SFPGA Southwest Chapter President Report
October 7th, 2019
Dear PGA Professionals and Associates,
Welcome to the Southwest Florida Chapter PGA Fall Meeting. I hope that you have all enjoyed your summer. I
am certain preparations are underway for the upcoming busy season, so I am grateful that you have decided to
join us on this day.
Being President of this Chapter brings great responsibility – and I do not take that lightly. I do believe that this
office can be an agent for change and there are new programs under consideration and being formed. Today,
we will talk about new efforts that are being made regarding our charitable giving. Our Association is one that
takes pride in giving back to our community and I would like to see that restored in our Chapter. We have great
opportunities to work with our Section Foundation and contribute to worthy programs which will help grow the
game and make a difference in people’s lives. Junior Golf is still a big need, but programs such as PGA Hope also
need our support and we can make a difference if we all choose to do so.
I am also going to be presenting a new plan for mentoring in our Chapter. There is certainly a need for us to be
working for each other in order to better build our brand. Continuing education exists in many forms, but there
is nothing like one on one training and conversations with some of the most experienced and brightest minds
in our business.
Partner development and retention is another important piece of business that needs discussion. These
relationships contribute to our ability to provide better programs for the members of this Chapter such as
tournaments, education and potentially social programs. However, this takes a collective effort and I will speak
to that today.
Finally, please know I am available for your thoughts, ideas and concerns regarding both the Chapter. I will
certainly do my best for any of you and I look forward to providing a voice to the Section on behalf of our
Chapter. You can reach me at [email protected] or at 239-694-4229.
Warm Regards,
Nathan Groce, PGA

SFPGA Southwest Chapter Secretary Report
Dear PGA Professionals and Associates, I am humbled, energized and grateful to serve everyone in the Southwest Chapter this year as the
Secretary. The goal of this Board is to enhance your PGA Membership so please feel free to contact me at
239-774-1443 or [email protected] if you have any questions, comments, or ideas to share.
I believe one of the best things we do as PGA Professionals is help each other and share ideas and these
meetings are a perfect opportunity to do so. I’d like to share a “Best Practice” with you: at my Club most of
our members are extremely patriotic, therefore, at all of our major golf events, we have one of the
members sing the National Anthem during the announcements. Our members greatly appreciate it and it
gives everyone a great feeling as they go out to play. Now I hope you share with each other some of your
club’s best practices at your table today.
Please join me in celebrating the life of Lawrence Padula, PGA who passed away on September 9th, 2019. He was a PGA Life Member in our Chapter and we wish to thank him for his service to our Association. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

SFPGA Southwest Chapter Assistants Chairperson Report
Dear PGA Members and Associates,
I hope all of you had a great summer. The Assistants’ Group had a very successful tournament season. It could
not have been possible without the generous course offerings from the clubs and professionals listed below.
We are very fortunate to have strong support from our local community of facilities to afford us the
opportunity to play.
Our final event of the year (36 Hole Stroke Play Championship) is set to take place on Monday, October 14th at
West Bay Club. There is still time to register if you have not done so already.
I would like to extend a big thank you to all of the assistants who attended our events this summer. I hope that
each of you relished the opportunity to compete, network and unwind with your fellow assistants as much as I
did. These events would not be as enjoyable if it were not for your participation and camaraderie.
Lastly, I am open to any suggestions that can make this group even better next year. Please feel free to reach
out!
Sincerely,
Sean McGinness, PGA Southwest Chapter Assistants’ Chairperson Foxfire Country Club

SFPGA Southwest Chapter Tournament Chairperson Report
Dear Southwest Chapter PGA Members and Associates:
As we enter the fall season, our tournament season is quickly coming to a close. We have a few remaining events set to be held. Through all the challenging weather situations we had another outstanding year, as participation and competition was excellent across all events.
This season we decided to lower the SW Chapters player’s card to $40 thinking we would get more
participation. This ended up not being the case. With lower Sponsorship money and less player’s card money,
the purse for each event was dramatically affected. We have decided to take the SW Chapters player card
back to the original amount of $85 for the 2020 season.
We also are looking to simplify the SW Chapter player’s card and the SW Chapter Global Golf Sales Card. It
seems every year there is a lot of confusion on which one a player needs to buy. We are looking into a
solution, there will be more details on what we decide to do soon.
Next season we would like to expand the tournament schedule with the possible addition of a Pro-Scratch as
well as a Pro Superintendent. These events through the section have been very well participated and we feel
it would be a good addition to the SW Chapter tournament schedule.
At the end of this tournament season I will be stepping down as your tournament chairperson. I really
enjoyed the opportunity and the experienced that I gained. With my new role as the Director of Golf at the
Club at Gateway I feel I will not be able to put the time and effort needed into running all of the events.
If you are someone looking for a challenge, a resume builder, or recognition this is a great opportunity to fulfill
all of that. If you are someone that would like to get involved, please feel free to reach out to either myself or
Nathan Groce.
Lastly, I encourage professionals to be responsive and receptive of future committees when they call on you to
host events at your facility. Hosting events for our professionals is a unique opportunity to showcase your
facility, particularly during the slower summer season.
Thank you to all our professionals who stepped up this year and hosted events, some even two-chapter events
along with assistant and senior tournaments!
Information and registration for our final events of the season: Pro-Assistant can be found on the section
website.
Thank you for your time, and best of luck with the upcoming season.
See you soon, Chris Shultis, PGA Director of Golf – The Club at Gateway Southwest Chapter Tournament Chairperson

SFPGA Southwest Chapter Education Chairperson Report
October 7, 2019
This summer we had the introduction of the section education series sponsored by Club Benchmarking. These
events were focused delivering seminars that address many of the issues we are currently facing. The idea to
allow the section to take the lead was to give an opportunity to provide similar events in each chapter. Our
chapter conducted an additional event, a Golf Genius Workshop, which was once again well attended. Due to
Hurricane Dorian one event was postponed and will now be conducted only on the east coast. The event will
be held on October 24th at Fort Lauderdale Country Club. Visit www.sfpgagolf.com to register.
In all, 14 MSRs were offered this summer. There are still plenty of opportunities for additional MSRs, including
the option to attend the multiple 2020 World Handicap Seminars offered by the FSGA. There are also two
other opportunities, FGCU will once again host a Rules of Golf seminar on Monday, October 28th from 8:30am
to 11:30am. Lastly, the section will be conducting its Annual Teaching Symposium supported by SuperSpeed
Golf & TrueSpec will be held on October 17 & 18 at Country Club of Mirasol. The three guest speakers are Dr.
Alison Curdt, PGA; Charlie King, PGA; and Bob Grissett. This is a great opportunity to gain up to 14 MSR credits.
If you would like additional details or to register by visiting www.sfpgagolf.com.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank a few people that have provided their assistance or facility
for our events this past summer. Thank you to Tim Miller and Andrea Drake from Vanderbilt, Travis Wehrs
from Fiddlesticks and Scott Kash from Spring Run for offering their facilities. Thank you to Kathy Grayson,
Marty Hall, Dr. Jim Butler, Jason Becker, Joe Groch, Linnet Carty and Mandy Long for their input and
information provided at our various events.
If you have any topic suggestions, feedback or would like additional information regarding our education
events, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or at 781-367-1820.
Respectfully,
Paul Fitzpatrick, PGA

SFPGA Southwest Chapter Junior Golf Chairperson Report
Dear Fellow PGA Members,
The junior golf committee continues to strive in its efforts to make the Southwest Florida Chapter a leader in
junior golf. We continue to search out new opportunities for events to encourage junior golf.
The summer junior golf season flew by! Thank you to all PGA Professionals that hosted events at their course
this summer. Without your hospitality we wouldn’t to be able to have these great events.
Our numbers were up by 100% in participation in PGA Junior League this year increasing from 40 juniors to 80
in our chapter. We were able to have two leagues from which we chose two all-star teams that competed last
month in the section qualifier at PGA Golf Club in Port Saint Lucie. If you are interested in creating a team next
year and need any information, please reach out to me.
This past weekend the South Florida Section hosted a High School Invitational at Boca West and Boca Grove
where they had over 120 juniors participate. If you are a high school coach and are interested in getting your
team in, they will be having the tournament again next year.
The regional final for the Drive, Chip, and Putt was held at TPC Sawgrass on Saturday 28th of September. We
had ten juniors from our chapter who competed for a chance to go to Augusta. Unfortunately, this year none
of our juniors qualified for Augusta.
The South Florida PGA is currently hosting Team Golf and Links Tour events through November. This is a great
opportunity for any kids looking to start their tournament experience in a fun environment. The next events
are:
October 6th – The Glades October 19th- Quail Creek One final event TBA
If you want to get more involved and looking for any opportunities, please reach to me!
Warmest regards,
Bobby Conway, PGA
