A Family Sing-Along with African American SpiritualsIn this Family workshop, Karen will lead you through a vocal warm up and teach you three African American spirituals. Participants will gain an insight to the Legacy of African American spirituals. We will briefly discuss the origins and meaning of the songs and then practice and perform them. Songs of Resistance: The Jewish WWII ExperienceMusic was an important part of Jewish resilience during the Second World War. In the first portion of this interactive, informative workshop we will learn Jewish WWII resistance songs, and engage in a light overview of historical context. For participants who would like to take a more in-depth look at this issue, during the second half the teacher will share a more detailed and personal perspective from her family ’s history during this important, impactful era. Mindful PracticeThis workshop is for those who want to learn about the Alexander Technique and how to apply the aligning principles of the Technique to musical practice. Musical MeditationWould you like to get away from the stress and uncertainty of the world for a moment? If so, come attend this relaxing, interactive workshop. A simple nondenominational guided musical meditation will be offered with the intention of drawing the listener inwards to the peace and stillness within. Everyone is encouraged to add to the music with their voice or an instrument if so inclined with their microphone off. A question and answer will be offered before and after the meditation. The Misunderstood RecorderMany of us are familiar with the recorder from fourth grade classrooms! Did you know that it was once revered and played in royal courts across Europe? This beautiful instrument is used to play so much more than just the simple classic “Hot Cross Buns”. Come to this informative workshop, and you will learn about the historical context of the recorder, as well as the correct technique of playing it. We will also discuss how the recorder has had an important role in the Baroque period, and the evolution of the instrument over the 20th and 21st Centuries. Families are welcome to observe. Do you want to learn more about how to make cool sounds on electric guitar? Come to this workshop and learn about the common controls on guitar amplifiers and effects pedals as well as common musical applications. In addition, we will explore the sounds and differences between effects as well as how to incorporate them into their rig. Getting the Most Out of Your Online LessonsThis workshop is for woodwind and brass students of all levels. We will discuss topics including the logistics of online lessons, how to set up your video conferencing software, how to configure your audio settings, suggestions for home audio/video equipment, and how to approach the differences between online and in person learning. Music by Black ComposersThis informative, interactive workshop will introduce students to a range of repertoire written by Black composers from around the world, using a newly-published volume of pieces for beginner to elementary violin players. We will learn about the history of Black composers in the classical music tradition and learn specifically about the biographies of a few. Performing Virtually - A Workshop for String PlayersThese days, many of us are faced with needing to perform virtually in concerts and recitals.
