Fall 2006

Much has been centered in this Valley overthe last year and a half on an issue which byconsensus has been summed up as “theprice of lunch.” It has reached such epicproportions that I can no longer even saythose words without breaking into a fit oflaughter. These words encompass all of thebickering and squabbling about everything, including food.

So Brothers, what has the price of lunchactually worked out to be? Have youspoken to another brother in anger over thislast year? Joined a clique or workedagainst the Valley instead of working for it,(and by extension, for yourself and for yourBrethren)? Have you labored in thequarries Masonry “without hope of fee orreward,” or has the petty infighting andpolitics firmly ensconced themselves?

The Valley held its picnic this year on May21st, hosted by the Knights of St. Andrew, who did a fantastic job, despite therelatively low turnout. The fact that theValley was giving away all kinds of goodfood for FREE and hardly anybody showedup leads me to believe that all of the arguingand fighting over the last year and a half hasnot truly been about how much food costs.

The ritual asks us “What come you here todo?” The answer, as I sure hope you allknow, is “To learn to subdue my passionsand improve myself in Freemasonry.” Weought to have the question put on a bannerand hung at the front door.

What come you here to do? “I come here todo my degree, complain about the props, whine about how much lunch costs, and

Well 2006 is really flying by. Dues noticesare in the mail and Reunion,

, Parties, Club Meetings,Concerts and taxes are soon to follow.

I want to thank the Missouri Scottish RiteFoundation Board for their Grant, whichwill allow us to retire much of the garagedebt. Once the refinancing is completethe garage payments and income shouldbe much closer to matching each other.

Yes, dues have gone up again, but we eachneed to do our part to support theFraternity. The Scottish Rite is still thelowest cost affiliate masonic organizationin Missouri.

We are moving ahead with major repairand renovation projects and need yourhelp. I invite everyone to become amember of the Scottish Rite PreservationSociety. Get your name on the wall andhelp support the legacy given to us in trustfor future generations of Scottish RiteMasons.

then I'll disappear for six months” hardlyseems to be what our FRATERNITYshould be about. Dictionary.com gives itsfifth definition of the word as “the qualityor condition of being brothers;brotherliness.” My brother is my brother.Though we may disagree, we can agree todo so, agreeably but at the end of the day,I am ready to go on my brother's errand,“whenever required, even should I have togo barefoot and bareheaded,” and will“apprise him of all approaching danger, ifin my power.” Ideally, we should all beready to uphold our obligations towardeach other no matter what.

Brethren, our Fraternity is not one man,or a small handful of men. We shine theLight of Freemasonry outward throughour good works, publicly, our fraternity ischildren speaking properly, the crippledhealed, and the burned restored. Eachone of us should make a promise tohimself to also work on shining some ofthat Masonic Light back inwards, to eachother and to the fraternity at large.

Truly, the price of lunch has proven to bequite taxing on us all, a hundred differentminiature Civil War battles pitting brotheragainst brother. Would that we all “bediligent, temperate, and discreet” andremember that around the same altar weall promised to befriend each other!

“Finally, my Brethren, be you all of onemind to live in harmony, and may the Godof Love and Peace abide with you.”

So mote it be!

CathedralNotes

Brethren:

In our desire to keep the membership well informed on the many projectsat the Cathedral this column will be a regular feature of the

. First I want to thank Curt Fulbright and P.J. Pyle for their

hard work during these past few months. Our building is in bettercondition from their efforts and concern for our property.

Besides the continuing cleaning and support of events, we continue towork on the Kitchen. We have completed a proper inventory of allkitchen assets. Most of the equipment has been cleaned, counted andstored for future use. We will be repairing or replacing a few items andhope to add a new steam line for our food service. Our pantry is beingorganized better to support our events and snack bars operations forshows.

Hard work has gone into cleaning all the blower rooms in anticipation ofthe planned repairs of our A/C system. For many years these area wereused as storerooms and were pretty much left on their own. If ourfundraising efforts prove successful we may be able to have AirConditioning by next summer.

We are also fixing up the old museum as a regular rehearsal room for theScottish Rite Youth Wind Ensemble. This should help keep theAuditorium available for other use and control the access of the buildingduring evening hours. The final repairs to the 4th level bathroom makesthis possible.

The Executive Secretary has moved back into the traditional office andour small conference room is now available for committee meetings. Wehope to keep it a non-smoking room, but have kept the smoke area in thehallway.

We have added a new feature to the Auditorium... A giant screen andprojector (18’ x 24’). We will be looking to use it with the future ritualpresentation material from Supreme Council. It is also suitable formovies, presentations and NFL Football. We may even show a movie onFriday night of Reunion Weekend. Looks great and with our auditoriumsound system it is an experience.

With the dining room bathroom renovations just around the corner I amsure you will all be proud of the Cathedral. If any member has a questionabout any of our ongoing projects, or would like to learn how to help out,I invite them to call or e-mail me.

Fraternally,
