Research MethodologyAim : To know the Family environment and Adjustment of
Institutionalized women
Design : Descriptive research design.
Methods of data collection: personal in-depth interview
with interview guide, and observation
Universe of the study : includes all women residents of the
Governmental and non-governmental institutions in Karnataka
Sampling technique : was judgmental according to the
category of women residents with excluding criteria of
mentally ill women.

Major findings Profile of the residents shows that, all religious category women were admitted in
both Governmental and non- Governmental institutions.
Majority of them had completed SSLC and a highest qualification of bachelor’s
degree and Engineering graduation.
18-28 years age group members are high in number when compared to
adolescent age group members.
More than 95 percentage residents came from low socio economic background
and very few had a background considered to be middle income group of
Karnataka.

Major findingsThere are no adequate opportunities in these institutions for
enduring emotional relationships which are basic to the adaption of individual’s personal and social needs.
As a result their basic needs will be hammered and they grow up with poor mental health.
Lack of psychological interaction and absence of specialized care are disadvantages of these institutions.
Maladjustment in the personality is one of the reasons for
destitution.
Women residents from broken family background showed the ill
adjustment levels.

Major findings This result supports the studies relating to adjustment that, socio-
economic status have consistently shown that those from lower socio
economic backgrounds are more maladjusted (Parameswaran, 1957;
Reddy, 1971;Shukla and Mishra, 1980).
According to the authorities, these women are highly talkative, easily
suggestible, irresponsible, unskilled, and highly emotional.
They are failed making adjustment with their family members..
Financial problems at home, marital disharmony, domestic violence,
alcoholism and sexual harassment were the major reasons of the

Conclusion This study proves that, case studies can be very effective way of
presenting profiles of different groups within a study population.
Authors conclude that, there are difference in adjustment levels
of women from different background. Also states, not only
psychological factors but physical environment also affects the
adjustment level of these women and interventions should
concentrate on these factors.
