    DEL ORO GOLDEN EAGLES

Del Oro’s anybody, anyplace anytime preseason

BY MIKE RAYOF THE LOOMIS NEWS

In 2001, Fresno Statefootball coach Pat Hillsaid it first: “Anybody,

anyplace, anytime.” And, that season, his

Bulldogs did just that.Opening the 2001 cam-paign on the road, FresnoState took down Colorado

in Boulder and Wisconsinat Camp Randall beforereturning home andknocking off Sports Illus-trated pre-season No.1Oregon State, 38-24, in agame that wasn’t as closeas the final score mightindicate.

Now, Del Oro footballcoach Taylor is laying claim

to the “Anybody, Anyplace, Anywhere” theme. And,once again to live up totheir reputation this sea-son, he has compiled acompelling 2015 footballslate for his Golden Eagles.

“We’re a blue-collarteam from a blue-collararea,” Taylor said at last week’s MaxPreps MediaDay held at the 49ers LeviStadium in Santa Clara.

“There are schools thatdon’t want to play us, but we’ll play anyone.”

So, if you thought thatknocking helmets in recent years against the likes of De La Salle, Oceanside,Loyola of Los Angeles,Oaks Christian, Westlake,James Logan, Bishop Gor-man, Serra of San Mateo,

Clovis West, Cardinal New-man, Kennedy of Seattleand Lake City of Couerd’Alene, Idaho, wasn’t rig-orous enough, well, thatmay seem like a walk in thepark compared to theGolden Eagles’ 2015 non-league slate.

Doing it Taylor’s way —“Anytime, Anyplace, Any- where” — has produced arecord of 85-33 with two

CIF State bowl appear-ances at Del Oro since2006, one of the top marksin the CIF Sac-JoaquinSection. And that recordhas not come at the handsof too many softies.

“We’re real excited forthis season,” Taylor said.“We are really expecting some big things. We play

some great teams. There’sbeen a sense of urgency all spring and summer toget ready. We’re really looking forward to it.”

Del Oro will once againbe tested with a tough Sier-ra Foothill League slate with games against Rock-lin, Granite Bay, Folsom, Woodcreek and NevadaUnion. However, here’s alook at what to expect from

Del Oro’s four non-leaguefoes this season:

    Aug. 28 – Pleasant Grove,

Utah atDel Oro – PleasantGrove is a school of 1,900students in three gradeslocated midway betweenProvo and Salt Lake City. Although just 5-5 last sea-son after a 4-1 start, Pleas-ant Grove ventured west in

    No mountain too high

Del Oro senior Try Udoffia will have one moreseason to give the Sierra Foothill League fitsbefore moving on to play of the University ofColorado next year.

2014 to defeat Torrey Pinesin San Diego, 49-36.

While the Vikings gradu-ated their top rusher andpasser, the team seems tobe in good hands at quar-terback in the form of Isaac Hamilton (6-5, 200).Hamilton, a junior who was last season’s backupas a sophomore, is the sonof Pleasant Grove headcoach Les Hamilton and will run the Vikings’ up-tempo no huddle offense. The team’s top tworeceivers return in Cole-man Edwards (75x842, 6

TDs) and Malik Overstreet(48x708, 8 TDs).The Vikings will also be

    massive up front with Walk-er Wolfgramm (6-3, 285),Connor Ullman (6-3, 275)and P.J. Tauteoli (6-3, 325).

Viking coach LesHamilton is no stranger toCalifornia as he preppedat Petaluma High and afew years back coachedthe Alta Loma team fromUtah that played Grant.

Sept. 4 – Punahou(Honolulu, Hi.) vs. Del Oroat Memorial Stadium,Berkeley – In a game thatis being played as part of the Brothers in ArmsShowcase and could have

President Obama inattendance, the GoldenEagles will line-up against

perennial Hawaii statepower Punahou. Puna-hou, after winning theHawaii state title in 2013,fell in the state finals lastseason to Milliani. Return-ing for the Buff ‘n Blueare quarterback EphraimTuliloa, a 6-foot-2, 228-pound pro-style passer who completed nearly 68percent of his passes last year. He has offers fromColorado and UNLV. Atrunning back, meanwhile, will be Wayne Taulapapa(5-11, 202) who rushedclose to 1,000 yards in nine

games as a junior. Taula-papa has offers from BYU,Colorado, and UNLV.

Sept. 11  –  Bellarmine (San Jose, Ca.) at Del Oro –  While the Sierra FoothillLeague touts itself as oneof the toughest footballleagues in Northern Cali-fornia, the West Catholic Athletic League which ismade up of schools fromSan Francisco down thepeninsula to San Jose may  want to dispute that.

With that in mind, theGolden Eagles figure to bein tough when they collidein the Honor Bowl on Sept.11 with perennial WCALpower Bellarmine. The

Bells, who run a ground-oriented double-wing offense that the GoldenEagles do not see often, were 10-3 a year ago andreached the CIF CentralCoast Section open divi-sion semifinal round in theplayoffs.

    De La Salle (Concord) –

Del Oro doesn’t need any introduction playing theSpartans, who will open

the season as the nation’sNo. 1 team according toMaxPreps.

The Spartans, 14-0 a year ago when they defeat-

ed Del Oro, 52-0, and wenton to win the CIF’s StateOpen Bowl, are loadedonce again. This is the

third straight season thetwo teams will meet.

Coach Justin Alumbaughhas two proven quarter-backs in seniors Anthony

Sweeney and Chris Van-derlugt. The running game will once again be strong as Anthony Hernandez (1,804,

30 TDs), Nick Lopez (534,6TDs) and Antoine Custerall return. The line will beled by Div. I prospect BossTagaloa (6-3, 295).

    REVIEW

GOLDEN EAGLES SET SIGHTS ON THE FUTURE

BY JIM LINSDAUOF THE LOOMIS NEWS

Finishing with a 6-6 record last season may seemwell below Del Oro football’s expectations, but thegoal of the Loomis club is to be the best by beatingthe best – it just didn’t happen last year.

The Golden Eagles lost three of their first fivegames and absorbed a 52-0 loss to state powerhouseDe La Salle. But they will return to Concord onceagain Oct. 23 to take another shot at the Spartans.

That philosophy may seem a little self-destructive, butDel Oro no longer plays to impress, they play to win.

Even after the 2-3 start, the Eagles went 4-2 in theSierra Foothill League to again qualify for the CIFSac-Joaquin Section Playoffs. In the last 10 years, theyhave missed only one postseason.

In conjunction with a loaded preseason, Del Orogets little relief in SFL play. Last year they lost twoleague games, including a 42-7 setback to Division Istate champion Folsom.

Although Del Oro graduated19 players off the2014 team, head coach Casey Taylor has 19 seniorsstepping up this season. Last year’s junior varsityteam was 5-3-1 and 4-2 in the SFL. Go Golden Eagles!

10 September 2015 FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2015 Supplement to Gold Country Media

    BY JIM LINSDAU

    OF THE NEWS MESSENGER

W ith the 2014 seasona faded memory, the Lincoln High

football team is anticipat-ing its first real year of bringing a new brand of football to Fighting Zebras’

    fans. Although the concept

that football is a game in which the team that blocksand tackles the best willsucceed, the approachtoday is not all tackling dummies and blocking sleds. Now, the terms“more sophisticated,”“higher level” and “more

    exciting” are bandied

about — the sport hasevolved. They days of 3 yards and

a cloud of dust are now thedays of spread offenses, multiple sets and flex defenses. However, theteam that blocks and tack-les the best is still likely to win the game.

“Every coach will tell you… , it’s physicality. Youhave to get kids to do what

for some seems unnatural;especially when you’relooking at an offensive lineand you’re saying, ‘Hey look, you’ve got to pushthis guy out of this hole,’”said Lincoln High headcoach Chris Bean. “Thislinebacker is still in and you’ve got to go up and goshoulder to shoulder and

    square up against this guy.

Sometimes it’s physicality that gets that hole open.”But make no mistake

about it, Bean is not just atask master cracking a whip and demanding ulti-mate sacrifice – there is asophisticated, high-level,more exciting plan to go with it.

“It’s just a great environ-ment to play in,” said four- year lineman Robert McK-

eon, who weighs in at 260pounds and measures 6-feet-3-inches in height.“Obviously, it didn’t work so well the first season, butthat was due to difficultiesin coaching not being ableto get here in time.”

When Bean arrived onthe Lincoln campus a littlemore than a year ago, he

     was already months

behind in taking over theprogram. He and hiscoaching corps had tocombine new and exciting  with fundamental football. Not an easy thing to do in agame where people aretrying to run over you.

“I think … this team isdoing better chemistry- wise and we have a lotmore talent this year thanlast year,” said quarterback

Eli Garcia. “We have a real-ly good line that’s a goodpart and our defense islooking better this year.”

League campaign due toan injury he sustainedagainst Union Mine, saidthe no-huddle offensetook some time to getused to.

Family, community andquality are all traits Beanembraces since building character is as, if notmore, important to Beanthan building football

players. Yet, it is wellknown the high schoolexperience of playing football remains with aplayer his entire life.

“We’re hearing greatthings about our kidsfrom different places,”Bean said of the team’sexperiences this summer. We … heard great thingsabout our kids. They were

so impressed with ourkids and how they han-dled themselves; their

respect for each other andthe game.”

Although the Zebrashave good depth and sizeon the line this season, they also have a lot of  young players filling theirranks. Of the 21 linemenon the 2015 roster, sevenare seniors.

“The worst part is (we)probably have a sopho-

more, three juniors and asenior on that offensiveline,” Bean said. “If we canget them to get physical inthose pads, they’re big, they’re strong, they’re pow-erful, it should be pretty fun to watch if they can getto that next level.”

It the linemen can get tothat level, the backfieldsfor both the offense and

the defense can make thesophistication, high leveland exciting happen.

With the return of someoutstanding talent likequarterback Garcia, run-ning backs Eli Cunning-ham and Tanner Keeler, and wide receiver CalebKettlehut the offense islooking sharp.

“We kind of finalizedthings we weren’t sure

about. We’re starting toexecute better,” said Cun-ningham, who will fill sev-eral roles in the spreadoffense. “We’re starting to

get more physical. Since we’re going no-huddle,(fans) will be able to see

our speed, our condition-ing, our endurance.”On defense, juniors Dar-

ius Bunger, Cody Sharpand senior linebacker Jef-frey Jones are helping tomake life easier for Beanand his coaches.

Jones was moved fromfree safety, where heplayed last year, to outsidelinebacker. Jones said themove was made to help

Lincoln to better defendagainst the run, but hasalso been working just ashard to defend the pass.

“When I was free safety, I

was a big hitting free safety. My biggest job was stillstopping the run,” Jones

said. “For me, I’ve been working really hard onpass coverage and getting down my reads. So this year, we’ll be able to stopthe pass and run very  well.”

Although Bean had toreplace a couple of coach-es who were unable toreturn this season, Beansaid the change did notslow the team’s progress.

    REVIEW

FIGHTING ZEBRAS DISMISS PREVIOUS 1-9 SEASON

    JIM LINSDAU

    OF THE NEWS MESSENGER

Anyone who has spent some time on the LincolnHigh football practice field would not know they areobserving a team that was 1-9 last season. And it isnot because the Fighting Zebras have nowhere to gobut up. It is because they believe they could well be9-1 this season – or better.

Head coach Chris Bean did not take over the 2014team until June that year. He had three months toprepare his new club for a system Lincoln playerswere totally unfamiliar with. After absorbing losses intheir first three games by an average score of 32-21,they beat Highway 65 rival Wheatland 23-16 andappeared to have turned the corner.

But in the following game at Union Mine, juniorquarterback Eli Garcia fractured his forearm and waslost for the season. Lincoln scored 32 points in thatgame, but lost.

In the Zebras’ final five Pioneer Valley League con-tests, Lincoln averaged less than 11 points a game.

And one of those losses was a 27-26 overtimeheartbreaker to Foothill. It was the only victory theMustangs had that season, other than a forfeit victo-ry by Union Mine.

The Zebras saw 23 of its seniors depart last spring,22 help fill a roster of 53 this season, including ahealthy Garcia.

Their top rusher is gone, but No. 2 Eli Cunningham(No. 2 scoring) and No. 3 Tanner Keeler (No. 4 scor-ing) are back. Keeler was also No. 3 in pass receptions

and leading receiver Cameron McClure returns alongwith Caleb Kettlehut (No.2) and PJ Manley (No.4).On defense, No. 2 tackler in 2014 Jeffrey Jones returns

with sack specialist Darius Bunger. In the backfield, inter-ceptions leader Anthony Herrera comes back looking formore thefts to add to his credit.

Another Zebras’ plus, the starting offense andstarting defense will not have to see action on theother side of the ball.

All of this is wrapped up in one of the strongestoffensive lines Lincoln has had in some time.Although anchored by junior Chad Bagwell (6-4, 285)at center, seniors Robert McKeon (6-3, 26), and Bran-den Lessard (6-1, 180) join him.

Lincoln opens play Friday at Ponderosa, a teamthat finished 5-5 last season. Go Fighting Zebras!

The Lincoln High football offense takes on a different look and will operate out of a no-huddle system.

    WHITNEY WILDCATS

    BY JIM LINSDAU

    OF THE PLACER HERALD

If the Whitney Highfootball team was dis-couraged by its one-

win season last year, onecould not tell it by thenumber of players whohave turned out to try andearn a spot on the Wild-cats’ 2015 roster.

Whitney is not used tolosing and last year isappears to be ancient his-tory with nearly 70 juniors

and seniors out for footballthis season. Whether it is inanticipation of a new eraunder new head coachPaul Doherty or a determi-nation to erase all doubtsabout that 2014 was thestart of a trend, the Wild-cats are geared for go time.

Doherty came in know-ing Wildcats football was

about winning, as is any  Wildcats’ athletic program, but he was bringing some-thing new. With such alarge turnout of players, the ‘Cats are apparently undaunted by the change.

Doherty brings with himhis version of the highly successful spread offense.

“I don’t know that youcan really label offensesanymore outside of the wing T. People run thespread so different every-

where,” Doherty said. “If Ihad to label it, I would callit spread option. There is alot of decision making inthe run game and in thepass game too.”

With senior quarterback Hunter Rodrigues back and healthy, along with topreceivers Devin Brocchiniand Dom Watson there

seems to be a quiet confi-dence most decisions willbe correct.

That goes too for back-up quarterback JoshuaDaniels, who transferredover from Oakmont. When Daniels isn’t throw-ing the ball, the 6-foot-3-inch Daniels will play  wide receiver.

Doherty is aware he hasinherited something good.

“These kids are goodathletes and as football

players they understandconcepts that we’re trying to install,” Doherty said,“and they’re getting better.”

Although Doherty ispleased with his linemen,he said they still have along way to go becausethey are starting with sucha high ceiling. The coach

    REVIEW

WHITNEY RE BOUND COULD BE DRAMATIC

    BY JIM LINSDAU

    OF THE PLACER HERALD

It should not be too hard for theWhitney High football team torebound from last year’s 1-9 season, although their schedule will be just astough as 2014 was.

As uncharacteristic as last year turnedout to be for the Wildcats, they areapproaching this season almost as if it

did not happen. Considering thatinjuries led to five different players put-ting in time at quarterback, they wereall juniors and sophomores.

One downside, Tyrik Ceasar, who didsuch a good job last year as a sopho-more, has since moved to Roseville andwill play for the Tigers. One upside,Oakmont quarterback Joshua Danielshas decided to play his senior season atWhitney.

Daniels will back up starting signalcaller Hunter Rodrigues.

Most anticipated for the ‘Cats 2015

campaign is the arrival of new headcoach Paul Doherty. Doherty brings asuccessful version of the spread offensehe used to take the Sacramento Highfootball to a 9-3 record and into the

semifinal game of the section DivisionIII playoffs.

The three teams that inflicted themost damage last season, Oak Ridge,Enterprise and Rocklin will be backagain this year, along with the cast andcrew of the Capital Valley Conference.Whitney stayed out of the CVC cellar bydefeating Oakmont.

Doherty makes no bones about know-

ing nothing of the CVC, but his Dragonsdid play Rocklin in a preseason tilt.Although that did not go well, Sac Highis a Division III team and Rocklin was stillundefeated and scoring more than 44points a game going into that contest.

In spite of a new coach, new schemeand teams the Wildcats are not used to(exception: Rocklin), look for an excit-ing season in 2015. Observant fans saythis group of ‘Cats will hang some num-bers on the board; however, how theWhitney defense responds in keepopponents out of the maroon and gold

end zone is going to be the X-factor.Whatever this year’s results, it’s goingto be fun, exciting and some fantasticFriday nights.

field when able. The mar-oon and gold began work-ing in earnest with a singlegoal in mind to get back totheir usual winning ways.

As for defense, Doherty said it is difficult whenplayers have to play inspace and when they haveto make a play on the ball.

Senior Colby Smith hasbeen a pleasant discovery at weak-side linebacker, but most of the defense is young.

“There is a lot morecohesion and continuity on the defensive side,”said Doherty, “But I think

those kids, as opposed toone standout leader, it’smore a group of kids thatenjoy playing together.”

The Wildcats will get astern test Saturday whenthey travel to Oak Ridgefor the season opener. Although Whitney fell 44-20 last season, they cameback on the Trojans to takethe game into overtime.

Whitney High football head coachMichael Gimenez decided 20 years ofcoaching football was a good time totake a break and stepped down afterlast season.

When Gimenez took over the Wild-cats program in 2005, he had alreadyspent 11 years as head coach of Wood-land High School. He took the Wolvesto the Division I semifinals in 1996.

A graduate of Colorado State Univer-sity, Gimenez quarterbacked the Ramsin 1989-’90 and played alongside long-time friend Paul Hanks. Hanks joinedthe Wildcats as defensive coordinatorand announced would also step downfrom his position.

“(Hanks) has been with me everyyear at Woodland and every year atWhitney,” said Gimenez. “He playedwith me at Colorado State and that’sbeen a great part of it. To hang outwith your best friend and coach withyour best friend; those were specialtimes for me.”

In nine seasons, Gimenez compiled arecord of 67 wins and 36 losses and hetook the Wildcats into the playoffs sev-en of the nine years. His playoff record

was 9-6; his ‘Cats made the finals twiceand were the 2008 CIF Sac-Joaquin Sec-tion champions.

Gimenez also sent many players upto the next level to play on scholarship;most notable perhaps was former quar-terback Jake Rodrigues, who played atthe University of Oregon before trans-ferring to San Diego State University.

Gimenez said it was time to turn the job over to another.

“I love the kids. I love teaching; I lovecoaching and that will never change. Imean, I will be coaching someone some-where. I just do not want to be tieddown as the head man,” said Gimenez.

After two decades of coaching, head coach Michael Gimenez andassistant coach Paul Hanks decided itwas time to take a break.

18 September 2015 FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2015 Supplement to Gold Country Media

    BY JIM LINSDAU

    OF THE PLACER HERALD

    High School football is

just a few days away and all eyes will be

turning to the SierraFoothill League as from where the cream of thecrop will rise — do not besurprised to find Rocklin

in that top layer. One of only two Divi-sion II clubs among theseven schools participat-ing, the Thunder and DelOro finished among thetop four; three of whichhad 4-2 league records.Folsom, the top dog (6-0in SFL, 16-0 overall), wenton to win the State Divi-sion I title.

     As one would expect,

the Bulldogs dominatedSFL stats to include quar-terback Jake Browning. However, of the top 10 Fol-som players among them, nine have graduated.

Rocklin landed oneamong those stats, seniorquarterback Max O’Rouke.O’Rouke was injuredagainst Del Oro last yearand missed the last six games of the season.

“The challenge is tobuild strength, enduranceand toughness to endurethe injuries that come andhopefully prevent any major injuries that youcan or even meet thechallenges of the fourquarters of every footballgame,” said Rocklin headcoach Greg Benzel, who’s wife recently blessed the

Benzel family with a baby girl. “[A]ll of us at RocklinHigh School, our footballprogram, is moving inthat direction.

“Unfortunately, last year we got more than ourfair share (of injuries) and we hope to al leviate thatas much as possible.”Benzel added.

Benzel and his staff start-ed last season having torebuild the entire lineback-ing corps. To do that, they had to move Evyn Holtz, the team’s top running back, to linebacker and were able to use him only sparingly at running back.

To make matters worse,Holtz suffered an ankleinjury and was hobbledfor most of the 2014 cam-paign.

“The more we can getthe ball in Evyn’s hands the

better,” Benzel said, butadded that Holtz will prob-ably pull duty as a line-backer as well. “His focus isgoing to be on the offen-

sive side of the ball, butthere are going to be situa-tions in which he’s going toneed to play linebacker. Ithink that he has the matu-rity and has the physicalendurance to handle a roleon defense as well as amajor role on offense.”

But like last year, Rock-lin is again going to haveto replace its linebackers.

Benzel has never beenone to sacrifice his defenseto benefit his offense. Although well versed onhow to move the ball, hisexpertise lies in strikinga near-perfect balancebetween the two — scoreenough to win by prevent-ing the other team from

scoring more. But there is another fac-tor on offense this seasonthat could benefit theoffense without picking

    on the defense —quarter-back.

The Thunder has twocandidates in senior William Floyd and juniorEvan Michalet – plus acouple other younger can-

    didates.Floyd picked up where

O’Rouke left off andhelped lead Rocklin intothe playoffs in 2014.Michalet, who has beenmaking a name for himself on the national stage, isdefinitely turning heads.

“I feel we should be at ornear the top this yearbecause we have been

working so diligently in theoffseason,” Michalet said,“and we as a complete unithave the goal to take it allthe way and to win the sec-tion championship.”

Michalet said his great-est strength is at playing defensive back, but he hasalso performed very well atquarterback. He and Floydshould provide the Thun-der with excellent depth

under center this year.“(Michalet) is getting

better every day. The only thing that separates(Floyd) from him is that(Floyd) has a lot of varsity experience,” Benzel said.“In terms of their work eth-ic, their leadership, theircompetitive spirit, there’sstill some really good, healthy competition going on out there — nothing  wrong with that at all.”

For what it is worth,Rocklin’s 2009 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section champi-onship season was quar-terbacked by the SFL’sleading passer Jimmy Laughrea. The offense alsohad running back JacksonCummings, the league’sNo. 2 rushing leader.

     And, that championship

team also had some of theSFL’s top defensive per-formers.

But where Benzel saidhis greatest strength will

come, at least in terms of returning players, is on theline.

“That’s the part that’s theNo. 1 priority that you want to establish first. Inthat regard, on paper wehave the most returners onthe offensive and defen-sive line,” said Benzel. “Wefeel pretty fortunate that we have a framework anda foundation to start with. Most of the football gamesare won on the line of scrimmage and we feel likein terms of guys returning  we have the most experi-ence in those areas.”

Also on that line is a 6-foot-6-inch, 225-poundtight end by the name of  Wesley Preece. Preece isthe type of football pros-pect where a coach neednot say anything morethan “Just look at him.”

    But Preece’s football tal-

ents run much deeperthan the size he wasblessed with. He hasproven to be far more thana poster boy for high

school football. As a senior,he is working even harderto put the Thunder back inthe postseason spotlight.

“I don’t really look at get-ting that certain goalbecause I (am for) teamunity, but I would like to

get as many touchdownsand other things to speak for themselves,” Preecesaid. “With my role, they can build the offense

around me as well.”Benzel said Preece

would make an outstand-ing defensive end, but withhis ability to both block and pass catch makes himinvaluable on offense. Andthat’s going to be needed

this year now that theclub’s top pass receivershave all graduated.

Gone are Brady Maysand Blake “Lightning”

Lauren; Greg Sorenson hasalso walked off centerstage. Benzel said he hassome good prospectsready to step up, but they all lack varsity experience.

Benzel said he stillbelieves in the fundamen-tals of blocking and tack-ling; and the team that canrun the ball and stop therun will win. But he knowsthe game today is far more

complex, wide open andcerebral than it was whenhe took over as Rocklin’s junior varsity coach a cou-ple of decades ago.

“The expectation of excellence in our leaguerequires every team in theleague to look for the edgeand over prepare and find whatever that little advan-tage is,” Benzel said. “Ourstaff, like every other, will betrying to put that little thing that’s going to put us overthe top and lead, we hope,to a league championship.”

    Rocklin will scrimmage

Grant Aug. 22 and openthe 2015 season hosting Pleasant Grove. The Quar-ry Bowl at Whitney High isscheduled for Sept. 11.

    REVIEW

THE YEAR THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN

    BY JIM LINSDAU

    OF THE PLACER HERALD

For any fan of Rocklin football, the 2015 seasonheld as much promise as any since the Thunder’s 2008

CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II title.Max O’Rourke, a backup quarterback to LoganWebb in 2013 with some impressive stats when play-ing under center for the junior varsity, emerged as amore-than-promising team leader. Webb wasresilient and O’Rourke got very little time at quarter-back his junior year.

A Division I kicker, O’Rourke demonstrated he hadan arm almost as strong as his leg. In six games, heracked up 1,429 yards before the unthinkable hap-pened. He sustained a season-ending hip injury com-plicated by a benign tumor.

O’Rourke wasn’t the only player to go down ashead coach Greg Benzel went deep on his roster to

try and plug holes in both the offense and defense.Junior William Floyd took over at quarterback andkept the Thunder’s playoff hopes alive. But as playerssidelined by injury began to mount up, the muchanticipated matchup with Folsom turned out to be

just one more win for the Bulldogs’ on their way to a16-0 season and a Division I State Championship.

But that was last year in the newly expanded SierraFoothill League. Folsom will be back, but they haveto replace a lot of talented seniors.

Benzel said the only two areas he as to rebuild arehis receivers and linebackers corps. He said his offen-sive and defensive line will be the strongest he hashad in a while. He also has some solid returning skill

players in Floyd, running back Evyn Holtz and tightend Wesley Preece. They are all seniors.Sac-Joaquin Section All Football first team selec-

tion Chase Hatada is back as well. There are 25 sen-iors on the 2015 roster and eight are seniors.

Anything can happen in the SFL. The SacramentoBee’s 2015 rankings have Folsom No. 1, Del Oro No. 3,Rocklin No. 5, Oak Ridge No. 7 and Granite Bay No.12. The road to a championship is never easy, butThunder football has never taken it that way.

    Go Thunder!

Rocklin High football has always been known for its defense and the 2015campaign should be no different, but the offense should provide an excellentfor the Thunder this season.

    he Western Sierra

Collegiate Academy has had to rely onintelligence and notmuch experience in put-ting a football programtogether in its inauguralseason. The team hasalready experienced per-sonnel changes and hav-ing to deal with the loss of a fellow student.

Wolves head coach JPDolliver brings 20 years of

football experience to ateam where more thanhalf the players have nofootball experience at all. Although daunting, Dol-liver said it’s what keepshis coaches sharp.

“I think it keeps ourcoaching skills sharpbecause we’re trying toteach these kids funda-mentals at the same timetrying to implement some

type of high-level foot-ball,” Dolliver said.

Although Dolliver doesnot lack in fundamentals,he also comes from pro-grams that have set new standards for fundamen-tal football. He knowshigh school football is nolonger three yards and acloud of dust.

    “Some of these kids will

only get a couple shots atit and they’ll be gone,”Dolliver said. “So why notput the best foot forwardand be as aggressive as

    possible.”But even while Dolliver

and his assistants PedroGarza (line coach), anddefensive backs and widereceiver coaches ZachLogue and Stewart are still

instructing on the propertechniques of blocking and tackling, it is not atthe expense of teaching exciting football. Dolliv-er’s advantage is how fasthis student-athletes havecaught on.

“The learning process isexponential; that in con- junction with the factthese kids are intelligentkids,” Dolliver said. “It

usually translates into ahigh IQ on the footballfield as well, which I’mnoticing. I’m extremely impressed with how much these kids retain.”

The Wolves were to gettheir first taste of compe-tition football Aug. 22 when they scrimmage atNatomas High School. The club’s first homegame will be 7 p.m. Satur-

day at Mahany Park locat-ed at the corner of Pleas-ant Grove and Woodcreek Oaks boulevards.

Without any sort of pro-gram to draw from, Dol-liver has to mold playerson the fly.

The academy is knownfor its academics, but likeall Rocklin schools it alsohas its share of athletes.

However, Saturday is when his club has tomove up to hyper-speed.

“If we can’t block and we can’t pass protect we

    are in trouble,” Dolliversaid.

On the offensive lineDolliver said his top fiveplayers can do the job.

Where he will have aproblem is when he hasto replace one of them.

Where Dolliver did feelconfident was with hisdefensive line.

“We’ve got some guysthat can push peoplearound and control somegaps,” said Dolliver, adding that they coordi-nate well with their line-backers. “Our (defensive

backs) are pretty fast; we’ve got some depth inthat section.”
