THANK YOU STEWARDS A radio program I heard last week touted the measurable benefits of starting each day with a sense of gratefulness. The same science applies Masonic correspondence, I think. Today we thank our Stewards, past and present, for serving our lodge so well. Recently, Bro. Randy Cox has held the steward’s staff. He’s assembled dinners that would be reason enough to drive to the Temple even if we did nothing else all evening. Thank you, Randy! APRIL IS BUSY Nebraska Masonry was jumping in March with the Shrine Circus and the Schools of Instruction. If for some strange reason you want relief in April, you won’t find any. Just two days after our monthly business meeting and potluck on Apr. 5, we’ll throw a multi-lodge all-family event at the L Street Temple—the Annual Easter Egg Hunt (2-4 p.m.). Don’t arrive late—last year children found all the eggs by about 2:15. (If only kids would approach chores with the same enthusiasm.) We’ve designed other activities for kids to follow the egg hunt such as dying eggs. DEGREE WORK SCHEDULED We’re reserving the nights of Apr. 12 and Apr. 19 for much needed degree work. MASTERWORKS OF MASONS CONCERT SCHEDULED APRIL 14TH As a fundraiser for a proposed handicap entrance to their building and other charitable programs, Cotner Lodge #297 is sponsoring the first ever Masterworks of Masons concert to be held April 14th, 2007, at 7:30 P.M. at the Lincoln Scottish Rite Temple, 332 Centennial Mall South. This concert will feature the 65-member University of Nebraska-Lincoln Symphonic Band conducted by Cornhusker Marching Band Director Anthony M. Falcone; internationally known piano soloist and UNL piano professor Dr. Mark Clinton (Cotner Lodge Senior Warden, Sesostris Shrine, Tabula Rasa Lodge #332, and Columbia Chapter #275, OES) and internationally known clarinet soloist for the Lincoln Symphony orchestra and UNL clarinet professor Dr. Diane Barger (Columbia Chapter #275, OES). Lincoln has never witnessed such a diverse group of internationally known musicians to honor the music of such Masons as Mozart, Mendelssohn, Weber, Gershwin, and Sousa. Nebraska composers will also be honored through their music. Tickets went on sale February 15 due to the advance interest and number of website inquiries and telephone calls to the ticket hotline. “People usually pay $50-60 to see these soloists perform with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra or at the Lied Center,” said Patrick Barger, Cotner’s Worshipful Master. “As a fundraiser for Cotner Lodge’s charitable endeavors, including a much-needed handicap entrance to the lodge, the artists are donating their services. Due to their generosity we are only charging $20 for adults, $15 for seniors (60 and older), and $10 for students. People who know nothing of the music’s connection to Masonry are anxious to hear these artists for less than half the price of what they’d pay to see them elsewhere,” Barger said. “Likewise, the phone has been ringing off the hook with calls from Masons who don’t want to miss this inaugural event in Nebraska’s Masonic History! We anticipate a sell-out.” Barger said he had to go back to the printer to make more tickets. Tickets can still be purchased on the web at www. masterworksofmasons.com. Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express are accepted. Special arrangements to accept cash or check can be made by calling toll- free at 1-866-272-2631. Tickets will be held at the door for pick-up on the night of the concert. Or call Patrick Barger at (402) 770-2830. This concert idea was the dream of Cotner Past Master and Barger’s father-in-law Robert “Bob” Cawein. Cawein died five days prior to his installation in 2004 and never got to see his dream evolve. Email to the EditorJohn Butterick, PM Liberty Lodge 300

W.B. Wade,

I just received my March Masonic News. Glad to see that you’re at the helm. I read the article from 300 about the Shriners and the Little Cars and felt that I could relate. I haven’t been in Lincoln in almost 25 years but we’re all doing the same stuff. I was Potentate here last year and drove my “Little Car” (we call them Flivvers) in a Christmas Parade in one of our close suburbs. I am usually the one taking the pictures but ended up on the other side of the camera. I’ve attached a copy of the picture for you.

Sincerely and Fraternally,

John Butterick, PM

Those of you who have traveled around Nebraska have doubtless noticed a blank spot on the radio dial around Valentine. After the sun goes down, about the only station you can get broadcasts Lakota War chants on what my friend and Brother Warren Arganbright calls Rosebud Radio. He got me started on satellite radio, which now keeps me awake better than a cup of truck stop coffee. One of my favorite channels plays nothing but bluegrass - solid banjo twang 24/7. One of the songs getting some play lately is a song called “Be ready to Sail.” The chorus goes something like… “Be ready to sail, when a good wind blows your way, be ready to sail. Cast your fate upon the water, catch a big wave by the tail, and when a good wind blows your way…be ready to sail.” My brothers, a good wind is blowing our way. Big waves of new interest in Freemasonry are all around us. Books are being written about Freemasonry. Books, which show Freemasonry in a positive light, are selling big. Movies like the DaVinci Code and National Treasure are piquing interest in our brotherhood. Internet search engines are recording thousands of queries about Freemasonry, about us, every day. Those of you at Grand Lodge in February heard Chris Hodapp predict that we were on the cusp of a membership surge that hasn’t been seen since the end of the Second World War.

This certainly is a good wind, and these really are big waves. The question we have to ask ourselves is “Are we ready to sail?” Realistically, and sadly, the answer to that question is “not yet.” We have some work to do. Many of our lodges and our members are old and most of us are tired. We have chartered two new lodges in 35 years. We have lost over a hundred in that time. PGM Les Seiler is fond of telling a story about a town that lost its last grocery store. The closing was covered by TV stations and newspapers across the state. Yet when the Lodge in that same town closed, it went without notice. Nobody missed us.

Many of our lodges are struggling financially. Only a handful have an internet connection in their lodge. Most don’t even have a telephone. Grand Custodian Jerry Verbeek, who travels more than most of us, tells me that he will often stop in a Mini-Mart and ask where the Masonic Lodge is. Too frequently he gets a blank stare and a phone book - often one without a listing for the lodge. Our

membership has declined every year for the last 50 years. We have work to do. If we are to catch that good wind, we don’t have a lot of time.

I am convinced that the path to the future we all want for our fraternity does not lie in the direction of making it cheaper or easier to be a Mason. If we are to reconstruct Masonry in Nebraska, we must build it on the minds of men who are committed enough to study Masonry, to learn and work towards an understanding of our principles, and upon the shoulders of men who understand the value of Masonry in their daily lives and are willing and able to pay for it.

Many such men belong to our order today, but no longer participate in lodge activity. Many others would be interested if we were perceived as something other than a bunch of old men hiding in old buildings. It seems to me that the first step in revitalizing our current membership and attracting the men who will carry our brotherhood forward is to restore pride in Masonry, making membership in our brotherhood something to be proud of, something to be sought after. Brethren, we have much to be proud of. Our brothers who founded the Grand Lodge 150 years ago started a prairie fire of Masonry that spread across the mountain west. At Grand Lodge this year, we had delegations from Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, and New Mexico. The Light they now carry came from our Masonic forefathers, men like Robert Carrel Jordan, George Armstrong, Robert W. Furnas. Nebraska Freemasons have been Governors, Generals, and Statesmen. They have sat on our Supreme Court and filled our legislative chamber. Nebraska Freemasons have done us proud. Now it is our turn.

We need to refurbish our lodges and reinvigorate our members. Our Lodges should be show places of the community. They need to be painted, cleaned and used. Every highway into a town with a lodge should have a Masonic sign. Lodges should be open and available to civic groups, church organizations, and youth clubs. I realize many of you do maintain your lodges and make them available, but we need to do better, across the state.

There is a line in our Lodge leadership course which goes “A man who becomes a Nebraska Mason can expect to find in his fraternity the opportunity to learn and to lead; to be inspired and entertained, to be challenged and respected; to

be involved with his family, his Brethren, and his community; and be proud to be a member of an organization committed to making a difference, that has a history of making a difference. Nebraska Freemasonry.” What is your lodge doing to meet that expectation?

The Grand Lodge is moving in that direction. In May, to celebrate our 150th anniversary, the Grand Lodge will bring the Initiated Eye exhibit to Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. The Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia commissioned the exhibit. It is a series of paintings depicting some of the Masonic origins of our country. Several thousand people tour Joslyn in a month, people who don’t know anything about us. They will see President Washington in his apron. They will see the cornerstone of the nation’s capitol being laid by Freemasons. I want you to see these things too. We did this not only to generate interest in our fraternity, but also to inspire our brotherhood. A Masonic ceremony is being planned to open this exhibit, tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of April 29, 2007. All Lodges will be notified when the planning is completed.

On September 21, there will be a special memorial service. Most of you know about the Nebraska Hall of Fame in the rotunda of the Capitol building. You may not know that of the 17 men enshrined, 10 were Masons. We have received permission to conduct a Masonic Memorial service in the Capitol rotunda to honor those men. I expect three hundred masons, in white gloves and aprons, to march across the street and up the stairs of the Capitol to attend that service. It will be a grand day, our one hundred fiftieth anniversary.

These events are designed to build pride in our members and awareness in the general public, but they will have maximum effect only if we take pride in them, if we participate in them and if we are identified as Masons in doing so. At Grand Lodge, I urged you to wear your insignia to identify yourselves as Masons. But upon reflection, I think that, better than rings, pins, and bumper stickers, we are our own best advertisement for Masonry. When we act like Masons, practicing the tenets of our order, brotherly love, relief and truth, we are noticed. There is a need in our country for men of such character. There is a great need for the skills taught by the craft. There is a need for Freemasonry.

CENTRAL SCHOOLS

March kept our Lodge busy attending the four Central Schools of Instruction. Led by the Grand Custodian of the Ritual, Worshipful Bro. Also in March, our Lodge began practice for our examination in Lodge proficiency, the annual test of how well we perform the Ritual.

One of our newest members, Bro. Adam Brinkman, who was raised to the rank of Master Mason last summer, returned in March after completing Army training at Fort Gordon, GA.

MARCH BUSINESS MEETING

Our March business meeting kicked off with WB Dennis Mundt’s BBQ opossum and baked beans for dinner. Business was as usual including balloting on another candidate. More on that next month. The highlight of the meeting were our guests, a delegation consisting of WB Charles Hilgenfeld, WB Everett King and WB Homer Fishwood who drove up from Humboldt to present the Humboldt Lodge #40 Bronze Jordan Medal to Bro. Charles Slagle. Bro. Charlie was raised in Stella Lodge which went extinct and was absorbed by Humboldt Lodge. Bro. Slagle holds a dual membership with North Star and Humboldt Lodge. Way to go Charlie. Central Schools of Instruction are coming up and North Star will participate. I will be on the road for the next two weeks and the Lodge plans at this date are in somewhat of a flux, and since there is a dead line, this is all you get.

“JOKES ‘O’ DA MONTH”

A husband and wife came for counseling after 15 years of marriage. When asked what the problem was, the wife went into a passionate, painful tirade listing

every problem they had ever had in the 15 years they had been married. She went on and on and on. Neglect, lack of intimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feeling unloved and unlovable, an entire laundry list of un-met needs she had endured over the course of their marriage. Finally, after allowing this to go on for a sufficient length of time, the therapist got up, walked around the desk and, after asking the wife to stand, embraced and kissed her passionately. The woman shut up and quietly sat down as though in a daze. The therapist turned to the husband and said, “This is what your wife needs at least three times a week. Can you do this?” The husband thought for a moment and replied,.. “Well, I can drop her off here on Mondays and Wednesdays, but on Fridays, I fish.”

ANOTHER NUGGET

Mrs. Johnson decided to have her portrait painted by a famous artist. She told the artist, “Paint me with diamond earrings, a diamond necklace, emerald bracelets and a ruby pendant.” “But you are not wearing any of those things.” “I know,” said Mrs. Johnson. “My health is not good and my husband is having an affair with his secretary. When I die I’m sure he will marry her, and I want the old hen to go nuts looking for the jewelry.”

STATED MEETING, MARCH 7, 2007

Starcraft patrons gathered once again for our March regularly stated meeting. Worthy Matron, Sister Terri Sherman welcomed everyone and shared a poem about Groundhogs Day. There were eleven lovely faces on our sidelines that evening. We kicked things off by reading the minutes of our February meeting, which was a helpful reminder of what everyone learned at school of instruction that month.

There was a healthy stack of correspondence to read through this month and at the top of the stack was information about Grand Chapter. Grand Chapter will be held May 8, 9, and 10 here in Lincoln at the Pershing Auditorium. Discussion regarding Capitol and Starcraft Chapters collaborating their efforts for the 50-year luncheon held on May 10th at Grand Chapter was established by asking for volunteers for decorations, committees, etc. Sister Cheryl Pope graciously offered to head up the committee for this. More discussion and details will be covered at the next meeting.

Sister Ruth Beach reported on both Kensington and Past Matrons. She reported that Kensington will meet on April 7th at 11:30 a.m. at Martha Washington and Past Matrons will meet for the city wide Past Matrons and Past Patrons meeting on April 29th at 5:30 p.m. While on the topic of Past Patrons, interim Worthy Patron

Don Jelinek read his 2006 Past Patrons report in grand gesture with an “I came, I listened, I obeyed” point of view, and as always he got plenty of chuckles from the crowd. Following his speech Worthy Matron Terri Sherman held elections for the office of Worth Patron for the ensuing year. Installation of newly elected Brother Don followed with Sister Julie Fowler acting as installing Marshal, where Brother Don Jelinek was elected and installed as Worthy Patron for the year once again.

Wor thy Ma t ron Te r r i announced a special meeting on March 21st for an initiation ceremony where our District Supervisor Billy Matter will be present. Sister Terri encouraged everyone to come early to welcome her. A practice is scheduled for Sunday, March 18th at 1:30 for officers to sharpen their skills before the meeting on the 21st.

Other i t ems members focused on were the annual band scholarship. Money for the scholarship needs to be in prior to April 25th and a school selected. Members were going to put on their thinking caps for possible candidates for the scholarship to further discuss and elect at the April meeting. Brother Dennis Brydl reported on the Masonic News meeting where they held elections of officers and announced that he was elected President for the ensuing year. He also reported that finances are looking up and mentioned that rates may be reduced in the coming future. In

correspondence it was mentioned that Sister Betty Garwood wanted input from members on how they would like to see Grand Officer visitations done, this will be further discussed during the April meeting.

ILLNESSES

Sister Phyllis Bryan Luedke P.M. finally got out of Madonna at the end of February and is back home at the Grand Lodge. Nita Babcock P.M. had shoulder replacement surgery on February 28th at St. Elizabeth. Lois Bornemeier had a blood clot in her leg. Carol Anderson had knee replacement surgery on February 28th at St. Elizabeth.

DEATHS

Bever ly Kiss ler sadly passed away February 21st.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

It was announced that Sister Marjorie DeVries celebrated her 93rd birthday. Sister Marjorie is a member here but resides in Polk City, IA. It was suggested by Sister Bonnie Kalkwarf to get the piano tuned, this motion was seconded and approved. Worthy Matron Terri read aloud the March birthday and anniversary list. Worthy Matron Terri thanked her pro-tem officer Mary Kay Metzlaff.

Wor thy Ma t ron Te r r i shared a poem called Fire Side Friends and closed chapter.

One evidence of that need is immediate. Perhaps I just watch too much of Fox News, but I feel the sands of public opinion shifting away from our efforts in Iraq. I pray that it does not shift from our soldiers as it has before. When many of us came home from Vietnam, it was a very difficult time. It is a small wonder that Vietnam veterans are not joiners. Many were treated very badly. Our troops in this current struggle deserve better. They are older – many are now members of our lodges. As Grand Master I charge each of you that when our brothers return to us they are to be welcomed into our lodges; they shall be brought before our altars, their sacrifices acknowledged, and their service honored.

When my officers and I visit your lodges, we will ask if you have brothers in service overseas. We will want to know if you are offering assistance to their families,

and we will want to know your plans for their return. Brethren, I will not tolerate indifference.

In this regard I have directed, my first order if you will, that during this Masonic year in this Grand Jurisdiction, no Masonic assembly will adjourn without first invoking the blessing of God on behalf of our brothers in military service, praying for their bravery and safety in battle, providing support and relief of their families in their absence, and pledging a heart felt welcome in our lodges when they return to us.

There is a part in the 8th Degree Scottish Rite Ritual about the reasons for secrecy in Freemasonry. We value secrecy and swear to maintain it because it has not always been safe to be a Freemason; indeed, in some places it is not safe to be a Freemason today. We can safely gather to practice our mystic art because our brothers and many like them protect and project our freedoms around

the world. Freemasons must always stand with our soldiers, even if we stand alone. I have no doubt that Nebraska Masons will proudly do so.
