(StatePoint) — If eating healthier and getting more exercise tops your New Year’sresolution list, consider extending these worthwhile goals to the whole family.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, childhood obesityin this country has more than tripled over the past 30 years. But you can help yourfamily get the right nutrition and exercise to stay healthy.

“Not only is it extremely important for kids to get all the vitamins, nutrients andphysical activity they need to stay healthy, but habits formed early in life — bothgood and bad — can last a lifetime,” says Dr. Thomas McInerny, president of theAmerican Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

The AAP is offering some healthy living tips for parents to help kids get on theright track for the upcoming year.

Improving eating habits• You may have bad childhood memories of being forced to sit at the table until

you cleaned your plate. Don’t perpetuate this method of mealtime management! Itsends the wrong message by emphasizing quantity over quality and can lead to sig-nificant overeating. Foster a healthier attitude toward food by focusing on what youserve in the first place.

• Establish a routine with regular meal and snack times. Always eat meals at thetable. Children who eat meals with their family consume more fruits, vegetables, fiber, calcium-rich foods and vitamins.

• Once kids are old enough, encourage self-feeding as much as possible.• Avoid soda, which is full of empty calories or artificial sweeteners. Milk and wa-

ter are the best drink choices for your child. Offer whole milk or 2 percent milk tochildren ages 12 months to 2 years old, unless your pediatrician recommends low-fat milk. After age 2, offer low-fat milk. Limit juice to four to six ounces a day.

• Kids can be picky at first, but don’t let a refusal of a new food stop you fromtrying again. Offer new foods multiple times in multiple ways. For infants, you mayneed to even try 10 to 15 times over several months. Parents are extremely influ-ential and can serve as a child’s best role model. Eat a variety of foods of differentflavors, colors and textures.

Encourage active play• Don’t let a full day go by without active play. Take trips to the park, play in the

yard, go for walks and make physical activity a part of your family’s daily routine.Reduce the amount of time spent in devices that restrain movement, such asstrollers and bouncy seats.

• Limit screen time, including TV, video games and computers, to less than twohours a day. Avoid placing computers or television sets in children’s bedrooms sothey can get the best sleep possible.

• Encourage your kids to take part in sports teams, gymnastic and dance class-es, and other activities that will get them moving.

More ideas about healthy living for families can be found at www.healthychil-dren.org/growinghealthy.

“No matter how old your child is, it’s never too early to establish household rou-tines that foster healthy habits.” says McInerny.

by Samantha MazzottaCleaning up after the

holidaysHappy New Year! While

the holidays might notquite be over, planning forpost-holiday cleanup canhelp combat the winterblues and keep you frombeing that one house onthe block that has a holi-day wreath hanging onthe door until July.

Here are a few tips thatmight help holidaycleanup go a little easier:

• If you have a real tree, check with your local gov-ernment to find out if andwhen there is tree pickupand disposal in your

area. Otherwise, look fora tree disposal servicenearby. Remove and packaway all the tree orna-ments and decorations. The night before sched-uled disposal or pickup, prep the tree. If the dis-posal service wants it in atree bag, put the bag overthe tree and cover thetree fully while it’s still inits stand. With a helperholding the tree in place, loosen the trunk from thestand and carefully liftaway. Drain excess waterfrom the stand into asink, dry and store fornext year.

• When removing the

tree from the stand, don’tset the trunk down on thecarpet or floor, as sap willcreate a sticky mess.Don’t use the tree as fire-wood: It’s not seasonedand the branches mayhave been pre-treated atthe tree lot with chemi-

cals to prevent insects.• Use a shop vac to vac-

uum up pine needles, tin-sel and other small debrisfrom where the tree oncesat.

• Put used wrappingpaper into the recyclingbin -- don’t burn it in the

fireplace.• Tree sap on tile or

wood floors, or on protec-tive cloths, can becleaned with warm waterand soap. Sap on the car-pet should be dabbedwith a cloth dampenedwith rubbing alcohol un-

til the sap comes up.• Take down outdoor

Christmas lights and dec-orations in clear weather.Work with a partner anduse a sturdy ladder forlights on the roof eaves. Some DIYers replaceburnt bulbs when theytake down the lights, butI usually don’t, as I oftenhave to replace burned orbroken bulbs next holi-day season anyway. Wrapthe strands around apiece of cardboard tokeep them from tangling, and store in a dry, coolplace until next year.

HOME TIP: “To cleanup tinsel stuck in the car-pet, I put my grandkids towork by having them puton thick socks, stick fold-ed-over duct tape allalong the bottoms, andscoot around the floor! Itworks great! — Mary B.,Watertown, MA

There is one thing you have to give to the Irish. They are a very

truthful race. They never speak well of one another.

A 33 pound carp was caught in the Susquehanna River this

morning. No such fish has been taken from the Susquehanna for

years. The Susquehanna is born in Cooperstown and travels south,

ever growing larger until it reaches the Atlantic Ocean at Baltimore.

During the mid-spring and early summer, carp can be seen

swimming in Hayden Creek at the former Ryerson golf course, now

known as the Otsego Golf Club on the north end of Otsego Lake. Now

this big fish whopper could be thought to be a bit of blarney but it’s

not. However, the huge carp story appeared in the Williamsport, PA

Grit on July 18, 1982 and actually happened on June 5, 1910. So

that was the big news of the day 102 years ago.

Some of our local Mohawk Valley fishermen can remember catching

carp in the Mohawk River and selling their catch to a ready market

at the hotels in Sharon Springs. Carp was in demand for gefilte fish

with the Jewish guests in Sharon Springs during its busy years.

What would we do without a chuckle or two, especially at someone

else’s expense?

Mr. Mullarky asked the chemist, “Did that mudpack I asked you to

try improve your wife’s appearance?” “It surely did, but it kept falling

off.”

Murphy couldn’t understand how he injured his friend Pat so much,

as he explained to the judge, “Heavens to Betsy, all I had in me hand

when I hit him was me fist.”

My friend Bob, while doing carpentry work, was in the kitchen

looking for his hammer. When asked what he was looking for, he said

“I lost my hammer in the dining room.” “Then why are you looking for

it in the kitchen?” He answered, “There is more light here.”

Why is it every year we look forward to a white Christmas and then

complain when we get it. Today is December 27, 2012. It started to

snow about 8 p.m. last evening, December 26, and it is still snowing.

We enjoyed a little dusting Christmas morning.

If you’re young at heart, you love the snow and claim it is

absolutely beautiful: a winter wonderland. If you’re an old timer, that

is 10 years above retirement age, you probably are thinking – hope we

don’t have three more months of this, or, we should have gone to

Florida or at least as far south as Virginia or the Carolinas where

they claim it snows one day and it is gone the next. They tell me the

old-time hillbillies of West Virginia prepared for winter by stilling

enough moonshine to hold out until spring. Their excuse for daily

consumption was health reasons; it didn’t really cure anything but

with a few daily slugs of moonshine, you didn’t know you were sick.

Back in the late 1950’s I owned a garage in Cooperstown named

the Lee Goodyear Center. It was amazing. Two to three days before

a major snow storm, only a few purchased snow tires and the

morning of the first storm the garage, with its parking lot, was

packed with cars waiting for new Goodyear snow tires. Several of our

customers would come in to have chains mounted on the rear wheels

and occasionally front wheels too. Was this a good example of

procrastination or did they somehow convince themselves that this

year it wouldn’t snow? Recap snow tires manufactured by a Richfield

Springs re-capper were in big demand. They were called wire treads.

The more worn the wire treads became the better they would dig in.

I wonder did we think they were the good old days? A winter

wonderland or an excellent chance to get stuck in a snow bank.

Twenty-some-odd years ago we spent the Christmas holidays with

my brother and his family in Portadown, Ireland. In a normal year,

Ireland has only a dusting of snow but that year the television

weather station claimed it was the heaviest snow fall in over 50

years.

During the morning weather report, the man in charge of all of the

country’s roads made this statement; “We know we have a snow plow

somewhere, but can’t find it.” Can you imagine? – one snow plow for

all of Northern Ireland?

Three men, a democrat, a republican, and a non-political

party/non-voter were having a political based conversation. The

question was asked, “What do you have when you have a bunch of

republicans and democrats up to their necks in wet cement?”

The non-voter said, “Not enough cement.”

Soon 2012 will become part of our history. History that each of us

helped to create, for we do not walk this life without leaving our own

footprints. We have made new friends, said goodbye to others. For

some new family members have been added while others have gone

on. The Holy Bible teaches that we will all leave this life eventually —

everyone — with no exceptions.

With the arrival of a new year, it is only natural to look into the

future and attempt to learn from the past. It appears we all depend

upon certain types of road maps to show us the way. A road map is

helpful in our earthly travels.

However, when this lifetime trip comes to a close, there is only one

map that we can trust — the Holy Bible.

My prayer for all of my family and friends is they will take time to

find the way taught by the good Lord through his word — the Bible.

God bless you and your family and friends.

Thank you for reading Hello Again.

by David UffingtonHow to deal quicklywith holiday debt

Did you overspend dur-ing the holidays? Haveyou loaded up your creditcards with debt? It’s easyto do. Retailers go all outto get consumers to let goof cash, and there’s thenot-so-small desire toprovide a happy seasonfor loved ones.

Now, however, it’s timeto take a hard look at thedebt that’s been incurred.

When the bills arrive inJanuary, open them im-mediately. Make a chartshowing the total balanceand the minimummonthly payment foreach. Decide how muchyou can pay monthly oneach one until all the bal-ances are brought tozero. At the very least, pay a few dollars morethan the minimum, asthis is something thatgoes on your credit re-port.

Check the interestrates and put extra mon-ey into the payments forthose cards with higherrates. Ideally, you shouldbe able to pay off all yourholiday debt in three pay-ments, if not sooner. Ifyou can’t, add extra mon-ey to those payments tothe extent you reasonablycan. As you pay off onecard, use that paymentamount to put extra onanother card paymenteach month.

Here’s what happens ifyou let the debts lingerand only make minimumpayments:

You’ll keep paying moreinterest. A sale item is nolonger a sale item onceyou add months of inter-est to its cost.

Your buying power isdiminished. You’re payingtoday with money youhaven’t earned yet.

Your borrowing poweris reduced. In the event ofan emergency where you

must take out a loan, youmight be limited in howmuch you can borrow be-cause of the debt you’vealready taken on.

Your credit score cantake a hit if you’ve put toomuch on your creditcards. Going over a cer-tain percentage of totalcredit availability showsup as a negative in yourscore, and it will continuethat way until you payenough of the balance. Ifthe excess debt leads to

late payments or payingonly minimum payments, your credit score will suf-fer.

Debt hangs over yourhead, day after day. Itdoesn’t go away — untilyou pay it off.

If you received cash forholiday gifts, consider us-ing that to bring downsome of your debt.

Dollars and sense

by Matilda CharlesResolve to live a less-

serious lifeI’ll share with you what

my biggest New Year’sresolution is going to be. Iresolve to become less se-rious this year.

To this end, I’m goingto:

• Turn off the televisioncompletely at least one

day a week. The news israrely good, and the com-mercials are increasinglyabout drugs for seriousdiseases. If I need toknow what the weatherwill be like tomorrow orthe next day, the WeatherChannel will let me knowwithout also filling myhead with all the more se-rious news of the day.

• Read humorous au-thors. To name a few,Rita M. Brown, FannyFlagg and Garrison Keil-lor come to mind. The li-brarian will be able tosuggest others, I’m sure.

• Revisit the books ofmy childhood and see if Istill love them. “The Box-car Children,” a few Nan-cy Drew mysteries and

“Huckleberry Finn” areon my list.

• Subscribe online to ajoke a day. They’ll comeby email, and they’repromised to be suitablefor everyone. I’ll even takea few elephant jokes. (Re-member those?)

• Order pizza (or some-thing similar) delivered tomy house once a month.

No, it’s not on my diet, but that’s the point. Onthat day I won’t cook ordo dishes after dinner.

• Revive my stamp col-lection. No, I won’t spenda lot of money on it, butthere are a few stampsthat could fill in someblanks on the pages. It’llbe relaxing to flip throughthe pages, attend the

monthly stamp and coinshow, and talk to peoplewho are in love withstamps.

Who knows ... I mightget to like this less-seri-ous lifestyle. Want to joinme? Start making yourlist!

(StatePoint) — Thereare many popular NewYear’s resolutions thatquickly come and go: eat-ing healthy, losingweight, managing stressand saving money. In2013, why not focus onone health change you’llenjoy sticking to... gettingmore sleep.

According to the Na-tional Sleep Foundation, the average Americansleeps about six hours

and 55 minutes per nightduring the week, and 15percent of adults sleepless than six hours pernight.

“Lack of sleep can takea significant toll on youroverall health and inter-fere with some of yourdaily activities,” said Dr.Michael Thorpy, directorof the Sleep-Wake Disor-ders Center at the Monte-fiore Medical Center inNew York.

Almost everybody hastrouble sleeping now andthen, but many Ameri-cans experience signifi-cant problems getting tosleep or continually wakeup in the middle of the

night and can’t fall backasleep.

Such problems may beclinical symptoms of in-somnia. According to the

National Sleep Founda-tion, if you have troublefalling asleep at night orstaying asleep, or youwake up in the morningfeeling unrefreshed, youmay be suffering from in-

somnia.Insomnia can affect

people in different ways. Some sufferers havetrouble initially getting to

sleep, while others wakeup in the middle of thenight and have difficultyfalling back asleep.

To help you get bettersleep this year, Dr. Thor-py suggests these simple

tips:• Set and stick to a

sleep schedule. Establisha regular bedtime andwake time.

• Set aside time atnight to “wind down.”Spend some quiet timebefore bedtime. Such ac-tivities as watching TV,using the computer orworking right before bed-time, or in the bedroom, can make it harder to fallasleep.

• Avoid caffeine and al-cohol before bed.

• Exercise regularly.Just don’t exercise rigor-ously near bedtime andcheck with your doctorbefore starting an exer-cise regimen.

• Don’t clock-watch. Ifyou awaken in the middleof the night and stay inbed, don’t lie there star-ing at the clock. Anddon’t watch TV or useyour laptop or cell phone, because these technolo-gies stimulate the brain, making it tougher to fallback to sleep.

If these tips don’t help, speak with your health-care professional to helpdetermine if you are suf-fering from insomnia andrequire treatment.

More information re-garding insomnia is avail-able at the National SleepFoundation website atwww.sleepfoundation.org.
