‘Thunderbirds’ has a special place in the hearts of many. As iconic as the puppets and innovative model making of the show, Barry Gray’s “Thunderbirds” theme is unrivalled in its instantly recognisable energy and swagger, brilliantly adding a sense of exhilaration to the original adventures of the Tracy brothers.

It was crucial when starting work on the score for this new “Thunderbirds” series that we remembered the huge influence that its bold, brassy sound had on us as children watching the re-runs many years ago. Our aim was to retain that thrilling spirit whilst helping bring this new show to life, and provide an emotional grounding and character depth for a show full of narrative whip turns and fast paced action, to guide the viewer through each episode’s rollercoaster ride.

We wanted the score to match the ambition of the animators, writers, designers and directors who have been creating mini-movies with a real sense of danger and high stakes, and characters with a real emotional pull.

To help us achieve these aims, each episode of “Thunderbirds Are Go” is fully scored with a combination of full orchestra, solo instruments and quirky synth textures to give the show a real sense of its own world. The scores are heavily thematic, from the heroic brass underscoring the Tracy Brothers’ action sequences, to the jazzy strings and flute of the ever-glamorous Lady Penelope, via the eerie electronics of the beautiful visuals set in outer space, where Thunderbird 5 orbits the earth. By writing this way, the themes work as a shorthand

for the viewer, helping guide them through the quick changes in mood and action, to suspend reality and to immerse them in the thrilling world of “Thunderbirds Are Go”.

At the heart of our sonic world is the live orchestra, so rare in episodic television nowadays, but crucial in terms of scale and heart. We genuinely hope and believe that by using it, we can stir up in younger viewers the will to discover what instruments play these heroic themes and perhaps take them up themselves. This is exactly how both our composers Ben and Nick Foster were inspired to take up music as a life-long passion, and we are thrilled and proud of the immense contribution they have both made to the series.
