We are pleased to introduce the third group of the Hungarian-American EnterpriseScholarship Fund (HAESF) Fellows who will be commencing their individual proj-ects and traineeships in the United States in Fall 2005.

Nineteen HAESF Fellows from twelve different fields are represented in this groupof award recipients. Four Senior Scholars and fifteen Undergraduate Fellows havebeen accepted for the fall programs. They have been selected from a vast pool ofvery talented applicants in recognition of their outstanding qualifications andpotential to build professional framework for long lasting impact in Hungary.

This dynamic and diverse group represents an impressive array of fields: finance,business, international relations, security policy, medicine, physics, engineering,journalism, mediation and alternative conflict resolution, excise taxation, artmanagement, and literary translation.

The Fellows will be pursuing their individual projects in a number of prominentAmerican businesses and organizations in different regions of the United States.Eight academic and research institutions gladly agreed to participate in the pro-gram. University of Miami Department of Medicine University of Maryland, K. RossToole Archives in Missoula, the Library of Congress and the National Archives inWashington D.C., University of Missouri, Columbia, International Writing Programin Iowa City, Iowa will be welcoming HAESF Senior Scholars and sharing with themtheir expertise. The State University of New York in Buffalo will be hosting threeUndergraduate Fellows for a series of four week rotations at the School ofMedicine and Biomedical Sciences.

An impressive group of leading companies and organizations such as BostonScientific Co., Department of Revenue of Indiana, Siemens Venture Capital,Allegiance Financial Group, Center for Strategic and International Studies, RozsaLaw Firm, United Nations Development Programme, Amnesty International, CPRInstitute for Dispute Resolution, Arizona Daily Sun, and ExitArt has embraced theunique opportunity to bring an international dimension to their workplace whileproviding a life-changing experience to the Hungarian students and young pro-fessionals.

We are certain that these programs will facilitate an effective exchange of pro-fessional competencies and fresh perspectives and promote cross-cultural dia-logue. We hope that the experience will be beneficial to the Fellows in their futurecareers, as well as to Hungarian society at large.

CIEE, the Council on International Educational Exchange, is HAESF's partner in theUS. CIEE has been charged with developing and managing the programs includingsecuring training placements, distributing financial awards and providing J-1Visa sponsorship and overall program support.

Péter works as the personal assistant of the deputystate secretary for defense policy at the HungarianMinistry of Defense. At the same time he is a Ph.D. stu-dent at the Department of Modern and ContemporaryHistory at Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) in Budapest.His research area covers proposals of U.S. troop reduc-tion in Europe in the late 1960s, early 1970s. He gradu-ated with two masters degree (History, AmericanStudies) from ELTE in 1998, and one master degree(National Security Affairs) from Naval PostgraduateSchool in Monterey, CA in 2003. He won the UnitedStates Naval Institute Award for his “thesis judged to beof the most importance to the U.S. Navy and meets thehighest standards of excellence.” He published a coupleof articles on security policy issues.

Péter is spending two months in Missoula, MT and onemonth in Washington D.C. to make extensive researchon the topic of his Ph.D. dissertation. He is visiting the K.Ross Toole Archives in Missoula, the Library of Congressand the National Archives in Washington D.C. Throughhis research he seeks to gain a better understanding ofthe dynamics of trans-Atlantic relations and the deci-sion-shaping and making process in Washington D.C.

Within a short period of time Péter plans to work at theHungarian Mission to NATO in Brussels. Given that NATOis the most important political-military forum in trans-Atlantic relations he could directly utilize the knowledgeobtained through his research project.

Péter lives in Budafok together with his wife (Fanni),daughter (Dorottya) and son (Botond). His hobbiesinclude reading, gardening, hiking, kayaking, andspending time with his family.

Zoltan received an M.A. in English Language andLiterature from Eotvos Lorand University (ELTE), wherehe now teaches courses on the English novel and the the-ory and practice of literary translation. As an activetranslator of contemporary English and American fiction,he has produced renditions of works from such renownedauthors as Ray Bradbury or Paul Auster. In addition, hewrites short stories that have appeared in major journalsand periodicals, and has also published two collections.

Zoltan is spending four months at the InternationalWriting Program in Iowa City where, by meeting writersand translators from all over the world, he will explorewriting and translating as cross-cultural events, studydifferent methods of publishing, and develop a curricu-lum for literary translation. After his Fellowship, Zoltanwill continue teaching translation, incorporating into it allthe experiences and best practices he has learned duringhis residency.

Among his hobbies are music, cinema and hiking.

Dr. Ádám Révész is an assistant professor at theDepartment of General Physics at the Eötvös LorándUniversity (ELTE). He got his M.Sc. degree in physicsfrom Eötvös University.

From 1996 until 1999 he was a full time PhD student atthe same department. During this time developed sci-entific collaborations with the Solid State ResearchInstitute of the Hungarian Academy of Science. Ádámcompleted his PhD thesis in physics (materials sci-ence) at the end of 2000 “summa cum laude”.

In 1999 he was appointed assistant professor at theDepartment of General Physics. His main researchfocuses on peculiar materials such as nanocrystallineand amorphous compounds. Over the last several yearsÁdám has had numerous international collaborationswith outstanding research groups in Europe, includingUAB, Barcelona and LTPCM, Grenoble. With the help ofdifferent foundations (EU-5, Soros) he spent long-termvisits as a graduate or postgraduate fellow at theseinstitutes. He is also a member of several national(OTKA, NKFP) and international (EU-6, INTAS) researchprojects. One of his most important goals is presentinghis results at international conferences and publishingthem in top international scientific journals. In this lastyear Ádám has supervised two undergraduate stu-dents.

In his spare time Ádám plays competitive basketball inthe Józsefvárosi Basketball Club. He enjoys travellingand going on excursions with friends in the Hungarianhills.

Dr. Kinga Schiffer was born on June 6th, 1970 inSzeged, Hungary. After finishing Secondary School shewas admitted to the Budapest University of EconomicSciences. In 1993, after graduating from university,she stayed as an assistant lecturer at the Departmentof Agricultural Economics of the University, where shestarted her Ph.D. studies. Simultaneously with her PhDcourse she completed a French-Hungarian post-gradu-ate course and in 1998 obtained a MSc. degree in RealEstate, acknowledged in France as well. Kinga hasbeen working at the National Savings and CommercialBank, the biggest bank in Hungary, for the ProjectFinance and Acquisition Directorate as a Senior ProjectManager for the past eight years.

At the beginning her main fields of interests were landand estate exploitation, but thanks to severalyears ofprofessional experience at the bank, she has beenclosely following the financial aspects of real estateprojects and their background. Now Kinga's main areaof interest is PPP (Public Private Partnership) a co-operative form of real estate investments. As a HAESFFellow she is going to spend 11 months at theUniversity of Missouri, Columbia focusing on thistopic.

Kinga is married with two children named Barnabás (6years old) and Laura (5 years old). Her hobby is play-ing volleyball and she is the member of a volleyballteam in the First National League. She loves travellingand going on outings but the most important of all isthat she loves spending her spare time with her fami-ly.

Eszter Adlovits

Dániel recently completed his studies at the University of Pécs Faculty ofHumanities, having graduated in Aesthetics and Philosophy. He wrote his the-sis on the connection between Schopenhauerian and Nietzscheian aesthetics.His primary interest is contemporary visual art. He would like to help youngand under-recognized artists by establishing an art institute.

Dániel is spending 1 year in New York at ExitArt , a contemporary art center, toimbibe the knowledge of the management and curatorial work. He wants to usethose ideas in his later work in Hungary.

In his spare time Dániel likes to read, swim and chat with his friends. He alsolikes to travel abroad.

Dániel Agonás

Eszter graduated in economics in 2004 at the University of Pécs. She receiveda double degree in Finance and European Union Business Studies. Currenly,she is working at the Ministry of Finance. Her main field of interest is financialanalysis and financial planning.

Eszter is going to spend 12 months in the U.S. on a dual traineeship. For sixmonths she will train at Allegiance Financial Group in Portand, Maine where shewill be able to study the latest financial products, services, analysis methodsand models. She will spend the remaining six months at the Headquarters ofGeneral Electric in Stamford, CT where she will be training with the company'sConsumer Finance group. After her fellowship in the US, Eszter would like to setup her own business focusing on financial consulting.

In her spare time Eszter likes to read, travel and get to know foreign cultures.

Gabor, former scholarship holder of the Indonesian Government, is a fresh grad-uate of the Budapest University of Economic Sciences. For a year he has beenemployed by the Hungarian Customs and Finance Guard as a second lieutenantanalyst of the Excise Goods Directory. He is responsible for tax policy making,fiscal planning, co-ordination of anti-smuggling combat, analysis of the circu-lation of excise goods, ensuring the professional background of enactment.

Gabor plans to observe the field of taxation of excise goods in the Departmentof Revenue of Indiana for 9 months. He wants to study the logic of the taxation,the tax policy making, the ant-smuggling struggle and the co-operation of thebusiness corporations and state institutions. Returning from the United Stateshe is going to use his experience and newly developed skills to support thebuilding of the modern excise taxation system in Hungary and forward theadaptation of the Hungarian Customs and Finance Guard to the new economicenvironment.

In his leisure time Gabor likes to read and go to the theatre and concerts. He isalso football and chess fan.

Gabor Bota

Zoltán attends the Faculty of Law of the University of Pécs, where he is only afew state examinations away from graduation. His special academic field ismediation and alternative dispute resolution with special regard to Commercialand Employment law. Zoltán has been working as an intern for an internation-al law office as well.

He is spending 11 months at the CPR Institute for Dispute Resolution in NewYork. After his return to Hungary, Zoltán is planning to pursue a career in thefield of mediation.

In his free time he likes going to the theatre, hanging out with his friends andplaying volleyball.

László Entz

Szabolcs is in his fifth year at the Spanish Department of the Eotvos LorandUniversity in Budapest. He has been working as a journalist at national news-papers such as Mai Nap, Blikk and Magyar Hírlap for the last nine years and has experience editing monthly and weekly magazines.

Szabolcs is spending ten months in Flagstaff as a newsroom trainee at theArizona Daily Sun to learn about the editing, story following methods, reportingand other daily media questions at this highly respected paper. Szabolcs willcontinue his work in the Hungarian media upon returning to Budapest.

He enjoys travelling, Formula One and spending time with friends.

Szabolcs Kordos

László is a sixth year medical student at Semmelweis University in Budapest.He wants to be a surgeon after he is done with his studies. He also works in alaboratory as a member of the Research Students Association. He has held suc-cessful presentations in his major field of study at different student congress-es in Hungary, and at one in Berlin.

He had the opportunity to spend 3 Months at the State University of New Yorkat Buffalo as a surgery subintern. After he finishes his last year he is going toapply for a residency position in Budapest.

László really likes to travel, play tennis and water polo and to meet his friends.

Tamás is a sixth year medical student at Semmelweis University in Budapest.His major field of interest is internal medicine and cardiology. He has partici-pated in a research study of Cardiac MRI assessment in children who haveundergone heart operation at the Gottsegen Hungarian Institute of Cardiology.

Tamás is spending 3 months at State University of New York at Buffalo. He willattend Internal Medicine and Obstetrics/Gynacolgy Subinternship rotations.When he returns to Hungary after his Fellowship in the United States, he willfinish his last year in school and apply for the Residency Program in InternalMedicine.

Tamás is a member of the Students' Council and the Folk-dancing Group atSemmelweis University. He also plays the guitar and likes playing tennis andskiing.

Tamás Németh

Zsofia has recently completed her legal studies at the Faculty of Law of EötvösLoránd University (ELTE), Budapest. She also holds a Master of Arts inAmerican Studies (2002) from the Faculty of Humanities of the same universi-ty. She has been working as an assistant and vice president of the youth sec-tion of the Hungarian Atlantic Council for the past four years dealing with thecurrent issues of the European integration process and transatlantic relations.

Zsofia's main fields of academic interest include foreign relations, internation-al public and private law. During her studies she has focused on European Lawwriting her legal thesis on the constitutional developments of the EU. After com-pleting a 14 week training program with Fredricks& von der Horst in LosAngeles, Zsofia will be interning for eight months with Rozsa Law Firm, in theareas of International Business Law, Entertainment Law and IntellectualProperty Law, respectively.

The minimal, yet precious free time Zsofia has is devoted to her singing in St.Stephen's Oratorial Choir. She also enjoys swimming and travelling. BesidesEnglish she speaks German, and she is gradually improving her competence inSpanish and Italian.

Istvan Osztheimer

Zoltan graduated at the Corvinus University of Budapest in 2005 and holds amasters degree in finance which means he is officially recognized as aCertified Public Accountant too. Although his major field of interest is capitalmarkets, in the last two years of his university career he pursued courses inpolitics as a minor field of study. Thanks to his interest in public affairs hebecame a student-elected member of the University Council for a year and pub-lished articles on economic and social policy in the leading Hungarian dailynewspaper.

Zoltan will train with Siemens Venture Capital, a San Jose-based venture capitaldivision of Siemens AG - one of the world's largest electrical engineering andelectronics companies. Siemens Venture Capital Group invests in promisingsmall-sized startups in Silicon Valley, California. During his one-year-long train-ing, Zoltan will participate in activities related to corporate evaluation and cor-porate finance as well as strategic decision-making.

In his spare time Zoltan likes to read, especially about Hungarian historybefore World War II. His is fond of taking photos and traveling and enjoys goingout with friends.

Zoltan Pinter

Istvan has just defended his MD degree at the Semmelweis University inBudapest. He is also a second year bioengineering student at the BudapestUniversity of Technology and Economics. His field of academic interest is inter-ventional cardiology. Istvan is interested in both the use and development ofcutting-edge procedures and devices.

Istvan is spending 9 months at the University of Miami, Department ofMedicine division of Interventional Cardiology to participate in current clinicalresearch. After his internship in Miami he is going to spend 3 months in Bostonat Boston Scientific Co. Medical Sciences Department to gain experience in amarket oriented environment. When Istvan returns to Hungary after hisFellowship in the United States, he will start his specialized education in thefield of cardiology and will finish his last 1.5 years in bioengineering.

He is a scout and likes hiking and rowing. He is the third among four brothersin the family. Istvan is interested in learning other cultures.

Orsolya has just finished her studies at the Corvinus University, majoring inInternational Relations. She also has a minor in economics. Her field of interestis humanitarian affairs and refugee-care.

Orsolya will spend 8 months at the US Committee for United NationsDevelopment Programme in Washington DC learning about fund-raising meth-ods and getting an insight into to the everyday work of the organization. Afterreturning to Hungary she is planning to work for the Hungarian Red Cross.

In her spare time Orsolya likes to read, ski and belly-dance.

Orsolya Richter

Balazs is a sixth year medical student at Semmelweis University in Budapest.His main field of interest is surgery. Beside his medical studies he works at theExperimental Research Laboratory, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery. Hestudies the physiology of the cardiovascular system and the pericardial fluidthere.

Balazs is spending 3 months in Buffalo at State University of New York as a fel-low of Hungarian Medical Association of America. He studies surgery, trauma-tology and emergency medicine there. After his return to Hungary Balazs grad-uates in 2006 and intends to work in Hungary as a surgeon.

In his spare time Balazs likes to play waterpolo and ski in the winter. He alsolikes to read and dance salsa.

Máté Sípos

Natalia has finished her studies as an economist at the Corvinus University ofBudapest (earlier called the Budapest University of Economic Sciences andPublic Administration). She specialised in International Relations with a focuson the European Union. She also has a degreee as European Political Analyst.She was a member of the Rajk László College for Advanced Studies which is aninstitution with the goal of educating professionals of the highest standards.Besides Hungarian, she speaks English, German and Italian.

Natalia is spending 1 year in Washington DC at the Center for Strategic andInternational Studies (CSIS) to learn about efficiently influencing governmentalpolicy-making processes through non-partisan expertise. When Nataliareturns to Hungary after her Fellowship in the United States, she would like towork for the European Union representing Hungarian interests.

In her spare time Natalia likes reading, travelling and dancing.

Natalia Soczo

Máté is a final year student of Corvinus University of Budapest (formerBudapest University of Economic Sciences and Public Administration). He ismajoring in International Relations, and his minors are Diplomacy and a spe-cialized translation course in political and legal documents of the EuropeanUnion. He plans to write his thesis on the role of international organizations.He is also an undergraduate of Eötvös Loránd University, Faculty of Arts. He isstudying Hungarian and world literature.

He has been a boarder in the Szent Ignác Szakkollégium for two years, wheremembership duties and responsibilities include attending academic courses,writing applications for government funds, other sorts of fundraising, organiz-ing conferences, publication of academic works (issues of Studia Ignatiana),organizing college events.

His favourite spare time activity is reading Hungarian and English literature,both poetry and prose. He also likes to go to the theater to watch contempo-rary plays. Translating English literature into Hungarian is a challenge hestrives to respond to when his busy schedule allows him to do so. Anotherfocal point of his free time activities is participating in the civil life of Hungaryand, although one person has only limited resources, to encourage civil initia-tives.

He will spend a 11-month internship at Amnesty International US, in New York.He will participate in the work of the Business and Human Rights Department,focusing on the ongoing projects of the organization, for example encourage-ment of shareholder activism.

Roland is a former student of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, BudapestUniversity of Technology and Economics (BUTE). He graduated at BUTE in2004, however due to the scholarships he was awarded, he completed his aca-demic studies at three other universities in the USA, Austria and Spain. Hespeaks English, French and Spanish fluently and German on an intermediatelevel. He is currently working for a private Hungarian company as a site engi-neer at ongoing motorway constructions.

Roland intends to spend 12 months as a civil engineering trainee with the LouisBerger Group in New Jersey. The Berger family of firms is one of the leadingoperations in the world in environmental science, infrastructure engineeringand economic development. Roland would like to get a closer view of how met-ropolitan/interstate roads are designed and built in the USA. He also wants toget familiar with the technical vocabulary in order to utilize it at internationalconstructions in Hungary after his return.

He was raised in Kiskunfélegyháza which he left when he started to attend uni-versity in Budapest. He likes to read, listen to music, watch movies and learnlanguages. Roland loves to travel to foreign countries to explore them and getto know their cultures as well. In his spare time he likes to spend time withfriends.
