Hello Again,
Life seems to keep on drifting by. Minutes
become hours—hours into weeks. With no effort
or control on our part—on into years.
About one half of my lifetime ago—one lady
and three men—each associated with Lee
Publications, held a meeting in the Pennysaver
office. More than memory can bring into focus it
may have not been the first time we gathered to
talk about starting a new regional weekly farm
newspaper, but it was the most important.
This is what happened that day: we
committed ourselves to publish a new weekly
farm newspaper. The first issue would be
published on November 12, 1974. That was about
38 years ago. After several hours of discussion,
its name would be—Country Folks. A true farm
weekly. A dream had been turned into action.
Janice Handy would be the editor. Dick St. John,
publications director. Jack Hayden would
manage printing and Fred Lee, the first
advertising salesperson.
A special front-page message said:
Hello---
It’s obvious that this is our first issue. What’s
not so obvious is our sincere desire to do the
best we can for you — our readers. We promise
honest effort, flexibility to your desires and real
caring. This song by T. Hall expresses our
thoughts…
Country is — Sittin’ on the back porch
listening to the whippoorwill, late in the day.
Country is — Minding your business helpin’ a
stranger, if he comes your way.
Country is — Living in the city knowing your
people, knowing your kind.
Country is — What you make it.
Country is — all in your mind.
Country is — Workin’ for a living thinkin’ your
own thoughts — loving your
town.
Country is — Teachin’ your
children, find out what’s right,
and stayin’ your ground.
Country is — Walkin’ in the
moonlight.
Country is — all in your
heart.
Little did we dream that Country Folks would
grow into one of the largest weekly farm
publications serving the farm and agriculture
related industries in the Eastern United States.
Most of the people who will read this brief bio
of Country Folks are not farmers. So why all of
this chatter? It is to make a point. Country
Folks was a dream or plan that was originated
right here in the Palatine Corridor, not in some
large or famous village or city. And for 38 years
it has proven to be a standard in its industry—
never missed an issue or a payroll in all of those
years. Nearly 2,000 issues and still growing.
The Mohawk Valley is a good place — a great
place to start a business. Out of little acorns,
grow large oak trees. Business is like the little
acorn — first a seed must be planted. First a
business must be started.
It is never too late to start living a happy and
successful life, but the sooner we begin, the
greater the results. God has provided
everything we need to live the good life. We are
exposed to exciting new opportunities each day,
to capitalize on them, we — or you, must grasp
an opportunity and take advantage.
Could it be the Good Lord is sending us a mes-
sage? This apple with the heart
message was grown right here in our valley at
Bellinger’s Orchard in Fultonville.
Published in the Grit newspaper — June 23,
1974
Ideas Grow On You. A village in northern
Romania plants a cherry tree at the birth of
every village child. The village, Ciersoaia, which
has kept this custom hundreds of years, is now
surrounded by 65,000 cherry trees.
When a man is born people ask, “How is the
mother?” When he marries they exclaim, “What a
lovely bride!” and when he dies they inquire, “How
much did he leave her?”
An early Mohawk Valley lady asked an old
Indian, “How did this beautiful valley come
about?” He answered, “It was cut by a huge
glacier.” “Where is the glacier now?” she asked.
He replied, “It went back looking for another
valley.”
What do you think of this for an idea?
At every house, in or near the Mohawk Valley,
we plant lilac bushes visible from the street or
road. Some day we could have a Lilac Festival.
Can you imagine how beautiful it would be?
I rode the red Spyder roadster down to
Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown on Wednesday
morning. The air was a little nippy but still
comfortable. As time marches on, so do the
seasons. Many of our Country Folks believe fall is
our most beautiful time of the year, while others
prefer springtime with everything coming back to
life. How fortunate we are with the changing
seasons and for Bassett Hospital.
The great Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown
grew from a small country hospital, sponsored
by the Clark Family. Today it is a nationally
known and highly appreciated health care center
with clinics in several surrounding communities. I
have been told Bassett Hospital is now the
largest employer in Otsego County.
Soon we will be raking leaves, then shoveling
snow. That is the part of the time clock we live
with.
Country Folks farm newspaper may be
considered one of our community’s greatest
accomplishments, however without its faithful
readers our efforts would be fruitless. And you
readers of the Original Valley and Family
Pennysavers are the reason these weekly
publications exist. Thank you.
Next time you drive by a church, take a peek
upward, and say Thank You Lord. He has his eye
and hand on you.
Your neighbors are your closest friends, take
time to say hello and offer a prayer for them.
Fred Lee and the Lee Family
Hello Again
Chelsea Dimond of Canajoharie was sure Pennysaverreader’s would enjoy this picture of an apple with theperfect shaped heart. Thanks Chelsea, maybe theseeds should be planted.

POLAND, NY — WhenPoland student AdamTravis steps onto awrestling mat, he enjoysknowing he will be com-pletely responsible for theoutcome.
The one-on-one aspectof wrestling allows him tofocus in on nothing butwhat he and his opponentare doing.
On Columbus DayWeekend, he’ll be lockedinto that direct competi-tion again — except every-thing around him will bedifferent.
Adam, 16, will be com-peting in a wrestling tour-nament in Puerto Rico.
“I’m looking forward totraveling out of the coun-try and participating inthe sport I love,” he said.“I’ll be experiencing a dif-ferent culture and meet-ing new people.”
A junior at Poland Cen-tral School District, Adam
was selected to be a mem-ber of the Mohawk ValleyWrestling Club team thatwill travel to Puerto Ricofrom Oct. 4 to Oct. 8 forthe Copa Sparta FreestyleTournament.
About 300 wrestlersfrom several countrieswill be competing in thetournament.
The Mohawk ValleyWrestling Club team, which represents USAWrestling, will also taketime during the trip to ex-perience Puerto Ricanculture and tour the is-land.
In order to raise the$650 needed to partici-pate in the trip, Adam hasobtained donations fromlocal businesses and willbe using money he earnedwhile working for his fa-ther and at a local recre-ation center.
‘I’m determined’Adam started wrestling
in ninth grade and hasloved the experience —even if it hasn’t alwaysbeen easy.
His freshman year wasa struggle, but when heobtained his first victorynear the end of the sea-son, he knew he couldcompete in the sport, hesaid.
As a sophomore, follow-ing a strong first match,he was knocked uncon-scious during his secondmatch and had to misstwo weeks of action. Afterreturning, he won enoughmatches to qualify for theSection III Class D tour-nament.
Following the season,Adam approached hisvarsity wrestling coach,Poland technology educa-tion teacher Mark Harlan-der, and asked aboutways to improve in theoffseason.
Harlander told Adamabout the Mohawk ValleyWrestling Club, and anopportunity arose to trainwith the club this year inWhitesboro.
“He’s got the heart anddetermination to get bet-ter each time he steps ona mat,” Harlander said.“I’m proud of him, and I’mproud of the opportunityhe has.”
After signing up for the
Puerto Rico tournament,Adam went through a se-lection process that wasbased on effort, personal-ity and respect, Adamsaid.
“I showed up to everypractice, worked hardevery time and askedquestions when I didn’tknow how to do some-thing,” Adam said.
Adam expects the tour-nament experience tohelp him entering his jun-ior season at Poland, andhe would like to share anynew insights he gainswith his teammates.
“I’m hoping I can defi-nitely talk to the team,”he said. “I’m not the bestwrestler at Poland — Iknow I’m not — but I’mdetermined. And if you’redetermined, I think thatcounts more than yourrecord.”
‘Terrific opportunity’Adam said he has en-
joyed being part of Har-lander’s varsity wrestlingprogram.
“I love wrestling, and hetaught me that I can doanything, really,” Adamsaid.
The varsity wrestlingprogram at Poland will beentering only its fourthseason this year, andAdam will be the firstPoland student to com-
pete in the Puerto Ricotournament.
Wrestling matches inhigh school are based onscholastic — or folkstyle— wrestling rules. Thetournament, however, willbe operating underfreestyle rules, whichAdam learned about atthe Mohawk ValleyWrestling Club.
Adam said it will be in-teresting to go up againstpeople who have wrestledfreestyle their whole lives, but he thinks hard workwill be able to overcomethe difference in freestyleexperience.
Harlander believesAdam will learn thingsfrom the trip that he’ll beable to share withPoland’s other grapplers.
“It’s a terrific opportuni-ty — not just for him, butthe program as well,”Harlander said. “He hasthe opportunity to repre-sent not only himself, butalso the whole communityand the entire UnitedStates.”
Adam will get to travelwith some of the bestwrestlers in the state andget to compete againstsome of the top wrestlersin the world at the tour-nament, but that’s notthe only value of the trip,Harlander said.
“I hope that he comesaway with a great experi-ence — more than justwhat happens on themat,” Harlander said.“Not everybody gets to goto Puerto Rico.”

by Martha FilipicLate last school year, I
was surprised when myson’s school said he wasbullying another student. He is about to start thefourth grade and I’m notsure what to say to him tomake sure he doesn’t dothis again. Any advice?
First, it sounds like youhave already taken an im-portant first step: Admitthat your child was in thewrong. It’s a difficultmindset for many parentsto adopt, but it’s vital toget past the stage of de-nial so you can begin toaddress the problem.
Child development pro-fessionals say that chil-dren who become bulliesare often modeling behav-ior they see in others. Hasyour son himself beenbullied? Has he witnessedor been the victim of actsof aggression, intimida-tion or violence at homeor at school? Don’t makethe mistake of assumingyou would know if your
son had been exposed tosuch experiences. Chil-dren are often afraid orembarrassed to tell adultsabout their victimization,or believe it wouldn’t doany good anyway.
• Studies on childrenwho bully others hasfound that bullies tend to:
• Have higher levels ofanger.
• Believe that manipu-lation or intimidationworks better than nonvio-lent strategies when deal-ing with others.
• Be good at hiding neg-ative behavior fromadults.
• Accept aggression asjustifiable.
• Enjoy feelings of pow-er and control.
• Be unhappy at schooland lack a sense of be-longing there.
• Be impulsive.• Have feelings of de-
pression.• Have problems at
home.• Blame others for their
actions.It’s important to try to
understand where thebullying behavior is com-ing from, but it’s evenmore important to ad-dress the issue directlywith your son:
• Make it clear that bul-lying is unacceptable. Es-tablish clear rules andconsequences for break-ing those rules, and beconsistent in your follow-through. Be sure to usenon-violent, non-physicalmethods of discipline.
• Be sure you’re model-ing appropriate behaviorin your own actions withyour son and with others.Be assertive, not aggres-sive, and treat others withkindness and respect.
• Help your son findnon-aggressive ways tointeract with others.
• Talk to your son abouthow it feels to be bullied, and help him build empa-thy for others.
• Keep in close contactwith your son’s teachers
and the school counselorto seek help in changingyour son’s behavior.
• Spend more time withyour son and praise himwhen he acts appropriate-ly.
• If the bullying per-sists, seek professionalcounseling or an evalua-tion by a mental healthprofessional.

New York adopted thefinal changes to regula-tions that will reducefishing mortality of riverherring and create a sus-tainable fishery, NewYork State Department ofEnvironmental Conserva-tion (DEC) CommissionerJoe Martens announcedSept. 5. River herring(alewife and bluebackherring) are anadromousfish that spend most oftheir life in the ocean butreturn to their natalrivers to spawn.
“River herring are partof New York’s native fau-
na and need to be moreintensively managed toprovide long-term, sus-tainable populations,”said CommissionerMartens. “These uniquefish are important to NewYork’s waters and manyNew Yorkers enjoy theirreturn to tidal waterseach spring.”
In the Hudson River, commercial and recre-ational anglers primarilyuse these fish as bait forstriped bass, but someare taken for human con-sumption. Because infor-mation on the status of
the river herring popula-tions is available for theHudson River and itstributaries and DEC canassess that status ofthese populations, a con-tinuing fishery is allowed, though a reduced fishery.Since little data is avail-able on stock status inother New York waters, implementing a moratori-um on river herring fish-ing is required.
The adopted rule re-stricts the current fisheryin the Hudson River, andall tributaries and em-bayments by:
• Establishing a recre-ational open season anda daily creel limit.
• Permitting anglingonly (e.g. no nets) in thetributaries and embay-ments.
• Reducing the size ofallowable nets in theHudson River proper.
• Requiring charterboats to register with theDEC to be eligible for aspecial boat creel limit.
The rules for commer-cial fishers include:
• Increasing restric-tions on net use and size.
• Establishing a 36-hour no-fishing escape-
ment period for all fishinggears.
• Increasing monthlyreporting requirementsfor their catches.
The list of waters wherethe harvest of river her-ring is prohibited are: theDelaware River and itstributaries, all streams inBronx, Kings, Manhat-tan, Nassau, Richmond,Suffolk, and Queenscounties, and Westch-ester County streamsthat are tributary to theEast River or Long IslandSound.
The Atlantic State Ma-rine Fisheries Commis-
sion (ASMFC), a coopera-tive interstate fisheriesmanagement organiza-tion, of which New YorkState is a member, re-cently confirmed thatcoast- wide river herringstocks are depleted. Theblockage of rivers bydams, habitat degrada-tion and overfishing ledto the depletion of the riv-er herring stocks alongthe Atlantic coast.
In 2008, ASMFC adopt-ed an amendment to theASMFC Interstate FisheryManagement Plan forShad and River Herringrequiring states to adoptmeasures that would re-duce fishing mortalityand allow the river her-ring stocks to rebuild.New York State promul-gated these regulationchanges to comply withthe amendment and toprotect the local riverherring stocks.

by Samantha MazzottaOverseed lawn nowfor spring growthQ: I have some
brown and bare patch-es in my yard. Myneighbor recommend-ed that I thatch my en-tire yard, or at leastthe brown patches, then put some fertilizerand “overseed” thedamaged areas. Whatkind of fertilizer is hetalking about? Andwhy seed the lawnnow, when winter iscoming? — Fred D.,Madison, WI
A: Overseedinglawns can be helpful infilling in scrawny orthin areas. The idea isto overseed shortly be-fore the first hard
frost. The seeds willgerminate and estab-lish roots, which willboth help the lawncome in more lush andgreen in the spring, aswell as reduce compe-tition from invasiveweeds.
However, it’s impor-tant to know what kindof grass makes up yourlawn, in order to pickthe right kind of seedfor the job, as well asthe correct type andamount of fertilizer. I’drecommend cutting asmall patch of grass(including roots) andtaking it to your localnursery or the lawnand garden center ofyour home-improve-ment store.
While you’re gettingyour grass identified, ask about possiblecauses of the brownand bare areas. Theremay be a problem withair, water or lightreaching those areas.Improper or excessivefertilization could beoccurring. Or maybe
there’s too much waterin those areas due to adrainage problem.Identifying the actualcause of the brown andbare spots, and theneliminating that cause, will prevent it fromcoming back onceyou’ve repaired thoseareas.
Once the bare andbrown spots are ad-dressed, overseeding(and reseeding bare ar-eas) can take place. For small lawns, ahandheld spreader isinexpensive andspreads seeds evenly. For larger lawns, a ro-tary spreader works
best.HOME TIP: Prior to
overseeding, mow yourlawn to less than 2inches in height if pos-sible and collect thegrass clippings soseeds can reach thesoil.
