David Stillman Family, Friends and a Fraternity Chapter Mourn a Loss Quite literally hundreds of mourners gathered at Kaufmann Funeral Home recently to pay their final respects to brother Dave Stillman. As the first member of the Zeta Pi Chapter to pass, Dave's death has sent Shockwaves of grief and reality coursing through our group. Dave, a member of our first pledge class, one of our first Second Counselors, winner of the highest grade point award and our only member to attend and graduate from law school was skiing in Switzerland with his fiance when, on the expert run, he plunged several hundred feet off a cliff. These are the details we've tried to collect and disseminate to the rest of the chapter. But no matter how much we preoccupied ourselves with the details, none of us could escape the real issues that were clouding our minds: • Each day brings us one day closer to our last — and while we hope it will be decades from now — it could be tomorrow. • If our life, or another's life, can be taken from us so unexpectedly — are we doing everything we can to make the most of our friendships and our families? Do we really treat each other like tomorrow could be our last? How would we want to be remembered by the people we cared about? What impact would we want our passing to have on their lives? I can't answer these last questions for Dave, because I unfortunately never discussed them with him. However, I would like to speculate on his reaction. I think Dave would have been pleased to Christmas Party The annual alumni Christmas party is coming up soon at a place and time yet to be determined. Party planners are looking for an alumnus who might like to have the party (for Alumni Association members) at their home. If you might like to have a subsidized party at your home during the Christmas season, contact Chris Riley at 313 650-2917. If you haven't paid your dues yet, contact Brian Mahlmeister A.S.A.P. see how many brothers gathered to attend his funeral. I think he would have particularly appreciated our desire to meet for lunch afterwords and reminisce and to unwind from a stressful event. More than any of this though, I think Dave would have been pleased to see how the brothers of the Zeta Pi Chapter came together to console and comfort each other in a time of crisis. The meticulous efforts to contact everyone and keep them informed; the groups of five and ten brothers that gathered because they just wanted to be together — all of tbis, I think, would have made Dave proud to be a member of such a real and true brotherhood. It has done so for me. I miss you Dave. A New Bun in the Oven Congratulations to the Peterson family and the Hardiek family. You all know about the first "bundles of joy" to grace these two families — but did you know that Carol Peterson and Diane Hardiek are pregnant again? Sorry, but at press time I still don't have any details like when they are due (or what they were thinking) but you can call them yourselves for the gory details. I guess some people just can't get enough of a good thing! Palace Fundraiser! The Alumni Assoc. will participate in two fundraisers in November with proceeds to the Christmas party. We need your help on Nov. 12 and 21. Call Bryan Mahlmeister to RSVP.
