Greetings to all our tennis club mem-bers! My wife (Jan) and I just re-turned October 3 from an extended 4 ½ month absence from Green Valley. We drove coast-to-coast, and then some, during our trip and had a won-derful summer.

It is really great to be back and see many tennis people and see in person the beautiful new courts that have been constructed. Friends and I tried out Desert Hills, the other day, and we thought it is top notch in every way. I hope you agree.

The October Pot Luck dinner held at the Desert hills Recreation facility last Sunday, October 10, was a special time as we were able to honor Tudor Ampadoc.

Probably most of you know that Tu-dor is nationally ranked #1 in men’ singles and #1 in men’s doubles by the USTA for his age group. Our other distinguished guests that evening include Vivian Ampadoc, Dave Simp-son, Janet Simpson, Sam Main, Myrna Main, Lee Neil and Grace Neil, who

January 9th will have our four local USTA referees, Denny Allyn, Danny Annece, John Brennan and Ed Osnowitz come share some of their funniest stories. Their rea-

sons for being referees differ, but their one goal remains the same; they all wanted to give back to the game they love. They can be strict on the definition

of rules on the court and it is not beyond their scope to tell spectators not to give advice or leave their seats. Remem-ber to call your scores out loud enough for them to hear as they mostly are watching lines and listening for calls. Later in the spring Kathi Skytta, program coordinator, is trying to get someone from the Border Patrol to come

speak with us. Another speaker may be Dr. Romney. He is the chiro-practor who spoke with us several years ago and was very interesting. Patrick Carmody, the Green Valley Frank Sinatra, will be asked to sing at our Valentine potluck.

minutes before the sched-uled time slot.

If more than one group is ready to sign in for an open slot at that time, a racquet spin or coin flip should be used to determine which group signs in and uses that 1 and ½ hour slot.

The courtside sign-in sheets for any day will show all reservations that exist for that day at that site. Open time slots are available on first-come-first-served basis, and may be taken no earlier than 10

Play is limited morning and afternoon to hour and 30 minutes if someone is wait-ing to use the court.

PLAY ON AN UNRESERVED COURT

BALL MACHINE USE

the courts have not been reserved by the monitor at the West Center and 6.00 A.M. to 6.00 P.M. on Sunday. A ball machine user must sign in with their start time on the regular GVR sign-in sheet for Court #2, regardless if they have made ad-vanced reservations. Advanced reservations for the ma-chine shall be by the hour, on the hour, for one hour increments. Members using the ball machine have priority use of LC Court #2 if they either have signed up in ad-vance, as above, or signed in on Court #2 no sooner than 10 minutes before the hour and before a com-peting group is signed in and fully assembled. If the competing group

arrives at the same time as the ball machine user, with no reservations, the spin of a racquet will decide who gets the court. A ball machine reservation for court #2 is considered forfeited if not in use by 10 minutes after the reserva-tion start time. Other players/groups wishing to use LC Court #2 during the Ball Machine hours as stated above must check the advance registration form for the ball machine to assure Court #2 is available. If there are no advance conflicting reservations for the ball machine, and a group starts play, they are allowed the full 1 ½ court time allowed for regular tennis.

The Tennis Club ball machine is permanently housed at Las Cam-

panas and is used on Court # 2. Members wanting to use the ma-chine are allowed to reserve it and Court #2, up to one week in ad-vance by signing up on the ball ma-chine reservation form on a clip board at Las Campanas tennis/racquet ball Ramada. This rule is the same as that used in our current Tennis Court Reservation System. Only one future (active) reservation per member per week at a time is allowed. There is no sign up at West Center. The ball machine can be used at Las Campanas on Court # 2 at the fol-lowing times: 12:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Monday – Saturday provided

RESERVATIONS It is people like Ed Osnowitz who make our tennis community so successful. Ed has served con-sistently and unselfishly for many years as a monitor and as a ten-nis club board member. Many are probably aware that he is also the coordinator of all USTA umpires in our area, which re-quires a lot from him, so he has elected to step down at this time to be able to devote more of him-self to this responsibility. Please make the effort to thank Ed for the many hours he has given to

all of us, and make welcome Jan Hadley, who has graciously agreed to fill his slot in the tennis hut. As we enjoy the benefits of an effi-ciently operated tennis reservations system and other activities and events organized and conducted by our many volunteers, please take a moment to thank them for their con-tributions whenever you can. Without them, it would be a much different tennis experience for all of us.

Welcoming our returning winter visi-tors, coupled with repairs at West Center in November, will make court availability gradually more challeng-

ing this season, especially in the af-ternoons, so note the p.m. schedule of reserved courts posted at each center on the bulletin boards near the courts. We will all need to be pa-tient and plan our play as best we can.

Thanks again for all our volunteers, and thanks for your cooperation and interest in tennis. See you on the court!

The East Center tennis courts have a round robin every morn-ing from approximately 7:00 a.m. to noon, Monday thru Sat-urday. You can show up at any time, add your name to the list of people waiting to play, and they will work you into the rota-tion. The round robin is for both men and women. There is a Saturday mixer from noon until 2:00 p.m. at West Center. You do not need a part-ner to play in the mixer as the

coordinator will assign partners and courts. Show up at the ten-nis court by 11:45 a.m. on the day of mixer to sign-in. The Tennis Club sponsors a clinic every Monday and Wednesday from 2 P.M. - 4 P.M. at Desert Hills tennis courts. There are a number of ways to meet other tennis players and get involved in Green Valley tennis. The first place to look for information on what’s happening in tennis is to go to the West Center tennis courts and check the information on the bulletin boards. Although the West Ten-nis Center is just one of the ten-nis facilities throughout the com-munity; it is the “hub” for tennis information. Another place to get information without leaving your house is our website at www.gvtennis.com, also ac-cessed through www.gvrec.org. The website has the latest hap-penings along with other Club

get involved in Green Valley tennis. The league schedule is posted at West Center and De-sert Hills tennis courts as well as on our website (www.gvtennis.com) These are drop in leagues - no registration needed. There are leagues for both men and women. Check the web site for more info. Lastly, post a notice on the West Tennis Center bulletin board with your name, phone and note “looking for game” or “willing to sub” with your level of play (3.0, 3.5, 4.0, new player, etc.). There is an open bulletin board above the sign in table at West Center.

The End of the Year is Approaching!

The Tennis Club dues run from January 1 until December 31, so your membership is valid until December 31. But, if you want to pay early, any

dues collected now will pay for you through 2011.

We are asking you help to keep the Tennis Club going strong. If you know a tennis player that isn’t a Club member, please en-courage that person to join for 2011. If all members take it upon themselves to spread the word that membership is of value to every tennis player, we can keep growing, and remain vibrant.

The Club supports tennis in general, is responsible for schedul-ing court time, running free clinics, sponsoring fun tournaments, and social events. The Club also buys and repairs the ball ma-chine, and funds the Ramada facilities. We oversee USTA in-volvement, and will administer USTA funded clinics.
