established by the Imlay Brothers in the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of the town’s history at the Eden Killer Whale Museum, and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can also visit Davidson’s Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay.

Eden is now famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. To celebrate the significance of whales to the town, Eden holds its Whale Festival in November each year.

The historic Boydtown, just a short drive south on the Princes Highway, was built by Ben Boyd in 1843 on the shores of Twofold Bay, in the heyday of the whaling industry. The Seahorse Inn, also built in 1843, has been beautifully restored to its former glory, and the ruins of Boyd’s church can still be seen.

Eden is a paradise for those who love to fish, with kilometres of beaches, river estuaries and rock platforms to explore, as well as charter boat opera-tions for access for deep-sea fishing.

Eden has beautiful beaches close to town; try Aslings Beach for a surf or to explore rock pools, or Corcora Beach for fun with the family.

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation.

Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797. Seeking shelter from a gale, Bass travelled up the Pambula River, noting its beauty in his diary. A marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site.

European settlement began in the 1830s, with the original township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground.

Timber, maize, wattlebark, dairying and oyster farming formed the basis of the local economy in the late nineteenth century.

However in 1888, gold was discovered on the banks of the Yowaka River, and by 1891 there were eleven mining companies in operation at the Mount Gahan site.

Pambula’s historic past is very much in evidence today, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses.

This thriving village has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafes, restaurants, gift shops, and pubs.

MUST SEE & DO

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Bega Valley with its lakeside restaurants and cafes, and a vast array of attrac-tions and accommodation choices.

Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the avail-able food resources, leaving behind middens that are still visible today.

In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the region to the outside world, as the area was relatively iso-lated with a lack of rail or road access.

The Old School Museum on Main St has information and displays about the town’s early history.

With its beautiful location on the shores of Merimbula Lake, there are plenty of places to enjoy the view; looking across the bay from the restored Merimbula Wharf, enjoying the sunrise or sunset from the Board-walk around the southern section of the Lake, or strolling around Fishpen watching the pelicans.

There are a range of activities and attractions in Merimbula, including deep-sea fishing, whale-watching, snorkelling, surfing, cycling, scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close.

Merimbula is a great place to go shop-ping, with specialty shops and nation-ally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafes to provide a caffeine boost if the energy levels start to fall.

Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme.

For a musical night out, there are lots of venues in Merimbula and the sur-rounding areas that offer live music; especially during the annual Jazz Festival in June.

Tura Beach is only a short drive north, with its own shopping centre, country club and beautiful beach.

Great Winter Orchid Show at Twyford HallThe Sapphire Coast Orchid Club is holding its Great Winter Orchid Show at Twyford Hall in Market St Merimbula from Friday 14 - Sunday 16 August.

Visitors can expect to see well over 200 orchids on display. The popular Cymbidium orchids are at their peak for this show and fill the hall with their exquisite blooms. They will be well sup-ported by other exotic orchids and a strong showing of Australian Natives.

The show attracts growers from all over the South Coast vying for the 18 Championship awards on offer.

This is a great opportunity to explore the world of orchids and there will be

plenty of help available if you would like to grow these beautiful plants yourself. Potting demonstrations and tips on orchid culture will be given during the show.

Entry is free and there will be locally grown orchids for sale to suit both en-thusiasts and new starters, but be early as this popular feature quickly sells out.

The show will be open from 9am to 5pm on Friday and Saturday and from 9am to 1pm on Sunday.

For information about the Sapphire Coast Orchid Club and upcoming events, please visit: www.sapphirecoastorchids.org.au

World-famous pianist Roman Rudnytsky plays in WolumlaAccording to the New York Times, Roman Rudnytsky is an internationally active concert pianist of 'uncommon skills and facility’. Born in New York into a prominent Ukrainian musical family, he began to study piano at the age of four and gave his first full recital at seven!

HEADLANDFISHING ADVENTURES

Merimbula - NSW

The best fishing boat in town offeringREEF, DEEP SEA & GAME FISHING

Ph 02 6495 113438ft Millman • Max 12 Passengers • On-board Toilet

Cold SW winds are the norm this month with beanies, gloves and anything else that keeps you warm needed, but for those anglers braving the elements, some exceptional fish-ing is still available, especially on the beaches.Beaches: Can be an excellent month to fish from the sand with salmon, tailor, bream and gummy sharks all possible. Using a paternoster rig with a combined bait/surf popper presen-tation is ideal, pilchards or bluebait the best baits to use especially for salmon and tailor. Look for a beach that has a deeper gutter and fish the rising tide when possible. Early morn-ings will be best with the southern end of beaches usually providing shelter from the cool SW winds. Better beaches to try are Haycock, Tura, Gil-lard’s, Tilba, Brou and Congo.Rocks: With the very cold water we experience this month, surface pelagics like salmon and tailor will make up most angler’s bags. Using both ganged pilchards and metal lures should see some great action on these fine sportfish. Almost any headland will produce fish at times; look for one that has plenty of white water but please take care on the rocks and make sure your safety is the first priority. Expect a few drummer, bream, trevally and blackfish in the wash zones too, with cunjevoi, fresh prawns, cabbage weed and bread ideal baits. Better headlands to try are Tura Head, Tathra, Nelsons, Blue pool, Mystery Bay and the rocks at the golf course at Narooma.Estuary: Probably the quietest month of the year to fish the estuar-ies but mainstray species like tailor,

Stuart Hindson is the owner of Aussie Fish Es-tuary Adventures, and provides guided fish-ing charters from Wonboyn to Batemans Bay and all estuaries in between. With over 20 years experience in the industry, Stuart re-ally knows his fishing. trevally, blackfish and bream will be around. Use fresh bait for best results with prawns, worms and bass yabbies the best. Soft plastics will also work for bream and trevally; concentrate your efforts in the lower sections of the estuary or the channels. Australian salmon are possible opponents also especially towards the estuary entranc-es. Places like Pambula, Merimbula, Bega River and Narooma would be the pick to fish during this colder period.Offshore: Water temperature will be hovering around 13-14 degrees; it’s very cold so the pelagic action will be very quiet apart from salmon around the headlands and close in bommies. Eden’s Twofold Bay is certainly worth a look if targeting salmon. Try the south-ern side of the bay near the entrance to the Kiah River. On the reefs, snap-per, morwong, trevally, John Dory and leatherjackets are all possible, but a lot depends on water temperature and currents. A few reefs to try are Horse-shoe, Long, Potato Point and Moruya reefs. For game fishos heading wide off the shelf it’s been an amazing period for jumbo southern bluefin tuna; expect these brutes to be around for a little longer yet.Tight lines till next month.Stuart Hindson

Home of the world famous Bega Cheese

Bega is a place of natural beauty, sur-rounded by lush pastures and forests hugging the escarpment. Views of Mumbulla Mountain to the north and the escarpment to the west are best appreciated from the Lookout, located just 3 kilometres north of town on the Princes Hwy.

In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”; it would have been a place of great abundance.

The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dariy prod-ucts.

A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must; the Heritage Centre has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s, and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

The Heritage Centre is also home to the Bega Tourist Information Centre, which provides information about at-tractions throughout the region.

Andy Poole Drive Tathra

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples.

Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is still a popular spot for fishing.

Swimming at Tathra’s patrolled beach (summer only) may provide the added bonus of a dophin sighting, or even a glimpse of a passing whale. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkelling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. Tathra Beach & Bike can provide you with just about everything you need for an active holiday from a snorkel right through to a new mountain bike.

There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and great playground, both located near the Tathra Surf Club.

An easy 3km walking & cycling track runs from Tathra to the mouth of the Bega River at Mogareeka, with other walks around town as well.

Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay, and the boat ramp at

Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary.

If you’re keen to have a round of golf or a hit of tennis, drop in to the Tathra Beach Country Club.

Tathra also has plenty of great places to eat, ranging from the Tathra Beach Country Club to the Tathra Butcher with award-winning sausages. And of course there’s the famous Tathra Hotel with its deck overlooking the ocean.

Bermagui offers visitors a myriad of things to do and places to go.

Pristine beaches and lakes provide water activities from surfing to swimming, snorkelling, boating and canoeing. Book a fishing charter on one of the many local boats or throw in a line from the beach, rocks or along the Bermagui River.

Try out the 18-hole golf course, hit a ball around the tennis courts or play bowls. Test your riding skills at the Bermagui Mountain Bike Park. Go bush walking, take a guided walk or bird watch in the surrounding National Parks and State Forests.

Take a guided tour of the Montreal Goldfield and learn about the discovery of gold in the 1880s.

Drive south to taste local wines and enjoy a meal at the Mimosa Drystone Restaurant.

There is a range of accommodation in Bermagui including B&Bs, motels, tourist/caravan parks, self-contained holiday units and houses and camping.

The historic Bermagui Beach Hotel offers fine food, beverages and accommodation in truly spectacular location overlooking Horseshoe Bay.

Bermagui is undergoing something of a building boom, with the construction of the new $3.4m Fishermans’ Co-op, and Stage 1 of the $2m Bermagui Surf Lifesaving Club at Horseshoe Bay underway.

Bermagui is a fantastic place to base yourself when on holiday. After you've finished exploring all the things to do around town, it's only a short drive to the beautiful Foxglove Gardens at Tilba Tilba and the historic village Central Tilba. Cobargo, the village famous for its working craftspeople, is only a 15 minute drive away.

The Montreal Goldfield is a Heritage Site that lies 7km north of Bermagui on the Wallaga Lake Road. It is a relatively intact remnant of the gold rush days of the early 1880s, and is unique in that it is the only goldfield in Australia located beside the sea.A section of the original goldfield has been preserved, but for safety reasons, you can only enter the Goldfield as part of a tour. This however provides a wonderful opportunity to hear the full Montreal story; a story of mystery, his-tory and fascinating anecdotes. Compacted paths and boardwalks allow visitors to wander through the beautiful forest and tree ferns. During

the goldrush period, the miners, in their frenzy for profit, laid the area bare; hard to imagine now given the lush-ness of the area. The track itself is approximately 200m long and most is wheel chair accessi-ble, and there are plenty of strategically located benches along the track. The tour itself takes around 1 ¼ hours and toilet facilities are available. Tours of the Goldfield are held daily at 2pm. If you have a group of more than 12, you are welcome to contact the Bermagui Visitors Centre 6493 3054 and choose a time that suits you. Admission is $5pp.

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains.

The village was established with a Post Office, General Store, school, Hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese making industries.

A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when the Co-op closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

The town was once known as Wattletown because from the 1860s, wattle bark was stripped from wattle trees and used in the tanning industry in Sydney and Melbourne. The industry ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as 'The Junction' because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town.

Today, Cobargo is a wonderful example of working village of local artisans. Many of the buildings in the town are over 100 years old and reflect the charm of the art & craft housed within them.

Your Gardenwith Keith Mundy

Herbs are practical and beautiful and can be grown both indoors and out. Valued throughout history for their medicinal and ‘magical’ qualities, they have however been used in more recent years for cooking.

Recently herbs have enjoyed a revival of interest, with many lifestyle pro-grammes being thrust at us on televi-sion and in the written press. Many herbalists and alternative medical practitioners are also advocating the use of herbs to cure all that might ail us.

Herbs can fill a garden with delicious fragrances, turn a simple meal into a gastronomic delight and add aromatic charm and mystique to potpourris and sachets. They can be planted formally or informally, demand little care, and each has a unique distinctive flavour.

Before you start your herb garden, you first need to decide what you want it for, how much time you want to spend gardening and how much space you would like it to occupy. If you decide you want a kitchen garden with a working selection of culinary herbs, plan around the basic eight: basil, chives, marjoram, mint, parsley, sage, savoury and thyme. For fragrance,

choose among angelica, balm, fen-nel, lavender, lemon verbena, mints, rosemary, scented geraniums, tansy and thyme.

In considering the site for your herb garden choose a sunny spot with a well- drained soil and a location that is not to far from the kitchen. A small plot of 2.0m X 3.5m can accommodate several varieties of herbs and should you require more space, create another small plot elsewhere. If this type of herb garden cannot be put in place due to site restrictions, consideration should be given to wall planters or a arrangement of pots that can be used with annual herbs. These have the convenience of being placed in areas where you cannot plant a herb, includ-ing paved areas or on a step adjacent to the kitchen.

When a container is used, select a rep-utable potting mix that contains a slow release fertiliser and water granules.

The maintenance of your herbs is also a priority as a poorly grown herb can end up becoming woody and in some cases can lose the desired taste of that herb. The best way to trim herbs is to continue to use the herb frequently by removing the edible parts thus en-

couraging new fresh growth. Fertilise regularly with a complete fertiliser and if you have planted in a garden bed, mulch with organic mulch like sugar cane mulch that can break down over a period of time and add more nutri-ent to the soil.

Call in and talk to us about your herb selection and whilst you're here, visit the adjacent Foxglove Spire Gardens and see how herbs have been used in this lovely garden.

Central Tilba maintains its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as ‘old-fashioned’ stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, jewellery, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques, giftware, as well as a bakery, a pub and famous cheese factory are all located on Central Tilba’s main street.

The Tilba Festival is held every Easter.

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation.

Named Mt. Dromedary by Captain Cook in 1770, the lower slopes of Gulaga became the site of much activity when gold was discovered in the 1860s.

Many of Tilba’ s buildings were constructed in the late 1880s when the gold boom was at its peak. By the time mining ceased, the dairy industry was firmly established as the main source of income for the area.

The village of Tilba Tilba, just a few kilometres south of Central Tilba, is also protected by a National Heritage listing.

Tilba Tilba is home to the magnificent Foxglove Spires, featuring one of Australia’s finest open gardens covering 3.5 acres. There is also a cafe, giftware, antiques and a nursery on site. Tilba Tilba also has a general store, and is the base for the walk up Gulaga.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by he National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance.

Gulaga Gallery and Bookstore is named after beautiful Gulaga Mountain which towers up be-hind Tilba. It was built at the end of the 19th Century from local eucalyptus timbers, and since 1991, this varied and enchanting shop has been owned by Shanti and Sol Ramana-Clarke.

Sol has developed a unique style of jewellery using sterling silver and gold-filled wire to mount a huge variety of semi-precious stones. He might suggest you “pick a stone that jumps out at you” and watch him mount it into a pendant, ring ...or whatever...

Sol also produced the widely acclaimed documentary film “The Hemp Revolution”, so naturally you’ll find a full range of environmentally friendly hemp clothes, hemp seed oil and cosmetics.

Shanti’s passion for colour and style is reflected in the varied range of women's clothing. Also find lots of gorgeous winter woollies for both sexes.

Shanti and Sol’s love of universal spirituality is expressed in their range of interesting and in-sightful books & DVD’s, cards, and inspirational music. You may also be treated to the uplifting sound of Shanti and Sol’s own musical CD “Open”.

Most of all, just enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere!

The name Moruya is derived from an Aboriginal word (the area's original inhabitants are the Bugelli-Manji tribe) meaning 'home of the black swan'.

Set on the banks of the Moruya River, the township has many beautifully preserved buildings, churches and streetscape, and is a great place to explore.

Moruya is famous for supplying the granite for the piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, as well as Sydney’s Post Office, the Bank of NSW and the Cenotaph in Martin Place.

These days, Moruya is known for the large, intricately carved wooden poles that are dotted along the footpath of the main street.

Moruya has a wide array of specialty shops for those looking for something unique.

Fantastic cafes, restaurants and hotels with live music can also be found in this bustling little town.

Moruya has a thriving arts community, with exhibitions frequently held at the Mechanics Institute, as well as numer-ous festivals held throughout the year.

If you're in town on a Saturday morn-

ing, drop in to the Moruya markets held on the banks of the Moruya river from 8am. There are a wide range of stalls offering arts and crafts, clothing, bric-a-brac, plant and fresh produce stalls and hot and cold food.

With beautiful beaches and National Parks all located close by, Moruya is a great place to stay or visit.

The township of Mogo was born when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. Certainly there were enough people to support a number of stores, pubs and churches and a public school, which is still operating today.

To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to Old Mogo Town is a must.

Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings. There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

Also in Mogo is the internationally recognised Mogo Zoo, home to 39 rare and exotic species, inlcuding the rare white lions of ‘Timbavati’.

MUST SEE & DO

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income in the previous century.

The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia; the bridge celebrated its 50th birthday in 2006.

Now a thriving regional centre and major tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty.

Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations.

Hire a boat, kayak or even a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River.

There are a myriad of beaches to explore, views to enjoy and walks to take, no matter what the season.

Batemans Bay is a great destination

for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer.

Batemans Bay has a fantastic 27 hole championship golf course, and there are plenty of other courses to play within easy driving distance.

Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee, or head north across the bridge and experience Long, Pebbly and Depot Beach.

While there, take a walk in the Murramarang National Park.

The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu.

Picknicking by the water is a must.

The Australian Queen Tribute Show are the most exciting Queen act to come out of Australia yet. They are quickly gaining a reputation for stunning audi-ences with their incredible replication of what was one of the greatest live bands in history.

Gareth Hill as Freddie Mercury has to be seen to be believed. His vocal range, stage antics and amazing like-ness for the great man are a sight and sound to behold.

Scotty Hotpants as the inimitable Brian May replicates the licks of Brian with such accuracy that even die hard fans are left amazed.

They will rock you - Queen Tribute Show plays Bay SoldiersThe ever reliable bass player of the band is played by Darryn Schultz… Let’s just say that the staid and sensible John Deacon is played to perfection.

Queen’s drummer, Roger Taylor had a style which cannot be mistaken so the choice of Brad Hodge as Mr Taylor was a masterstroke… The look, the playing style, the outrageous hair… The Aus-tralian Queen Tribute Show - nothing but the best will do.

You can experience the Australian Queen Tribute Show at the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club on Saturday 22nd August - doors open at 8.30pm. Tickets are $15 members and $17 non members.
